She was born March 16th, 1932, youngest of seven siblings. Four brothers and three sisters in Bay City, Michigan, the daughter of Fredrick and Marie Siegrist.Marie graduated with honors from Bay City High School Class of 1950. She moved from Bay City to Lansing, Michigan, and began her career working in the Treasury Department at the State Capital. Marie Charlotte Siegrist married Eugene Donald Case on April 15th, 1961, they settled in Lansing Michigan, and were married for 60 years. Marie raised four children and went back to work for the State of Michigan as an administrative assistant for 24 years. Marie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.Marie was loving, kind, and always had a listening ear that would sometimes lead to sharing perspectives that helped others heal. She often found ways to connect with family and friends, welcoming them all into her home. She was passionate about hugs, family gatherings, playing cards and board games, enjoyed puzzles, and with Christmas being her favorite holiday always had her home open for Christmas gatherings. She enjoyed volunteering at St Vincent shortly after retiring from the State of Michigan.In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Eugene Case, brothers, Eugene, Edward, Robert, Fred, sisters, Betty, Marion, and Thelma. Gregory of 49 years, her parents and brother, Bobby Kidder. Bev became a mother in August, 1961 when she had Jerry Jr. (Jay). Bev leaves behind her sons, Jay (Karen) Struble and Mike Gregory; sister, Corky (Mike) Whittum; brother, Cliff (Peggy) Kidder; sister-in-law, Elaine Black; nieces and nephews, special great-niece, Camille, special great-nephew, Tony, Jr; grandkids, great-grandkids, and many friends.Beverly was a wonderful mother, auntie, sister, wife and mema who was always there when we needed her. Bev was the kindest soul and graced our presence here on earth. She was so kind to everyone she came into contact with. She loved all of her family unconditionally. Bev worked for the State of Michigan, Lottery division.In August, 1974 Bev married her soulmate, Leonard Gregory. They had the best life together for nearly 50 years. They loved their family and friends, and they loved to travel and spend time with her family. His commitment to the well-being of the school environment was evident in the meticulous care he took in his duties and the extra efforts he made to ensure a safe and clean space for learning. What truly set Carlos apart was his selfless manner in which he shared his knowledge and time. Whether lending a listening ear or offering a helping hand, he was always there for those in need, making him a cherished figure within the community. For many years he volunteered at Gardner Middle School and Everett High School where he quickly became known as "Grandpa" to many of the students who attended there with his grandsons. Carlos's life was a testament to the power of love and profound influence one person can have on the lives of many. Sexton High School where he played football as a Defensive End and Tackle, Denny furthered his education at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. His dedication to his country was evident when he joined the United States Army, serving with distinction during the Vietnam War. For his bravery and sacrifices, he was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart, honors that spoke to his courage and dedication.After his military service, Denny joined the United States Postal Service as a Letter Carrier until his retirement. Denny’s passion for music, literature and historical research led him to a lifelong interest in the promise and possibilities of computer technology. His love of music shined in his ability to play guitar and sing in his beautifully deep rich baritone voice. Denny’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of sixteen years, Bari (Wood) Kazee, who he met in an online literary chatroom. He is also survived by his caring sister, Polly Burchfield; his nephews, Paul (Siu) Kazee, Mark Burchfield, and Jeffrey Burchfield; and his nieces, Gale Burchfield, Cindy Burchfield, Gail Sutton, Mary Vanciu, and Jill Kazee. Denny was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Paul (Arlene) Kazee, and his brother-in-law Jeffrey Burchfield.In following Dennis’s wishes there will be no services. He will be buried in East Lawn Memory Garden beside his family.

His love of music shined in his ability to play guitar and sing in his beautifully deep rich baritone voice.

Denny’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of sixteen years, Bari (Wood) Kazee, who he met in an online literary chatroom. He is also survived by his caring sister, Polly Burchfield; his nephews, Paul (Siu) Kazee, Mark Burchfield, and Jeffrey Burchfield; and his nieces, Gale Burchfield, Cindy Burchfield, Gail Sutton, Mary Vanciu, and Jill Kazee. Denny was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Paul (Arlene) Kazee, and his brother-in-law Jeffrey Burchfield.

In following Dennis’s wishes there will be no services. He will be buried in East Lawn Memory Garden beside his family.

She spent years providing loving childcare to dozens and dozens of children.

She is survived by her 5 children: Scott (Lisa) Hufnagel, Carmen Hufnagel, Brenda (Michael Gross) Hufnagel, Todd (Deborah) Hufnagel, and Tracy (Jason) Rawlings. Ruth’s 7 grandchildren: Abigail (Nolan) Pung, Adam, Ethan, Parker, Marissa Hufnagel, Jordan and Jaiden Rawlings, all of whom she adored and cherished deeply.

Among her 14 siblings, which she was affectionately referred to as “my baby sister Ruthie”, she is survived by her 4 sisters Donna Kuripla, Thelma Miller, Helen Zezza, and Dorothy Witt, and her 2 brothers, James VanElls, and Michael (Peggy) VanElls, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her 4 sisters, Arlene Walling, Alice Gallagher, Josephine Rogers, and Rita Thelen, and her 4 brothers, Dale Patrick, William, Lawrence Thomas, and Richard VanElls.

Ruth's life was filled with simple pleasures; she had a love for the warmth of the sunshine and the gentle sway of her front porch swing. Her neighbors often found her tending to her flowers or sharing a laugh. She was a master of the card table and an enthusiastic bingo player. Ruth loved to bake. Her home was always filled with the sweet aroma of her latest creation and the sound of laughter.

Those who knew Ruth always enjoyed her funny quick-witted remarks and thoughtful gestures. Her presence was a comfort, and her sense of humor was a source of endless delight. Ruth's legacy is one of love and laughter, of baked goods shared, and card games played.

As the sun sets on Ruthie’s life, we remember a woman who was a portrait of joyfulness. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as her love shaped the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Ruth's family takes solace in knowing that she lived a full and beautiful life, surrounded by those she loved and who loved her in return. Her spirit, as vibrant and nurturing as the gardens she tended, will forever bloom in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who knew her.

As we bid farewell to Ruth, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey marked by countless acts of kindness, and a legacy of love that will continue to grow in the lives of those she touched. She will be dearly missed, but her light will never fade.

Bettie was born in the U.P. of Michigan on July 2, 1939, the daughter of the late John and Elsie (Corgan) Grace. She was proud of the fact that her first job was with the Registrar’s Office of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Bettie returned to the U.P. where she met, fell in love, and married her husband, Irwin “Mort” Jaehnig, in 1965. She stayed home when she and Mort started their family. When their children became older, Bettie started working for the State of Michigan and retired while with Licensing and Regulation, after 25 years of service. She was a devoted member of St. Mary Cathedral, Lansing, where she became an active member of Right to Life and St. Vincent DePaul Society, as well as Habitat for Humanity. Although she lived in the Lansing area for a majority of her adult life, she always thought of the U.P. of Michigan as her home! Bettie loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener. Most of all, she loved her family and was especially devoted to supporting all her grandchildren during their activities.

Bettie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mort, in 2009. Surviving are her children; daughter, Xan (Steve) Swailes; sons, Frank (Suzanne), John (Kim) and Jim (Amy); grandchildren, Olivia, Jacob (Liz), Andrew, Sophia, Emma, Liza, Isaiah Swailes, Kinleigh (Jared) Sayers, Matthew (Shauna), Mara, and Benjamin Jaehnig; great grandchildren, Riley and Isla Swailes; Max Jaehnig, and Emma Sayers.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, L’Anse, MI, with Rev. Fr. Jins Joseph as celebrant. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, L’Anse in the spring. Carolyn's legacy is lovingly carried on by her children, Michele (Pete) Riojas, Patrick (Marti) Herman, Chris Herman, and Suzanne "Suzi" (Bill) Stephens. Her sister Theresa Smoger, her cherished grandchildren Andrea, Peter (Nicole), Megan, and Michael, and a host of extended family members will continue to honor her memory by living out the values she instilled in them.

Her sisters Frances, Margarete, Lillian, and Mary, who shared in the tapestry of her life, have welcomed her into eternal rest. Carolyn's familial bonds were a source of strength and joy, and the memories created with her siblings will remain a comforting treasure for all who knew her.

Carolyn’s passion for life was matched by her advocacy for breast cancer research, as a survivor. She worked in retail for decades and was well known all over the area and she loved traveling all over the country and beyond. On top of this, she was easily the Scrabble Queen.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved spending time in the kitchen, sharing her love of food with everyone. She also loved to bake and was well known for her cookies and cakes. Angie was very proud of her heritage and through her talents as a seamstress handmade many beautiful costumes and ballet folklorico dress for many children over the years. She dedicated countless hours volunteering for her community through various organizations including Cristo Rey Catholic Church and the Bread house. Through the combination of her passion for the culinary arts and her heart for servitude she helped feed her community.

She was proceeded in death by her parents Catarino and Valentina Perez, nephew David “DJ ”Martinez Jr. and daughter Tammy Gonzales, ten brothers and sisters and many brothers and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her husband, Arthuro Gonzales; siblings, Nena Garcia, Alicia (David) Martinez, Arturo (Scott Delongchamp) Perez, Alex Perez, Nora (Eddie) Garcia, and many brothers and sisters-in-law; her children, Fenis (Daniel) Soza, Manuel (Christi) Lopez, Joe Garza, Arturo H Gonzales Jr., and Emily M Gonzales; grandchildren, Sergio Ibanez, Tonatzin Soza, Arturo Gonzles III, Ilian Gonzles, Doninic C. Rev. Fr. William R Lugger - April 09, 1952 - January 26, 2024

Obituary Preview: Fr. William (Bill) Lugger, at the age of 71, died on January 26, 2024 as a result of complications from a very rare autoimmune disease called Goodpasture Syndrome. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 9, 1952. Raised in the city of Flint. He attended Selby, Holmes and Flint Northwestern High School graduating in 1970. Moved to Flushing in 1973 and joined St. Robert Catholic Church. He worked BINGO, was a lector, a religious Ed Teacher, and joined the choir. It was through all of these relationships and the friendship of two newly ordained priests who came to the parish as their first assignment that the call to the priesthood came to him. A student said to him, “Mr. Lugger, you should be a priest”. “I prayed and prayed to listen of God’s voice. I returned to school and graduated from St. Thomas University in 1984 with a degree in education and liturgy. I attended St. John Provincial Seminary and Sacred Heart Seminary. I was ordained a deacon on December 8, 1988 by Edmund Cardinal Szoka. I was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lansing on June 10th 1989 by Bishop Kenneth Povish.” Fr. Bill’s first assignment was Associate Pastor at St. Casimir Parish in Lansing from 1989 to 1991. Served as pastor of St. Michael Parish in Flint from 1991 to 1997. He then moved back to St. Casimir Parish and served as Pastor from 1997 until his retirement in 2019. Served as president of the Liturgical Commission for 11 years. Upon his retirement he moved into a small house next to St. Casimir Church with his dog Hezekiah (Hezzie). One year of relatively good health when he was struck down by that horrible disease. After one month in the hospital, he moved into St. Mary Cathedral Parish where he was welcomed and loved by the people of the parish.

Fr. Lugger is preceded in death by Kathleen Anne Heric, J. Kelly Lugger, and Raymond C. Allen (stepfather). He is survived by my three sisters, Barbara Heric, Mary Elizabeth Behme and Patricia Anne Lugger, two step-sisters Carol (Bill) Yakovich and Susan Allen, two nephews Stephen and Brandon, two nieces Stephanie, Shannon and one great nephew Aiden, Aunt Dora Mae Heric, terrific cousins of the Thomas, Kellerman, Heric, Henige, Allen and Lugger families along with countless friends.

He is survived by his five daughters, Christine Meyer-Degnan (Monica DelCastillo) living in Florida and Michigan, Theresa DeSalvo (Matthew) in Connecticut, Michelle Sparrow in California, Kathleen Sparrow (Michael Shader) in Maryland and Suzanne Sparrow (Dawn Hendricks) in Virginia; his longtime partner Zarema Kumakhova of Lansing; eight grandchildren Christopher Meyer; Katie Eyde; Corey, Michael, Nicholas and Timothy DeSalvo; Chloe and Casey Shader; six great-grandchildren; and Virginia Sparrow, his first wife and mother of his five daughters.

Al was born February 7, 1933 to Albert and Vera Sparrow of Catonsville, MD. Al was educated at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1955. He then earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Georgetown University in 1959. While in med school, he married Virginia Devereux and together they had five daughters. Al began his medical career while also serving for three years as a U.S. Air Force Captain and flight surgeon. He did his residency in Pediatrics at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington D.C., and then completed his fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Children’s Hospital in Boston. He later joined the faculty at the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, VA. In 1972, he moved to East Lansing to join the faculty of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (CHM) as Professor of Cardiology where he remained until his retirement in 2011. While on sabbatical from the University in 1978-79, Al earned a Master’s degree in Epidemiology at the School of Public Health at Harvard University.

While at Michigan State, Al specialized in Pediatric and Preventive Cardiology, serving the community at Sparrow Hospital and Ingham Medical, as well as teaching MSU medical students. While teaching was his first love, he was also an avid promoter of new medical technologies and collaborated with the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine on pioneering techniques in cardiology. He later served as the Chairman of Pediatrics and Human Development from 1992-2001. During his remarkable career, he was involved with many professional organizations including the American Heart Association, Michigan Heart Association and the American Board of Pediatrics.

Al was an active member of the MSU community and greatly enjoyed swimming, boating and lake life on Lake Lansing in Haslett. He was an avid fan of the Michigan State football, basketball, hockey and lacrosse teams and enjoyed attending productions at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts and the Lansing Symphony Orchestra.

Al can best be remembered for his great love of life and his passion for travel, skiing, sailing, photography, music, theater, eating seafood and drinking wine, all of which he shared with his five daughters. Al and his family spent many wonderful vacations on the beaches of Lake Michigan as well as on the East Coast and in the Caribbean, where they could sit down for five hours eating Chesapeake Bay crabs. He was well known for taking his girls on ski trips out West, which was always combined with professional development meetings before and after skiing. In his final six years, Al lived at Burcham Hills where the dedicated and caring staff took excellent care of him.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Charles (Virgia), Lillian (Edgar) Harrington, Joseph, Henry (Marie), Bertha (Hank) Stump, and Monica (Jim) Zimmerman.

Ray's early education took place in McBain, Michigan, where he attended high school while working on the family farm. He then enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served during the Korean War.

Upon his return home, Ray found his calling as a barber. He spent his working years at Ace Barber Shop in Haslett, where he was not just a barber but a listening ear and gentle spirit to visit with. Even after retirement, he continued to volunteer his time and talents to those he could. He will be remembered for his hospitable and funny character, along with his apple peeling skills.

Ray will be remembered as a gentle soul, whose faith-filled and hardworking nature was evident in everything he did. He spent many years attending services at Haslett Community Church and then Bath United Methodist Church.

Ray's love for the outdoors was profound; he spent countless hours hunting and fishing, going for walks, and simply enjoying the beauty of nature.

Above all, Ray's love for his family was boundless. He treasured the moments spent with his loved ones and regarded them as his greatest accomplishment and joy.

He lived the last 50 years in Michigan.

He graduated from Waterford Mott High School, received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan, a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Oakland University, and a law degree from Wayne State University.

Mr. Kerwin practiced law for several decades. He also worked as a software engineer for IBM.

Mr. Kerwin was predeceased by his mother, Marguerite B. (Peggy) Kerwin. He is survived by his father and stepmother, John and Barbara Kerwin of University Park, FL; a son, Christopher Kerwin of Grand Blanc, MI; a daughter, Julia Kerwin, M.D., of Shelby Township, MI; a stepson, Michael Dowsett of Mount Morris MI; a sister, Jacquelynn Kerwin, of Union City, NJ; a brother and sister-in-law, Kevin Kerwin and Rebecca Hogarth of South Lyon, MI, and a nephew, Preston Kerwin-Battaglia of Union City, NJ.

Obituary Preview: Magnetic. Joyful. Kind. Funny. Welcoming. Loud. Those were but a handful of the words that embodied the man Alonzo was. On Saturday January 13, 2024 at the age of 86, God called Alonzo home “well done good and faithful servant” Matthew 25:23.

Alonzo was born in San Benito, Texas in February of 1937 to Jesus and Modesta Perez, who engrained in their 10th child a relentless work ethic and a love for family. He was the child of a migrant family who traveled from the valley of Texas, to farms across the state of Michigan. He shared that in those early years, as a young boy, his job was to bring ladles of water to his parents and siblings in the fields before falling asleep on a mattress made of hay. He did not have a formal education, but through lived experiences he learned everything he needed. He was a man of many trades using not only his hands, but also the relationships he fostered to establish a network of opportunities. Today they’d refer to him as an elaborate entrepreneur; from pouring cement, tending cattle, laying sod, to transporting and selling watermelons, he was always “wheeling and dealing on a job site”.

Alonzo was a loving father and is survived by 9 adoring children. Eduardo Perez, George Perez, Alberto (Bonnie) Perez, Graciela (Al) Perry, Anita (Allen) Elmgren, Josefina (Joe) Hoisington, Mario (Debbie) Perez, Nancy (Justin) Maiquez and Alejandro (Heather) Perez. His siblings; Eva Salinas, Tommy Cantu, Pedro (Yolanda) Perez and Gilbert (Judy) Perez. Countless grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and because he left an impression on anyone who crossed his path, more friends than anyone could imagine.

Everyone who knew Alonzo knew he was the life of the party, and the first on the dance floor with his botas vaqueras. He enjoyed sharing meals with others, fishing, good Mexican music, and most of all laughing alongside his family. Alonzo made an lasting impression and will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him for decades to come.
