Obituary Preview: Lake Linden: Violet M. (Alanen) Moehrke, age 85 of Lake Linden, passed away peacefully at GreenTree of Hubbell, on Sunday April 3, 2022, under the loving care of Portage Health Hospice.
She was born in Redridge on January 2, 1937, a daughter of Eleanor (Junttonen) and Reino Alanen. She attended the Redridge School and Houghton High School.  In her early years, she worked at Crown Bakery.  She worked many years at the Vacationland Motel and subsequently at the Best Western.  She thoroughly enjoyed all the guests she met over the years.
She married James Moehrke on May 20, 1961 at St. Matthew's Church in Hancock.  For over 20 years, she and her husband wintered in Camp Verde, Arizona. She was a 10 plus year Breast Cancer survivor and participated in several Relays for Life.  She enjoyed shopping trips with the girls, being out in the pontoon and sitting out on her deck in the summer with a cold one.
Her greatest pride and joy was being able to see her only grandson graduate, marry, and bless her with 2 great-grandsons who she adored and called "her boys."  She was affectionately known as NaNa.
She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. She was preceded in death by her husband-James, her parents, twin sons-Steven and Scott, sister-Evelyn Leikala, brother-Harold Alanen, and her canine companion-"Sassy."
She is survived by her daughter-Lori (Donald) Carlson of Michigamme, a grandson-Kyle (Abbey) Carlson and her great-grandsons-James and Kaden, special cousin-Arlene, good friend-Bonnie, 2 grand-doggies-Karlie and Kellie, along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Honoring Violet's wishes, a celebration of life will be held later this Spring.  Interment will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Audrey L. (Moyle) Romnek - Unknown - March 31, 2022

Obituary Preview: Hancock: Audrey L. (Moyle) Romnek, 75, of Hancock, passed away at Mission Point on March 31, 2022, with her sister by her side.
She was born July 9, 1946, in Laurium, a daughter of Raymond and Elizabeth (Rowe) Moyle.  She was a graduate of Lake Linden-Hubbell High School.  She moved to Milwaukee after graduation, where she worked for Port Terminal Storage.
She was married to Robert Romnek on May 12, 1973, at the Lake Linden Methodist Church.  Audrey moved back to the Copper Country after Robert passed in 1993.
Audrey was a member of the Lake Linden Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.  She enjoyed working on craft projects. She was preceded in death by: her husband, parents, and 2 brothers-Edward “Butch” and James "Skeezix."
She is survived by her sister-Nancy (John) Zurcher of Hancock along with many cousins.
The graveside service will be held in the Spring at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Lake Linden.  The Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Robert "Bobby" Mukavetz - Unknown - March 30, 2022

Obituary Preview: Lake Linden: Carl Robert "Bobby" Mukavetz, died on March 30, 2022. He passed quietly at the age of 79 in the company of his brother, Mike and the caring staff at his group home in Hancock. Bobby was mentally handicapped and he knew he was "different." He lived in a world that he could not adapt to and could not adapt to him for a large portion of his life. His later years were spent in comfort in 2 different homes. His greatest success in life was making his two brothers better, more compassionate people.  His being lesser made us want to be more. Kathryn Marie D'Agostino - Unknown - March 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: Kathryn Marie D'Agostino, 95, of Houghton, Michigan passed away suddenly at Advent Celebration Hospital in Kissimmee Florida on March 16, 2022.
Kathryn was born on June 7, 1926, a daughter of Albert and Marie Pelland of Lake Linden Michigan.
Kathryn was united in marriage to John L. D'Agostino of Chicago, IL on June 17 1950.  Kathryn and John raised 3 children: John A D'Agostino and Stephen D'Aostino, both of E Grosse Pointe Shores Michigan, and Susan(Perry) Luperini of Tampa Florida.  They enjoyed many years with their grandchildren, Adam Luperini of Naperville IL and Dean (Hannah) Luperini of Fishers, Indiana, visiting them at their lake property, enjoying boating, fishing, snowmobiling and camping.  Kathryn is the very proud great grandmother of Henry and Rory Luperini of Fishers, Indiana.   Kathryn has many nieces and nephews.
Kathryn received her nursing degree from St. Joseph's school of nursing and she was in the Army Nurse Cadet Corps during World War II.
Kathryn was an active member of St Joseph's Church in Lake Linden Michigan.
She enjoyed baking, cooking, boating, watching the hummingbirds in their feeders every spring, and solving word jumble books and crossword puzzles as a past- time.
Her favorite travel plans were to travel, each winter for the last 47 years, to Florida, to escape the Michigan winters and enjoy time with friends they have met from all over the United States.
Kathryn will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 24, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Father Joseph Boakye Yiadom to officiate.

Obituary Preview: Schoolcraft Township:  Reuben E. Normand, 87, of Schoolcraft Township,  passed away on February 26, 2022 at the GreenTree of Hubbell, where he had been a patient for the last 4 months.
He was born December 10, 1934, a son of Douglas and Helen (Hebert) Normand.  He attended Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools.
He worked at Valley View, which was his family's dairy farm.  He worked for Jilbert's Dairy, and for over 30 years at the Houghton County Road Commision.  After retirement, he worked for Leonard Hill Logging and throughout the years, he continued hobby farming.  He loved being outdoors, on the tractor.
He was married to Shelby Berryman on April 12, 1958 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Calumet.  She passed away on February 6, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother-Paul, 2 brothers-in-law-George Kiiskila, Sr. and Joseph Mahr, sister-in-law-Mary Normand, and little sister-Joan Normand.   Reuben is survived by: 3 daughters-Debbie Adams of Calumet, Sherri (Robert) Bessonen of Lake Linden, and Lori (Paul) Monette of Schoolcraft Twp; grandchildren-Josh Palmer, Stevie Adams, Jr, Kerri (Jim) Sullivan, Kelli (Steve) Bashynski, Kurt (Erin) Bessonen, and Natalie Monette; great-grandchildren-Beau, Lyndin, and Birdee Bashynski, Gwen and Eli Sullivan, Lillian and Owen Bessonen; brothers and sisters-Tom (Carol), Clarence "Jim" (Dottie), Bernard (Connie), Jane Kiiskila, Ann Mahr, and Mary (Gary) Bourdeau; sister-in-law-Darlene (Dave) Jarvi; companion-Doris Brisebois; along with several nieces and nephews.

Francis "Frank" Robert Cuff - Unknown - February 25, 2022

Obituary Preview: Lake Linden: Francis "Frank" Robert Cuff, well known area business owner and funeral director, passed away at Canal View-Houghton County, surrounded by friends and loved ones on February 25, 2022.
He was born on March 14, 1936 in Chicago a son of Francis Cuff and Margaret Anne (Shea) Cuff.  He graduated Hancock High School in 1954.
He proudly served for two years in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1956.  He served aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard Aircraft Carrier and ports of call included Japan, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Hong Kong.
Upon his return, he married the love of his life, Martha Louise Lombardi on July 11, 1959 at Sacred Heart Church in Calumet.
After working for his father for a few years, Frank started his own Livery Service in the mid 1960’s.  In 1975 he moved his family to Lake Linden.  In 1976 he attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, travelling home every weekend to be with his family.  In 1977 he graduated to started his career as the Funeral Director and owner of Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden.
Frank’s tenure as a Funeral Director allowed him to positively impact many people’s lives and he became a valued member of the community.  Frank retired in 2001.
To everyone’s surprise, he and Martha purchased a motor home in 1998 and began their 22 year journey through retirement together.  They circled the Great Lakes, made two long trips to Alaska, enjoyed winters in Georgia, and most importantly travelled regularly to visit children and grandchildren.  Frank often said that the second best decision he ever made was to purchase a motor home.  He would proudly follow this by stating his best decision was marrying the love of his life, Martha.
Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling, motor-homing, and rock collecting.
Frank served as a volunteer fireman on the Hancock Fire Department.  He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elk’s club.  Frank was a member of American Legion Post 90 in Lake Linden and a member of St. Joseph’s church.
Frank is survived by Martha (Lombardi) Cuff, his children Mary Kay Kass (Richard), Laura McLain, Carolyn Gagnon (Dan), and Dr. Robert Cuff (Karla).  His grandchildren Ryan Kass, Melissa Robers (Matt), Dillon Kass, Megan Gritter (Jon), Scott McLain (Erika), Mark McLain, Jessica Mosher (Marty), Sarah Burke (Dan), Noah Gagnon, Benjamin Cuff, and Henry Cuff , 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.  His sister Margie Ann Courtney, brother Bill Cuff, sister Marylyn Sandrik (Randy) and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

James "Jim" Pini - Unknown - February 08, 2022

Obituary Preview: Hubbell:  James A. "Jim" Pini, 72, of Hubbell,  passed away Tuesday afternoon at UP Health System-Marquette on February 8, 2022, following a short illness.
Jim was born July 23, 1949 to the late Alfred "Dick" and Irene (Clouthier) Pini.  He attended Lake Linden-Hubbell Public School, graduating with the class of 1967, and then he attended mechanic school in Marquette, followed by Suomi College in Hancock.
Jim was a past member of the Hubbell Fire Department as well as Commander of American Legion Post 90 in Lake Linden.  He also served with the 107th Engineers-National Guard, Calumet.  Over the years, Jim worked for a number of local businesses including Northern Hardwoods, Frank Siller Construction, 41 Lumber, Auto Value, and most recently as the Regional Sales Manager for SPC Midwest.
Jim is survived by: his wife-Susie Fennell-Pini of Hubbell; his one surviving aunt-Claire Chaput; siblings-Patricia (and the late Don) Hallowell of Dowagiac, MI, Jo Ann (Jim Kuusisto) Pini of Hubbell; his children-Brad (Jessica) Pini, Elise (Dennis) Provost, and their mother-Marilyn (Haller) Pini; also sons-Nathan (Gretta Hansing) Kellstadt of Albany, NY and Thad Kellstadt of Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren-Kurtis Provost, Julia Deiro, Kyle Provost, Wyatt Provost, and Dayne Pini; niece-Cherie (Ron) Janik and their 3 kids, nephew-Don (Teri) Hallowell and their 3 kids; numerous other relatives and dear friends, along with Jim's favorite walking partner, Tyson.
Jim was preceded in death by a sister-in-law-Beth Courtney and brother-in-law-Don Hallowell.
The family would like to extend a sincere "Thank You" for the tremendous amount of care given to Jim throughout his illness to the following: Dr. Thomas McConnon, Melissa Salani, PA-C, and UP Health systems Portage and Marquette and a special thanks to all the wonderful people at the beacon house in Marquette.
There will be a memorial gathering from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 17 at the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden, where the Copper Country Veterans will conduct Military Rites at 7:30.  Also, a celebration of his life will be held this summer to honor Jim. Bill (Dr Wilbur H) Campbell - Unknown - January 30, 2022

Obituary Preview: Lake Linden: Bill (Dr Wilbur H) Campbell died unexpectedly at home early on 30 Jan 2022.  He was born in 1945 in Santa Ana, CA and earned his PhD in Biochemistry from UW Madison in (1972).  A series of post-doctoral positions in different parts of the country led to a faculty appointment in the Dept of Chemistry at the State Univ of New York College of Environmental Science & Technology.  He met and married Ellen in Syracuse in 1981, and they moved to the Keweenaw in 1985 when he became the biochemistry professor at MI Tech.  In 1993, the Campbells decided to try to bring the discoveries of Bill's academic research out into the world with new products for testing water quality.  NECi, in Lake Linden, was one of the first biotech companies in Michigan.  NECi's products for nitrate testing won USEPA method approval in 2017.  They are made in Lake Linden and sold to customers worldwide.
Bill's step-daughter Lisa Carne works on coral restoration in Belize.  His brother's family are settled downstate, from Detroit to Ann Arbor.  Sister Jeanette Merki and family are in Kirkland, WA.
Bill loved trees, birds, wildlife, cats, bears, and peace.  The beauty of the area kept the Campbells here in the UP, despite the winters.  Neither of us care much for ceremonies, and none are planned.  We want to thank the area medical community for doing their best to keep Bill as comfortable and functional as possible during the past years.  Please send memorials, if desired, to area organizations engaged in preservation of natural beauty.

Donald J. Lewis - Unknown - January 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: Lake Linden: Donald J. Lewis, 89, a former Copper Country resident, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022.
He was born on February 26, 1932, in Hubbell, Michigan to W. Allen and Bertha Lewis. He attended the local schools and graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School with the class of 1950. Following high school, Don served in the Korean War as a Navy radar man stationed at Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines. In 1959 he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Accounting at the University of Detroit and worked as a corporate controller for much of his career in accounting.
On August 16, 1958, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church he was joined to Barbara C. Lewis in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Don and Barb enjoyed 63 wonderfully blessed years of marriage together and were examples of generosity and prayerfulness to their family and those around them.
His Catholic faith meant everything to Don. He shared it with Barb as a gift to one another, and to all who knew and loved him. He especially had a passion for the Latin Mass serving as an altar server in his youth and Master of Ceremonies in his later years. When Don wasn’t working or serving his family, you would find him serving the Church as a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus or wherever needed.
Don loved to travel, see places of religious and historical significance and meet people on those journeys. He shared many stories of traveling throughout the US, especially the times he and Barb  adventured in their RVs.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, W. Allen and Bertha Lewis. He is survived by his three children: Allen (Kristin) Lewis of Westerville, Ohio, Lisa (Dianna) Lewis of Sausalito, California, Stephanie Cahill of Columbus, Ohio, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A live-streamed funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis de Sales in Newark, Ohio on January 21, 2022 at 10 am with Fr. David Sizemore, assisted by Deacon Eric Wright. The wake will take place on Thursday, January 20, 2022 from 5 – 7 pm at Schoedinger Funeral Home located at 1051 E Johnstown Rd, Gahanna, OH 43230.  Services in Lake Linden are planned for May. Obituary Preview: Barbara Ann Lewis, 79, a former Copper Country resident, passed away suddenly on New Year’s Morning 2022 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Barbara was born on March 2nd, 1942, in Lake Linden, Michigan to W. Allen Lewis & Bertha M (Auger) Lewis. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School in Lake Linden through the 8th Grade.  She Graduated from Lake Linden Hubbell High School in June 1960.
Barbara was a Varsity Sports Cheerleader and chosen to lead the cheerleading squad as Captain for 2 years.
She completed a secretarial program at a Vocational School in Marquette, Michigan in 1972.
She moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she worked as a secretary for Sperry Univac in Eagan, MN. and worked part-time in retail clothing stores.
Barbara’s favorite pastime over the past years has been watching live sport games on T.V.  She was an avid GREEN BAY PACKERS FAN.  She faithfully cheered for the MILWAUKEE BUCKS and the GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS basketball teams.  She enjoyed all baseball games broadcasted on T.V. Cheering always for the CHICAGO CUBS.
Barbara especially loved to attend her Great granddaughter’s Monroe and Madyn’s dance recitals and during the summer months, cheering for great grandson, Major’s baseball games.
She was a devout Catholic and faithfully prayed the rosary most evenings with a program broadcasted on EWTN.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, W. Allen and Bertha (Auger) Lewis. Her 2 brothers, Allen James Lewis and Raymond C. Lewis and her Grandson, Johnny Makela. She is survived by her daughter, Sherri Hayes of Minneapolis, MN and her son, John J. Makela of Mesa, AZ. Four Grandchildren: Courtney Christian of Minneapolis, MN., Taylor (Patrick) Watts of Bloomington, MN. Tenley and Aune Makela of Mesa, AZ. Four Great grandchildren: Monroe, Major, Madyn and Malone Watts of Bloomington, MN. Barbara is also survived by 5 Brothers: Robert E. Lewis, Hancock, MI. Donald J. Lewis, Columbus, Ohio, Jerre (Victoria) Lewis of Interlochen, MI William H. Lewis, Hancock, MI, Gregory (Kathy) Lewis, Crystal Lake, IL,  2 Sisters: Rosella (Art) Abramson, Erie, CO, Shirley (Terry) Baril, Hancock, MI Also, many nieces and nephews A Mass of Christian burial to be planned in May of 2022

Scott was born on March 11, 1967.  Scott was the second oldest son of James and Sharon (DuLong) Murphy.  He attended Lake Linden Elementary School and later moved to DePere, WI for a short time, before returning to the U.P.
Scott enjoyed fishing and the outdoors with his beloved pets, Rosco and Binky.
For a short period of time, Scott worked on the Mississippi Barges.  Afterwards, he was a drywaller in Aspen, Colorado, which he took great pride in. Scott was preceded in death by: parents-James and Sharon Murphy; grandparents-Weldon and Janet DuLong and Hal and Harriet Murphy. He is survived by: siblings- James L. Murphy, Robert T. Murphy, Kelly S. (Brandon) Schroyer and twin sister Kerri A.(Michael) Luoma, and Greg (Cora) Murphy; along with special nephew and niece-Christopher and Antrisha Luoma and their children-Paitynn (11), Emmett (8), Harper (4), and Maisie (2).

Obituary Preview: Lake Linden: Thomas Raymond Codere, 70, of Lake Linden, passed away unexpectedly on December 28, 2021, at UP Health System-Marquette.
He was born on December 28, 1951, at home on the family farm on Rice Lake Road, a twin son of Edward and Evelyn (Thibodeau) Codere.  He graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School in 1971.
Tom was self-employed as a potato farmer.  He worked for the Road Commission, Copper Country Homes, Our Lady of Mercy and as an over-the-road truck driver, most recently for American Service Line out of Green Bay until his retirement on May 17, 2021.
Tom was married to Sharon Dube at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in Hubbell on October 23, 1976.
He loved gardening, he enjoyed snowmobiling, and the Green Bay Packers.
He was preceded in death by: his parents-Edward and Evelyn Codere, and brothers-James, Gerald, and Gary.
He is survived by: his wife-Sharon; 4 children-Lisa Codere, Lori (Nick) Hacka, Jeff (Sarah) Codere, and Debra (Donald) Laitila; 8 grandchildren-Kadiesha Codere, D'Anthony Codere, Oliver Hacka, Wyatt Codere, Owen Codere, Arya Codere, Gavin Codere, and Dawson Laitila; sisters-Nancy Codere and Theresa Ebbinghaus; a brother-Ronald (Jeannine) Codere; sisters-in-law-Gladys Codere and Sharon Codere; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Obituary Preview: Lake Linden:  Marguerite Beaudoin, age 102, a resident of Rustic Meadows, was called to her eternal rest on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.
Marguerite was born on October 30, 1919, in Lake Linden, a daughter of Edmund and Alice (Madigan) Beaudoin.  She attended St. Anne's Academy and was a graduate of Lake Linden-Hubbell High School, in the class of 1938.  After graduation, Marge worked at Pearce Hardware.  She moved to the Detroit area soon after, where she worked for the Chrysler Corp for 35 years, retiring to care for her elderly mother.  She returned to the Copper Country in 2012, residing at Rustic Meadows.
Marge always had a smile for everyone and a great sense of humor.  She will be deeply missed by her nieces, Carol (Steve) Klobucarich and Joan (Grant) Racine, and her great-nieces and nephews, who always enjoyed their visits with her.  She is also survived by special cousins, Janne Potter and Beth (Frank) Cowger.
Marguerite was predeceased by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Joseph Kalcich, and her three brothers-Ransom, Robert, and Harold.
Many thanks to Marge's wonderful caregivers in the last year, who she loved dearly: Sandy, Edwana, Dawn, Donna, Judy, Nancy, Rita, Sandra, Sarah, and Patsy.

Justin was known for his big heart and contagious smile.  He was always first in line to help those in need, and loved making people feel happy and appreciated.  Justin loved to fix things, especially bikes and lawnmowers, a talent he had since his early childhood.  He loved riding his bike, collecting cans,spending time with his family, and many other hobbies.  He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Red Wings, never missing a game on TV.
Justin will be dearly missed by all the lives he touched in his community.
Preceding him in death was: his father-Eric Eugene VanGarsse; maternal grandparents-Lucretia and Ted Fisher; paternal grandparents-Gene and Kay VanGarsse; uncle-Ray VanGarsse; uncle-David Noye, and his niece-Sierra Jarvi.
He is survived by: his mother-Laurie VanGarsse of Calumet, sister-Rebecca VanGarsse, brother-in-law-Ryan Karpinen; aunts-Susan Fisher of Calumet, Judie (Sean) Reynolds of Wisconsin, and Sandra Ecker of Iron Mountain; uncle-Matthew Fisher of Wisconsin; nieces-Jasmyn Mytty, Isabella Fredrickson, Rosalee Karpinen, Aiyanah Karpinen, and Arielle Karpinen; nephew-Damon Fredrickson; along with numerous cousins and friends in his community, and his very special friend who was like a sister-Jenny Palosaari.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, siblings, and children-Benjamin, Mary Elizabeth, Daniel Skye, and William Ray.
John Henry is survived by: his wife-Kathy; sons and daughters-  Kenneth, Noah, Antonio, Brian, Alexander, Jennifer, Amber, Nicholas, Brittany, and Melinda; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; niece-Roxanne Stahl; special great niece-Melissa Haapala; and several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his mother-Patricia and grandparents-Germaine and John Klobuchar and Reuben "Red" and Valerie Dulong.
He is survived by: his father-Glenn J of Rice Lake Road; aunts and uncles-Charlene (Gerald) Lokajarvi, Keith "Keido" (Joanne) Klobuchar, Robin Mallet, Candance (Jeff) Mudrock, Kenny (Janet) Dulong, Carol (Gordon) Wetelainen, Barbara (Karl Wanink) Robbins, Gloria LaBonte, and Elaine (John Laitinen) Dulong , special friend-Joanie (Tony) Dupuis; along with many cousins and friends.

Michael was confirmed at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Hubbell.  He had been a member of the Tamarack City Fire Department.  He was a fan of Detroit Sports: the Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings, and the Lions.  Most of all, he loved his daughter.
He is survived by: His parents-Paul and Shirley, his daughter- Alice of Eau Claire; siblings- Suzanne (Mark) Miron, David (Laurie) Outinen, Lori (Dean) Isaacson, and Ronald Outinen; along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The Funeral Service will be at 11 A.M. on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden.  Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Friday, October 29, and for an hour before the funeral on Saturday, at the Pearce Funeral Home.  Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Lake Linden.
