E. Ann Sheridan - February 17, 1934 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Salem)
Obituary Preview: WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - E. Ann Sheridan of West Springfield, Mass., a longtime professor and dean emerita at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, passed away on Tuesday, March 26 at Baystate Medical Center after a short illness. Just last month, more than 80 family members, friends and former colleagues gathered to honor her on the occasion of her 90th birthday, a wonderful day of celebration that she felt was one of the most memorable days of her life. Ann relished her independence and lived in her home in West Springfield for nearly 60 years. Her life was full of love, friendship, and people who adored her. She delighted in the company of others, whether it was attending professional or family events, visiting with friends, sharing a meal or celebratory occasion, or seeing a show at the Majestic Theater in West Springfield. In spite of many trials and tribulations over the years, her enthusiasm for life was indefatigable.
Ann was the eldest child of Eva C. (Lambert) Sheridan and John J. Sheridan. She was born in Lawrence, Mass. and raised in Salem, Mass. and educated there at St. Mary’s Grammar School and St. James High School. Throughout her life, she maintained a love for Forest River Park where she and her siblings swam, skated, sledded, and enjoyed climbing on a replica of the ship Arbella which brought John Winthrop and other founding Puritans from England to Salem in 1630. To commemorate her family’s love of Forest River Park and its importance in their lives, a family bench was installed there last year overlooking the harbor. Her parents’ belief in the value of education informed Ann’s lifelong pursuit of scholarship. During her senior year of high school, she was accepted at the Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in Boston and received a diocesan scholarship. After licensure and several years as a staff nurse in pediatrics, she completed a baccalaureate degree in nursing at Boston College. She worked in many Boston hospitals, including Boston City Hospital during the polio epidemic caring for patients requiring “iron lung” machines for breathing. Ann also cared for John Collins, a future mayor of Boston, shortly after he contracted polio in 1955; he ran for Boston City Council from his hospital room.
After returning to Salem, Ann became a faculty member at Salem Hospital and supervisor of the pediatric unit, where she provided guidance and leadership to staff nurses while also caring for children. This experience had a profound impact and fostered in her a need to expand knowledge in professional nursing practice. She pursued a master of science degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, certification as a pediatric nurse practitioner from the University of Wisconsin, and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She worked in hospitals in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and California before accepting an offer to teach at the UMass Amherst College of Nursing.
Ann was predeceased by her parents, the love of her life, George L. Balestri, of West Springfield, her adoring sisters, Alice C. Saben of Bradford, Mass., Claire F. Fosberry of Gloucester, Mass., Marion L. Rudolph of Peabody, Mass., and her brothers, John J. Sheridan Jr. and Thomas J. Sheridan of Salem. Between Ann’s and George’s large families, her survivors include many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grand nieces and nephews, dear friends, and her cherished colleague and friend of more than 50 years, Karen Johnson of Scarborough, Maine. Ann was devoted to her family and friends and was always present for important milestones. She loved attending family get-togethers and sitting around the table after a delicious meal in the company of others talking about current events and staying abreast of what was going on in loved ones’ lives. She was a fierce friend, a dedicated colleague, and shared her abundant wisdom freely.
She left a lasting impact on anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her whether it was her mail carrier, a former student, or family member or friend. Anyone who knew Ann was touched above all by her love, kindness and how much she truly cared. She and George traveled extensively, visiting France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Scotland for the British Open, and throughout the United States, always with George’s golf clubs in tow. She was a great sport and never said no to an adventure such as when she and George participated in the last public skate at the Coliseum in West Springfield. This is the legendary rink upon which George and his brothers and all the other excellent hockey players from their Italian neighborhood learned to ply their craft. Ann was a valued member of that community.
Dr. Sheridan was a renowned leader, nurse educator, and faculty member at the UMass Amherst College of Nursing, the first public undergraduate nursing education program in the state, from 1965-1998. Her commitment to the nursing profession was matched by her enduring dedication to the college, and until her passing, that dedication never waned. She was instrumental in establishing the Beta Zeta at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and was a founding member of the UMass Amherst College of Nursing Alumni Board. She authored a chapter for a leading textbook on pediatric nursing and, passionate about archiving nursing history, she compiled at least two historical documents and one book about UMass’ College of Nursing. In February 2022, the nursing collection archives, preserving the history of the nursing school, was dedicated in her honor. Over the years, she also served in many leadership roles and as a delegate to the American Nurses Association, including serving as chair of the Committee of Examiners of the ANA to create the first certification examination for pediatric nurse practitioners. In retirement, she was active in pursuing honorary veteran status for nurses who served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II, penning articles for the local newspaper and working with Congressman Richard Neal’s office to pursue that recognition.
To express his admiration and appreciation for her scholarship and dedication to the nursing profession, George, who was always by her side and considered an honorary member of the UMass Amherst nursing community, bequeathed an endowed scholarship in Ann’s name to support undergraduate nursing students inspired to pursue pediatric nursing.
For her many achievements, Dr. Sheridan received the prestigious Chancellor’s Medal, the highest award given in recognition of service to UMass. She also received the ANA’s Massachusetts Living Legend Award at a gala event, at which all of her sisters were in attendance. She assumed the role of dean of the UMass Amherst College of Nursing from 1986-1988, and upon her retirement in 1998 after 35 years of service, she was designated professor and dean emerita. During her tenure, Dr. Sheridan mentored thousands of students and colleagues to be the best nurses they can be. At her recent birthday celebration, Ann was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the president of the University of Massachusetts for her service and commitment to the field of nursing and nursing education.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass celebrating Ann and her life will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Salem, Mass., on Saturday, April 13th. Ann Sheridan Scholarship at the UMass Amherst Marieb College of Nursing for nursing students passionate about pediatric nursing. Loved ones may also choose to provide support to establish the Dr. E. Ann Sheridan Faculty Mentorship Award. Dr. Sheridan’s impact on nursing education and her commitment to mentorship will be honored through this annual award to an outstanding UMass Amherst Marieb College of Nursing faculty member whose mentorship and guidance are emblematic of Dr. Sheridan’s legacy. Checks should be made out to the UMass Amherst Foundation indicating which fund you would like to support.
