Phillip M. DeTraglia - October 27, 1958 - May 13, 2024

Departed: 05/13/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Phillip M. DeTraglia, 65, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024, at Wynn Hospital, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family.
Born on October 27, 1958, Phillip was the beloved son of Frank J. and Margaret E. (Morris) DeTraglia. He made great memories growing up in Clinton. He held the record for the 25-yard freestyle at the Clinton Pool for many years, a testament to his love for swimming. Phillip’s magnetic personality made him a well-known and beloved figure in Clinton, where he brought joy and laughter to many as a bartender at Alteri’s, the Village Tavern, and The Rok. He was a fantastic storyteller whose humor and warmth endeared him to all.
Phillip's remarkable work ethic was a cornerstone of his life. After dedicating 40 years to the New York State Corrections, he retired as a Captain, having formed lasting bonds with his colleagues at Queensboro and Midstate who he regarded as his second family. His immense heart, infectious smile, and subtle humor left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
A passionate fan of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Vikings, Phillip created countless treasured memories with his children watching games both at home and at the stadium. His love for golf and pitch brought him great joy, and he was known for his skill in both. Phillip’s great taste in music was celebrated during his final days, as his family played his favorite tunes, bringing him comfort and peace. He got a thrill out of a garage sale bargain, often calling his children to share his latest find. An exceptional cook, Phillip loved preparing meals for his family and friends, especially with his daughter Carly, who shared his culinary passion.
Phillip's family was the center of his universe. His unwavering love and support were constants in the lives of his children and grandchildren. As Pop Pop/Papa, he never missed a birthday or event, always there to cheer on his grandkids – overloading his camera with photos. His generosity knew no bounds; he would give anything to his loved ones and was often caught sneaking his card to cover the bill after a great night with family and friends.
Phillip's legacy of love and generosity will be forever cherished by his two daughters, his son, and their spouses: Mary and Chris Henry, John and Natalie DeTraglia, and Carly DeTraglia, all of Clinton. His adored grandchildren, Caroline and Tess Henry, and Gabriella and Luca DeTraglia, will always remember the joy he brought to their lives. Phillip is also survived by his brothers and sisters and their spouses: Mike DeTraglia and his wife Lynda Woolard, David and Kate Parker, AJ and Cindy Parker, Christian and Jennifer Parker, Tina and Leo McNulty, Tim DeTraglia, and Taira and Mike Morgia; the mother of his children, Margaret Nolan DeTraglia; his birth parents, Michael W. DeTraglia, Sr. and Nan B. Jones Parker; and many other dear family members, including his niece Bess DeTraglia with whom he shared a special bond and nephews Bill Hart and Michael DeTraglia III, and his Aunts and Uncles, including Toni and Peter Grygiel.
He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Peg DeTraglia, his aunt and uncle Margo DeTraglia Hagen and Terry Hagen, and his sister-in-law, Beth Dooher DeTraglia.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the Memorial Calling Hours on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 4-7 pm at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, 35 College St., Clinton. A Celebration of Phillip's Life will be held at a later date to honor the incredible man he was.

Departed: 05/12/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Rev. James W. Boersma, age 85, of Deansboro, NY passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 7, 1938, in Holmen, Wisconsin, he was the oldest son of the late Willard and Margaret (LaFleur) Boersma. On June 3, 1960, he married the love of his life, Nancy Panciera. Together they raised their family and served the Lord faithfully in both full-time and lay ministry roles over the next 63 years. Upon graduating from Omaha Baptist Bible College, Jim served as Pastor of First Baptist Church of Spearfish, SD, Broadalbin Baptist Church, Broadalbin, NY and Grace Baptist Church of Clinton NY. While living in his current hometown he served for many years as the Youth Director at Bible Baptist Church of New Hartford, NY. After leaving full-time ministry, he served on missions trips to Haiti, France, and Trinidad & Tobago. He also enjoyed many opportunities to serve as Interim Pastor or provide preaching coverage for his many Pastor friends. He was a mentor and friend to many young people, missionaries and pastors, pointing them all toward Jesus and encouraging them to pursue holiness in their own lives.
Jim was a skilled and trusted contractor and an avid gardener - he could build or fix just about anything and was seemingly capable of growing an annual bumper crop of vegetables that he loved to share with friends and family and neighbors. He welcomed opportunities to engage his community, serving two terms on the Marshall Town Board and frequently offering prayers at public events. Although he always had a full calendar, in his free time he enjoyed quiet times fishing with family, and louder times of debating politics and theology with most anyone - but one of his greatest joys was spending time with his large and loving family. Family gatherings typically found him entertaining the youngest children with rousing laughter as he led them in playing Drop the Hanky. In his younger years, he was often the central figure of backyard softball games for the neighborhood, followed up by serving massive bowls of Schwan’s ice cream to all.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy; ten children and their spouses, Debra Gilbert, Lynnette and Brian Wyman, Cheryl and Don Braun, Joy Boersma, Doug and Elaine Boersma, Tim and Angelica Boersma, Leah and James Conley, Amy Magnus, Brian and Kelly Boersma, and Lisa and Subsen Ortiz; his twenty-two cherished grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Karen Boersma; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Gary Butler; and many nieces and nephews. Beverly J. Stressel - October 02, 1926 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Beverly Jean (Harrison) Stressel of Clarks Mills, NY passed away on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024 in Hamilton, NY at the fabulous age of 97. Bev was born to Daniel and Mary (Parsons) Harrison in Canastota, NY on October 2nd, 1926. She lived nearly her entire life in the Westmoreland and Clarks Mills area, where she met the love of her life Otto Stressel, and married on July 24th, 1948.
Bev is survived by her daughters and son-in-law’s Spring and Dave Graham of Norwich, NY, and Lynn and David Kozak of Utica, NY; three grandchildren and their spouses Amber Graham (Seth Weith-Glushko) of Rochester, NY, Alina Capria (Luke Capria) of Syracuse, NY, and Steven Kozak (Sarah Kozak) of Fairport, NY; great-grandsons Carter and Beckett Weith and Graham and Harrison Capria; and her brother James Harrison (Verna Myers) of Bracey, VA, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is welcomed to heaven by Otto, her mother and father, brother Leroy Harrison, sister Justine Ano, and a chorus of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Bev and Ottie embraced music, dancing (especially the jitter bug), ping pong, local “adventures” (usually involving Ottie driving on some back road and getting them lost) and spending time with their families. She loved to take her family camping, even with all of the spiders in the tent. She and Ottie eventually owned a small camper, which their grandchildren would use to play “drive-thru” diner.
Bev was an active performance musician with the Floyd Band, the Shriners, the Mohawk Symphony Orchestra, the Clarks Mills Band and the Old Timers Band. She was also a fixture at the Clarks Mills United Methodist Church, playing both organ and piano from the 1950s until the mid-2010s. One of the defining features in her home was a singing teapot mosaic in the floor tiles of her kitchen, piano keys tiled down the hallways, and sheet music curtains. While primarily a clarinetist and pianist, she also picked up the baritone and played in multiple regional Tuba Christmases, a tradition now carried on by her grandson Graham. She loved music across all genres, from hymnals to her family’s favorite, Hernando’s Hideaway, which she played the bass line on her baritone with gusto, if not always accuracy, at family events. Far from a traditional 1950s housewife, Bev worked as a court stenographer and at Hamilton College in the financial aid department. Wanting to advance her career, she enrolled at Utica College in her 60s, earning her bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1989. She advocated for higher education for her entire family, including sending small amounts to her grandsons “for their college accounts” and inspiring her daughters and granddaughters to advanced degrees. An avid genealogist, she traced her family’s ancestry back to Governor John Bradford of the pilgrim’s crossing, the Bennetts of England, and even the Viking era. She would routinely introduce new rituals at the Thanksgiving dinner table, including her last involving five pieces of corn on a paper plate to remind everyone that was all the pilgrims would have to eat, while her family tucked into the bounty of the harvest season. She was also known for her gigantic purse, which held everything from notepads
(she was fluent in shorthand), decorated pens, office supplies, a stapler, a full medical kit, dark chocolate, and paper towels.
Bev was also known as a collector and spreader of her “joys.” She would scour the news and the internet to find the good news stories; some of her favorites included the Good News Network, Upworthy, Reader’s Digest, Scientific American, and the local news. She would bring these to share in church, in family print newsletters that eventually turned into emails, and with anyone who she decided needed cheering up.

John Michael Shepherd - October 21, 1925 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: John M. (Jack) Shepherd, born October 21, 1925, passed away on March 23, 2024. Jack was the son of Margaret and William Shepherd and attended Clark Mills and Clinton schools. He proudly served as a Navy radio operator during World War II, on the USS Klondike. Jack was an avid basketball player in his younger days, earning the nickname “Pop” for his shot-making skill. In fact, he met the love of his life at a game—Eileen Ford of Paris Hill. They married in 1949 and raised 12 children in Clark Mills. Their house was the center of activity in the neighborhood. Jack shared his love of the Adirondacks with his family. Each year, the Shepherds and Moriartys (Eileen’s sister) would rent camps or embark on a canoe trip in the Adirondacks, a tradition that lives on to this day (minus the homemade tents and dehydrated foods). Jack worked for the telephone company for more than 36 years, retiring in 1984. In retirement, he took on small electrical jobs (earning a second nickname “Sparky”). He and Eileen also traveled extensively in retirement and loved nothing more than playing cards and spending time with family, especially the grandchildren. (He taught them all Golden Crimson Tulips, which they have since taught their own children.)
Jack was preceded in death by an infant son, as well as sons, Jim and Tom, and siblings Marie, Jane, Ralph, Nash, Leo, and Bob. Jack is survived by wife Eileen, sister Gert Flint and children Bill (Karen), John (Becky), Rebecca (Dick), Bob (Carla), Larry (Karen), Theresa (Wayne), Missy (Mark), Patrick (Linda, deceased), Louis, and Lynn (Connie), 20 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Jack was a patriotic servant to his community. An active member of the Clark Mills American Legion for more than 75 years, he served as treasurer for 25 years. He was a charter member of the Clark Mills Volunteer Fire Department, holding several offices over the years, including commissioner, which he gave up only when he moved to Kirkland. Jack was a staunch advocate for wholesome activities for the neighborhood, serving as a Boy Scouts leader. He was instrumental in creating ball fields in town and getting a branch of the Kirkland Public Library installed in Clark Mills Elementary School. He also distributed food for the Salvation Army and served as president of the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, continuing his volunteer work into his late 80s.
Jack and Eileen moved from Kirkland to Sunset Woods in New Hartford in 2015. He really enjoyed the carefree lifestyle there—as well as the music entertainment and, of course, all the card playing.
The family would like to thank Live Long at Home caregivers, the Veterans Administration, and hospice nurses for all of their support during Jack’s last months. Calling hours will be held at Owens-Pavlot &Rogers Funeral Service in Clinton on Tuesday, March 26, from 4 to 7

Roger W. Cresswell Jr. - August 12, 1933 - March 16, 2024

Departed: 03/16/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Roger William Cresswell, Jr., 90, passed peacefully to heaven on March 16, 2024, at Wynn Hospital, surrounded by his family. Roger, known to many as Mannie, was born on August 12, 1933, in Utica, NY, to Roger William and Margaret Julia (Rieben) Cresswell, Sr.
Roger, a proud Clintonian, lived there his entire life. During his high school years, he enjoyed participating in numerous clubs and playing football and hockey while making lifelong friendships. Following his 1951 graduation, Roger enrolled as an education major at the former Champlain College in Plattsburgh and played for its football and hockey teams.
College was interrupted when Roger was drafted in 1953. He and his childhood buddy Dick Owens headed to Fort Devens, MA, for boot camp. They were to be deployed together upon completion, but Roger came down with a severe case of tonsillitis, and the two were separated. Roger was stationed with the Army Medical Corps at the 141st General Hospital in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan, and honorably served for two years as an EENT. On one occasion, he photographed and shook hands with honeymooners Mr. and Mrs. Joe (Marilyn Monroe) DiMaggio as the couple toured the army hospital. During any spare time Roger had there, he enjoyed teaching hockey skills to teenagers living near the base, using brooms and balls for sticks and pucks. Upon his return to Clinton, Roger enrolled at Oswego State Teachers College to study industrial arts.
By 1956, Roger had noticed that a girl in town had grown up while he had been away, and they fell in love. On August 24, 1957, at St. Mary’s Church, where Roger would later become a communicant, he married his beloved Barbara Ann Williams, a loving union that lasted 65 years until her passing on March 14, 2023. Throughout 1959, after long days at his job and on weekends, Roger toiled until dark to build the house that became his home for the rest of his life. It was there, he and Barbara raised their daughters and enjoyed their family and friends.
Roger, a skilled carpenter, worked for Bob Langdon, Bob Herthum, Ted Blake, and the Wilkinson Brothers between the years 1957 and 1972. In December of 1972, he became the Superintendent of Buildings, Grounds, and Transportation for the Clinton Central School District. He held that position for 22 years until his retirement in 1994. In addition, Roger and his close friend Bill Creaser accomplished countless moonlighting carpentry projects over several decades. They were a talented and productive team. Roger was honored to be included with the inaugural group of inductees to the CCS District's “Hall of Distinction” in 2005. In his younger adult years, Roger was a member of the Clinton Fire Department, a defenseman on the Clinton Stars team of the Clinton Hockey Club, and a Clinton Youth Hockey Pee Wee coach. He was also a proud member of the American Legion, Helmuth-Ingalls Post 232.
Roger had many interests and enjoyed many activities. He and Barbara enthusiastically attended their grandchildren’s sporting events and relished the fierce competition of Crazy 8 card games. Roger also enjoyed puttering and creating beautiful things. He took pleasure in leisurely drives on the back roads of Oneida and Madison counties while enjoying the wildlife he saw and marveling at the beauty of nature. Fishing, jigsaw and word puzzles, and Louis L’Amour and William Johnstone western novels gave Roger some pleasant quiet time. He also looked forward to NASCAR races on Sunday afternoons.
Roger is survived by his loving family: daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Matthew DeCotis and Bonnie and Rich Maxam; grandchildren, Amy DeCotis, who is also his goddaughter; Richie Maxam and Kelly Mason, Roger Maxam, and Jenny and Alex Steinhilber; great-granddaughter, Julia Madden and her father, Colin; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including his lifelong dear friends, Warren Evans and Ray Morgan.
In addition to his cherished wife, Barbara, Roger was predeceased by his firstborn newborn daughter, Deborah Ann Cresswell; sister, Barbara Anne Markey; brother, Charles Stephen Cresswell; grandson, Daniel DeCotis; and many other loved family and friends.
Roger was a man of integrity. He was determined, extremely hardworking, and an excellent provider for his family. Roger was known for being creative, organized, and always having a plan. He taught his family well, and they are thankful for the values he instilled in them. Roger will be remembered with much love and respect.
Friends and family may call on Friday, March 22, 2024, at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Services, 35 College St., Clinton, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at St. Mary’s Church, Marvin St., Clinton. Interment will be later in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Clinton. Please consider contributions in Roger’s memory to the Clinton Fire Department, c/o Jim Jenkins, Treasurer, PO Box 134, Clinton, NY 13323; or St. Mary's Church, 13 Marvin St., Clinton, NY 13323; or the Clinton Central School District Foundation, 75 Chenango Ave., Clinton, NY 13323.
Many dedicated and kind family, friends, and home caretakers, Wendy, Debbie, Holly, and Mary Ann, assisted Roger in many ways with gentle care, pleasant conversation, and enjoyable car rides. Barbara G. Starnes - May 04, 1933 - February 10, 2024

Departed: 02/10/2024 (Clinton)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Baldwin Graves Starnes
Born the 4th of May in 1933, Barbara Baldwin Graves was the second child of Edgar and Beatrice Graves. Barbara passed away at her home on College Hill Saturday 10 February 2024 surrounded by family.
Regularly referring to herself as the longest resident on College Hill not yet in the cemetery, Barbara lived a full life in the arms of Hamilton. Her father, Edgar “Digger” Graves, who arrived on The Hill in 1927, was a long-time chairman of Hamilton’s History Department. His scholarly production culminated with A Bibliography of English History to 1485. Barbara’s brother, Stephen Palmer Graves, was graduated from Hamilton in 1954 and subsequently died of polio at the School of Languages in Bologna, Italy in 1956.
Barbara loved sports and particularly ice hockey. She played on the College Hill Killers boys’ team who were archrivals of the Clinton Devil Dogs. Loved golf and tennis at Hamilton and eventually at the Sadaquada Golf Club. After a short stint at Wells College resulting in her becoming an early college dropout, Barbara graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston. She then took a post at the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington. After her brother’s death, she travelled to Istanbul, Turkey with the Consul General of Istanbul – Robert Miner and his family. (Miner was a student of her father’s and graduated from Hamilton 1932).
Returning from Istanbul in 1957, Barbara married a Hamilton history professor, William DeMarcus Starnes, at the Hamilton Chapel. They had one son, Stephen. Professor Starnes died in 1961.
While raising a little boy as a single mother, Barbara eventually graduated from both Syracuse University and later with a Masters from Temple University in Philadelphia. She spent a 30-year career in the Whitesboro Central Schools as an elementary classroom teacher and later a reading specialist. Sabbaticals took her to Japan, the Australian Outback and China where she learned other methods of teaching children with learning differences. She taught graduate classes for teachers at SUNY College of Technology in Utica and, after retiring from Whitesboro, joined the Hamilton staff in the Higher Education Opportunity Programs running its tutoring classes.
After retiring from Hamilton, she became the inveterate adventure traveler. Australasia, The Antarctic, The Galapagos, Machu Pichu and eventually to Africa. Barbara became a safari addict of sorts with more than 20 trips to the African continent. Starting in East Africa for the Great Migration, then to trek with the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda. Turning south to run the Zambezi, the drive the bush of Zimbabwe, The Skeleton Coast of Namibia and finally to Africa’s Last Eden – Botswana’s Okavango Delta. She waited until Mandela was free before heading to South Africa and the Cape. On her last safari in 2014, she celebrated her 80th birthday accompanied by her son and daughter-in-law, and her granddaughter Elizabeth.
A highlight of her life on The Hill was the four years that her granddaughter, Elizabeth, attended Hamilton College. Despite Barbara’s insistence that she wouldn’t be a bother to Elizabeth on campus, her home on College Hill Road was often the site for dinners and informal salons with Elizabeth’s friends who came to adore her as their own grandmother.
In 2011 Barbara travelled to India with the Hamilton in India program. She was so inspired by the Gandhian institution she visited that she donated to the ashram for several years afterwards.
Barbara was a docent for many years at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute (now the Munson) and the Kirkland Town Library. She was a founding member of the board for A Better Chance in the Clinton Central Schools. And served as a volunteer marshal for the LPGA at local events.
For years she hosted a multitude of Hamilton’s foreign students at her home over vacations. She became “in loco parentis” to a cadre of those whose families were far away from The Hill. Barbara received the Jeff Little ’71 2016 Volunteer of the Year Award from Hamilton and continued to volunteer as a hostess for Alumni, Students and Faculty at her home until the Pandemic set in.
Barbara is survived by her son Stephen (Hamilton 1980) and his wife Rose of Philadelphia; her granddaughter Elizabeth Palmer Starnes Califano (Hamilton 2011), her husband Jayme and two great grandchildren, Holden 6 and Maren 3 of Bernardsville, NJ.
A memorial service will be held at Hamilton College later in the spring. Barbara’s family would like to thank the many friends, faculty and alumni of the College who have loved Barbara. And especially the caregivers of Oxford Home Health Care and Daughter for Hire. Donations of charitable nature can be made in Barbara’s memory to:
The Class of 1980 Phyllis Holmes Breland Scholarship at Hamilton College, The Sage Rink Renovation at Hamilton, The Stephen Palmer Graves Memorial Fund at Hamilton, or the Munson in Utica.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a way for loved ones to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and meaningful tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, interests, achievements, and other personal details that help to tell their story.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides additional information about the person's life.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your wishes may not be followed exactly as written, as family members or others may make changes after your passing.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often have deadlines for submission and publication, while online platforms may allow for immediate posting.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made to an obituary once it's been published in a newspaper. Online platforms may allow for edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?
