Ronald Lee Wiley - October 04, 1937 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Ronald L. Wiley (86), of Oxford, passed away (04/22/2024) at The Knolls of Oxford. Ron was born October 4, 1937 at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, OH during the 1937 flood.  His parents were Raymond K. and Emma Matilene (Cartwright) Wiley, his older brother Roger (survives, living in Georgia.)
At less than one year of age the family moved to Darrtown, OH, where he put down what would become roots that flourished in the village for many years. His boyhood was nurtured by several Darrtown natives, the most important mentor being Dale Bufler.  Dale led a group of Darrtown boys in many learning experiences and projects, including scrap and paper drives during WWII, raising money to buy uniforms for baseball and basketball teams that toured Butler County, playing teams from other towns and rural schools.  He took them to Clark’s Sporting Goods store in Hamilton, where they stretched their money and bought the least expensive basketball shirts available.  They were purple; thus, the team came up with the mascot name, the Darrtown Purple Skunks.
He attended Collinsville through the sixth grade, then Jr. High and Sr. High School at Seven Mile HS (later becoming Edgewood), graduating in 1955.
He then attended Miami University, graduating in 1959 with a B.S. in Ed. Degree, majoring in Comprehensive Science.  He was a member of Kappa Phi Kappa, men’s Education Fraternity, and was named their Outstanding Senior Man in 1959. He taught Biology at Talawanda HS for three years. On June 18, 1961 he married Linda Hartley of Piqua, OH.  She passed away on October 6, 1980. Their son Matthew Eric was born, November 28, 1965. He lives in Concho Valley, Arizona.
On August 15, 1981 he married Kathryn Young, of a longstanding Oxford family of business owners and Miami graduates. They enjoyed travels to historic American sites, European trips and yearly vacations at a cabin in Michigan, and winters at a condo in Fountain Hills, Arizona. And much pleasure was often enjoyed in short trips from home, with the current pet dog, taking in the seasonal beauty of the countryside.
Ron earned a Ph. D. in Physiology & Biophysics at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1966. Following a one-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the VA Hospital in West Allis, WI and teaching at Marquette Medical School, he returned to Miami University on the faculty in the Department of Zoology (now Biology).  His four-year plan to stay at Miami stretched into 37 years, teaching General Physiology and Cardiopulmonary Physiology. Hundreds of his students became physicians, dentists, physical therapists and physiology researchers throughout the world.  He published scientific articles on the control of breathing and the control of blood pressure.  A serendipitous discovery led to developing a handgrip device to control blood pressure and other devices for effective rehabilitation and strengthening of muscle groups, with a business partner from Columbus, OH.
An avid sports fan and supporter, he helped recruit athletes for nearly every sport at Miami, served on the Athletic Advisory Board and the Hall of Fame/Cradle of Coaches Committee.
He served on many university and community boards and committees.  His most satisfying volunteer effort was the result of his Darrtown roots stimulated by his friend from second grade, Fred Lindley’s phone call that Darrtown would become 200 years old in 2014.  With Fred and other deeply caring Darrtown natives a committee planned and produced the Darrtown Bicentennial in July, 2014, drawing more than three thousand attendees, and initiating projects in the Memorial Park to place trees, shrubs, a Veterans memorial monument and walkways with memorial pavers. After the Bicentennial, it became the Darrtown Reunion Committee to plan and hold a reunion celebration, the Darrtown Fall Festival, in the village each fall.
He had a lifelong passion for gardening, focusing on trees, shrubs and perennials of the Midwest, but couldn’t resist including in his garden a few interesting specimens from other parts of the U.S and even foreign countries as they complemented the native plants. He was most pleased when visitors, especially young children came to tour the garden, and when plants matured and he could divide them and share plants with others.  He enjoyed all the birds, especially hummingbirds, and the butterflies and bees attracted to the garden. He especially liked watching the hummingbird moths at the flowers.  He tolerated the squirrels, but loathed the foraging deer, the raccoon and the moles, making the battle to defend the garden against them a passion.
Another passion was cooking.  He learned very early on as a boy from his mother.  He enjoyed trying new recipes, then modifying them to add his personal touch. He enjoyed sharing his cooking with others, either entertaining in their home, tailgating, or providing soups for someone recovering from an illness.
Ron is survived by his wife, Kathryn Young Wiley of Oxford; his son Matthew Eric, granddaughter Linda Lea, and grandson Tyler Matthew all of Concho Valley, Arizona.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
The family has suggested memorial donations in Ron’s name to the Darrtown Reunion Committee for upkeep of the Memorial Park’s trees, shrubs and walkway pavers or The Knolls of Oxford Future Care Fund.

James Donald Adams - March 30, 1947 - March 17, 2024

Departed: 03/17/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: James Adams died March 17, 2024, at the Knolls of Oxford, where he had lived since 2020. He was 76. Jim was surrounded by loving friends and family in his final days of life and was with his two children when he passed.
The son of Paul Adams and Mary Houts Adams, Jim was born on March 30, 1947, in Celina, Ohio, and grew up in Coldwater, Ohio, with his parents; his sister, Janet; and his brother, Douglas (“Jack”). He graduated in 1965 from Coldwater High School, where he played football.
In the fall of 1965 he moved to Oxford, Ohio, to attend Miami University. His years there fostered a lifelong love for the school. He was a member of Delta Chi fraternity and sang with the men’s glee club. He met his first wife, Sara Puterbaugh, as a junior; they married shortly after graduating in 1969 and moved to Hamilton, Ohio, where they raised two children — Jennifer and Peter — and were active members of Grace United Methodist Church.
In the early 1970s, Jim worked as a director of activities at Miami University’s Hamilton campus and helped manage men’s athletics there, including the golf team. He also announced men’s basketball games at Millett Hall, on Miami’s main campus, until 1982. In 1977, he became an agent with the New York Life Insurance Company and later founded his own company, CFC Benefits, adding group health plans and benefits to his services. For over 40 years he found great reward in helping people care for their loved ones through financial planning. He also found meaning and fellowship in his decades of community service with the Lindenwald Kiwanis Club of Hamilton/Fairfield.
In 1987, Jim married his second wife, Debbie Trester, and was a devoted stepfather to her two children, Alissha and Lance. In 2002, he purchased and operated Cotton Run Stables, a 65-acre boarding and riding facility that took Jim back to his childhood love of horses.
Jim was an extraordinarily warm and charismatic person, and a deeply loving father. His children remember his bright and open personality, his humor, his reverence for traditions — both new and old — and his ever-present Nikon camera. They remember, perhaps above all, his love of music: singing and stories punctuated by his acoustic guitar. His children cannot remember a time in which people didn’t regularly approach them to share how much they adored their father. “We just love your dad!” was a common refrain throughout their lives — from their earliest memories with their father to their very last ones.
He was known for his hoaxes and humor, his selfless desire to help others and his drive to succeed. He had a great passion for golf, which he played avidly for most of his life. He also loved aviation and earned his pilot’s license in the 1980s. And he sang throughout his life: at first at home with his mother, who nurtured his love of music, and then later in a special men’s quartet at Miami, in church, at weddings and, most memorably, at home before bedtime.
Jim’s parents and his brother predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Paul) Gray; his son, Peter (Michelle) Adams; his grandchildren Paige, Katie and Ethan; and his sister, Janet Lee, and her children David, Michelle, Matt and Kristen. Jim valued his family as a source of true joy and brought them light, levity and love.
Visitations will be at Paul R. Young Funeral Home in Oxford, Ohio, on Friday, March 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 23, from 10 to 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held at Oxford United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Contributions in memory of Jim can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.

Joan L. Green - July 28, 1944 - March 03, 2024

Departed: 03/03/2024 (Oxford)
Obituary Preview: Joan Green, 79, of Oxford, passed away peacefully at her home on March 3rd, 2024. Services will be held at The Knolls of Oxford at 10:00 am on April 12, 2024.
Joan Lee Christiansen was born on July 28, 1944, in Davenport, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Herbert Christiansen (2001) and Donna Mae Geertz (2017), and her husband of nearly 54 years, John Montgomery Green (2020).
After attending Davenport Central High School, where she graduated with honors and served as the yearbook’s editor-in-chief, Joan entered Drake University in Des Moines. Majoring in French and English, she graduated with honors and a degree in Education in 1966. During her college years, Joan was the chapter president of Delta Gamma sorority; served on the editorial staff of her college yearbook; was a member of Angel Flight (an honorary auxiliary to a Drake Air Force ROTC unit) and Mortar Board (a scholarship, leadership, and service honor society); served as president of Phi Sigma Iota (an honorary romance language fraternity); was crowned Miss Drake in 1964 and Greek Week Queen in 1965; and in her senior year, was listed in Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities.
Following her graduation, Joan married John M. Green on August 27, 1966, in Davenport, Iowa. After working for Better Homes and Gardens in Des Moines for several years, she and John became the proud parents of Matthew (1968) and Lee Anne (1971). In 1977, after moving to Nebraska, Joan used her extensive needlepoint design knowledge to embark on a career in the needle art business opening the Stitching Post needlework and yarn shop. After moving with her family to Oxford in 1987, she continued with her needlepoint and cross stitch business, now known as Designs by Joan Green. In more than 40 years, she created more than 3,200 needlepoint, counted cross stitch, counted beadwork, and beaded jewelry designs, and wrote, designed, or contributed to more than 115 pattern booklets and 24 full-length books. During her long career, Joan won many awards in the craft and needlework industry; served as a monthly columnist for Crafts Magazine and as national president of the Society of Craft Designers; Editor of the Society of Craft Designers Newsletter; had her designs featured in 12 consumer publications and large mail order catalogs; was honored when one of her ornaments was chosen for the White House Christmas tree; and had one of her designs featured on “Needle Art Studio,” a PBS show. During the last several years, her fellow residents at The Knolls were treated to several exhibits celebrating her 40-plus years as a needle artist. An incredibly active and vital person, Joan’s zest for life and learning never waned. She was a prolific reader; a lifelong lover of bridge and games of all stripes, interior decorating, house design, fashion, and jewelry; and an accomplished cook who authored a cookbook combining her love of cooking and entertaining with many of her food-related needlework creations. She was an inveterate traveler with a special interest in international travel and other cultures, as well as a great lover of nature, art, music, and poetry, which brought her a lifetime of immense satisfaction. Many of her wide-ranging interests resulted in her being a valued member of countless organizations and groups such as P.E.O., various book clubs, Current Events Club, numerous bridge groups, a Bible study group, and a Sunday afternoon “Games Group.”
Although self-reliant and independent, Joan was sorely tested and challenged by husband John’s many health problems during the last decade of his life. After serving as a wonderfully supportive helpmate, advocate, and caretaker, she received her own cancer diagnosis in 2022. Despite the devastating news, Joan’s unflagging optimism, courage, and grace in the face of increasingly daunting health challenges set a wonderful example for family and friends. She never surrendered her belief that she was extremely blessed in having the support of her family and her many loving and caring friends.
Above all else, the real touchstone of Joan’s life was her family. Until the very end, she stayed completely involved in the activities of her two children and four grandchildren, enjoying and celebrating their accomplishments and the wonderful people they’d become. Her infectious love of games of all kinds instilled a tradition in the entire family.  Time spent over the years will be cherished by her grandchildren and certainly carried forward for generations to come.  Joan is survived by her son and daughter-in-law (Matthew & Paula Green, Oxford, OH); her daughter and son-in-law (Lee Anne and David Vitatoe, Virginia Beach, VA); her four grandchildren (Nico and Luca Vitatoe and Valerie and Norah Green); and her two brothers and their wives (Dana & Patty Christiansen, Gresham, OR, and Scott & Carol Christiansen, Iowa City, IA).

Bill Pulley was active in a number of organizations.  In his younger days, he served as Lay Leader and Chairman of the Board of the Oxford United Methodist Church.  He was President of the Oxford Rotary Club in 1973-74 and had over three decades of perfect attendance.  He was actively involved with Miami University as a charter and long time member of the Business Advisory Council, Trustee of the Miami University Foundation from 1998-2004 and Chair of the Graduate School’s Campaign Committee for Miami’s Capital Gifts Campaign.
Bill shared his passion for travel with his family and created wonderful, everlasting memories with them.  He loved his many friends in Oxford and for over 50 years he especially enjoyed monthly gatherings with his Supper Club friends.
Bill Pulley is survived by his wife of 72 years, Martha Lee, son, Jeffrey Pulley and his wife, Valerie Pulley, of Charleston, SC, and grandchildren, Stephen Pulley and Kara Leigh McPoland (Mark) and one great grandson, Greyson McPoland.  A daughter, Mary Lynn, son, William (Chip) Pulley, and his brother, Bob, preceded him in death.  His brothers Tom and John Pulley (Mary), along with many nieces and nephews, survive Bill.
