Ray, James W. Ray, Lacy Ray, Lawrence A. Ray, Thelma L. Ray, Vernon Ray and Harold E. Ray. She is survived by eleven nieces and nine nephews.

MARY HOLLIS LEWIS - January 06, 1934 - January 05, 2021

Obituary Preview: Mary Louis Hollis Lewis is the daughter of the late Doman and Clara Hollis.  She was born in Cordele, Georgia on October 6, 1934.  She was the youngest of two children.  She is preceded in death by her brother Dorman Hollis Jr. and her parents.  On January 5th, 2021, the Lord, who loved her more, called her home.
Mary Lewis attended the public schools of Crisp county, Georgia.  She graduated from Fort Valley state University in 1957. she recieved her B.S. Degree in Home Economics Education.  Also, in May 1957,  She married the love of her life Charle Lewis, who was enlisted in the U.S. Army.  He was a wonderful husband, father and lifelong friend.
She taught school in both Georgia and North Carolina (Raeford).  Mary Lewis believed in furthering her education and took classes at ECU, UNC, UNC-G, NCSU, FSU and FTCC, to enhance her skills.  Mary Lewis was very much loved by the generations she touched in over 27 years as director of the Mount Sinai Day Care Center.
As a dedicated community leader, she received many honors and accolades, none more endearing than being named "Mother of the Year" in 1997/1998 by the Fayetteville branch of the NAACP.  She was featured in the Fayetteville News and Observer and recognized Statewide.   She was politically active for many years working  to ensure voter education to include working at the voter registration polls.  She was also a member of the NC Psychology Board, appointed by then Governor Martin.  She was an esteemed member of the Mount Sinai Church Mothers Board.  Beyond being a fanastic baker, everyone who ate at the Mount Sinai Family Life Center continuously came back faithfully every Sunday for a good home-cooked meal.  Her caring spirit left an indelible mark on your soul.  Mary Lewis will not soon be forgotten.
Mary and Charles Lewis were married for 62 years and blessed to know the love of the Lord and serve him fiercely as dedicated members of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church for decades.  They were fortunate to have five daughters - Marchanda Lewis, Michele Lewis, Charlette Lewis, Patricia Huff, and Crystal Brown (Theodore N. Brown II).  Mary was gifted with four grandchildren - Theodore "TJ" Brown III, Brianna Lewis, Ejessica Brown, and Marabbi Brown.  There are two great-grand-children as well, Zelaya and Chase Brown.

Ralph Orlando Carter - August 01, 1938 - November 11, 2020

Obituary Preview: Ralph Orlando Carter, 82, of St. Pauls, NC completed his lifetime on earth in peaceful slumber Wednesday, Veteran's Day, November 11, 2020 at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital.
He is survived by his loving wife Dietra Carter, his sons:  Greg, Allen and Dominique Carter:  three siblings:  Ray, Gwen, and Margeret Carter:  twelve grandchildren,  two great grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
Ralph was born August 1, 1938 to the late Rowena and Fred Carter of Wilson, N.C. as the firstborn in a large family of 9 siblings.  The Carter Family later moved to Fayetteville, N.C. where he concluded his schooling at E. E. Smith High School.
Only a few days after his 17th birthday in 1955, Ralph opted for a globetrotting career in the United States Navy where he served honorably for twenty years.
He sailed around the world to Panama. the Indian Ocean. Indochina and beyond.  His service on the destroyer escort ship, the USS Tripp (FF-1705, brought him in active combat zones during the Vietnam War where he led vital ship maintenance as Boiler Technician Petty Officer First Class. Ralph retired from his naval service in1975 having earned the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
After the Navy, Ralph ventured to Quebec, Canada where he worked, learned French, married, bought a home, and had his first children. Although his home life in Canada did not last in 1995 Ralph resettled in his old hometown of Fayetteville where he met Dietra where she worked at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.  After a few years of courting, the moved to a quiet country home on an verdant acre outside of St. Paul's where they remained happily married for over twenty years.
Ralph and Dietra spent their golden years together happily at their Robeson County home.  Ralph enjpyed vacationing with his wife, fishing, and tinkering with the latest consumer technologies, all favorite pastimes kindled early in his naval career.

Obituary Preview: January 22, 1929, Danny "Uncle Buck" King Jr. blessed his late parents, Danny and Emma King with his life in Jackson, NC. Even though we wanted him here with us, God needed him.  September 19, 2020, Danny King Jr. gained his wings.
Danny King Jr. joined Bethel AME Zion Church at an early age, where he served as a class leader, steward, Sunday school scholar and a member of the male choir.  He devoted 47 years as a laborer at Stryker Golf Course were he retired.  He also worked at Rockfeller Estate as a laborer for 2 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sitting on the porch watching and listening to baseball games.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mattie McIver-King, his brothers Frank King, Richard King, Julius King, Robert and Roland King.  His sisters Gladys Johnson, Cattie Banks, Erie Jones and Ella Mae King.  One surviving sister-in-law, Senorita King.
His is survived by his stepdaughter Bettye A. Davis, brothers, Clyde "Tibbye" King and Marvin "Buster" King.  Five step grandchildren, Rodney Ruskin (Charlotte, NC), Don King (Virginia), Carrol Brown (Fayetteville, NC), Eugene Lawson (Maryland) and Ralpheal Ruskin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Close to his heart Cristine Jones, Susie Jones, Mary Rogers and Clifford Hall. Acknowledgements:

Lorraine Alneta Tillmon - August 23, 1911 - August 29, 2020

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Lorraine Alneta Sanders Tillmon, of Spring Lake, NC, passed away quietly on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital. She recently celebrated her 109th birthday.  Born on August 23, 1911 in Victoria, Texas to the late Mary and Randall Sanders, Lorraine lived a quiet but impactful life.  She enjoyed bridge, bingo and bowling, and excelled at all three.  A woman of great faith, she was a charter member of JFK Memorial Chapel where she was a lay reader, a member of Protestant Women of the Church and sang in the choir. She was the member of many clubs, including the Ft. Bragg NCO Wives Club and a charter member the Tacoma City Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc. in Tacoma, WA.  She spent over half of her life as a Red Cross volunteer. She enjoyed gardening and growing her beautiful flowers. Lorraine received a commendation from President Barack Obama on the occasion of her 100th birthday and a special proclamation from the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners recognizing her amazing life on the occasion of her 102nd birthday.  Lorraine, or “MeeMee” or “Mama Tillmon” as she was affectionately called, was a beloved military wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.  All who knew her on her 109-year journey of life were inspired by her and she will be greatly missed.
Preceded in death by her husband, James T Tillmon, her brothers Elliott Sanders and Leo Sanders, and her granddaughter Manuela Jeffries, she leaves behind many to cherish her memory and honor her legacy: her daughter, Dr. Marye J. Jeffries; her grandchildren Harold Jeffries (Lindy), Michael Jeffries (Dot), Kimberly Jeffries Leonard (Stephen), and Kenneth Jeffries; eleven great-grandchildren and a host of great- great-grandchildren. Obituary Preview: Mable Lilly Robinson, daughter of the late Armstead and Octavia Martin Lilly was born in Rockingham, NC on March 20, 1929. She was the fifteenth child of sixteen children born to her parents. On Tuesday evening, August, 25, 2020 the Lord, our Savior requested Mable's presence and peacefully called her home.
Aunt Mable attended the public schools of Richmond County and joined Pleasant Hill AMF Zion Church as a child. She attended Shaw University in Raleigh, NC, graduated and pursued a career in education. After moving to Fayetteville, NC she became a member of Lewis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
Aunt Mable was united in holy matrimony with the late Gilbert Acker Robinson of Winston, Salem, NC on August 22, 1956. Though they had no children of their own, Aunt Mable's life was dedicated to students and all children whose lives touched in a positive manner.
We accept with humility God's plan and will honor her legacy of love: a dedicated niece and her family, Carolyn Lilly-Nelson, great niece, Danya S. Nelson (Jerome), Nia Simone Nelson (great-great niece), Niles Daniel Nelson (great-great nephew); nephew, Daniel W. Obituary Preview: On Tuesday, August 4, 2020, God in his infinite wisdom saw fit to deliver Mr. David W. Lindsey from his labor to reward.  He was born July 21, 1938, in Winchester, Massachusetts to the late John and Helen Lindsey.  He was one of 14 children.
David graduated from Winchester High School in Winchester, Mass. After graduation, David enlisted in the United States Air Force.  After rendering service in the military he went on to have a career as a chef and as a representative with various financial institutions.
After his military career, David enjoyed leisure travel to places  that would peak his curiosity and its historical origins.
David was and avid reader of books of different interesting topics and adventures. Especially anything about sports and cooking.  He loved to cook and try new recipes that he would serve his friends and family excitedly.  Gardening was also a favorite of his, which he would proudly share his vegetables or fruits.
He was also known for being an impeccably neat individual who, would consistently exude a neat and pristine appearance. He would willingly assist and help anyone in need and was very appreciative of any assistance rendered to him.
David leaves to cherish fond memories: four remaining siblings, Elizabeth Cordice of Sacramento, California Elinor Neville of Boston, Massachusetts, Richard Lindsey of Mesquite, Texas and Robert Lindsey of Boston, Massachusetts;  he also has a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Obituary Preview: Lillie Lee Pierce Gregory was the youngest born to the late James Zollie and Rossie Lee Simmons Pierce on September 9, 1934. She transitioned to her new life on June 16, 2020.
Lillie attended the Fayetteville City Schools and graduated from E. E. Smith Senior High School with the class of 1953. She also graduated from Fayetteville State Teacher's College now known as Fayetteville State University in 1957. She was raised in the College Heights community and baptized at Mount Sinai Baptist Church where she was a very active and devoted member. She served as a deaconess, church clerk, Bible School teacher, usher, Pastor's Aid Ministry member, and Seniors with a Purpose Ministry member (SWAP). She taught in North Carolina (Robeson and Cumberland Counties), Columbus, Georgia and Denver, Colorado. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. the VFW, Fayetteville State University Alumni Association, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Cumberland County Retired teacher, Senior Road Runners and Martin Luther King Committee-founding board member. Lillie was very active and dedicated in all that she did until her health hindered her participation.
Lillie was preceded in death by four sisters (Sarah, Ethel, Elline, and Loree) and four brothers (John, James "Billie", Jimmie, and Earl).
Lillie leaves to celebrate her life: her loving and devoted husband, Harlon Gregory; her beloved sister, E. Dorine Pierce McLaurin; her sisterly niece; Perbena Walker; her devoted niece Rossie Clagett, C. Shadawn Clagett, and Carolyn Walker who aided and assisted her during her failing health; A host of other very special nieces and nephews; and other family and friends. She was a godmother to some of her nieces and nephews but covered them all with her protective love and support.

Carolyn relocated to Newark, New Jersey where she completed her education at South Side High School in Newark, New Jersey. After employment in Home Services, she returned to Fayetteville, North Carolina in 2003, where she devoted her entire life to the love and care of her friends, family and especially her son. She was a kind and loving person who loved all of her family whether near or far. Which was a characteristic passed down to all those that she met. Anyone who knew her can attest to her loving spirit and giving spirit. She was generous, kind hearted and unselfish in interactions with others. Her strength was persevering. Obituary Preview: Jerry Balem Farmer departed this life on December 20. 2019. Jerry was the youngest of 11 children born to the late Arthur Farmer Sr. and Josephine Hargrove Farmer on April 6, 1949 in Fayetteville, N.C,
At an early age, Jerry joined New Bethel AME Zion Church and remained a member until his death. He was educated in the Cumberland County Schools and attended Anne Chestnutt High School. Early in his adult life, Jerry moved to New York to work with one of his oldest brothers, Garland, in his carpentry business.  After spending many years in New York, he returned to North Carolina where he continued to assist with carpentry work. Jerry enjoyed the outdoors, working around the yard and in the garden.
Jerry embraced life to the fullest and brought fun and laughter wherever he went. Although Jerry had health challenges in life, he loved to talk on the and phone and would frequently call his daughter, nieces and nephews just to check on them. He always liked an impromptu visit from family and friends. He was a kind, funny man and will be greatly missed.
Jerry leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter, Cassandra Williams Clifton (Aparicio), grandson, Cameron J. Clifton, and granddaughter, Carrington J. Clifton of Raleigh, NC. one sister, Mary Elizabeth Montgomery of Durham, NC, two brothers,Thomas H. Farmer (Ellen) and Roscoe A. Cecil Malone - January 23, 1930 - December 07, 2019

Obituary Preview: Cecil Malone "Big C" or Par Tee" was born to the late Goode Malone and Fannie May Malone on January 23, 1930 in Blytheville, Arkansas.  He as the youngest of four children. Airborne Ranger Malone departed this life early Saturday Morning, December 7, 2019, at the age of 89 following a recent illness. He was educated in the public school system of Cleveland, Ohio and joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17.  He "soldiered" from May 1946 until his retirement in December 1968.  During his military career, one of the proudest moments was completing Airborne School in 1948 at Fort Benning, Georgia.  It later translated into his passion of free-fall skying, which he enjoyed until his mid-70's. He was honored to return to pin jump-wings on his wife, Joyce and to in laws - MSGT  (Ret) Rosetta Pratt Norwood, and her brother Corporal RoAnthony Pratt.
He proudly served as a member of the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion and later as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. His service led him to join the Special Forces Operation Command and US Army 7th Ranger Company. As a young soldier, he fell in love with track and field and made hid mark as the fastest, high hurdler and sprinter races at Fort Bragg.  Mr. Malone fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars with tours of duty in Panama, Canal, Japan, and Germany.  After 22 years, he retired at the rank of Sergeant First Class, following his tour in Vietnam.
Before retirement, his life would change forever. He and a friend drove down Murchison Road, made a left on Jasper Street to Seabrook Road into Broadell Homes, where he found his wife Joyce Hadley. They were married October 1962.  From this union his eldest child, Patricia Delzora, was born and baby girl Constance Joyce, was born during a three year tour in Ancon, Canal Zone, Panama.
Following retirement Ranger Malone was employed with the Special Forces Operations Command in the John F. Kennedy Center as a supply clerk specialist.  His federal civil employment lasted 20 years rounding out 42 years of government service.  He also earned an Associates degree from Shaw University Extension Campus.
He believed in and lived his favorite "Rangers Lead the Way" Leading in the practice of giving and forgiving with a humble heart, he knew his family mattered most. Family travel and holidays were spent together, and in times of need, they were there for one another as the family is on this day.
He was preceded in death by his parents,two brothers, Joe ans Aaron, and one sister, Lillie, all of Cleveland, Ohio.
He leaves behind, his wife, Joyce: two daughters, Patricia and Constance, his most loyal son-in-law, Roosevelt: two granddaughters, Kayla Janae and Chelsea Janelle; and his best friend, Ivy Green: a host of nieces, nephews, extend family, friends,the loving members of College Heights Presbyterian Church and the military community. Melody was a very happy child, she had a smile that would brighten anyone's day. Melody has been a fighter since she was born, although family was told that she would only survive 6 months, God has other plans and she lived until her eighth birthday.
Despite her short time on earth, she was deeply loved and brought immense joy to all around her. She will truly be missed.

After leaving the service, he became a truck driver and drove trucks for several years. In later life, he became a handyman and did this line of work until he became ill. Samuel leaves to cherish his memories: his son Dane Best (fiancee Kia) of Savannah, GA;  one sister Deloris Pritchett and one brother David Best (Glory) of Fayetteville, N.C. and one grandson, Denim Best of Savannah, GA. and the mother of his son; Patricia Epps of Woodbine, GA, two nephews: Donald David Pritchett, Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and David Antonio Best of Tampa, FL and a host of other family members and friends. He loved and was loved by lots of friends. Samuel was a kind and loving brother, full of fun and very enjoyable to be with. We will miss him greatly!

Thus on October 12, 2019 the God of love chose one of his angels to deliver he gentle & loving soul of Delores Alberta Thomas from her earthly labor to her eternal rest. Delores was born on  January 1, 1933 to Arthur Thomas Sr. and Sally Thomas who preceded her in death.
Her early education began in the public school of Durham County where she graduated from Hillside High School. Her higher education included graduation from Deshazor's Beauty College in Durham and Certified Nursing Training.
Delores' many excellent and dedicated years of service to others was spent at the Psychiatric Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC for over 31 years.
After retirement, she continued to care for others as a CNA and a caretaker. She was an amazing cook and often fed the community. Delores was famous for her sweet potato pies and home cooked meals. She was preceded in death by her daughter Elaine Thomas. She leaves to keep all her most precious memories a grand daughter; Quintina M. Thomas, brother; Arthur Thomas Jr., and sister Gertrude T. Davis.

Sylvia loved the Lord, was known by many to be outgoing, bold, a social butterfly, could brighten up any dark room, and very compassionate. Sylvia loved to sing and those that knew her would say she always would sing "Me, my God & I".  Sylvia attended Word Church of Deliverance with Pastor W. Elliott Jr. presiding and has attended Hope Christian Outreach Center (Pastor Willie Snead), Church of God of Prophecy(Bishop F. Taylor), and Good News Revival Center (Pastor L. Hicks).
Sylvia leaves to cherish sister Shirley Jones,several nieces and nephews,8 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Dr. Rodney A. Burrows, 89, of Hallandale Beach , Florida and Fayetteville, North Carolina passed Saturday, October 5, 2019.  He was a long-time member of  St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville.
Dr. Burrows was a graduate of Hampton University and received his master's degree from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. In l968, he married the late Dr. Evelyn Honor Burrows, a fellow graduate of Hampton and Ohio State Universities.  He served on the faculties of Southern University, Florida A & M University and Faytteville State University and is survived by three children, Bruce, Charlotte and Stephanie;  four grandchildren;  seven siblings;  and a loving extended family.  In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Evelyn H. Obituary Preview: Retired Sergeant Major Boncrosby "Bob" Blakeney was called home to be with the Lord, on September 16, 2019 at the age of 81. He was preceded by his father, Samuel H. Blakeney, mother Inary Blakeney and daughter Yolanda Blakeney Avery.  The union with Barbara Ann Burnette blessed them with four children, Yolanda, Kevin (Cindy) Stephen and Tina Blakeney Danzy (Cyrus) and grandchildren Cedrick, Charles, Tynia,Chanel, Christian, Brianna, Aaliyah, and Ethan.  Four great grandchildren Isabella, Tristian, Jurnee, and Marianna.  He will be missed by his nieces Laura Carroll, Brenda, Ivory, and nephew Rusty;  extended family Carrie Johnson, John Burnette, and Robert Burnette, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Boncrosby entered into this world on Thursday, February 3,1938 in Washington D.C. He attended Armstrong Tech High School in Washington D.C. and later at George Washington Carver Regional High School in Culpepper, VA.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army, got married and started a family; thus beginning his 30 years of exemplary military service. His military career started with basic training at Fort Jackson, SC and Advance Infantry and Jump School at Fort Campbell, KY with the 187th RCT and later with the 101st Abn Div. After two years with 101st Abn Div he was assigned to the 504th Abn Battle Group in Mainz, Germany. Upon completing his assignment with the 504th Abn Battle Group he volunteered for Special Forces training at Fort Bragg, NC.
Bob completed three tours in the Republic of Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group. On his second tour, he worked under the direction of a CIA agent with a Cambodian tribe conducting provincial, reconnaissance and intelligence gathering in Cambodia against the Viet Cong.
Sometime later he completed a tour of duty in the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division South Korea. After completing that tour, he was selected to attend the Sergeant Major Academy in Class 13. After graduation he was promoted to Sergeant Major and assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group. After two years as a B team Sergeant Major, he was pulled to the 7th Group Headquarters as the Operations Sergeant Major. After serving in this capacity for two years he was assigned to SOCOM as the G3 Operations Sergeant Major.
In 1985, after giving 30 years of service to this country he retired as Sgt. Major. Upon his retirement, he entered into Fayetteville Technical Community College where he recieved an Associate degree in Business Administration. Prior to completing school., he was sought out to teach the Disciplines of Intelligence at the Operations & Intelligence School at the Special Warfare Center (SWC). Soon after he was assigned to the 1st Bn SWC he was pulled to the Doctrine and Operational Development (DOTD) in the Training Development Division as the Deputy to the Chief of the Division. He maintained this position until he retired after 16 years as a government civilian employee.
His military awards and decoration include the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and other various service awards that include the Master Parachutist and Vietnamese Parachutist Wings.
Bob was a member of Bethel AME Zion Church for many years, where he worked on the Steward Board and was a member of the Male Chorus. On the Steward Board, he was responsible for the accountability and disbursement of church funds. He served in this capacity with great devotion. Bob had a deep passion for golfing in which he made many friends from. He also was an avid Washington Redskins fan and he enjoyed watching the games with his family Kevin, Steve, Terry, Ty, and Myles. He loved spending time with his family on their yearly beach vacations and Sunday dinners. Bob was profound, disciplined, respected, admired, and most of all LOVED!

Obituary Preview: As youth gave way to age, health gave way to illness and on September 13, 2019 life gave way to death and our beloved Theodore Horace Hartley entered his eternal home.
Mr. Hartley was born to the late Horace Hartley, Sr. and Sadie Jenkins in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the oldest of four children.
He joined the Navy at an early age and served for six years.  He later showed his patriotism by joining the Army for twenty years.
In 1987 he became a member of Second Baptist Missionary Church.  He later moved his membership to Household of Faith World Outreach Center until his health began to fail.  He joined the choir, was an usher and enjoyed Sunday School.
Mr. Hartley met no strangers.  He just loved people and was always full of humor. Buster is missing his master, and he loved Buster his dog very much.  With grateful hearts we give thanks to God for lending him to us.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories:  his loving wife of 35 years.
