Obituary Preview: Penny Kay Scharff, 70, of Indianola, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022, at Westview Care Center. A memorial service for Penny will be held at 6:30pm on September 19, 2022, at the Martensdale Community Church. There will be a reception with light refreshments following the service.
Penny was born February 20, 1952, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa to Verlin and Bonita (Andrews) Hall. She was the oldest of four children and grew up on a farm in Lehigh, Iowa. Penny married Ed Scharff, and they raised two daughters on acreage in St. Marys, Iowa, with many cats and Saint Bernard’s. Penny was a dedicated student, graduating from Grandview College in 1990 with a 4.0 GPA in Human Services. She was very proud of her time working with children at YESS (Youth Emergency Services and Shelter) as well as coordinating events for Radisson Hotel and Drake University Law. She loved all kinds of music, reading, creating artwork, decorating cakes, and enjoyed any good Hallmark movie. Penny was a humorous and compassionate woman who was always there to listen without judging or lecturing. She was strong and independent, fighting hard until the end.
Penny is survived by her mother, Bonita Gazaway of Jenks, OK; daughters, Angela Scharff of Indianola, IA and Colleen (Matt) Krogman of St. Marys, IA; brother, Rick Hall of Boone, IA; sister, Julie (Tim) Thompson of Jenks, OK; grandchildren, Cody Willey, Macie Krogman, and Malena Krogman; and her great-grandchildren, Keyton Willey and a baby girl due in January.
Penny was preceded in death by her father Verlin, brother Garry, and a sister-in-law, Joy Hall. Penny’s daughters would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Westview Care Center and Suncrest Hospice for the amazing care their mother received.

Obituary Preview: Verlee Jeanne (Long) Bishop passed away peacefully on September 3, 2022 at her home in rural Indianola. A private memorial burial will take place at I.O.O.F Cemetery in Indianola at a later date, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Denny.
Verlee was born on April 7, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa to Verle and Maxine (Chase) Long. She graduated from Southeast Warren High School in 1962. In 1965 Verlee married Dennis Duane Bishop, and they stayed happily married until his passing in 1984. She retired from the State of Iowa in 2010. After retirement, Verlee loved to work in her gardens, watch and feed birds, and especially loved visiting with her friends and family.
Verlee is survived by her daughters, Angie (Doug) and Cyndi; grandson, Casey; and many loving family members and friends.
Memorials in Verlee’s name can be donated to S.E.W High School to be used for a scholarship for B and C students who wish to attend community college or a trade school.

Obituary Preview: Jimmie Edward Meadows passed away on August 10, 2022 in Indianola, Iowa. A visitation with family present will be held from 4:00pm-9:00pm on Friday, August 19, 2022 at Peterson Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial will take place at I.O.O.F Cemetery in Indianola.
Jim was born on September 19, 1936 in Kellerton, Iowa to Lowell and Paulyne (Poush) Meadows. After graduating from Kellerton High School, he attended Northwest Missouri State where he received his bachelor’s degree. Jim served proudly in the Iowa Air National Guard before he started a 31 year career as a pilot for United Airlines. After retirement, Jim started JE Meadows and Co where he did excavating work, and he also enjoyed farming; especially the trips to the grain elevator hauling crops in his truck. Jim was a member of Rotary Club of Indianola and a board member for TruBank in Indianola for 24 years. He was also on the board of Warren County Economic Development, Warren County Zoning Commission, and Warren County Condemnation and Compensation Committee. He and Miriam were yearly sponsors to the National Balloon Classic, which was very important to them both.
When Jim wasn’t devoting his time to work and his community, he loved to watch the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals. He especially loved his trips to Kansas City to watch the Royals. Jim also loved playing cards with friends and was a big fan of classic country music. Jim and Miriam loved traveling, taking trips to Branson and a very special trip to Nashville. He could often be found at one of the grandchildren’s’ ballgames or music concerts which he deeply enjoyed. Jim also loved and trusted the Lord deeply, and found peace and comfort in reading his Bible in the evenings. During the pandemic, Jim and Miriam would watch their favorite pastors on TV or online when going to church wasn’t possible. Jim was a kind man who gave so much to his family, community, and organizations he believed helped people live better lives.
Jim is survived by his wife, Miriam; sons, James (Pamela), Gregory, and Stephen (Roberta); step-children, Rick (Esther) Schmitz and Jennifer (Bill) Kim; grandchildren, Scott, Katie, Jessica, Bailey, Aaron, and Zachary; a great-grandchild, Elizabeth; and siblings, Joan, John, and Jean.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Judith Anne (Coffey) Meadows.

Betty was born in Illinois on January 7, 1939 to George and Lavita (Surest) Martin. She was a strong, generous, and caring woman who lived a life of putting the needs of others before her own. Betty was a mother and grandmother whose heart filled with joy when she was with her family. Her favorite hobby was immersing herself in a good book, and had read at least two thousand books throughout her lifetime, listing each author and title in multiple notebooks.
Betty is survived by her children; Don Estes, Doug (Cheri) Estes, and Randy (Laura) Estes; grandchildren, Shane Estes and Wesley (Sarah) Keeney; great-grandchildren, Kortni Ren, Kylea (Kevin) Ren, Dylan Estes, Haylee Estes, Adyline Keeney, Bexley Keeney, and William Keeney; great-great-grandchildren, Brayah Ren and Kanon Millard; sisters, Esther (Ronnie) Morrison and Joan Smith; and a niece, Gerilynn.

Bill was born on September 12, 1990 in Des Moines, Iowa to Matthew and Lisa (Minella) Anders. He graduated from Southeast Warren in 2008 and from Northwest Missouri State in 2012. Bill enjoyed fishing for all kinds of fresh and salt water fish, and was an avid fly fisherman. He enjoyed fishing the gold medal waters of Lake Taneycomo. Bill enjoyed making the flys he used to fish those waters. He enjoyed camping, hiking, boating and kayaking where ever he lived. Bill was a diehard Kansas City Chiefs fan since he could walk. He was also a big Kansas City Royals fan. Bill was an entrepreneur and was involved in starting several companies. Here is a quote from Bill “Take a risk, if it fails, then go back to work, but don’t put off your dreams, that’s where they go to die”
Bill is survived by his parents, Matt and Lisa Anders; his brother Jonathan Anders; uncles, Joe Anders and Ben (Carla) Anders; aunts, Joyce Minella and Susan (Roger) Manley, as well as several cousins.
Bill was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Vivian Anders and Edward and Vera Minella.

Dorothy was born in Missouri in 1927 to Russell and Wilhma (Smith) Crane. She married Henry Potts and they moved to Indianola, Iowa in 1952. She loved the birds and the flowers in her yard. She enjoyed bridge and golf. Dorothy was a successful real estate agent in Indianola for more than twenty years before retiring.
Dorothy is survived by her brother, Allen Crane; her two daughters, Deborah Potts and Karla Potts; and her two sons, Gary Potts and Randal Potts.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; her parents, and her brothers, Harold Crane and Thomas Crane.

Scott enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren. In addition, he enjoyed hunting and anything with a motor. Scott’s family fondly remembers stopping at every car and motorcycle museum along their vacation route. His family and friends will also miss his humor, creative problem solving and “Scottism's.”
Scott is survived by his wife, Karen; children, Michelle (Ole), Eric (Tessa), and Kara (Justin); grandchildren, Maya and Liam; sister, Mary Milligan Abrahamson; step-brothers, Mike Looker and Dennis Looker; step-sister, Sue Williamson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dale John Gavin - May 13, 1933 - May 31, 2022

Obituary Preview: Dale John Gavin, 89, passed away May 31, 2022 at the Des Moines VA hospice after suffering from complications of cancer. A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm on Monday, June 6, 2022 at St Marys Parish Hall. A funeral mass for Dale will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys, Iowa, immediately followed by interment with military honors at St. Marys Cemetery.
Dale John Gavin was born on May 13, 1933 to Francis and Helen Gavin and was the second oldest of 8 brothers. After high school, Dale joined the Army and served in the Korean War. In 1955, after returning from Korea, he married Patricia (Patty) Miller and they enjoyed a long and loving marriage of 67 years.
Dale worked for Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel for 10 years, one of his many projects was The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO. However, Dale dreamed of starting his own business and together with his wife, Patty, this dream was realized when they opened Gavin TV and Appliance, which operated for 57 years. Alongside his business, Dale also owned and operated school buses for over 40 years. Dale was well known for his ability to “fix just about anything” and had a known willingness to help people through his handyman skills and impressive tool collection.
Dale served as Volunteer Fire Chief for 28 years, and in partnership with many others was responsible for starting the St. Mary’s Volunteer Fire Department in the 1970s. In 1990, he was instrumental in the building of a new large fire station. This new facility was built solely through fundraising and labor donations and without reliance on tax-payer money. In recognition of this achievement, Dale was awarded the Hometown Hero award by the Governor. He was also awarded a medal on the 50th anniversary of the Korean War from the South Korean Ambassador in Des Moines and the Ambassador of Peace medal in a ceremony in South Korea.
Dale was very involved in his community including the American Legion and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In addition, he served as an Emergency First Responder and unofficial Tornado chaser. Dale and Patty enjoyed extensive travel and were “snowbirds” in Mission, Texas for 22 years.
Dale is survived by his wife, Patty (Miller) Gavin; their five children, Pam Gavin, Cathy (Scott) Wiegert, Tim (Mary) Gavin, Beth (John) Manley, and Alan (Emily) Gavin; grandchildren, Jason (Tracie) Wiegert, Jessica (Jarret) Sheets, Dillon Gavin, Nick Gavin, Erin Manley, Gavin (Brandi) Manley, Noah Gavin, Zach Gavin, Sean Gavin; great-grandchildren, AJ & Sean Wiegert, Sophie & Adeline Sheets, Beau & Gabriella Manley; his seven brothers, Don (Joanne) Gavin, Jim (Dorothy) Gavin, Bob (Janice) Gavin, Ben (Pam, deceased) Gavin, Joe (Joyce) Gavin, Frank (Helen) Gavin, and David (Jeannette) Gavin.

Reg was born July 19, 1950 in Greenfield, Iowa to Fred and Betty (Roberts) Molln. After high school graduation, Reg moved to Des Moines where he attended United Electronics Trade School. While in Des Moines, he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Sandy "SAM" Warburton; Reg and Sandy married on September 16, 1972 in Greenfield Iowa and were married for almost 50 years. They made their home in Des Moines Iowa until 1987, before relocating to Indianola Iowa. Reg and Sandy both worked at Northwestern Bell Phone Company for 30 years before retiring in 2003. Reg continued working after his retirement and worked at Mediacom for an additional 5 years before fully retiring in 2008.
Reg loved reading, cooking, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Reg was very much the rock of his family; his sense of humor kept us laughing, his advice knowledge, and kind words and helping hand, is what we will miss the most. Reg will be incredibly missed by all those that knew him.
Reg was preceded in death by his Father Fred Molln and mother Betty (Roberts) Molln and is survived by his wife, Sandy; sons, Matthew (Christina) Molln and Nicholas Molln; granddaughter, Nicole Nelson and his great-grandson, Able, brother, Rick (Kris) Molln; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family.

Les was born on October 6, 1983 in Jacksonville, Arkansas to Vencent and Rhonda (Barrow) Grant. Les enjoyed working with his hands, which led to his love of gardening with his mother. When he wasn’t outdoors, he could be found reading a good book. He read countless books from many different series. He loved playing games with his loved ones. Most of all, Les loved spending time with his kids, whom his life revolved around.
Les is survived by his parents, Vencent and Rhonda-Lee Grant; children, Endora, Keltin and Scarlett; siblings, Alysia, Katelyn and Shane Grant; grandparents, Fred and Carolyn Ocheltree; nephew, Ayden Grant-Sinclair; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Les was preceded in death by Michael and Dorothy Noga. “Les, you were one of the most selfless, loving, and intelligent people we know. You have battled the same demons that plague the world today. Rory was born on February, 10 1962 to Clifford and Betty (Everett) Kempf. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, where he was staff-sergeant up until his retirement following 27 years of service. In his free time Rory loved woodworking and being with his family and grandchildren.

Jeanne was born in Des Moines, Iowa to William “Bill” and Marie (McNeer) Brentano. She attended Martensdale St. Marys High School where she was a proud contributing member of the 6 on 6 Girls Basketball team. She played as a high scoring forward.
After high school, Jeanne competed in an Industrial Basketball League for Look Magazine while working for them. She also worked for Maytag, 10X, Firestone, and Anheuser-Busch. In her later years she worked for the U.S. Government in various departments for human resource. She worked for the IRS, HUD, USDA - Food Safety Inspection Service, and was a recruiter for Federal Food Inspectors.
After retirement, Jeanne decided to work for Hallmark as she had a love for Christmas and Hallmark Collectibles. She amassed an amazing collection of Hallmark ornaments and cards, decorating 3 different Christmas trees in her home at Christmas time. Jeanne was very creative and resourceful. She made quilts, liked to sew, and produced all the flower arrangements for her daughters’ wedding.
Jeanne is survived by her children, Chadrick Hoch, Tamara Hoch, Sonia (Patrick) Marsh; brother William “Bill” (Ellen) Brentano Jr., sister, Colleen Morrow, five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Mariya Mikhaylovna Abaras - August 23, 1959 - January 24, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mariya Mikhaylovna Abaras was accepted into the loving arms of the Lord on Monday, January 24, 2022 at the age of 62. Her final moments on Earth were spent in Tidewell Hospice in Venice, Florida surrounded by family members after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
Mariya was born to Varvara and Michael Rutkovskiy on August 23, 1959 in Zarasai, Lithuania. During her school years she excelled in all of her required studies, but especially in languages. At the age of 17 she devoted her life to her Savior, Jesus Christ, and service to others. She loved music, poetry, and nature. She wrote Christian poems that are included in the book Christian Poems by Christian Poets, a compilation of Russian poems by Pavel Romanchik. Every night Mariya would gather all of her children to sing songs and read stories.
On June 6, 1981 she was married to Aleksandr Abaras and they spent 40 years together. They were blessed with eight children and twenty grandchildren.
In 2001, the Abaras family immigrated from Latvia to the US, where they continue to reside. Mariya was a hard working employee of the Matsu Borough School District from 2002 until 2021.
Mariya was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. At Church, she was always eager to participate in choir and the worship of God. During her free time she busied herself composing encouraging cards, which were sent to many individuals. Her generosity and helpfulness, along with the way she donated her time and resources to the needs of others will always be remembered.
Mariya leaves behind her loving husband, Aleksandr; children, Paul and Vera Aberson, Peter and Anna Abaras, John and Malvina Aziza, Anatolijs Zozula, Ruvim Abaras, Ted and Veronika Ilnitsky, Yevgeniy Abaras and Brianna Andrade, Yelena Abaras and Paul Paris; and many grandchildren and friends. She will be greatly missed by her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Carl is survived by his daughters, Shelly (James) Jenkins and Cindy (Jan) Portwine; Grandchildren, Kayla (Fiancé Brandon) Portwine, Emily Portwine, Carl Portwine, and Scott Jenkins; and great- granddaughter, Addily Portwine. Obituary Preview: James Edward Brommel, 91, of St. Marys, Iowa passed away peacefully at his home on January 5, 2022. A visitation will take place at the St. Marys Parish Hall from 5:00-7:00 pm on Friday, January 7, 2022, with a rosary at 6:30 pm. A funeral mass will be held at 9:30 am on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at St. Marys Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment will take place immediately following mass at St. Marys Cemetery with a luncheon to follow.
Jim was born October 11, 1930, in Des Moines to Edward and Marie (McCarthy) Brommel. He and Margaret married on September 25th, 1954. Other than serving in the Army during the Korean War, Jim lived in or near St. Marys where he farmed and raised six children with the love of his life, Margaret, to whom he was married for 67 years. For the last 35 years, Jim and Margaret wintered in Mission, Texas enjoying warm weather, friends, and Jim’s favorite past time, singing at jam sessions. Jim was known for his beautiful voice that boomed without a microphone and his perfect pitch that needed no accompaniment. He sang at hundreds of funerals, weddings, and holidays to celebrate the most important events in our lives. He was known to be heard above the tractor singing his favorite Irish song or hymn for the joy of it while working in his field. Jim and Margaret welcomed friends of all ages and loved playing games, bridge, cards, fast track, and these games were serious business. Jim played an active role in the National Farmers Organization, was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus and served many years as a Jackson Township trustee.
Jim is survived by his wife Margaret; children, Carol (Robert) Bartles, Jim (Joy) Brommel, Mary (Alan) Large, David (Kathy) Brommel, and Jean (David Pitt) Brommel; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marie Brommel; siblings, Alice Fath and Edward Brommel; son, John Brommel; and granddaughter, Briana Brommel.
Memorials in Jim’s name can be made to the Pink Tractor Foundation, St. Marys Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, or Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission, Texas.

Mary was a registered nurse, attending Broadlawns Nursing School, graduating in 1971. Mary spent over 20 years of her nursing career at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines. She eventually transition to senior care at the end of her career. Mary loved to spend time with her family, especially camping with her grandkids. Mary loved to paint ceramics and quilt. She also enjoyed sewing and mending clothing; her work sometimes ended with flamboyant patterns and colors.
Mary is survived by her husband, Edward; children, Bruce Donaldson, Rebecca (David) Jones, Brandy Donaldson, and Brooke (Bill Stephens) Donaldson; 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Leonard was born November 24, 1924 in Rock Township of Cherokee County, Iowa to Frank and Wilhelmina (Redder) Reinert. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On October 2, 1952 he married the love of his life Patricia Steichen in Remsen, Iowa. They were married close to 69 years. They loved to travel and wintered in Arizona for several years. Leonard loved making wood crafts for Patti to paint, birdhouses, benches, and barn wood planters. He also loved to play cards. Leonard worked hard to care for his family and worked away from home a lot. In the past few years he devoted his time to caring for Patti. He also said “she took care of you kids all those years, now it’s my turn to take care of her. “ Leonard was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Leonard is survived by his five children, Tim Reinert, Doug (Pam) Reinert, Dan (Denise) Reinert, Linda (Dennis) Herberger, and BethAnn (Randy) Stuflick; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Barb) Reinert; and a sister, Josephine Jorgenson.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Patti, his parents, 10 brothers and sisters.
