Jerry Lee Kerlee - July 20, 1940 - April 17, 2022

Obituary Preview: Jerry Lee Kerlee, age 81, of Black Mountain, NC, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2022 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville, NC.
Jerry was born on July 20, 1940, in Buncombe Co., NC to the late Leander Columbus Kerlee and Laura Blanche Bradley Kerlee.
Jerry served his community as a policeman at the Black Mountain Police Department for 20+ years and was Captain until his retirement. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. Jerry loved music. He was the lead singer for the band, “Jerry Kerlee and the Royal Rhythms”. They made several records and were inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Most of all, Jerry loved his family dearly. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Julia Kelly.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Ora Lee Pilkey Kerlee; two sons, Rick Kerlee of Greenlee, NC and Stan Kerlee of Asheville; a daughter, Tammy Kerlee of Black Mountain; a brother, Kenneth Kerlee of Black Mountain; two granddaughters, Nicole Kerlee of Greenville, SC and Devon White of Marion, NC; a grandson, Brandon Kerlee of Old Fort, NC; seven great-grandchildren; his beloved pet dachshund, “Molly Dear”; and two very dear friends, Earl Lewis of Asheville and Sonny Slagle of Black Mountain.
Jerry’s family would like to thank Care Partners Hospice and Palliative Care in Asheville for the loving care they showed Jerry.
A Celebration of Jerry’s life will be announced by the family at a later date.

Obituary Preview: John Lewis Keener, age 89, of Swannanoa, NC, passed away peacefully, on Sunday, April 17, 2022, at his residence.
John was born on July 9, 1932, in Jackson Co., NC, to the late Arthur Keener and Lucy Whitehead Keener. He attended Swannanoa Heights Baptist Church and was retired from his job as a security guard at Owen Manufacturing in Swannanoa.
John loved his family and his country and he proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He enjoyed fishing and loved being on Lake Adger in his houseboat. John also enjoyed gardening, playing computer games and crossword puzzles. He was a hard worker who was mechanically inclined and you could often find him working on car motors, transmissions, etc.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth McMahan Keener; sons, Lewis (Linda) Keener, Rickie and Michael Keener, all of Franklin, NC, James (Holly) McMahan of Asheville, Jonathan (Dwayne) Aldridge-Keener of Mabelton, GA,  and Christian and Kadin Cole of Swannanoa; daughters, Koweta Goodwin of Leicester, NC, Keawaunee Rogers of Asheville, Kimberly (Tony) Robinson of Asheville, and Evelyn (James) Keever of Asheville; 16 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Jerry McMullan Newbold Jr. - September 25, 1922 - April 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: The Rev. Dr. Jerry M. Newbold, Jr., age 99 1/2, victoriously entered The Church Triumphant on April 13, 2022, while a resident at Givens Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, NC.
Dr. Newbold, born on September 25, 1922, in Wilmington, NC, was the son of Jeremiah M. and Jessie Harper Newbold.  He graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC; Davidson College in Davidson, NC; and Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA.  He received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Austin College in Sherman, TX.
Prior to beginning his life’s work of administering children’s homes and family service agencies, Dr. Newbold served as Pastor of the Southport Presbyterian Church in Southport, NC, and taught high school chemistry in Southport and Elizabethtown, NC.  Additionally, he taught chemistry at the Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China, until evacuated by the U.S. Government due to Communist invasion.  Upon returning to the U.S., he served in North Carolina as Pastor of the Warsaw and Bowden Presbyterian Churches, Moderator of Wilmington Presbytery, and Chaplain (Captain) in the North Carolina National Guard.  For 35 years, Dr. Newbold was the CEO of the following children’s home and family service agencies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.): Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home for Children, Arkansas (1952-56); Presbyterian Children’s Home and Service Agency, Texas (1956-73); and Presbyterian Home and Zuni Presbyterian Training Center, Virginia (1973-87).
During those rewarding years, Dr. Newbold served as President of the Presbyterian Association of Children’s Homes, the Texas Association of Children’s Homes, Virginia Association of Children’s Homes, Southwestern Association of Executives of Homes for Children, and Southeastern Child Care Association.  He also was a founder and Board Secretary for the National Association of Homes and Services for Children.  Dr. Newbold represented Texas at the 1970 White House Conference on Children and Youth.  For 33 consecutive summers Dr. Newbold participated in the nationally acclaimed workshops sponsored by the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he promoted similar workshops at universities in Texas and Virginia.  He served on the Boards of The Presbyterian Outlook, Westminster-Canterbury of Lynchburg, Free Clinic of Central Virginia, and the First Presbyterian Church Weekday School in Lynchburg, VA.  After moving to Black Mountain, Dr. Newbold served on the Board of the Black Mountain Presbyterian Church Weekday School and as Board Treasurer for the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Western North Carolina.  Dr. Newbold was a Rotarian.
Dr. Newbold’s first beloved wife of 54 years, Helen Shaw Newbold, predeceased him in 2002; and they are survived by their three daughters: Helen Martin Newbold and her husband, Mark Colbenson of Cullowhee; NC, her former husband, Eric Lacker of St. Petersburg, FL; and their children William Newbold Lacker (wife Laurel Casillo) and Katherine Martin Lacker of New York City; Frances Newbold Mohr and her husband Karl of Stone Mountain, GA; and Rebecca Newbold Dion and her husband Kyle of Mars Hill, NC; and his son Walker (wife Jessie Johnson-Tyas) of Arden, NC; and grandchildren Blayze, Calvin, and Alexis.
In 2008 Dr. Newbold happily married Patricia Orton Moran Talley Newbold, the widow of the Rev. Dr. Charles Talley, and is survived by her and her children: Charles and his family of Arden, NC; and Katherine and her family of Navato, CA.
Dr. Newbold was preceded in death by his five siblings: Caroline Newbold Swails and Anne Newbold Perkins of Wilmington, NC; his twin sister, Jessie Newbold Kennedy of Lexington, VA; and his younger twin brothers, Charles Harper Newbold of Davidson, NC, and Kenneth Raynor Newbold of Rose Hill, NC.
A private graveside service will be held at the Harper-Newbold Family Plot in Wilmington’s historic Oakdale Cemetery.

Bruce Edward Fore - March 01, 1938 - March 31, 2022

Obituary Preview: Bruce Edward Fore age 84, went to his eternal home with Jesus on Thursday, March 31, 2022.
He was born on March 1, 1938, in Buncombe County, NC to late Clarence (Sid) and Thelma Revis Fore.
After serving in the Air Force he returned home and worked at Southern Railway and attended Mars Hill College. He then served as a Juvenile Lieutenant for 20 years with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Department. He served The Lord for over 40 years by singing with his brother Jerry, leading in his church, disaster relief work with the North Carolina Baptist Men, traveling with the Lay Witnessing Foundation, as well as a lifetime legacy of leading hundreds of people to know Jesus Christ as their personal savior.
He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Joan Bradley Fore; his four daughters Alice(Ron), Beth (Jeff), Brenda, and Darlene (Reggie). He also leaves behind five grandchildren and their families Brandon Shope, Carson Gasperson, Holly Shope, Amber Banks. and Jordan Merrill.
He also leaves behind his sister Shirley Arrowood (Bobbie), and sister-in-law Daris Fore, their families, and manyother beloved family and friends.
A Graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2022, 3 PM at Brea Baptist Church.

Sean was born July 10, 1986, to Michael D. Penley and Virginia Lee Congdon.
Sean is preceded in death by his mother Virginia Penley.
Sean graduated from North Buncombe High School and later became an electrician with SB Electrical Controls, where he operated in environmental controls.
Sean was a devout father, an immovable fan of the Buffalo Bills football team, and enjoyed live music.
Sean is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Joon Penley, of Asheville ,NC; her mother, Kaite Sadowski, of Asheville; his father, Michael Penley; his sister, Taylor Penley Black (Josh) of Alexander; his grandmothers, Mary Penley, of Asheville; and Beverly Congdon of Alexander.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday April 6, 2022, at 2:00 PM  located at Sky View Cemetery at 1610 Tunnel Road, Asheville, North Carolina 28805 with Rev. Marc Penley officiating.

Patricia Jean Keyse - March 04, 1933 - March 30, 2022

Obituary Preview: Patricia Jean (Garman) Keyse, 89, of Hendersonville passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at The Landings of Mills River.
Born March 4, 1933 in Ashland County, OH, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Lorena Howard Garman.  She grew up in Columbia Station, OH, and was a graduate of Columbia High School and Baldwin – Wallace College.
Patricia and her husband owned and operated multiple businesses in Ohio, such as greenhouses, blueberry farms and The Old Mill farm market. Her true passions were gardening, painting, and watching sports, especially college basketball.   She and her husband retired in North Carolina in 1984, as she loved the mountains and peacefulness.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her spouse, Glenn Willard Keyse, and son-in-law, Jim Arndt.
Surviving are her children: Michael Keyse and his spouse, Alina, of Winter Park, FL, Curtis Keyse and his spouse, Becky, of Hendersonville, NC, David Keyse of Grassy Creek, NC, and Linda Arndt of Hendersonville, NC.  No formal services are scheduled at this time.

Obituary Preview: Linda Gail Mathis Cox, age 65 of Nebo, NC, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022 at UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton, NC.
Linda was born in Buncombe Co., NC, on September 18, 1956, to the late Willie Arthur Mathis and Jessie Lee Bass Mathis.
She was a sweet lady with a good heart who would help anyone who needed it. Linda was a homemaker and she enjoyed shopping, dancing, watching her favorite television shows, and listening to music. Most of all, she loved her family dearly.
In addition to her parents, Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Cox; four brothers, Benny, Bobby, Bill, and Jimmy Mathis; and a sister, Rose Ledford.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Tommy (Celena) Cox of Old Fort, NC; four granddaughters, April, Victoria, Rebecca, and Jessica; grandson, Joey; two great-grandchildren; a special niece and caregiver, Mary (Paul) Grant of Nebo; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

Edith Orr Smith - March 02, 1937 - March 23, 2022

Obituary Preview: Edith Gross Smith, passed away on March 23, 2022 in Asheville, NC.
Edith was born on March 2, 1937 in Boston, MA to the late  Robert E. and Mary Lou Gross.
She earned degrees from Boston University and Mills College, where she studied with French composer Darius Milhaud.
She earned her doctorate in music from Stanford University.
Edith joined the music faculty of Orange Coast College in 1971, making an enduring impact on the lives and successful careers of a number of her students. Several of her students remained in contact with her throughout her life.
After retiring from OCC in 1998, she moved to Asheville and turned to other interests, including quilting and renovating her home and landscape.
Her passion for her several generations of Keeshonds and cats continued unabated, and her tuxedo cat, Hootie, was with her to the end.
Edith will be greatly missed by her friends.

Obituary Preview: Fern Ely Goodwin, age 70, of Old Fort, NC, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2022, at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, in Forest City, NC.
Fern was born on August 22, 1951, in Delaware Co., Pennsylvania to the late Russell Davies Ely and Florence Mariana Copp Ely. She worked as a home health aide in the Buncombe County area of NC and attended The Rock Church in Candler, NC.
Fern loved animals and enjoyed picking the fall leaves and collecting unique rocks. She was a talented artist who could write and draw beautifully. Fern was stubbornly optimistic even in the face of adversity. She always knew things would get better and was hopeful. Fern demonstrated great courage and strength. Most of all, she loved her family dearly and will be missed deeply.
In addition to her parents, Fern was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Ely.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her husband, Will Goodwin, of Weaverville, NC;  two daughters, Althea (Brian Stanford) Wilkins of Asheville and Chloe Nossiter of Leesburg, GA; a son, Russell Goodwin of Old Fort, NC; two grandsons, Corin Nossiter of Arden, NC and Galen Prevost of Leesburg, GA; a granddaughter, Kira Prevost of Leesburg, GA; two sisters, Donna (Joe) Harkins of Louisiana, and Dawn Huser of Shelby, NC; and her sweet long-haired Persian rescue cat, Missy.
Fern’s family  and friends celebrated Fern’s life while she was still living and could be in attendance, on December 4, 2021. She loved being with her family and friends and the memories made that day will be forever cherished.

Fred John Marvulli - January 07, 1977 - February 24, 2022

Obituary Preview: Fred John Marvulli, age 67, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC.
Fred was born on January 7, 1955, in Brooklyn, NY to the late Daniel Marvulli and Margaret Wade Marvulli. He served his country proudly in the United States Army. He was retired and had previously worked as a custodian at Charles George VA Medical Center.
Fred was a good-hearted man who never met a stranger. He was a very caring person who would give you the shirt off  his back if you needed it. He was a people person and loved to joke around. He had a great sense of humor and he loved to fix watches. He also was a talented electrical repair technician. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by two brothers,  David and John Marvulli.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his twin sister, Nora (Ray) McKinney of Asheville; a nephew, Caleb (Amber) McKinney of Greenville, SC; four nieces, Kayla McKinney of Asheville, Lorena Daggett of Asheville, Crystal (Bryan) Queen of Asheville, and Dana Shade of Atlanta, GA; and fourteen great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Blevins will be laid to rest at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US Hwy 70, Black Mountain, NC on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at 10:00 AM with military honors performed by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard.

Sarah was born on January 20, 1936, in McDowell County, NC to the late Charles Russell Tate and Raye Cooper Tate.
She worked as a teacher’s aide at Black Mountain Primary School until her retirement. Sarah loved working with the first graders and kindergarteners so much. She also enjoyed gardening and keeping her yard pretty with flowers and plants. Most of all, she loved her family dearly and she will be greatly missed.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Maria Tannett of Swannanoa, NC and Laura Moyer of Concord, NC; one grandson, Billy Ray Ricketts, III of Black Mountain; and a brother, Frank (Brenda) Tate of Old Fort, NC.
A Graveside service will be held on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Mountain View Memorial Park in Black Mountain conducted by Pastor Tim Worthington.

Lillian was born on September 18, 1933, in Yancey Co., NC to the late Edward Lance and Bonnie Hollifield Lance. Before she retired she worked as a dietary aide and also at Wintex. Lillian was a member of Appalachian Angels which is a non-profit community service group. She was a very loving and caring person who never met a stranger. She loved helping people and she loved her family dearly. She was the matriarch of her family and they called her the “Buckner Boss”! Lillian will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Lillian was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack Arnold Buckner; son-in-law, Randy Light; three grandchildren, Joseph Dwayne Rogers, Billy Jack Light, and Lydia Jeneen Buckner; and a great-grandson, Billy Cassada.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her two sons, Danny (Carol) Buckner of Canton, NC, and James Rogers of Hendersonville, NC; two daughters, Katherine (Tim) Tolar and Jackie Light, both of Swannanoa; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great- grandchildren; and a special niece, Teresa McMinn of Woodfin, NC.
The family would like to say a special “thank you” to Dr. Michael Dowling for the loving care he showed our mother.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Homers Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, 202 Chapel Rd., Black Mountain, NC 28711 with Pastor Caleb Davis conducting the service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the church.
Burial will be announced at a later date.

Reynolds High School and was employed as a landscaper for the last several years.
Richard volunteered as a fireman for Reynolds Fire Department and later for the Fairview Fire Department.
Of his many hobbies, bow hunting and gardening were among his favorites, but nothing superseded the enjoyment he had when spending time with his daughter, Laycee Brown.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his sister, Christine Brown Gosnell of Fairview; friend and mother to his daughter, Audrey Alexander of Asheville; nephew, Caleb Brown; and niece, Hannah Gosnell.
No formal services will be held at this time.

Obituary Preview: Rev. Abel McIver “Mac” Hart, 93, of Black Mountain, NC passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Givens Highland Farms. Born August 19, 1928 in Staunton, VA, he was a son of the late Freeman H. and Jean Fraser Hart.
As a teenager, Mac was an Eagle Scout and later served as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. Mac was an alumnus of both Davidson College where he received a B.A. in English in 1949, and Columbia Theological Seminary where he received a M.A. of Divinity in 1953. Rev. Hart was an ordained presbyterian minister and he served as general presbyter for Hanover Presbytery in Richmond, VA from 1968 to 1974, and as executive presbyter for Grace Presbytery in Dallas, TX from 1974-1993. In addition, he was pastor at churches in Fayette, MS, Wynne, AR, and Meridian, MS, and served as Associate Pastor at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, AR. Even after retirement, he held interim pastorates in Rocky Mount, NC and York, SC. He was a member of Black Mountain Presbyterian Church.
As part of a lifelong commitment to social justice and his Christian values, Mac volunteered to help the needy and to register voters in Henderson and Buncombe counties. He also enjoyed relaxing with a good book, a historical map, or genealogical research.
In addition to his parents, Mac was preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Muriel Gear Hart; brother, James Wilson Hart; brother-in-law, Richard Gear; brother-in-law, Robert Dickey; and sister-in-law, Meredith Hart.
Surviving are his children, David M. Hart of Amherst, MA, Felix A. Hart and his spouse, Elizabeth, of Kent, WA, J. Gary Hart of Austin, TX, Elizabeth Hart of Mansfield Center, CT, Douglas B. Goldenberg-Hart and his spouse, Diane, of Silver Spring, MD; siblings, Fraser Hart, of Madison, WI, David E. Hart and his spouse, Rachel, of Charlotte, NC, and Jean B. Dickey, of Takoma Park, MD, and sister-in-law, Jean C. Hart of Gainesville, FL; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church at a later date. Mac and Muriel's cremains will be deposited together at Montreat Memorial Gardens.

Bacon, Jr.; children: James Hart and his spouse, Dee, of Fairview, Nicky Hart and his spouse, Tammy, of Marion, Derek Hart and his spouse, Michele, of Black Mountain, and Brandon Hart and his spouse, Josie, of Fairview; brother, Jerry Angel and his spouse, Debbie, of Arden; best friend/sister, Carolyn Andrick of Asheville; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces, a nephew, and several cousins.  A funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 20, 2022, in the chapel of Penland Family Funeral Home in Swannanoa with the Rev. Wanda was born on August 11, 1951, in Buncombe County to the late Troy Lewis and Valerie Hampton Lewis.
She was a Christian lady and a member of Parkway Baptist Church. She worked as a supervisor at Charles D. Owen Manufacturing and was the business manager at Curtis Parts Company.
Wanda loved to go shopping at flea markets and yard sales. She had a beautiful smile and a good sense of humor, too. She loved her family, and her son was the joy of her life. She adored her grandchildren and will be missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her two dogs, Harley and Daisey.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Pat Lewis.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her beloved son, Noah (Angel) Lewis of Asheville; two granddaughters, Valorie and Madelyn Lewis of Asheville; her brother, Tony (Nancy) Lewis of Hendersonville; and three sisters, Brenda Lewis of Asheville, Deborah Edwards of Marshall, and Vikkie (Marty) Metcalf of Asheville; a host of nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Zelda Curtis, Wanda West, and Pat Rouse, that will dearly miss her.
