Kelly L. Washington Jr. - January 19, 1934 - May 05, 2024

Departed: 05/05/2024 (Houston)
Obituary Preview: Kelly L. Washington Jr. was born January 19, 1934, in Kittrell, Texas. His parents were Kelley Leggett Washington Sr. (he was known as K.L.) and Howie B. Clemons, who were both educators. Kelly has three sisters: Artye LaVelle Franklin (preceded in death), Dr. Howie DeLane, and Alpha Omega Jones. His sisters affectionately called him “Brother“ and later in life he became known in the community as Bro. Washington or Bro. K. L.
He attended school in Trinity, Texas. He was close with his grandfather Wyatt Clemons, who taught him farming techniques, how to care for animals, and construction. He was also close with his father and mother from whom he gained a passion for education. While growing up, most Sunday mornings you would see him walking to and from church with his family. At the age of 15, in addition to working on the family farm, his first job was washing dishes at a local café for $17.50 a week. He was the valedictorian of his class, graduating at the age of 17.
In 1951 he enlisted in the Air Force and served four years. His actual name on his birth certificate is K.L. Washington Jr., but when he enlisted in the Air Force, they told him, “K.L. has to stand for something”. Since his father’s original name was Kelley Leggett Washington he began to bear that name. His military career began in San Antonio, Texas, and extended to Wyoming, Alaska, and Arizona. He served as a teletype operator and a medic during his military career. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force as a staff sergeant in 1955. He saved his money while in the military and bought his first car, a 1955 four-door Chevrolet. While driving back to Texas, after leaving the Air Force one night, he had an accident and hit a tree and totaled his brand-new car. God blessed him in that incident because he was ejected out of the rear window and only sustained a cut on his thumb.
After leaving the Air Force in 1955 he moved to Houston, Texas, where he placed his membership and began worshiping at Third Ward Church of Christ. He enrolled in Texas Southern University and graduated with a degree in Chemistry, and during that time he worked at the Old Negro Hospital (now known as Riverside General Hospital), as a laboratory technician.
In February 1958 he married Effie Young, (preceded in death), and they had five children: Thalia Jones (preceded in death) married to Roy Jones, Naomi Washington, Kelly L. Washington III, Val Washington, and Kyle Washington. In 1976 he began building his forever home with his wife Effie. It took them two years to complete this dream and 5011 Redbud became the address of the family’s home in July 1978. He lived in the house he built for nearly 46 years. He has nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Throughout his life he held many roles. He was a postal carrier, high school math teacher, a Licensed Vocational Nurse, and an entrepreneur (in the ‘70s he owned a janitorial service and in the ‘80s he owned a daycare center); but his greatest work and passion was preaching the Gospel of Christ, as evidenced in his Christian chronicles: 1962 - established a congregation in Cleveland, Texas; 1965 - became Minister of the Northside Church of Christ in Houston, Texas; 1980 - the Northside Church of Christ merged with North Houston Church of Christ, where he served as Minister and Elder;
January 2000 - established Sunflower Church of Christ in Sunnyside, Houston, Texas.
Over his lifetime of ministry, he baptized many souls, counseled countless couples, and served his community with dignity and respect. He would regularly say to others when ending a conversation or phone call “…preciate ya.” As his chronicles here on earth have ended, we extend a resounding “we appreciate you,” for he was indeed a hard-fighting soldier on the battlefield for God.
