They built their home in Norwalk, Iowa where they raised their one and only daughter, Danielle, who will always be known as his “Dani girl”. Paul was known for his quiet, humble, kind and gentle spirit. His unconditional love for his family and generosity in helping others were his greatest qualities. Everyone loved his dry sense of humor. And his unexpected witty remarks kept us all on our toes until the very end! Paul was a hardworking man who dedicated 33 years of service to the City of Norwalk Public Works Department. Paul used his creativity in many ways. Christmas was something Paul put lots of thought into, as he planned and created such personal and beautiful metal artwork gifts for those he loved. Paul was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan and loved watching NASCAR. From drones to potato guns to homemade trailers, he loved it all! What we will most remember about Paul was his ability to persevere throughout this difficult battle. We watched Paul’s faith deepen by the day. His strong faith in the Lord and total reliance upon God undeniably carried him throughout this entire journey. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kayla, and his daughter Danielle. He will be greatly missed by his siblings: Anna (Domonick) Cimino, Jerry Swift, Rita Krumbholz, David (Suzanne) Swift, and Lisa (Anthony) Scaglione, along with several nieces and nephews. Carol Christine Fugere-West - October 28, 1944 - November 29, 2021

Departed: 11/29/2021 (Norwalk)
Obituary Preview: Carol Christine (Larson) Fugere-West went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, November 29th at 77 years young. Carol was born on October 28th, 1944 in Carroll County, rural Hampstead, MD, the daughter of Cornelia Nanny Barksdale and Carl Victor Larson.  She was delivered at home by her mother where she was welcomed by six sisters and four brothers.  She was reared there until the age of four when they went by train from Baltimore, MD to Oakes, ND to farm on her father’s homestead.
After a few moves, they settled in Casselton, ND where she grew up and and attended school from the 4th grade until she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1962 She did waitress work from the time she was twelve years old through high school. During her junior and senior year she helped rear her brother and his wife’s little girls Mary Ann, an infant, and Connie, a little over a year old.  After graduation she took them by train to their parents in Portland, OR and remained there for six weeks.
Upon returning home, she went to Minneapolis where she worked at Peavey Company Flour Mills for two years. In 1965 she moved to Glendive, MT to help her sister with her children and catering business.  It was there she met her husband Julian J. Fugere, Jr. They were married February 12th, 1966 in Fargo, ND. They made their home in Glendive where they raised three sons, Trent, Travis, and Trevin.
Julian was employed at Montana Dakota Utilities traveling every other week and she worked at JC Penney Company for six years. They were very active in the Montana Jaycees and Jayceens. She held every office on the local level, was District 6 Vice President, chaplain of the Montana Jayceens, and received the Ada Spain Lifetime Membership award. In 1971 she traveled to Portland, OR for the National Convention with her husband, Trent, and Travis where they stayed with her brother and his family.
She was very supportive of her husband in Toastmasters International and traveled with him extensively. In 1973 Trevin arrived and she was very active in the boys school activities, PTA, making costumes for church and school productions, active in church, modeling for JC Penney’s, and dancing for the community productions.
In 1978 Julian took a new job and the family moved to Ankeny, IA on January 24, 1979. His work took him away from home a lot. She was employed at Des Moines Community College for six years. She became once more very active in the boys lives; school, community, church where she taught children's church for years and played guitar, teaching them songs to sing for regular church services, teaching them the Lord’s prayer, Beatitudes, Apostles Creed, Ten Commandments, and books of the bible just to mention a few.
Julian and Carol divorced June 27th, 1983. At one point she worked five jobs and did everything she could to raise 3 boys as a single mom. Sports and music were big items. She was very active in the boys’ lives, as much as possible, and was a Little League coach for Trent’s baseball team of thirteen boys. It was a great but hectic summer. Her and the boys stayed in Ankeny until 1988 when she sold the house and moved to Des Moines. All three boys graduated from Ankeny High School.
In the Fall of 1983, she was given an opportunity to run the Busch Pool League for the American Pool Players Association starting out with 28 teams. Upon getting the league up to fifty teams in 1985, it was hers. At one point she had 123 teams which consisted putting in sixty to eighty hours a week. She administered the league for twenty four years, retiring in the fall of 2007. She missed a lot of things with her boys which she really regretted because of working all the time.
On May 28th, 1988 she met her soulmate, Dan West, and after being together for twenty-five years, they were married on March 1st,2013 at Lutheran Church of Hope. In the fall of 1992 she went to truck driving school and got her Commercial Drivers License. She and Dan drove together for almost five years and loved every minute of it. She was able to get to every state except Maine and him to Florida so that was on her bucket list and it was always a dream of hers to go there.
After retiring in the fall of 2007, she took her younger sister Carla on a once in a lifetime road trip that took them from Des Moines to Texas, Georgia, Virginia, District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Gettysburg where their great grand father was wounded and died leading the Mississippi charge under his command many many years ago, to Wisconsin, and finally back to Fargo. She stayed there another two weeks and taught her sister how to quilt. What a memorable six week trip that was. After returning home she kept busy making quilt sets consisting of a crib quilt, pack and play quilt, rag quilt, receiving blanket, and eight burp cloths, giving them to churches, hospitals and lap robes for nursing homes.
Since 2009 she has spent a lot of time in Frisco, Texas with her youngest son and their children helping out where she could and taking care of the children while they worked. Trevin and Jenny are both chiropractors and she is also a nurse practitioner. They have three children, Summer, TJ, and Everley. In July of 2015 her and moved to Lewisville, Texas where they lived until May of 2017 when they moved to Frisco and became part of Trevin and Jenny’s household. Since then she makes rag quilts with two burp cloths for the NICU units at hospitals.
Trent and Kourtney live in Urbandale, IA and have two sons, Julian and Edison. Trent is a chiropractor and Kourtney is in IT computer work.
Travis lives in Waukee, IA and is a massage therapist and assistant shift manager at a fast food establishment. His daughter Abbi and husband Anthony live in Des Moines and have two sons, Henry and Theodore. She finally got to be a great grandmother.
In the spring of 2020 Covid 19 inhabited our land so she began making face masks for everyone including the homeless shelters and children’s hospital. She spent a lot of time at her machine and was happiest doing for others with her Jesus music playing softly as her companion.
She always tried to have a clear sense of right and wrong along with an amazing work ethic. She tried to be an example of how one should try and live their life, making sure every one was taken care of and had enough before she did. She loved doing for others. Faith, hope, and love. The greatest of these is love and she tried to live her life this way. Jesus was her dearest friend. She always prayed when her race was run ,her song was sung, and her work on earth was done, would she have to wonder if she made a difference in somebody’s life. She prayed to God she did. She felt the words we leave behind will be a lasting picture of who we are.
Her family, her faith, her never knowing a stranger, and her compassion for others guided her life. She was the glue that held the family together. She cherished her family and was a proud mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt. When asked how she was, she always responded with I’m blessed! She tried to be a beacon of light for all to see. Her church was a very important part of her life and her day always began with a bible study. She went through the Alpha Bible study and retreat and a Care Core class and ministry so she could minister to others in need. She had a deep and abiding faith with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her soulmate, Dan West, her three sons Trent (Kourntney), Travis, and Trevin (Jenny), six grand children (Abbi, Summer, TJ, Everley, Julian, and Edison), two great grandchildren (Henry & Theodore Bock), nieces & nephews (Carlotto & John Eischens, Rock & Kari Hauser, Ryan & Jen Hauser, Carmen & Scott Kieffer, Shane Hauser & Amy Shalla, Stephani Locket, and Melissa & Hugh Barrett), sisters Helene Stafford and Catherine Barksdale, and brother Alan Haller. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl & Connie Larson, sisters Ella, Anne, Beverley, Barbara, Mary Lou, and Carla and brothers Robert, George, James, and William Carl.
