Ladies and gentlemen,
We gather here today to celebrate the life and memory of a truly exceptional person, Jim Fuller. As we mourn his passing, let us also reflect on the abundant joy and inspiration that he brought to each one of us, and the mark he left on our world.
I first met Jim back in 1974 at the student center of Mesa Community College. It seemed like any other ordinary day, as we both found ourselves playing pool in that lively, bustling space we would come to call a haven for unforgettable friendships. Little did I know that simple game would be the beginning of a lifelong bond, not only between Jim and myself, but also with the lovely Sandy and our dear friend, Dave Cone.

Those early years, spent in the stunning landscapes of Grand Junction, were some of the happiest days of my life, and that is largely thanks to Jim. Together, we skied down powdered slopes and rode our bikes along winding trails. We set up camp under vast, starlit skies and fished in the still, clear waters of the Mesa. We shot at targets, sharing both the exhilaration of a perfect aim and laughter when our bullets whizzed hopelessly off course.
Through it all, Jim was an unwavering source of happiness and inspiration. Jim was a truly selfless person, always putting others before himself. He showed immense love and respect for his family and friends—always showering us with warmth, encouragement, and support. He genuinely cared for the well-being of those around him, and his vibrant presence could often dissolve any sorrow or fears we faced.
Jim faced his own fears with courage and faith, particularly during the last few months of his life. The grace with which he confronted terminal cancer was a testament to his unyielding inner strength, and his ability to find solace and hope in faith.
As we remember Jim's inspiring spirit, let us reflect on what the 23rd Psalm meant to him, and how it comforted him during his final journey:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Just like the prisoners of war who held onto their faith in the face of uncertainty and suffering, Jim embraced this powerful verse as he bravely walked through the valley of the shadow of death. His faith carried him through the darkest of times, and reminded us all of the light that can be found even in the most difficult moments.
We will always remember Jim for the kind and caring person he was. He was a true friend, a loving father and grandfather, and a steadfast companion in life's journey. May you rest in peace, Jim, knowing that you are forever in our hearts and memories.
Thank you for being a part of our lives, and reminding us to cherish each moment, to love one another, and to keep faith in the face of adversity. You will be dearly missed, Jim Fuller. Rest in peace, dear friend.
