Departed: 05/10/2024 (Old Fort)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Carroll Adolphus Stevens reunited with his beloved wife of 65 years, Margaret Shope Stevens, in Heaven, after nearly 10 years apart. He passed at the age of 98, with his loving family by his side, at Rose Hill Retirement Community. Carroll was born in McDowell County on September 1, 1925 to the late Roy Melvin Stevens and Sudie Hensley Stevens.
In addition to his wife and parents, Carroll was also welcomed into Heaven by two sons, Lynn and Eddie Stevens; grandson, Christopher Moore; and siblings, Bernice Fox, Texie Stevens, Beulah Robertson, Mildred Moore, Ray Stevens, Betty Lou Lunsford, Faye Lovyne Burgin and infant Gene Stevens.
Carroll served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater on Guam during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He began his career by driving a bus with other workers from Old Fort to Beacon Manufacturing in Swannanoa, where he served as a card tender in the weaving room. After the war, he returned to Beacon where he met his wife, Margaret, and pursued schooling to become an electrician. Throughout his career, he remained in maintenance roles. In 1952, he transitioned to Old Fort Finishing as an electrician. Over the course of 40 plus years, he rose to supervise the department, overseeing the plant's closure and asset disposal. Many young men he worked with considered him a mentor and father figure. Carroll later worked for Guildford Mills in Greensboro, NC, and managed the McDowell Convenience Center on Mud Cut Road. In the 1960s, he served as Constable in the Crooked Creek district of Old Fort. Additionally, he ran a sporting goods store from his garage in the 1980s, sharing his passion for hunting, guns, Case knives, and dogs.
Carroll was an enthusiastic coon hunter and lifelong lover of dogs, the outdoors, and sports. He relished the first tomatoes of the season and had hunting stories for every corner of the area where he had hunted for over 60 years. Panthers football, Braves baseball, and UNC basketball were his favorite teams, providing year-round entertainment as he grew older. Every family gathering concluded with his signature phrase, "I really enjoyed that." His storytelling prowess, marked by pauses, gestures, twinkling eyes, and laughter, often had listeners laughing before the story even began. Having lived through the Depression, Carroll held a deep interest in politics and remained a dedicated Democrat his entire life. He was also a proud member of the Joppa Lodge in Old Fort for over 50 years. He was a proud and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who know and love him.
Surviving Carroll are his two children, Gayle Stevens Bishop (Fred) and James “Randy” Stevens (Margaret) both of Old Fort; sister, Devue “Dee” Stevens of Mountain Ridge in Black Mountain; four grandchildren, Jamie Stevens (Kasey), Desarae Kirkpatrick (Nick), Sabrina Stevens, and Blake Stevens; and two great granddaughters, Kaley Kirkpatrick and Lillie Stevens..

Dale was born July 30, 1952, in McDowell County, NC to the late Dale Edward Robinson, Sr. and Mary Wilson Robinson. Dale will be remembered for his love of classic cars, his storytelling and sports. His infatuation with cars started at an early age with $2.00 model car kits from Roses in Marion to two cars that sit in his organized and spotless garage.
He thoroughly enjoyed restoring and handcrafting his 1935 Chevrolet Master Deluxe Sedan, which was just a few tasks away from being road ready. Coach Griffin called him "Johnny Hustle". When it came to basketball, he was all in. He loved playing and it showed.
He was a friend to all who met him: always quick with a joke and he could entertain you for hours with his stories. When not working on, or showing, cars he enjoyed playing golf. He became an avid and talented golfer as an adult playing every chance he got.

Margaret Epley Robinson - March 02, 1938 - April 03, 2023

Departed: 04/03/2023 (Old Fort)
Obituary Preview: On April 3rd, 2023, at 4:00 in the afternoon, our Heavenly Father sent his angels to come and take my beautiful mother, Margaret Epley Robinson, to her heavenly home. Moma was very sick, and very tired, and God saw that. Her body is healed, and she will never know pain or sickness again.
Moma was born on March 2nd, 1938, to Roy and Katie Epley. In 1956 she graduated from Marion High School and in 1959 she married the love of her life, my precious Daddy, John Robinson. They embarked on a journey of love and devotion to each other for 40 years. After Daddy passed away in 1999, Moma became an in-home health care aide. It was a job she loved. After 20 years, we finally convinced her to retire. She stayed active for several years until her heart started to get tired. Ultimately, congestive heart failure took her life.
In addition to her parents and the love of her life, John, Moma is preceded in death her brother Clifton Epley. She leaves behind....but takes with her the love of her daughter, Janice Leigh Morris and her husband David Morris whom she adored, and the one who was her and Daddy's world, her grandson, Jon-Michael. She is also survived by two brothers Charles Epley and Kenneth Epley; three sisters, Pat Ward, Dianne Hollar, and Elaine Harris; a very special niece Darlene Wood; and several other nieces and nephews whom she loved.
In abiding by Moma's wishes, we have planned a small, private graveside service which will be led by a very dear family friend, James Mace.
Moma, Daddy has been waiting to see your beautiful face again for 23 years. When you walked through Heaven's Beautiful Gates, he was there waiting for you with a cup of hot coffee in his hand...just for you. I picture you taking that coffee, and then Daddy takes your hand, and together you go find a beautiful bench in one of God's beautiful gardens by a river. The sunshine is beyond anything I can imagine and there is where you and Daddy sit, catching up on the last 23 years.
I'll see you soon Moma. I will see you both soon. I love you.
