David E. Oberlin - June 10, 1927 - May 13, 2024

Departed: 05/13/2024 (Massillon)
Obituary Preview: David E. Oberlin, 96, of Jackson Twp. passed away at his home on Monday, May 13, 2024. Born in Mansfield, Ohio to Ray C. and Esther Hess Oberlin, June 10, 1927, he graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1945 and moved to Massillon to reside with his uncle and aunt, Charles S. and Anna Oberlin Stough. He attended Western Reserve University, graduated from the College of Wooster and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his Masters in Classical Studies in 1950. On August 9,1952 he married Beverly J. West of Euclid, OH, whom he met at Wooster. They thereupon sailed to Europe visiting London, Paris and Rome before becoming students at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece for six months. They then participated in the University of Pennsylvania’s 1953 summer archaeological expedition at Gordion, Turkey, and then worked at the University site at Kourion, Cyprus.
In 2014, David received a book, “Classical Spies -American Archaeologists with the OSS in World War II Greece”, by Susan Heuck Allen. To his astonishment he learned that many of the professors he studied under at the American School and at the Gordian expedition had been important American spies helping the Greeks against the invaders from Italy and Germany during the war. After returning to Massillon in 1954, David began his teaching career at Washington High School, beginning with one half year of Mechanical Drawing and History until finally teaching English and 2nd, 3rd and 4th year Latin. In 1960, Stark County Latin teachers formed an organization so that their students could come together each year for Olympic Day at Brunnerdale Seminary. The highlight of this event was the chariot races; each school constructed its own chariot that was pulled by two boys and then two girls. Later an Academic challenge program consisting of questions on the Latin language, classical mythology, history, and archaeology was added.
In 1965 David served as president of the Ohio Classical Conference, an association of secondary school Latin teachers and college professors of Latin, Greek and Classical Archaeology. During the spring session of the 1969-1970 school year, he taught a course of advanced Latin at Walsh College after his regular high school schedule. He retired in 1985 after 31 ½ years having served as chairman of the foreign language department and as chairman of the English department. In April 1987, Mayor Delbert Demmer appointed David to a two year term on the Historic Preservation Committee of Massillon.
David was a 80 year member of Central Presbyterian Church, also a member of Spring Hill Historic Home, Massillon Heritage Foundation and the Ohio Genealogical Society. He greatly enjoyed researching family genealogy (his great, great, great grandfather Adam Oberlin, a revolutionary War veteran, and his great, great grandfather Peter Oberlin are buried in Stanwood Cemetery outside Massillon) and traveling in the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Beverly, his wife of 70 years; his brother Jack and his wife Jean Oberlin of Mansfield; his niece Judith Burke and nephew Jack Jr. He is survived by his daughter Tracy (Richard) Wilder of Jackson Twp.;his granddaughter Amy (Michael) Grinstead and his great grandson Benjamin Grinstead of Grove City, OH.; nieces, Julie (David) Murphy, Jayne Baker and nephew, Jim (Libby) Oberlin. The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to all the caregivers of Home Instead, Massillon. Although there were many, we would like to acknowledge a few who cared for him the longest: Amy, Erin, Susan, David, Lacey and Stephanie. Both of my parents wishes were to be able to stay in their home and with the support of many well trained caregivers since October of 2020, it was achieved. As per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or memorial service. A private family inurnment will be in the West family plot at Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other professional service. In some cases, the deceased person may have written their own obituary in advance.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise, around 150-200 words. This allows for a brief summary of the person's life without overwhelming readers with too much information.

What information should I include in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also want to include information about funeral or memorial services, burial arrangements, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help bring the person to life and make the notice more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others may require email or phone submissions.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to take control of how they're remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

Is it appropriate to include humorous anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including lighthearted stories or humorous anecdotes can help capture the person's personality and spirit, making the obituary more engaging and memorable.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the person's life or death that you're unsure about sharing publicly, consider consulting with family members or close friends before including them in the obituary.

Can I include information about memorial donations in an obituary?

What is the role of an obituary in the grieving process?

An obituary serves as a way to acknowledge and process grief, providing a sense of closure and allowing loved ones to begin healing. It also provides a permanent record of the person's life and legacy.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes! Even if someone has been deceased for many years, writing an obituary can still be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

How do I find archived obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites, which often maintain extensive collections of historical obituaries. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived materials.

What is the significance of publishing an obituary online?

Publishing an obituary online makes it easily accessible to a wider audience, including those who may not have access to local newspapers. It also allows for easier sharing and preservation of the notice.

Can I republish an existing obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes! If you want to republish an existing obituary on a special anniversary or occasion, check with the original publication or online platform for their policies on re-publishing.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

Diligently fact-check dates, names, and other details before submitting the obituary. It's also helpful to have multiple people review the notice for accuracy before publication.

What is the etiquette for responding to condolences expressed through an online guestbook?

Acknowledge each message individually whenever possible, expressing gratitude for the condolences and support. You may also want to consider sending personalized responses or thank-you notes.

Sometimes! Check with the publication or online platform beforehand to see if they allow external links or social media handles in their notices.

How do I preserve an online obituary for future generations?

Maintain printed copies of the notice or save digital versions in multiple locations (e.g., cloud storage or external hard drives) to ensure its preservation over time.
