Ruth Rhoda Clark - November 22, 1950 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Fort Mill)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Rhoda Clark was born to Ervin and Inez Rhoda on November 22, 1950 on a potato farm in Hodgdon, Maine.  She continued their legacy of strong faith and dedicated service to others throughout her life. Many missionaries stayed in the Rhoda home over the years, and at the age of nine, Ruth remembered standing in one of the family potato fields thinking she would like to be a missionary, teacher, or nurse.  After graduating from Eastern Christian High School, she attended Covenant College and received her nursing degree from Columbia University in New York. She went on a short term mission trip to Liberia, making her 9-year-old self's dream a reality. On return, she was asked to share her experiences with a young handsome man, Brian Clark, who was preparing to go on a short-term mission trip to the exact same place Ruth had been. They corresponded throughout Brian's mission trip, fell in love, and were married on June 19, 1976—just 8 months after he returned to the U.S. They went straight from their honeymoon to SIM's missionary candidate school and then returned to Liberia together. Ruth worked as a prenatal nurse, offering medical care and sharing the gospel at ELWA hospital and in the surrounding area villages. Their daughters, Joy and Karen, were born in Liberia.
Fourteen years later, when war prevented them from returning to Liberia after home assignment, they moved to Ethiopia, where Ruth showed her flexibility and intelligence by taking on a variety of roles from computer teacher to accounting assistant. Together, she and Brian began leading a discipleship group for young adults in Addis Ababa. Many of the members of the group still consider them surrogate parents. Ruth was often found deep in conversation with young ladies from the discipleship group or other missionary women. All of them gravitated toward her listening ear and loving heart. Ruth's gift for counseling was so clear to all around them that eventually SIM asked her to officially take on the role of women's counselor. It was in this role as counselor that Ruth set off toward a village in Southern Ethiopia in July of 1996. Unfortunately, she never reached the village, stopped by the car accident that would leave her paralyzed for almost 26 years. Ruth didn't let her accident stop her from loving people and ministering to them. Many found her more approachable in her wheelchair, and she would say that she didn't "have to" be in a wheelchair, but she "got to." Her attitude was a true inspiration. With Brian's help, she gained enough independence to drive a hand-controlled van and joined SIM's U.S. member care team, where she served until 2018.  Even as breathing became more and more of a challenge (her lung had been punctured in the accident, and scar tissue led to COPD), she still reached out by phone to many and in-person to her friends, family, and home-health aides. She made everyone she encountered feel seen and understood, and was an expert at being family to those who didn't have any.  Ruth collected stuffed lambs as a reminder of the Lord's watch-care over her, and she met her Shepherd in person on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022. She is now enjoying a heavenly reunion with her parents, her brothers John and Herb, her niece Lori, and the baby miscarried in her second pregnancy. She is survived by husband Brian, daughters Joy and Karen, 5 grandchildren, brother Jim, foster-sister Lois, and many who see her as the mother or sister of their heart. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, April 25 at Hope Fellowship Church, 95 Bird St., Rock Hill, SC at 6:30 p.m. with an opportunity for family and friends to fellowship afterwards. A family graveside service will be on Tuesday, April 26 at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens, 700 Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill, SC at 10:30 a.m. Both events will be live streamed at the links below: Link for Celebration of Life Service: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo1GoRmW2G5fovQh-fa04nQ Link for family graveside service: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY-Zj-726I6y55qQGRN2A1w

Obituary Preview: Nancy Lee Blackwell Peet, master of puns, poet, loving Wife, Mother, and Grandmother, died on April 7, 2022, at age 69. Nancy was born in Dayton Ohio, on February 9th, 1953, the second of three children to the late Frank and Virginia Blackwell.
As the daughter of an Air Force Colonel, she moved to Evreux, France, and then to California, before settling back in Dayton in 1963.  Nancy excelled in school and was rewarded for her hard work with admission to the National Honor Society.  In 1971 she graduated from high school, said goodbye to Dayton, and began her own life journey, a journey that would take her to Pennsylvania, Sicily, New York, Texas, and North Carolina.
Nancy attended college to study English at Lock Haven University. It was there where she met her future husband, and made many lifelong friends. She married Steve Peet in 1978, in a beautiful self written ceremony in Painted Post, NY. They lived for a time in central Pennsylvania and southern New York before moving to Texas in 1982, where they had a son, Byron Peet, in August 1983. They eventually made their way to Charlotte, NC in 1992, and there they remained.
She cherished her family above all else, and believed it her most important duty to provide unconditional love to her family, and any friends lucky enough to get to know her. Please know this…  if she ever told you that she loved you, she meant it!  She held too many titles in this life to list here in full. Among them are wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, poet, vivid dreamer and musician. Regardless of relation, Nancy made a positive impact on everyone privileged to get to know her. Nancy loved children, and spent many years as a daycare teacher, before completing her career at Sanger Pediatrics. However, her proudest achievement was raising her son, Byron.
Nancy now joins her sister Susan, her beloved grandma Farley, and her mother and father, in heaven.  Nancy was happiest when she was in the arms of her “sweetie”, Steve, and when her child and then grandchildren were treating her as a jungle gym.  Nancy loved to laugh, and loved good jokes and stories. The family will host a celebration of life on Saturday, April 23rd, at 2:00 PM EST at Palmetto Funeral Home at 2049 Carolina Place Dr. Nancy loved children and hated Cancer, it is her wish that instead of flowers, that you donate to St Judes Children's Hospital in her name at this link http://giftfunds.stjude.org/Nancy_Peet
In the meantime, her husband, Steve, asks that you tell a joke, spin a horrible pun, and give someone you love a hug and a kiss from her.

Sharon Ann Powers - July 21, 1947 - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Fort Mill)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Ann Powers, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the young age of 74 on the morning of April 3rd 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Eugene, Oregon to Edward John Voss and Viola Selma Voss. Sharon grew up in Eagle Rock, California and was the youngest of three daughters. In July 1969, she met the love of her life, Billy Ray Powers. In a whirlwind romance, the lovebirds each knew they found “the one” and were married on January 9th 1970. While living and raising their three children in California, they enjoyed being outdoors, spontaneous drives all up and down the west coast, fishing at the lake, and camping under the stars. The family moved to the Carolinas in 1984 to be part of the PTL Christian ministry.
Mom was a woman of God and devoted Christian, her fierce faith in the Lord was unwavering and she had a heart full of hope in all things. Mom and Dad prayed together daily and was a cherished member of the church, where she was always present to serve in any way, helped coordinate events and was always the last one to leave and lock up the doors. Mom loved Jesus, and followed His example her whole life and was a pillar of strength to many. Mom was a lighthouse of hope to everyone as she gently illuminated God’s promises with words of encouragement and compassion. Those who knew and loved our mom could easily describe her as a lover of life, witty, compassionate, and caring. Mom had the spirit, heart, and will of her favorite bird, the hummingbird and was mesmerizing in the way she moved with determination, ease, and grace through any obstacle she faced. Anything mom put her mind too got accomplished as she was resourceful and very creative. Mom was always full of energy and could always make a rainy day fun. Her positive outlook of life gave her the ability to always find the silver lining in all situations and raise your spirits and hopes. Mom loved music and was especially fond of when her Groom sang sweetly to her. She had many passions and was exceptional at all of them but being a master painter was her true God given talent. Mom expressed her love for nature, seascapes and her beloved Jesus Christ through her remarkable ability of mixing colors and putting her brush to the canvas. Her family cherishes the art she created more than gold.
Mom was also an accomplished baker and an expert in cake decorating. She had an eye for interior decorating and crafting glorious floral arrangements and created magnificent masterpieces of all kinds that reflected the beautiful life she lived. Mom joy and zest for life magnified as her family grew. She cherished being with her beloved grand-babies and taking them on adventures. The family has so many wonderful memories of trips to the beach to pick the shore line for the best sea shells, apple picking in the fall and camping in the Blue Ridge mountains, roasting marshmallows around the blazing camp fire. Mom loved togetherness and celebrating holidays, birthdays or any reason to gather and delighted in cooking for her whole family. Mom brought smiles and joy to everyone around her and she is loved very much. In her final days, mom was surrounded by those who love her to their core.  Her lifelong sweetheart, who affectionately calls her Momma, sang to her with a love so tender and called on Jesus to carry her home with peace. His songs and prayers over her were medicine to her heart to ease her pain and bring calmness to her passionate soul. Mom went to heaven knowing she is deeply loved and cherished by her family.
Momma is survived by her loving husband, Bill Powers, and her adoring children Drew Voss, Deana Kendadi, Darla Godwin, Aaron Powers, son-in-laws Tim Godwin and Tauofik Kendadi, daughter in laws Kelli Voss and Kim Powers. Grandma to grandsons Austin Voss, Christian Godwin, and Kaeden Kendadi,  and granddaughters Amanda Voss, Celeste Godwin, Taylor Powers, and Annabelle Fletcher. Great Grandma to great-grandson Sebastian Fletcher, Dorian Ramsey, and great-granddaughter Atlas Fletcher.
The family would like to especially like to thank the incredible team of nurses and doctors at Atrium Health in Pineville, NC for their compassionate care of Mom in her final days. A graveside funeral service will be held at Bass-Cauthen Funeral and Cemetery Home for Sharon’s immediate family on Friday April 8th 2022 at 11am. James Hudson Mankin - January 28, 2003 - March 30, 2022

Departed: 03/30/2022 (Fort Mill)
Obituary Preview: James Hudson “Hud” Mankin, hit his final home run at the age of 19, rounded third base and slid safely into home Wednesday, March 30th.  There to greet him crossing home plate were Mamalou and Papa-H, Nana Ann, Nana Pat, Doc, and Kelly - undoubtedly surprised he did not get to reach the bottom of the ninth inning of life. NAFO #19 is now forever 19 and forever loved.
Born in Pineville, NC  and raised in Fort Mill, SC, Hud loved his family and friends, one of his favorite places to be was home amongst family and friends laughing and joking it up as he often did. Hud was a gifted athlete: whether it was axe-throwing, mountain-biking or playing ball, he was a natural and put in many hours of practice and hard work over the years. While Hud was an avid snowboarder, his most notable sport was baseball. Hud played school, recreation and travel ball for 11 years where he was known for dominating from the mound as a leftie with a powerful arm. Hud is a 2021 graduate of Nation Ford High School and he worked at Autobell next to Carowinds where he earned the “Employee of a Lifetime” award for always showing up cheerfully and offering a “top of the morning” to his co-workers.
Hudson is the "One of a kind" son of Karen Paris and Jason Mankin, best friend (“bubby”) and brother to Madelyn Mankin, and is survived by grandparents Jim and Brenda Israel, Aunt Kim Peatross, Uncle David and Roberta Mankin, cousins Allen Marion, Mike Smarro, Jack and Henley Peatross, Hannah Parker, Jake Mankin and a loyal “village” of friends.  Extended cherished families include Steele Creek Athletic Association, Carolina’s Baseball Center, Nations Ford High School, Carolina Impact baseball families, and of course, his fabulous Autobell family.
Hud has touched so many lives and even in death his ripple will continue to positively impact others. Hud will be remembered for his kind heart, quirky-nature, quick wit and loving soul, and perhaps his love of gaming (PS4, anyone?) and for reaching Level 35 on Pokémon Go.  He had a pretty filthy curveball as well! And, his final gift to his beautiful and loving little sister was finding the spare key to the car they shared that had been lost for months.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Hud’s amazing life at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 9th at the Horse Trial Barn at the Anne Springs Greenway 195 Adventure Road, Fort Mill, SC 29715.
Dress casually - we welcome baseball jerseys, Pokémon, Hello Kitty, Power Ranger T-shirts or anything that reminds you of Hud. If possible, please come with a picture, memory or story about Hudson that will be shared with his family in a keepsake box.

Stephanie Leicht - October 13, 1942 - March 25, 2022

Departed: 03/25/2022 (Fort Mill)
Obituary Preview: Stephanie Leicht, 79, of Charlotte, NC shuffled off this mortal coil on March 25, 2022 due to natural causes. She was an adventurous, unorthodox, independent, and fierce soul, and passed away, as she had also lived, in her usual stubborn and unapologetic fashion.
Stephanie was born in St. Louis Missouri to Alfred and Violet Leicht on October 13, 1942 and while an only child, “Stevie” grew up surrounded by many cousins, aunts and uncles - her mother being one of 10 children. She blazed her own trail from the get-go excelling in academics, choir and ballet and after graduation from Cleveland High School, there was no stopping the petite 5’2” ball of energy from her from being the first in her family to head to college.
In 1961, Stephanie attended University of Missouri Rolla where, she joined the Society of Women Engineers, served as president of the first women’s dormitory at Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and even found time to cheer in addition to her studies. She graduated in 1965 from University of Missouri at Rolla with a BS in Applied Mathematics.
After graduation she entered the professional workforce in software development programming on punch cards, and working with computers that filled large rooms (sometimes with her tiny kid in tow). Later she applied her computer science and technical analysis knowledge in the satellite engineering and banking industries.
Being one of the original “Women in technology”, she firmly believed in equality and actively supported the Equal Rights Amendment to help pave the way for the next generation girls behind her to be whatever they wanted to be. She was very comfortable in her own skin and was never one looking to win popularity contests, her tight moral compass drove her forward.
Stephanie was also passionate about the arts, reading and cooking. She taught herself to cook various foreign cuisines which started out of necessity and remarked that her mother couldn’t cook and could burn water.  She was a talented seamstress sewing dresses for her daughter when she was a toddler and designed patterns and made several prom and homecoming dresses. If you could dream it, she could make it happen. Stephanie also learned how to work with stained glass, and later settled into pottery and loved to sculpt. When not working, or crafting, she enjoyed traveling in the US and abroad. She made the most of the DC art museums and cultural scenes and frequented ballets and Broadway shows. For anyone who spent any time with her, knew there wasn’t a classic show tune that she didn’t know the words to, and that "Life is too short to eat sh*tty food", and to "turn left... no, my other left".
Her friends enjoyed her quick wit and intelligent conversation and she was quick to help anyone, or any animal, in need. No doubt, Stephanie has been greeted eagerly by several mutts, a Boxer, 2 Basset Hounds, 2 ducks and many cats. She was a lifelong animal rescue supporter and known to stop along roads to pick up lost cats and dogs to get them to safety - and for the ones not claimed, on more than one occasion, they got to join the family.
Stephanie is survived her two favorite children, Robin Steward and Mark Kettelkamp (side note: there are only two of us) from Virginia, two grandchildren Haley and Hunter Steward from Virginia, and her beloved cat Oliver who is currently at the Humane Society of York County. Both Robin and Mark wanted dear Oliver as they inherited “animal lover” gene from their mom; Robin was prevented by her defective asthmatic lungs and Mark was already at max cat capacity and was unable to take on “just one more”.
Robin would like to thank Willie Kunkel for his extreme kindness and companionship and unwavering support for Stephanie; Christine Goldsmith and Anna Miller of Merrill Lynch who consistently continue to go above and beyond; and Providence Care Hospice (shout out to Kerrie!) who provided expert care and showed extreme compassion. It took a village to manage and care for Stephanie especially in her later days, who was still as sharp and as much of herself as she was in her youth. Stephanie specified a few things at her passing, and a service wasn’t one of them. However, she did ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Humane Society of York County (HSYC) at https://humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org/donate/donate.html. Oliver and his shelter friends would be thankful and mom would be happy
