Thomas Gerald Suwyn - March 02, 1944 - June 03, 2021

Departed: 06/03/2021 (Delta)
Obituary Preview: Thomas Gerald Suwyn, 77, died on June 3, 2021, at home in Oak City, Utah, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Tom was born on March 2, 1944, in Denver, Colorado, to Wilbert John and Betty Lou English Suwyn. He was raised in Southern California, the eldest of six children. Tom married Rosalyn Frances Loving on November 11, 1966.
Above all, Tom was a kind and gentle man and his devotion to God was evident in the life he lived. While raising a family of five boys, Tom and Rosalyn joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a faithful member and served in various callings throughout his life. Tom taught his sons to have faith, work hard, and have fun. Together, they enjoyed football, wrestling, hunting, fishing and dutch-oven cooking. Their lives were touched by tragedy when his son Chet Jeremy died in an accident in 1991, and again when Rosalyn passed away in 1997.
Tom met Sara Rae Finlinson when they were set up on a blind date. They felt an instant connection and married on September 27, 1997. After several years of marriage, they settled in her home town of Oak City. Tom loved life in Oak City, where he raised chickens, pigs, and cows, kept horses, grew a productive vegetable garden, and was a beloved member of the community.
Tom lived a life of serving others. In his younger years, he served in the Marine Corp, worked as a technician in California state mental institutions, and mentored at-risk youth in Idaho. He ultimately found his calling in Wildland Fire Management, where he enjoyed a 30+ year career. During his time with the BLM, he mentored many young firefighters and was respected and loved by all who worked with him. At the pinnacle of his career, Tom was the Incident Commander of his own team of firefighters, Suwyn’s Type II Fire Team. For more than a decade, they fought many large wildfires throughout the Western United States. Tom saw his work as more than just fighting fires, it was an opportunity to support others in the development and advancement of their own careers.
Tom’s family thanks nurses Sherri and Rebecca for the kind and gentle care they provided him in the final months of his life.
Tom is survived by his wife, Sara Rae Suwyn; children, Troy (Sarah) Suwyn, Huntington, UT; Nicholas (Julie) Suwyn, Peoria, AZ; Joshua (Tobi) Suwyn, St. George, UT; Micah (April) Suwyn, Hurricane, UT; Calee (Brian) Jackson, Oak City, UT; Jim (Emily) Burraston, Spanish Fork, UT; Cassie (Matt) Porter, Spanish Fork, UT; Jace Burraston, Spanish Fork, UT; sisters, Cheryl and Patti; brothers, Bob and Gary; 28 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Ann Lee Roper - April 18, 1939 - October 17, 2020

Departed: 10/17/2020 (Delta)
Obituary Preview: Ann Lee Black Roper was born to Martha Mae and Paul James Black on April 18, 1939 in Blanding, Utah. Ann was the seventh of nine children: Dorman, Allie, Keith, Carolyn (passed away as a baby), Paul, Jim, Johnnie, and Jessie. They were a large typical Mormon family in a small Mormon town.
Mom had a very happy childhood. They were a busy family. Her father owned several gas stations, an oil transport business, a hotel, and a café.  The children were expected to help out whenever they could, especially at home. Ann’s mother ran the café and was a homemaker along with her church responsibilities. Ann and her siblings loved the café and sneaking free candy, treats, and ice cream. Ice cream cones were the big new thing. Ann, Jessie, and Johnnie considered themselves the three musketeers and spent their childhood together getting into mischief and having fun. The movie theater was right next door and their mother had bought them a year pass to keep them busy and out of her hair. Mom enjoyed going to Kayenta with her dad where he had a station.  She got to meet John Wayne and several other movie stars of the time.
The family later moved into a large comfortable home with spacious yard and garden spots. They were one of the first families to own a car in Blanding. Later her fourteen year old brother, Johnnie, was killed in a truck accident on a scouting trip between Bluff and Blanding. This left a big hole in Mom’s and the families’ heart.
Around this time Mom met Loyd the new young man in town.  He was in Blanding working on an oil rig.  He was just seventeen years old.  She was quite taken with him as he was ruggedly handsome! Dad said he fell in love with her at first sight.  They married a short time later and went to Oklahoma with Dad’s job.
Their first child Debbie was born in Oklahoma. A couple of years later Lyle, Wes, Diane, and Scott followed. They lived in Vernal, Ut for a time and later moved back to Blanding where Dad got a contract running the Blanding airport and flying commercial flights. Ann was kept busy helping run the airport and raising five children. She was a spotless housekeeper and wonderful cook. She almost always had home baked treats for us kids after school.  She also loved her callings in the church with the primary and relief society.
After the children were nearly raised, Ann and Loyd moved to Cascade, Id and then Vale, Or and finally settling in Payette, Id. Dad had a contract flying helicopter for the government. Mom helped raise three more children: Jennifer, Jeffrey, and Monte.  They were the joy of her life. She just loved being a homemaker and spending time with her children and grandchildren whenever possible.  Ann had 29 grandchildren and many greats.  They all adored her.
Later in life Ann developed scoliosis of the spine and had to be confined to a wheelchair.  She never complained or felt sorry for herself. In June 2019, her daughter Debbie brought her to the Millard Care Center where she lived the last year of her life. She made so many friends and was happy there. Loyd also came to the care center, and they spent the last six months together. Having Dad with her was a great comfort to mom. He passed away six weeks prior to her death; they sure didn’t want to be apart.  They were happily married for 64 years.
Now she is free of her crippled, tiny body and able to walk freely. We are thrilled to think of that! We will miss you terribly Mom. Your cute smile, darling sense of humor, and sweet spirit. But we know you are having a joyous reunion with Dad and all your family.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 24, 2020 at 11:30 in Olpin Stevens Funeral Home, Delta, Utah.  A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 11:00 to 11:20 AM.  Interment will be at Delta City Cemetery under the care of Olpin Stevens Funeral Home.

Carlyle Arthur Peterson - December 16, 1927 - September 08, 2020

Departed: 09/08/2020 (Delta)
Obituary Preview: On September 8, 2020, our loving dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend, peacefully passed away, at the age of 92, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loved ones. Carlyle “Corky” Arthur Peterson was born December 16, 1927, in Delta, Utah. He was the fourth child of seven boys to John and Katie Peterson. Carlyle often spoke of his childhood fondly, even when talking about being raised during The Great Depression. He frequently taught his posterity lessons about life and how to find what needed to be learned from hardships. He used to tell the story of having to share bath water with all of his brothers while growing up and how gross that water was by the time it got to be his turn or having to share one potato for dinner with six other brothers. He was always teaching those around him that life sometimes was hard, but always look for the good and how to learn from it.
Right after high school, Carlyle began working for the Union Pacific Railroad. Not too long into his career, he married his sweetheart, LuDean Day, on July 22, 1950, in Delta, Utah. Three months later, he was drafted by the Army to serve in the Korean War. During his two years of service, he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He was proud to serve his country, but he deeply missed his bride and wanted to come home to meet his newborn son. Carlyle was honorably discharged in 1952, and upon his return home, he continued working with the railroad for 39 years. During their life together, Carlyle and LuDean had three children: Carl, Bryce, and Sandy. They later solemnized their marriage on September 4, 1965, in the Manti LDS Temple.
Carlyle taught his children the importance of working hard and playing hard. He always worked hard to provide for his family and instilled a strong work ethic into his kids. But he also taught them to know when to have fun, take family vacations, and make memories. Carlyle loved spending time with his family camping, fishing, hunting, playing games, and traveling. Most of their retired life, Carlyle and LuDean traveled to many parts of the world. A highlight of their traveling was enjoying all kinds of cuisines, especially on cruises. Carlyle’s favorite was king crab and lobster.
Throughout his life, Carlyle was an avid athlete. In his youth, he participated in football, basketball, and boxing, but his all-time sports love was baseball. He was a talented pitcher and even pitched with his division’s team during his time in the Army. He continued his love for baseball as he coached both of his boys in their youth and continued to coach from the sidelines for many of his grandchildren. Carlyle was also a true-blue Delta Rabbit. He loved following all the team sports, especially football and “wrastling.” He was also a devoted fan of the Utah Jazz and the BYU Cougars and often scheduled his day around their games.
Carlyle’s love and patriotism for his country was demonstrated through his years of service with the American Legion Post 135. He participated in honoring our country and community with this group for over 20 years in parades, funerals, and flag ceremonies all over the county. Carlyle loved the honor of playing “Taps” after funerals with military rights. One of his favorite things was to present the colors before DHS football games. He missed it deeply the past couple years he had to sit them out. In fact, his love of this was so well known, that three days before his passing, the Delta High Football Team came to his home and presented Carlyle with “a challenge coin.” The team players earn these through their acts of service, and they wanted to commemorate Carlyle’s valiant years of dedication to his community and his country.
Carlyle was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He loved the gospel. He held many callings through the years and he served a mission for Deseret Industries from 2002-2003. Countless people often spoke of what an amazing home teacher he was to them. Carlyle was also in charge of organizing the temple van weekly for the senior citizens of Delta. He loved going to the Manti Temple every week, or going to any temple at any time for that matter. Both Carlyle and LuDean lived for their family. The most precious times to them were the times they were able to serve in the temple together. They especially loved the times they were able to go to the temple with their children and grandchildren. They would also stay in St. George during the winter months and go to the temple every day while there.
Carlyle is preceded in death by his wife, LuDean; his parents, John and Katie; his in-laws, John and Cora Day; his son, Carl; his granddaughter, Carla Hennessy; his grandson, KJ Black; his daughter-in-law, Deb Van Epps Peterson; his great-great-granddaughter, Vanessa Grogan; and his five brothers, Leland, Arland, Rodney, Shirley, and Raymond. Carlyle is survived by his favorite daughter, Sandy Black; his son, Bryce Peterson (Maryan); eight grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 17, 2020, at 11 a.m., at the Delta Stake Center, 125 White Sage Ave. Viewings will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2020, from 6-7 p.m., and Thursday at 9:30-10:40 a.m., prior to the service, both at the Delta Stake Center. Fred S Nielson - July 04, 1927 - April 04, 2020

Departed: 04/04/2020 (Delta)
Obituary Preview: Fred S Nielson, husband, father, grandfather,  great -grandfather, brother, good friend, and more, passed away peacefully in the late morning hours of Saturday, 4 April 2020, with family at his side, from complications of ‘Old Timers’ disease.  He was 92 years of age.
Fred was the 9th child of a family of 11 children born to Clarence Nielson and Dainy Dora Sheriff.  Fred was born on the 4th of July 1927, and was happy to celebrate his birthday, every year, with the entire nation.  He was very proud to be a “Yankee Doodle Boy”.
Fred was born, grew up, and lived the vast majority of his life in Oak City, Millard County, Utah.   The final months of his life were spent under the watchful and gentle care of the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff at the Millard Care & Rehabilitation facility in Delta, Utah.  His early years were spent learning the skills of farming with his father and brothers and sisters.  While his older brothers were called to military service during WWII, his ‘deployment’ was to help with operating and maintaining the family farm.  Skill’s learned during that time proved to be invaluable later on in his life as he provided for his family.  He attended Oak City Elementary School and graduated from Delta High School in 1945.
Fred married his eternal companion, Arlene East, in the Manti LDS Temple on 1 December 1947.  Together they were blessed with 4 children:  Gaylen Fred (Diane Woolley) Nielson, Craig East (Jackie Thomas) Nielson, Lisa Rae (Jeff) Lyman, Shauna ‘Lee’ (Wade) Nielson.  The family lived in 2 different homes in Oak City, one home being directly across the street from the other.
Fred’s working career covered a variety of occupations.  Early on, his work week (for the Rail Road) generally took him away from his family, Sunday night thru Friday night.  Weekends were spent with this Arlene and children.  He had a real love for farming.  An opportunity to work at McIntire’s Ranch in Leamington, Utah allowed him to return home each day and be with his family, though during the summer months his stops at home in the evening were barely long enough to grab a bite to eat and then run to McCornick to change the water on his 40 acre alfalfa farm, usually in the dark.  His time at McIntire’s Ranch provided an opportunity for him to help many young men with summer employment before missions or school.  Many of those friendships created then have endured to this day.  His working career concluded when he retired from Brush-Wellman (Materion Natural Resources).
Music was, and has always been an important part of Fred’s life.  He could often be heard outside, at night-time in the dark, whistling or singing to himself.  He sang with his Barbershop Quartet ‘Buddies’, Lyman Finlinson, Reece Finlinson, and Dean Anderson for years, always singing the high tenor part and adding his own subtle ‘theatrics’ to the number.  He was a member of the Oak City Ward Choir for decades and seldom missed a practice.   Some of his most enjoyable times in the choir were the Choir Concert presentations during Oak City Days.  His personal rehearsals would continue well after he had returned home from the practices.  Listening to his Country Music on his CD player provided hours of enjoyment several days a week.
When his health and physical ability permitted, Fred’s home garden was the envy of many passers-by.  Having a garden was always important to him and there were always fresh vegetables on his front lawn for the taking during harvest time.  He spent many hours planting and weeding the rows of corn, tomatoes, green beans, and much more.   His hours of patient and painstakingly coaxing the water down each furrow assured the plants would produce a maximum yield.
Fred was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Together with his companion, Arlene, he fulfilled an eighteen month Service Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Member Locator Facility in American Fork, Utah.  He enjoyed attending his church meetings each Sunday.  He loved to visit with people and was often the last to leave the building following the meetings.  His church callings brought him much pleasure and satisfaction.  He particularly enjoyed working with young men and provided a great example to them with his goodness, cheery personality, and positive attitude.  He spoke often, and with fondness, of his Home Teaching visits made with his companion and good friend, JB Lovell.  His ministering visits from Juan Lopez and other caring neighbors were always a bright spot in his day.
Fred and his companion, Arlene, provided a loving, happy, and caring environment in their humble home for their children and grandchildren, often at unseen personal sacrifice.  Examples for service to others, kindness, hard work, and the importance of family were on constant display.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, his parents, Clarence and Dainy, five sisters – Mildred Nielson (infant), Blanche (Ralph) Crafts, Enid (Maiben) Jacobson, Phyllis (Elvon) Anderson, Thelma (Gordon) Howes, and three brothers – Wayne (Beth) Nielson, Vern (Clara) Nielson and Lars Nielson (infant).  He is survived by one sister, Dorothy (Burke – deceased) Giles and one brother, Monte (Bonnie Remington) Nielson, his four children and their spouses, twenty grandchildren and fifty-five great grandchildren.  Visits with Gran’pa Fred will be greatly missed by all.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the Millard Care & Rehabilitation Doctors, Nurses and Staff for the kindness and care provided to Fred over these past many months.  He made many friends during his stay.  Many of his caregivers recognized him for his ability to maintain a positive attitude and smile, regardless of his condition.
In accordance with CDC and government guidelines in effect at this time, a private graveside service will be conducted.  A public memorial will be held at a future date to be announced.  Interment will be in the Oak City Cemetery under the care of Olpin Stevens Funeral Home.  Online condolences can be expressed at www.olpinstevensfuneralhome.com.
