Lila Olson - February 17, 1924 - April 09, 2022

Departed: 04/09/2022 (Groton)
Obituary Preview: Lila Ball Olson at the age of 98 went to meet her Savior and Lord on April 9, 2022.  Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14th at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Groton.  Pastor Kari Foss will officiate.  Following the service, Lila’s wishes were to have her body donated to the USD Medical Program in order to help others.  Visitation will be held at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m.
Lila was born on February 17, 1924 at a farmhouse in Day County near Butler, SD to Gladys (Simmons) and Edward Herr.  The family moved to a farm in Beotia Township in Spink County.  She attended a one-room school at Beotia No. 2.  In those days there were many farms in each township and Lila enjoyed playing with neighbor friends that lived close enough that she could walk to their homes.
Even though she grew up in the dirty thirties her parents managed to give her a happy childhood.  The community had high moral standards and expected their children to obey them.  She attended Conde High School and rode with an older neighbor boy until the weather got bad.  Then she stayed in a dormitory while attending school.
Henry Ball came with his friend on a blind date.  The sparks must have flown as Lila was married shortly after graduating from high school.  They lived with Henry’s parents near Verdon until Janet was born in 1945.  Then they moved to a farm near Verdon where they were full-time farmers.  They raised cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens along with wheat, oats, barley, flax, corn, sorghum, cane, millet, and milk cows for family use.  One of the highlights of the week for them was the trip to Conde to get groceries, socialize and go to the movies.
They were blessed with four children, Janet, Loretta, Roger and Barbara.  Their children attended grade school at Verdon so that meant two trips a day while school was in session.  Muddy roads were a challenge for the times it rained.  Verdon school closed and the Conde school provided bus transportation so they all graduated from Conde High School.
Lila attended PTA meetings and sporting events with them.  She also had interesting experiences being a band mother.  Lila served as a 4-H leader for several years and learned right along with the girls in many activities especially in sewing, making most of her children’s clothing.  Lila also taught Sunday school while her children were attending.  She was a member of ELCA and church circles.
Following the death of Henry in 1980, Lila married Maurice Olson in 1983 and moved into a home in Groton with Maurice.  They enjoyed entertaining friends and family, traveling, and going to casinos.
Lila was widowed again at the passing of Maurice in 2002.  She continued to live in Groton until May 1, 2017 when she moved to Bethesda Towne Square.  Lila developed many friendships at her new residence.  Lila also continued to travel and make new memories with her daughter Janet.
Lila’s health declined in early 2022 and on March 14, 2022 it was necessary for her to move to Bethesda Nursing Home.
Preceding Lila in death were her parents, her siblings Ivan Herr, Elmer Herr, Beverly McComsey, Darlene Madsen; her husbands, Henry Ball and Maurice Olson; daughter Loretta Avery; son Roger Ball; sons-in-law Howard Dirksen, Earl Steinhoff, and Jerry Lehman; stepsons Roy Olson and Phillip Olson.
Left behind to celebrate her life are Janet Lehman, Barbara (Jerry) Hoefler, Ranae Ball (daughter-in-law), Merry Jo Ball (sister-in-law), Eileen Brandt (stepdaughter), Ginny Olson (stepdaughter-in-law), Debra McKiver (stepdaughter-in-law) and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-children.

Hilda passed away March 30, 2022 at Good Samaritan Society, St. Martin Village in Rapid City.
On July 20th 1922 the world welcomed a tiny but mighty little girl into the world.  Hilda Caroline Jahnke was born in a cabin on the family homestead to Frank and Anna Jahnke near Edgar Wisconsin.   Weighing in at 2lbs, Hilda was baptized at birth by her father. She was placed in a cigar box & was kept warm in a bread warmer of the wood burning stove. From that day on Hilda’s strength and determination sustained her throughout her life’s journey on this earth.   She even survived smallpox as a child.  Hilda attributed her strong faith & love of her heavenly Lord for her long & healthy life.   Hilda was never hospitalized except for the birth of her children.
While celebrating her 100th Christmas on earth, she recalled her happy times of her childhood of riding through the snow on a horse drawn sleigh & cutting down a Christmas tree.  Hilda was raised on a dairy farm and that is where she developed a deep love for cows, horses and other animals—even a pet racoon.
Hilda attended grade school at Edgar Country School & graduated from Athens Wisconsin High School in 1940.
In 1941 Hilda married Richard Fliehs in Berwyn, Illinois.   They lived in Chicago for a short time where Hilda was employed at American Phonobis & Richard worked at Union Asbestos.  Both companies produced materials for the war.  Chicago is where their first child “Duane” was born.  Richard, a widower, brought 5 children into their marriage.  In 1944, with their little boy & Richard’s three younger children, they moved to a farm southwest of Groton, SD.  Hilda was known for her speed of milking cows by hand.  They had 4 more children before Richard died in 1960.  True to her birthright & her strength, Hilda & her children weathered two more winters on the farm before moving into Groton.  It was then that she started her employment at St Luke’s Hospital working the night shift as a nurse’s aid.
In 1967 she married Lester Sippel and moved with the 2 youngest children, Dale & Sharon, to Lester’s farm near Houghton, South Dakota.  Together Lester & Hilda raised Charolais cattle.  In 1978 they were awarded SD Charolais Family of the Year.  It was during this time that Hilda & Lester were able to travel & showed cattle at various farm shows in South Dakota, Colorado, and Texas.
In 1978, Lester retired and moved into Groton where Hilda worked part time as a nurse’s aide at Colonial Manor.  Lester passed away in 1997.  Hilda continued to reside in Groton.   In 2019, Hilda moved to Rapid City and lived with Mike and Sharon until March of 2021 until she moved into Good Samaritan nursing home.   While living with Mike and Sharon, Hilda enjoyed daily visits from her grandchildren and regular tours of Bear Country and the Wildlife Loop near Custer.   She loved going to all their various events and activities.  She was thankful to be living in their home during the Covid Pandemic.
Hilda was happiest when surrounded by her family.  She was well known for her sweet tooth and her love of baking. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Groton for 78 years.    Her mission in life was to; teach her children and grandchildren to be honest and considerate of others and to put their trust in Jesus our Savior.

Earl Grandpre - January 30, 1926 - February 27, 2022

Departed: 02/27/2022 (Groton)
Obituary Preview: Mass of Christian Burial for Earl Grandpre, 96, formerly of Conde will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5th at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Groton.  Father Greg Tschakert will officiate.  Inurnment with military honors will be held in the spring at the Conde Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.
Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 5-7 p.m. with a rosary and wake service at 6:30 p.m.
Earl passed away on February 27, 2022 at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.
Setting the tone for his life, Earl’s birth certificate on January 30th, 1926, read “Baby Boy” Grandpre. The mistake was never corrected and caused much confusion when he applied for Social Security in later life. It also resulted in a lifetime of quick wit and storytelling.  Earl was the youngest child of Herman and Mae (O’Neil) Grandpre and was a constant companion to his father. He attended grade school in a one room school near the farm and could recite poems he learned up until the very day he passed away. He went on to the high school in Conde and lived in the dormitories as many “country kids” did then. It was in high school, that he met “his girl” Olga Hynes. Though they were not impressed with each other then, they went on to marry and rear a family of six on the Grandpre farm. He tried his hand at raising sheep (too stupid), chickens (too stupid), and milk cows (too much work and the kids wanted milk from town). He settled on pigs (smartest animals ever).
Earl joined the army in 1944 and was stationed in Europe as a radio man. Upon his return, he attended what was then Northern Normal to study architecture. However, when his brother left the farm, he returned home to farm with his father. The skills he learned at college served him well the rest of his life as he was always inventing better methods to perform the chores. Ingenious devices for sorting hogs and treating hogs were developed.
Earl was the longest serving member of the Donald A Lewis Legion Post. He was proud of his service and was a very active member. He took on the project of creating a memory board of all servicemen who had served in the Conde/Turton area. This project involving scanning and sizing all pictures sent to him. This board is now on display at the Conde Community Building. He was also a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Church in Conde. He created a map of the Catholic cemetery and spearheaded the fundraiser to create a perpetual fund for its upkeep.
Over the years he built many wonderful keepsakes for his family. The glider swing on the farm was the scene of many a family story telling event. Each child was allowed to request a large project. This resulted in china closets, desks, and gun racks and gun cabinets. Every Christmas, he would create seven wood working projects (one for each kid and one for mom.) We each received music boxes, plate racks, end tables, clocks, plant stands, gun cabinets and gun racks, etc.
After he retired, he took up the computer. He wrote five books into which he scanned the pictures. Three family history books, one book about the church and two books that compiled Facebook postings to the Conde Site, were enjoyed by family and friends alike. One of his last projects was compiling a list of his father’s and his favorite songs. He saved the links to the music in a spread sheet in order that the entire family could enjoy them.
His final project was to use his architecture skills and build a replica of the family farmhouse from popsicle sticks. Sadly he was not to complete this project but had drawn the template.
He was constantly singing as a school bus driver, farmer, church member, around the house, and throughout Nano Nagle and Mother Joseph. He was known for it among the residents at the home.
He loved nothing better than to pull a practical joke on people and would spend much time devising clever pranks. He called himself the Great Pretender, but there was no one as real in his love of his God, His country and his family.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 68 years and his siblings: Neil Grandpre, Florence Jones and Dorothy Hanna.
He is survived by his children: Paula Thomas (Ray Otterson), Fargo; Suzanne (Kim) Gross, Sioux Falls; Bob (Becky) Grandpre, Elkhorn, NE; Donn (Renee) Grandpre, Aberdeen; Brian Grandpre, Aberdeen; Joan (James) Monson, Aberdeen. Grandchildren: Michael, Nikki, Ramey, Jessica, Kelli, Patrick, Nathan, Jenny, Ryan, Lisa, Andrew, Brian and Parker. Great Granchildren: Diem & Wrenley; Evan and Ali; Gavin, Cory & Jordyn; Josiah, Maddie, Zelda and Finley.
Family prefers memorials that will be distributed to the Conde Catholic Cemetery. www.paetznick-garness.com
