Colin Fraser Robertson - July 26, 1929 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Cherry Valley)
Obituary Preview: SPRINGFILED CENTER - Colin Fraser Robertson, 94, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away quietly at home on Thursday, April 18, 2024, under Helios Care, with his loving family and faithful caregivers at his side.
Colin was born on July 26, 1929 in Arlington, Mass, to Colin Baxter and Margaret Robertson. He was their only child. Following his mother’s early death, his father remarried a widow and Colin gained a dearly-loved sister, Margaret “Peg” Wilson.
In high school, Colin shared a homeroom assignment with his sweetheart and future wife of 67 years, Mary Roper, graduating in 1947. He went on to Yale University, entered the Marine Corps ROTC, and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Class of 1951. He and Mary were married on March 1, 1952, six weeks prior to his deployment to South Korea as a Second Lieutenant. While working with the Marine Corps of Engineers, Colin installed culverts to support roads, built bridges and hospitals, rebuilt schools and housing units and volunteered for active duty combat. During his service, he was promoted to Captain, earned a Purple Heart, and was honorably discharged in 1955.
Upon his safe return, Colin attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the G.I. bill, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering, Class of 1955, while Mary tended their first-born son and worked part-time. Shortly after, he worked in Boston on the digging and building of the Callahan tunnel. Tired of working underground, Colin took a job in California with Aerojet General, serving as lead engineer for the engine designs of the Apollo rocket series for NASA, which can now be found at the Smithsonian Museum. During these years, an additional son and daughter were added to their growing family. Colin also found time for his favorite pastime – hockey – playing for a semi-pro team called the Burgie Blues.
When Colin’s father required care, the family returned to Massachusetts, where Colin worked for Northern Research & Engineering in Cambridge. In 1972, the family moved to the 1761 homestead in Gilford, NH, known as Mt. Gunstock Farm. Colin worked for the city of Laconia and his former Marine Corps C.O., Colonel Frank DeNormandie – what an incredible reunion! After inheriting the family property, Colin realized he must work hard to preserve the heritage his parents left him and he and Mary formed a development business, Robertson Construction Co., Inc. As a general contractor, he built a development overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee on Mt. Gunstock land, a former 19th century summer campground, with roads named to honor his family’s legacy: Robertson Drive, Baxter Court, Margaret Way, and Colmar Court.
This chapter of their lives also included a tour of five years in China during the early 1980s, where Colin was the Project Manager within the construction and maintenance division of the U.S. State Department, building two new U.S. Embassies in Beijing. This work helped finance the continuation of Dockham Shore Forest Estates and Gilford Water Company, designed to service the sixty homes in the development. Upon returning to the U.S.A., Colin found new friends and colleagues in the Rotary and Toastmaster clubs, which he enjoyed immensely.
When the volume of housing construction slowed down, he began a new chapter working as Clerk of the Works on many school projects throughout New Hampshire. He also realized a life-long dream of re-building and renovating the 1761 family homestead, Mt. Gunstock Inn, adding on to the old house the former General Store from the campground. He also completely remodeled the last of the campground cottages, known as the California.
Until the last year, Colin remained independent and active, enjoying family visits and many friends, traveling between New Hampshire, New York, and Connecticut, also attending Belmont Baptist Church in New Hampshire and Community Bible Chapel in New York.
Colin is survived by a son, John, of Nashua, NH; a son, James and wife, Cindy of Newtown, CT.; a daughter, Gail and husband, Tim of Springfield Center, NY; grandchildren, William, Ashli, Colin, Forest, Elissa, Lindsay, and Evan; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Colin was predeceased by his parents, his wife Mary, and his sister, Peg.
Memorial services will be held at Community Bible Chapel in Cooperstown, NY on Saturday, May 11, 2024 @ 11am, and Belmont Baptist Church on Saturday May 18, 2024 @ 11am.
A Full Military Honors Service will be held at Old Post Chapel, Fort Meyer, Arlington National Cemetery, at a date to be announced in the future when ANC provides it to the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to Towers to Tunnels Foundation.
Arrangements are under the care of Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, NY with cremation taking place at The Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.

Charles was the King of Buel, he was a part of the last graduating class at the Buel School which he later purchased. After that he attended Canajoharie School where he was voted most popular and an essential part of the basketball team which remains the only undefeated team at Canajoharie.
He worked with his father and uncle on the farm which he later purchased in 1966. He met Lynn, the love of his life while he was letting the cows cross the road. When they were first married, they enjoyed square dancing, socializing with friends, and building their new home. While they raised their children they enjoyed the simple country life of camping, traveling, farming, snowmobiling, and sledding on the big hill across the road from their house.
Charles was an outdoors man who loved to hunt. He spent many hours on the Buck Bus with the Ames Gang. He bowled Monday nights for decades and also served on the Fonda Fair board as a director for 20 years.

For over 40 years Charles has played pitch in his shed with his friends and neighbors and it became the local hangout spot. The card shed has evolved over the years, with him building a new building in 2014 after selling the farm and Charlie still wants the card games to continue. He hopes that someone will carry on his legacy of bidding two without looking.

Jennifer Leigh Deselets - April 24, 1977 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Cherry Valley)
Obituary Preview: It is with profoundly broken hearts that we must tell you that Jennifer Leigh Deselets, 46 of West Winfield; beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday March 10th, 2024
Jennifer was born on April 24th, 1977 in Cooperstown to Claud & Connie Folds, and making Lisa the big sister she'd asked Santa for.
Jennifer spent her entire childhood in the small hamlet of Hartwick, NY. Fair weather days were filled with bike rides and camping and wading through creeks, while the snowy winters were equally fun with those snowmobile rides or the special occasion night time sledding. Jennifer was a member of the local girl scout and 4H troops, and while in high school, was afforded the opportunity to further explore her love of outdoor activities by participating in the Outward Bound program where she went kayaking on the Oswegatchee River and hiking. Jennifer graduated from Cooperstown Central School in the class of 1996. One month later she would bless her entire family by bringing her first daughter into the world.
After high school, Jennifer spent several years working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, preferring at home care and aiding elderly persons while maintaining their dignity within their own homes.
Around 2001, this young single father became smitten with Jennifer, and while at first, she was apprehensive, that man refused to give up on getting that first date. The date must have gone well because on August 24th, 2002, Jennifer married David Deselets and what was two little families became one. That family grew to include her brilliant stepdaughter Nicole, followed by a spunky little girl named Samantha, and finally, a precocious little boy named Ryder. Over the years, the family lived in Cherry Valley, Hartwick, and Conyers, Georgia before finally returning to New York.
Jennifer took immeasurable pride in her role as a caretaker, and it was to be further demonstrated even after she chose to leave the field. She gathered friends like wildflowers, and more often than not, those friendships grew into bonds more familial. Laurence Edward Vitzthum - March 12, 1931 - February 29, 2024

Departed: 02/29/2024 (Cherry Valley)
Obituary Preview: Laurence E. Vitzthum of Springfield passed away peacefully on February 29, 2024, in Hudson NY with supportive and loving family by his side. It is fitting that he should pass on a day as unique as leap day, as he led an unusual life and often took the road less traveled.
Larry or Lau as he was known to those who knew and loved him was born on March 12, 1931, in Queens, New York, to the late Christian and Adelaide (Coles) Vitzthum. In the 1940s their family relocated to a farm on Spring Lake Road in Red Hook NY. He married the love of his life and partner of 40 years Rose Dougher on May 14, 1966. Rose predeceased Larry in 2005. He is also predeceased by his sibling Ellen (Vitzthum) Hogan who died in 2019. He is survived by Ellen's five children, and numerous nephews, nieces and their children too numerous to list from both his and Roses' families. He kept in touch with the extended family and loved to hear of each person's hopes, dreams and accomplishments.
His love and devotion to Rose never waned and in 2006 he had a church built and dedicated to her in a remote village in India to serve the local residents there. At that time he referred to Rose as "such a candle as shall never be put out". His global awareness and understanding came out of a life full of adventure and travel. In 1962 as a young single man, he set out to hike across Europe. He covered almost 5,000 miles across France, Spain, Monaco, Italy, England and Ireland. He devoted some years after he returned home to the work of the Catholic Worker organization. In later years, Larry and Rose made multiple transatlantic voyages and enjoyed life aboard cruise ships including the Queen Elizabeth.
Larry was a true renaissance man who had skills in many disciplines including Astronomy, Photography, Painting and Woodworking. He was an all around handyman which enabled him to renovate an 1840s farmhouse when he and Rose moved to Springfield in 1971 which became his castle and one of his great joys until the end of his life. Once settled there and their house was complete, Larry managed a hardware store in Cooperstown, NY until he retired. Being near the Baseball Hall of Fame was of interest to a man who in his younger years was a talented baseball player and had the opportunity to try out for a professional baseball team in Philadelphia. He was a lifelong learner and avid reader. If you invited him to your house, he would read half your bookshelf in his spare minutes between visiting. He was also a car and racing enthusiast who enjoyed visiting Watkins Glen and cared for his little red Acura and Honda (his last two cars) as if they were finely tuned Formula One racers.
In his final 20 years, Larry had a great devotion to his faith and to Jesus and his Blessed Mother Mary. He spent countless hours at the Rosa Mystica House of Prayer, a hilltop shrine near Edmeston, NY. He would listen to the stories of pilgrims, and share his own stories of miracles and life changing events. Curating and praying for a long list of people he met there became a vocation until the end of his life. He enjoyed spending holidays with family in the Hudson Valley, eating good food, and sharing from his treasure trove of knowledge and experience.
The family is thankful to the doctors, nurses and aides who cared for Larry during his final two months in Catskill and Hudson NY.
Family and Friends may attend calling hours from 1 - 3PM on Friday, March 8th, 2024 at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30pm on Friday, March 8th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Cherry Valley, NY.
