Theresa J. Matino - June 06, 1915 - December 24, 2021

Departed: 12/24/2021 (Shenandoah)
Obituary Preview: Theresa J. Matino When Italians toast, they say “cent’ anni” which means “a hundred years”. The wish is to live a healthy, vibrant life to 100. It is rare that one actually does. Theresa Matino lived 106 of them. It is with heavy hearts we share that Mrs. Theresa Matino, our amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt and friend passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2021, at Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital after a short illness. Born in Frackville, PA, on June 6, 1915, Theresa was the daughter of the late Francesco and Rosina Tancredi. She married Neal Peter Matino in 1932. She lived in her childhood home for 106 years, raising two sons, and taking care of her parents until their deaths. Theresa was a wonderful student who loved her academic studies. She often shared fond memories of her school years, especially her teachers, who saw academic vigor and promise in Theresa, asking her to join their after school drama club and advanced foreign language classes. When asked what she would have liked to be if she had the opportunity to go to college, Theresa replied, “Teacher”. Theresa was an avid reader and learner, she enjoyed her daily crossword puzzle and delighted in beating her family members in Scrabble. Even up to her final years, Theresa talked politics and current events. She had a brilliant mind. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Shenandoah, PA. She spent many years working for her church and loved the annual Feast Day of Our Lady. Theresa created beautiful hand-held floats called “cintas” that were proudly carried throughout the streets during the procession. Her work with the church was consistent and admirable. In addition to her parents, Theresa was preceded in death by her loving husband, Neal; siblings Jennie Carlone, Mary Cadau, Rachael Nause, Genaro and John Tancredi. Surviving are two sons, Frank Matino, of Shenandoah, PA with whom she resided; and Nicholas Matino and his wife, Frances, of Corinth, NY. Three granddaughters, Mary Roehrenbeck (Rece), Teresa Garcia (Alan) and Nicole Matino; five great-grandchildren, Megan, Katherine, and Francesca Roehrenbeck and Nicholas and Lindsey Garcia and most recently a great-great granddaughter, Charlotte, in which she marked a “5th Generation” celebration; and many special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Also, dear friends, Bill and Anna Boychak, who she considered family. Theresa delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they adored her. She firmly believed in family and was committed to passing on her Italian traditions by teaching them sewing, storytelling, cooking and baking. It was amazing to see how engaged they were when she discussed, in detail, events that she lived through that they were learning about. Nothing brought her more joy, however, than her “open house”. Aunt Theresa, as so many call her, would open her doors during many holidays for friends and family to stop by for a quick pick-me-up or some delicious treats. She loved to laugh, talk, and entertain anyone who would stop by. The more the merrier in her eyes. People would often ask the secret to her longevity. Theresa believed in a healthy Mediterranean diet consisting of little to no preservatives in her food, optimism, always giggling, staying social and the occasional bottle of beer! She wrote handwritten cards and notes for every occasion to each family member, right up until she passed. We will miss these forms of communication the most. Her optimism, charm and brilliance are treasures to this world and ones we can all learn to live by. Funeral Arrangements are being provided by Oravitz Home for Funerals, Inc., 40 N. Jardin St. Shenandoah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Divine Mercy RC Parish in June 2022. A celebration of Theresa’s life will be held in June 2022, on what would have been her 107th birthday. The family requests memorial contributions be sent to your favorite charity.
