Margaret Kuhlmann Onstad - March 17, 1947 - March 28, 2022

Departed: 03/28/2022 (Great Falls)
Obituary Preview: Margaret “Peggy” Kuhlmann Onstad was born on March 17, 1947, in Minneapolis, to Eugene and Cecelia Kuhlmann. The youngest of four, after Katherine, John and Stephen, she had an ideal post-WWII childhood, with her father working for Honeywell and her mother raising the family. Summer vacations were spent at the family cabin at Bay Lake.
In 1955, the family moved to Billings to help her recently widowed aunt, Agnes O’Leary, run Barry O’Leary General Contractors. Margaret attended Fratt Elementary School, where she discovered her love of the organ by becoming a church organist in the 7th grade. She attended Billings Central Catholic High School, where she remained active in music and was prom queen in her graduating year of 1965. She then moved to Great Falls to pursue her calling of care, graduating in the final class of the Columbus School of Nursing in 1967.
She met the love of her life, Carlin Onstad, at the King’s Hill ski area. Carlin took notice of a pretty lady in purple pants skiing by, and he was introduced by a friend who was married to Margaret’s nursing instructor. That evening, Margaret and Carlin sat in front of the fireplace at the Cub’s Den in Monarch and their journey began.
They were married in July 1968 and moved to the family farm north of Carter. They raised four sons, Michael, Patrick, Vincent, and Peter—an accomplishment in itself. Margaret loved the farming community and became active in the Montana Polled Hereford Association as the Women’s Auxiliary president. She was a leader for the Stir, Stitch and Stirrup 4-H Club and the church organist in Fort Benton. She found her artistic self in pottery and studied under accomplished artists. She soon had her own studio and kiln at the farm and started Prairie Pots, where she sold her craft.
A true Montana woman, Margaret loved the outdoors, especially hiking the trails of Glacier Park, camping, skiing, waterskiing and horseback riding on the Kuhlmann family ranch in Billings. But most of all Margaret loved people. Family and friends, old and new, were so important to her. She joined the quick response unit for Chouteau County as a first responder, then furthered her calling as a home hospice nurse, short-stay unit nurse, and then hospice nurse at Peace Hospice of Montana.
After Carlin passed in 2001, Margaret continued her love of the mountains, finding seldom-traveled roads and beautiful spots where she would hike, fish, and take many pictures that she loved to share. She also remained active in the community by serving in her parish council’s grief support group and on multiple boards, including Giant Springs Heritage State Park and Preservation Cascade Inc., which is overseeing restoration of Great Falls’ historic 10th Street Bridge.
On March 12, on her way to a day of skiing, Margaret suffered a major stroke. She passed away on March 28 at Peace Hospice of Montana, where she had dedicated so many years of her life serving others.
Margaret was preceded in death by her brother, John; sister, Katherine Aanes; and her true love, Carlin. She is survived by her four beloved sons; brother, Stephen, with whom she shared a special bond; four grandchildren, Carlin, Chloe, Avery, and Leo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Toni Arlene Lewis - October 05, 1951 - March 13, 2022

Departed: 03/13/2022 (Great Falls)
Obituary Preview: Toni Arlene Lewis, 70, of Augusta, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2022.
A memorial service will be held this summer in Oregon.
Toni was born on October 5, 1951, in Seattle, Washington to Charlie Puzzo and Margee (Hoyt) Hudson. After graduating high school and while raising her family as a single mom, she attended Knapp College and obtained her certification as a legal secretary. After her children were grown (mostly), she followed her true passion. She studied and worked hard and became an herbalist. Toni used these skills and passion for helping others. She successfully treated so many that she was affectionately called “Auntie Rescue.” Her other passion was caring for children and adults with special needs. She was such a champion for people with developmental disabilities that she felt called to open a group home for adults with the dual diagnoses of developmental disabilities with violent tendencies that were a challenge to find other placement for them.
As a product of the 60s, she was a true flower child and hippie. Organizations weren’t her thing, but that didn’t stop her from leading the charge when she recognized a need or a cause that could use her help. For fun, she volunteered her services as an editor for fan fiction. You could frequently find her with a puzzle book or finding other ways to challenge herself.
Toni was an avid reader and very well read. Her other hobbies included, continually educating herself on new and interesting topics. It wasn’t unusual for her to announce a new interest to try and some of these interests graduated into hobbies for her. For example, soap making or candy making. She loved all things about nature and prided herself on her flower garden, where she spent much of her time. Toni’s heart was in spending time with her 10 grandchildren. She shined in the kitchen teaching them to cook and bake.
She was a faithful and loyal friend with her most precious friendships spanning a lifetime. Some of her most cherished friends include Terrie, Denise, Cheryl, and Gail to name a few, and countless others who loved her dearly.
Toni – Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, and Friend you will be dearly missed. Some of her last words, “The Lord has me.” Until we meet again.
She is survived by her daughters, Rachel Anne (Jesse Sr.) Hedrick and Cala Maynette Lewis; son, Joshua Daniel (Susan) Lewis; sisters, Suzi (Bud) Ledbetter, Annie (Dave) Duval, Dona (Dan) Ditton, and Melody Fawcett; brother, Lynn (Kim) Querry; 10 grandchildren, Greggory, Cassandra, Michael, Isabella, Kaitlin, Jesse Jr., Kenneth, Rebekah, Brianna, and Katy; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mom, Margee and brother, Robert.

George James Mumm - January 06, 1953 - February 18, 2022

Departed: 02/18/2022 (Great Falls)
Obituary Preview: George James Mumm, proud American and veteran of the Armed Services, passed away February 18, 2022, just as he had lived his life – on his own terms. George was 69 years old.
George was the youngest child of Leo and Myrtle (Paulson) Mumm. Born in Conrad, MT on January 6, 1953, he grew up with his 7 siblings on the family farm in Brady, MT and attended Brady public schools. Daily farm chores laid the foundation for his admirable work ethic. Never a fan of a schoolbook, but a believer in his country and a hard day’s work, George joined the Army in 1972 and served for two years. He honed his skills in auto mechanics and body work and opened his own shop. He was later encouraged to join the Montana Air National Guard by his dear friend, Garry Cameron.
He served with the 120th Security Forces Squadron from 1980 until his retirement as a Senior Master Sergeant in 2006. He was a great mentor and role model to numerous airmen and was respected for his stern but equitable leadership and commitment to excellence. He made the best friendships of his life and found his second family in his fellow guardsmen. George took great pride in his years of devoted service to his country. A true patriot, he saw the eagle as the true symbol of freedom and had a treasured collection of eagle memorabilia.
George married Julie Martin in 1973 and they had three beautiful daughters – LaBerta Marie, Bobbie Jo, and Glenda Lynn. After their divorce he remained a dedicated father. In 1989, he was set-up on a date with the mother of LaBerta’s classmate and two weeks later was engaged. He and Darlene built a beautiful life together, sharing a passion for snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, camping, and fishing. George bravely took on a household of girls, fulfilling the role of stepdad to Melanie and Diedra better than most any man. He and Darlene celebrated 32 years of marriage last September 2, 2021.
To put it simply, George was one of the good guys. He gave a firm handshake, said what he meant, and gave his word with complete sincerity. He taught his girls to think for themselves, value a dollar, know personal responsibility, the appreciation of the outdoors and how to change the oil in their cars. His favorite place was beside a campfire with a strong drink in hand. He liked a good joke and was famous for his “Georgeisms” such as “Use your head for something besides a hat rack” – little bits of life advice usually started and stopped with a chuckle. He was a firm believer in doing it right the first time. He had worked hard for the things he had in life and made sure to take exceptional care of his home and belongings. In 1995, he and Darlene moved to Sun Prairie where he could finally build the shop of his dreams. It was his haven, and he carefully organized every item, down to the nuts and bolts.

Departed: 02/17/2022 (Great Falls)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Louise Chrisman passed away on Thursday February 17, 2022, at Peace Hospice with her family at her side.
Dorothy was born on March 13,1935, in Detroit, Michigan to Alma (Radtke) and Peter Winnen. She was number four of their five children. They lived in the small town of Utica, Michigan. She went to school and worked in the area for many years.
In 1953, she met and married William Chrisman from Murray, Kentucky. They had four children and lots of fun during their 68 years together. In 1963, they loaded up the kids and moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts. A couple years later back to Michigan, then in 1972 off to live in Sunnymead, California.
Dorothy worked for the Moreno Valley School District for 17 years. She retired as Central Kitchen Manager. Mom and Dad then took to the open road in their RV and traveled the country for 7 years. They loved the travel and made new friends along the way. Then it was back to California and finally moved to Great Falls, MT in 2012.
Mom loved to cook and bake. She liked to be active – she enjoyed walking, water aerobics, bike riding, corn hole, and other outdoor activities. She also loved to play cards, and we teased that cleaning was her favorite hobby.
We appreciate David Brost and the nurses at the Sletten Cancer Center. They were always kind and helpful during Mom’s years of treatment there.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, William; son, William (Cora) Chrisman Jr. of Fayetteville, GA; daughters, Renee (David) Parmenter and Robin (Doug) Bliler of Great Falls; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Edna Marie (Croff) Maki - September 12, 1926 - February 13, 2022

Departed: 02/13/2022 (Great Falls)
Obituary Preview: Our hearts are broken, but our mom had a long life and has reunited with the love of her life, Henry R. Maki on February 13, 2022.
Edna Croff Maki, 95, was born on September 12, 1926, the first child of Ilona (Gladys) Luoma Croff and James William Croff, Jr. in Belt, MT. She was joined later by brother, Don and sister, Joyce. She lived her entire life in the Geyser, Raynesford, Stanford, and the Belt area. As a child of the Depression Era, she was very resourceful and learned at a very young age to care for livestock, ride, garden, cook, with the attitude of always giving your best. Those challenging times taught her to appreciate and cherish those moments with loved ones. Her early education started at the Lone Tree country school by Geyser, grade school years were completed by attending Geyser and Raynesford Schools, depending what farm they were on, or what relative she and her siblings would live with if their parents were working out of the area or snowed in. Her high school years were all at Belt Valley High graduating in 1946. She went on to earn her teaching certificate and was assigned the Nelson School in the Highwood Mountains area. She was the jack of all trades besides teaching and living in the teacherage. She had contact with several students through her life. Mom met Dad, the handsome cowboy back from WWII and ranching in the Highwoods through his younger brother, George at a dance in Belt. Dad would ride over the mountain or ski to see Mom at the school. The stars and moon aligned, and they married February 27, 1948, in Great Falls, followed by a lively dance at the Willow Bend School with locals providing the music.
By 1957, five of the six children were born, and they moved from the Highwoods to a ranch between Belt and Raynesford. Life on Otter Creek was chaotic with now six kids, cousins, and many, many friends visiting constantly. When ranch work wasn’t on the agenda or school and extra curriculars, our rambunctious crew found ways to try and kill ourselves, due to fast cars, horses, motorcycles, airplanes, parachutes, rattlesnakes, or other adventurous stupidity. Mom continued to be the greatest mom and learned to choose her battles between the mud, animal hair, cow manure, breaks, and bruises. She was first cheerleader for her children and grandchildren’s academic and sports accomplishments. She was resilient through sons in the war, a dedicated caregiver to her son, death of family members, and still giving comfort and hope for some not as lucky. She had a soft heart and was notorious for bringing in strays, two and four legged. Recently she was asked what she missed most about her younger days, without hesitation, “Wearing high heels!” She and Dad would dance in the kitchen or at parties, she loved Elvis, Patsy Cline, Beach Boys, and Hank Williams Sr. Many card game nights with neighbors and friends filled the years, plus infinite pots of coffee. We will forever love her pies, potato salads, chokecherry syrup, Finn bread, and to die for cinnamon rolls. To this day we are still amazed how she could wear out a deck of cards playing solitaire! Crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, tending to her flowers, watching classic movies, and attending family celebrations filled her later years.
She is survived by her children, Roger (Jan), Randy, Ray, Rebecca (Jeff) Maki-Loney, and Richard (Sharon) Maki; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jim)Watson, Rachel (Lance) Mostad, Erin (Kelly)Valdivia, Tracy Kellenberger (Shanon Jordan), Brandy (Mike) Moreta, Salone (Jordan) Loney Culbreath, Hillary Loney (Tyler Michalies), and Mariah Schwartz (Lance Storm); step-grandchildren, Kerri Asleson (James Harkins), Cristy (JT) Stengrimson, Evan (Jordy) Asleson, Jeff (Marissa Guerrero) Weis, Mike (Laura) Weis, John Weis, and Karl Kellenberger; son-in-law, Dean Rosen; best friends, sister Joyce Douglas and brother, Don Croff (Zelda); sister-in-law, Bobbin Maki; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends; and her fur babies, TomTom and Shadow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; daughter, Ruth Elaine Rosen; grandsons, Ryan Chadwick and Roscoe Maki; and step-granddaughter, Cindy Asleson.
We are so grateful for the kind words from so many friends and family, especially to our cousins; the Croff Girls, Cori McBride, Peggy Hill, Debbie Robinson, Jan Griffin, Sherrie Smith, and Donna Benbow for their love and dedication to her.

Donald Gene Rivera - August 03, 1954 - February 10, 2022

Departed: 02/10/2022 (Great Falls)
Obituary Preview: Donald Gene Rivera, 67, of Great Falls, MT, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022, while surrounded by the love of his life and his children. Honoring Don’s request not to have a funeral, a celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
Don was born on August 3, 1954, to Louis and Marie (Palagi) Rivera, in Great Falls, Montana. Don spent his whole life in Great Falls, graduating from Great Falls High School in 1972. Don—better known as Donnie to anyone he met through his work in the automotive industry—found his niche while working for his father at Riverside Automotive & Machine, staying at Automotive Machine for 25 years before finding his true home at NAPA in 2005, where he worked as an outside salesman. The 16-plus years Don worked for Mark Doll and Wally Thormahlen were the best years of his working life, driving around visiting his customers, solving their problems, and B.S.ing with his wide circle of automotive friends.
After a brief marriage right after high school to Cindy Ramsted, Don met Deborah “Debbie” Blalock and they fell in love, marrying in August 1979. Years later, Don shared that he didn’t really want to have children of his own but was thankful that God had other plans for him. He found his true calling when Amber was born in January of 1980. Don was a natural dad who was also happy to welcome Kelly in March of 1982 and Brittney in December of 1984. After his separation and subsequent divorce from Debbie, Don continued to be a remarkable dad, never allowing his children to see the struggles he surely endured as a single parent. Looking back, Amber, Kelly, and Brittney don’t feel as though there was ever a time when they didn’t have everything they ever needed—and more. Don was, unquestionably, the best dad ever. On September 3, 1993, Don was lucky enough to marry the love of his life, Denise (Messman) Rivera, gaining two more daughters, Rani and Rachel. A short time later, they added Tasha to their brood. Their beautiful life together often resembled an extended episode of The Brady Bunch. Six kids meant a lot of activities, and the family traveled frequently for sporting events. Don was always there to support and coach them in everything from soccer, football, and volleyball to softball, wrestling, and BMX. His commanding voice was a constant presence at their events, cheering them on. Anyone involved in BMX during the many years his kids raced will remember his deep bass booming across the track: Riders Ready? Pedals Set? GATE!
As the kids grew up, Don and Denise were able to enjoy their empty nest, though whenever any of their children needed extra support, Don would say, “This will always be your home,” and he and Denise welcomed them for however long they needed to stay. He was always available to help the kids whenever they needed anything, whether they had vehicle trouble, needed his muscle to move something, or wanted his expertise to fix a recipe. If they called on him, he was there.
Over the past nearly 29 years, Don and Denise (affectionately referred to as his travel agent) were lucky enough to enjoy many vacations together to Glacier Park, Mexico, Belize, Alaska, the Grand Canyon, North Carolina, Boston and Cape Cod, Las Vegas, and their favorite place on Earth (other than Great Falls), Hawaii—particularly Maui during whale season. Additionally, sharing a love of all things music, Don and Denise attended countless concerts together, once being referred to as the hippest parents ever.
In 2004, Don gained his proudest title, Grandpa, when Kelly welcomed his first child. Over the next 16 years, he was blessed with 15 more grandchildren. Before long, Don could once again be found at all kinds of sporting events, cheering loudly, always his grandkids’ biggest fan. Those who knew Don knew that one of his favorite things in life was family night, when he and Denise welcomed any combination of children and grandchildren, sometimes having as many as 30 people over for dinner, drinks, and a (far too loud) gab fest. He was incredibly thankful to have his entire family in one town. Don was, unquestionably, the best grandpa ever.
Don had many hobbies and interests that brought joy to his life. His gardens—particularly his annual tomato garden—were always tended to meticulously in hopes he’d have an abundant crop to share with his children and friends. Cooking wasn’t rocket science, as he’d say, but those who were lucky enough to eat anything he made would insist he was, indeed, a culinary scientist. Don loved planning an annual Christmas cookie day for the grandkids to make and decorate cookies for Santa. He looked forward to the annual trip to Seeley Lake to spend the week on the beach reading with his wife, chatting and drinking with his children, and playing in the water and sand with his grandchildren. Also, Don never encountered a gun raffle ticket he didn’t want to buy.
We will forever find comfort in memories of Don—our husband, our dad, our grandpa—and the knowledge that he is spending his time with his beloved golden retriever, Lucky; hunting and drinking with his son-in-law Damon; and likely getting into more than his fair share of trouble with his brother, Denny.
Don is survived by the love of his life, Denise; daughter Amber Rivera Heck and her children Kylor, Kason, Khloe, and Koroa; son Kelly Rivera (Victoria Torrez) and their children Caprianna, Carter, and Cazdyn; daughter Brittney (Justin) de la Garza and their children Landon, Paydon, and Madilyn; daughter Tasha (Brandon) Hueth and their children Hinsley, Ryott, Dehlylah-Rae, and Verity-Jean; daughter Rachel (Kelvin) Bateman and their children Connor and Holden; daughter Rani Blalock, bonus daughter Shannon Quinn, and their cats Lucy and Linus; former father-in-law Papa Jule Blalock; numerous sisters and brothers, both by birth and by marriage; and many nieces and nephews.
