Departed: 02/04/2017 (Charleston)
Obituary Preview: Angus Stuart Smith, Jr., 96, of Johns Island, SC, and widower of Minnie Pace Smith, who passed away January 22, 2014, entered into eternal rest on February 4, 2017.
He was born December 22, 1920 in Charleston, SC, to the late Angus Stuart Smith and Frances Gunn Smith.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Murray Vocational High School and honorably served his county in the US Navy during WWII. He retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard after 26 years. He was a lifetime member of Orange Masonic Lodge and an avid ham radio operator. Mr. Smith was an eternal optimist who truly enjoyed life and always provided for his family. He was an animal enthusiast from the time he was young - catching pigeons at night from the top of the Custom’s House, raising and racing homing pigeons, keeping African pygmy goats and many species of birds (ducks, geese, pheasants and chickens), ponies and horses. At one time, he even had a pet raccoon. His family will lovingly remember him for his sense of humor and his numerous all-consuming hobbies.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son, Angus S. Smith III; his sisters, Frances Fike and Dot Fabian and his brother, Clyatt Smith.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” P. Smith, DVM and her husband Wayne N. Rhea of Wadmalaw Island, SC; and his sons, Richard “Rick” L. Smith and Wayne S. Smith of Johns Island, SC.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Michelle Childs, who cared for both Mr. and Mrs. Smith over the last five and a half years. Her devotion and care made it possible for them to spend their remaining years comfortably in their own home.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
A graveside memorial service with interment is being planned for March 15, 2017, which would have been Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s 70th wedding anniversary.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Palmetto Cremation Society, Charleston, SC.

Gloria Gearhart - October 26, 1944 - February 03, 2017

Departed: 02/03/2017 (Charleston)
Obituary Preview: Gloria Davis Gearhart (Oma), 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 3rd.
Gloria was full of life and love and fought a short battle with cancer that ended quickly and without pain. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, John Gearhart; daughter, Tanya Nelson Gurrieri and son-in-law, Rich; son, Benny Nelson; grandchildren, Hannah, Logan, Gracen & Keleigh Legare Nelson, Isabella & Bennett Gurrieri; and her "pick up" family, James, Judy, Reina, Arthur & Mathew Daugomah; brothers, Bobby Davis and Jimmy Davis; and a sister, Delores Davis; step-children, Brett, Beth & Sean (Kim) Gearhart.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Kelly; her parents; and brother, Philip.
She leaves behind many friends and extended family members whom she loved dearly. Gloria's zest for life and spirited nature are how she will be remembered. She lived life fully and had no regrets. Her work at Phillips shoes for almost 20 years kept her going and in touch with the community of people she loved. Gloria's fire and spirit taught us all to fiercely protect and take care of the ones you love, tell it like it is, take no bull and to always be strong. She grew up outside of Charlotte with a childhood most of us couldn't imagine, but found mentors in school and elsewhere to give her a foundation of love that she would then pass on to her family. She'd say to us all, "Don't worry about me, quit that crying and get back to work".

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help to notify people of funeral or memorial service arrangements and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer may gather information from family members, friends, and other sources to create a comprehensive and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary may be suitable for an online platform, while a shorter one may be more appropriate for a newspaper.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. They may have specific guidelines for content, length, and formatting. Be prepared to provide detailed information about the deceased and payment for the publication fee.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers typically charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer package deals or flat fees. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary without printing it in a newspaper. These platforms often offer additional features such as guest books, condolences, and memorial pages.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers typically publish obituaries within a few days of submission, while online platforms may publish immediately or within 24 hours.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication, but this depends on the publication or platform's policies. Be sure to check with them before submitting any changes.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of death, and funeral service details. It is often used when a full obituary cannot be published due to time constraints or other limitations.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's passing and providing biographical information, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their life story is told accurately. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and storytelling.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain archives of past issues. Many genealogy websites and online databases also offer access to historical obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an old obituary. Be sure to check copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before doing so.

What is an online memorial page?

An online memorial page is a virtual space where friends and family can share memories, condolences, and stories about the deceased. It often includes photos, videos, and other multimedia elements.

How do I create an online memorial page?

You can create an online memorial page through various websites and platforms that offer this service. Some popular options include Legacy.com, Tributes.com, and Memorials.com.

This depends on the platform or website where you're publishing the obituary. Some allow links or attachments, while others may not. Check with the platform's guidelines before submitting your content.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration varies depending on the platform or website. Some keep online obituaries available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., one year).

Can I request corrections or removal of an online obituary?

If you find errors in an online obituary or wish to have it removed for any reason, contact the platform or website directly with your request. They will guide you through their process for making corrections or removing content.

Are there any specific regulations around writing an obituary?

No federal regulations govern what can be included in an obituary. However, some states or publications may have specific guidelines or restrictions regarding content.

Can I use humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's life and personality in an obituary. Just be sure to consider your audience and avoid offending anyone who may read it.

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

If you're struggling with what information to include in an obituary, consider consulting with family members, friends, or a professional writer for guidance. They can help you craft a meaningful tribute that honors your loved one's life.

Is there a standard format for writing an obituary?

No standardized format exists for writing an obituary. However, most follow a general structure that includes essential information such as name, age, date of birth and death, occupation, education, etc.
