She was the oldest of five children and grew up attending county school.
In 1938 Doris graduated from Selden High School and moved on to teaching at a number of different country schools in NWKS. Over the years she always recognized and pointed out former students, telling us stories of her teaching days. Doris began to date Cleland Sloan and soon after traveled to California to marry him on July 6th, 1942. The product of this marriage was three beautiful children (Judy, Tom, and Cindi) and a life full of love. While Cleland was in Europe serving the United States during WW ll Doris moved back to her hometown. Not long after her return home Judy was born. After the war Cleland returned and the family moved to Selden. They then decided to move their family to Norton County. Shortly after the move Doris’ husband joined the national guard and it was back to military life for her. During this time, she worked at JM McDonalds until 1963 when Cleland was transferred to Oklahoma City. The city life was quite a change for the family. After four years they were transferred again to Heidelberg Germany in 1967. In ’72 Doris moved back to Oberlin while Cleland served in Vietnam. A short year later they picked up and moved again, this time to Manhattan KS. Doris retired in Manhattan after working as a Saleswoman in a retail clothing store. In 1984 the couple decided to spend some time traveling and spent their winter in South Texas. This lasted for 4 years or so until Cleland passed away. After her husband’s death Doris moved yet again, back to Oberlin. She became very active in her church and community, and even started a widows’ group that continued for years. Doris invested in The Dresser, an upcoming retail store that is still serving the people of Oberlin today. She loved to volunteer and especially enjoyed unpacking the articles of clothing the store would receive. Traveling was a great passion of Doris’ and in 2000 she was able to have another big trip with all her friends to celebrate her 80th birthday on a bus tour of Europe.
She had a wonderful sense of humor with a touch of temperament and shake of sarcasm. She was always able to joke around while still demanding respect from those around her. Doris found family time to be very important and loved spending time with all her children and extended family. At any get together you could always find her in the kitchen, cooking up a storm and tending to everyone’s needs.
