Gerald A Darsch - October 29, 1953 - May 23, 2023

Departed: 05/23/2023 (Braintree)
Obituary Preview: Gerald Darsch (Jerry), loving husband, wonderful father, and amazing grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.  He was able to spend his last weekend surrounded by people who loved and cared for him deeply. Jerry was an incredible man who accomplished more than most in his lifetime. He was the director of DoD Combat Feeding at U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center. He spearheaded the creation of MRE’s, flame-less ration heating devices, sustainable astronaut food and many other innovative technologies. He worked with the Pentagon and Col. Powell during the Gulf war to completely revamp feeding soldiers. He worked with Hershey to create chocolate that wouldn’t melt during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He worked with Walmart to create the first RFID technology to track shipments being airdropped to soldiers in war torn countries. He paved the way for ration standardization in NATO. He met so many generals, presidents, foreign leaders. We could go on and on with his professional accomplishments. But to his family, Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. Jerry and Beverley were together for almost 50 years. He was Beverley’s everything; he made her laugh, protected her, and was her best friend. He always tried to make his family’s dreams come true. To his kids, he was their dad. He spent countless hours playing softball and baseball, teaching them how to properly handle and shoot weapons. He loved to take his kids fishing, clamming and camping. He was the best on the grill (no one made a better chicken wing) and he loved listening to music. He also loved nothing more than sharing an extra buttery bowl of popcorn with his family while watching cheesy Grade-B action movies. These last few years, he enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports, listen to them play their instruments, show them how to cook lobsters, teach them weapon safety and take them fishing. Jerry was also a medical anomaly. He is in the medical journal twice for overcoming major medical issues that even doctors couldn’t believe a person could survive. Nothing could stop him. And even in his final days, he never had a single grey hair on his head because he was that lucky. Suffice to say, Jerry was an amazing man who will be missed dearly. We find solace in knowing he is in heaven with his son watching over us. There will be a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, 72 Washington St. in Weymouth at 10:30 A.M. on June 20, 2023 followed by a Burial at Braintree Cemetery, Plain St. in Braintree. Following the Burial, everyone is welcome to join the family for a light lunch at The Darsch residence, 491 Liberty St.,  Braintree, MA  02184

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the deceased person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to share memories and condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, awards, or military service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or private memorials.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries as part of their end-of-life planning. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told accurately.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing of your loved one, you can opt for a private obituary or create a memorial on a private online platform.

Can I edit or correct an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published to request corrections or edits. They may have specific procedures for making changes after publication.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms usually publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?

You may need permission from the original publisher or copyright holder to republish an obituary. Be sure to check their policies before sharing or reprinting.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary, often hosted on websites like Legacy.com or FuneralHomes.com. These platforms allow users to create, share, and interact with online memorials.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituary platforms archive tributes permanently, allowing friends and family to access them at any time. However, some websites may have limitations or restrictions on how long they store content.

Can I add comments or condolences to an online obituary?

Yes, many online platforms enable visitors to leave messages, share memories, or express condolences on the virtual guestbook associated with the obituary.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives like Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank.com, which aggregate historical newspaper content. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have resources to help you locate older obituaries.

What is the purpose of an obituary in genealogical research?

Obituaries can provide valuable information for genealogists, such as names of relatives, dates of birth and death, places of residence, and other biographical details that can aid in tracing family histories.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy?

A well-written obituary can serve as a starting point for crafting a eulogy. However, you may want to expand upon it and add more personal anecdotes to create a unique tribute for the funeral or memorial service.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive topics or circumstances surrounding the deceased person's life or death, it's essential to approach them with tact and respect when writing the obituary. Consider consulting with family members or advisors if needed.

What is the role of social media in sharing an obituary?

Social media platforms can be used to share links to online obituaries or post brief announcements about someone's passing. This helps spread the news quickly and allows friends and acquaintances to offer condolences digitally.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to specify a charity or cause in memory of their loved one. This information can be included in the obituary along with details on how to make donations.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

What if I'm struggling emotionally while writing an obituary?

Taking on this task during a difficult time can be overwhelming. Consider enlisting support from friends, family members, or professional writers who can help you craft a fitting tribute while coping with your emotions.
