William "Farmer Bill" McDowell - May 23, 1932 - January 30, 2024

Departed: 01/30/2024 (Muncie)
Obituary Preview: William “Farmer Bill” McDowell, 91, passed away at his residence, surrounded by his loving family on January 30, 2024, in Muncie, Indiana.  William was born on May 23, 1932, the son of Leonard and Flaura (McKee) McDowell, in Moorehead, Kentucky.
William made his way to Muncie and worked for Ball Brothers and then worked for and retired from General Motors, Ft. Wayne.  He was known for several unique things in Muncie, including buying and selling things, fixing lawn furniture, and repairing bicycles.  But what he was best known for was growing and selling vegetables by his southside residence, where everyone called him “Farmer Bill”.
William was described as a loving but ornery man, that would be the first person to give the shirt off of his back to help someone.  He was a man who lived by his words and expected others to do so, a trait that he passed on to his grandchildren. He loved gardening, splitting firewood, classic country music, and talking, perhaps even gossiping.  But what he was most appreciated for by his family was his undying love for his “babies,” his grandchildren.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his granddaughter Christal Hicks (Mitchell), grandson Scotty McDowell, seven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and his daughter-in-law, Christine McDowell.
He was preceded in death by both parents, his wife, Darlene McDowell, son William McDowell, grandson, Brian Michael McDowell, and sisters Elsie Newton, and Helen “Maxine” West.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 1:00 PM, at Parson Mortuary in Muncie.  Friends may visit on Monday evening at Parson, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, or from 12:00 PM until the time of the service on Tuesday.  Burial will follow at Tomlinson Cemetery.
