Departed: 05/07/2024 (Roanoke)
Obituary Preview: Michael Dane Morris crossed the finish line on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the home he built in Roanoke, Virginia. Born on October 19, 1953, in Lewisburg, West Virginia, Mike was a longtime resident of Roanoke County. His inspirational life and legacy are deeply interwoven with the Roanoke community, which he loved and served.
He was a graduate of Cave Spring, Virginia Western, and Roanoke College. Although he began his career in sales, he found his true calling when he began doing tax returns with his father in 1982. For over 40 years, he served hundreds of clients as a CPA at his office on Brambleton Avenue, with many becoming dear friends. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family and truly loved what he did.
His life was rich with hobbies, but none more important than the sport of triathlon. Beginning with his first race in 1985, Mike completed more than 300 triathlons, including events in all 50 states and four continents. He competed in Ironmans, marathons, and proudly represented Team USA at events across the globe. He was passionate about the endurance community and loved giving back by organizing races and events. He was especially proud of founding the annual Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon and his Christmas Eve 5k. When his children were young, he spent many happy, heartfelt years coaching them in a wide range of sports.
Mike had a lifelong drive to challenge himself. He hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro and completed the Virginia section of the Appalachian Trail. He discovered a passion for art through rock sculpture, wood carving, stained glass, and photography, participating in art shows and galleries throughout the Commonwealth.
Despite his many accomplishments, his greatest joy was as a father and grandfather. His memory is honored and kept alive through the love of his wife of 45 years, his three children, and his eight beautiful grandchildren.
As a tribute to a man who loved the Roanoke Valley and the outdoors, in lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in his honor. Memorial donations may be made to the Life Ring Foundation: Fighting Kids Cancer initiative, which serves Southwest Virginia. Although a formal service will not be held, a celebration of his life is pending.
We wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from all of Mike’s friends, as well as the care and kindness of Dr. Andrew Fintel and the Blue Ridge Cancer Center.

Virginia May Boitnott - May 23, 1930 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Roanoke)
Obituary Preview: Virginia May Boitnott, 93, of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully at Our Lady of The Valley Nursing Home on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
“Jennie” was born in Callaway, Va., in a large family filled with love and hard work. She and her siblings helped the family live on what the mountain and the Good Lord provided. After marriage to her beloved husband, Wendell, she moved to Naff’s Community in Boones Mill, Va., where she worked alongside him growing apples for Boitnott Brothers Orchards for more than 50 years, until Wendell’s passing in 2002. She was truly the epitome of the Bible’s Proverbs 31 wife and mother.
Jennie, a talented and avid gardener, was passionate about growing vegetables and flowers, especially irises, dahlias, and award-winning-sized pumpkins. She generously shared her produce with family and friends. She prepared a garden every year until her death.
Jennie always had an open home for her neighbors. Many of the children of Naff’s Community over the years considered her as their "other mother.” She would indulge her own grandchildren to play in the creek, as well as teach them how to work in the garden. She considered laughter as the best medicine and said that we don’t stop laughing as we get old, but we get old when we stop laughing.
Jennie is survived by her brother, Samuel Holt (Joice); daughter, Elizabeth ‘Betsy” Dennis; her son, Chris Boitnott (Jennifer); her grandchildren, Justin Boitnott (Kelli), Rachel Atkinson (Kelly), Lydia Boitnott, and Isabella Boitnott; her one great-grandchild, Xavier Boitnott; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Dewey and Elizabeth; three brothers, Alger Holt, Bill Holt, and Maurice Holt; four sisters, Audrey Meador, Mary Wimmer, Nancy Setliff, and Stella Couch; and her son-in-law, Phil Dennis. Jennie loved her Lord Jesus, her family and neighbors, the joy of hard work and the satisfaction of being content with the simple pleasures of life. She loved her mountains and once remarked to someone visiting that had a concern of finding their way back to the main highway, ‘Well, if you’re gonna get lost, at least get lost in the mountains.”
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Oakey’s South Chapel. Mark Warner Williams - October 26, 1970 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Roanoke)
Obituary Preview: Mark Warner Williams, a loving and devoted father and son, died on Friday, April 19, 2024. He was predeceased by his parents, Judy Williams, who died in 2015, and Woodrow “Buddy” Williams, who died in 2017. Mark is survived by his former spouse, Kathryn “Kitty” Wade, with whom he had three children, Luke (28), Adam (24), and Faith (21). He is also survived by his brother, Jody Williams (Lisa), and their three children, Noah, Joshua, and Abigail. Mark had a special relationship with many aunts and uncles including Beth Tucker, Deloris Kiser, Tim Hamlett, and Rhonda Griffith.
Mark was born on October 26, 1970, in Danville, VA. He attended George Washington High School, where he found fulfillment in his academic and musical pursuits. He was a graduate of William and Mary, where he received his bachelor’s of psychology and religion, and of Virginia Tech, where he received his MBA. Most of his career was spent as a credit lender for small businesses, where he developed many friendships, especially during his time at BB&T, First National Bank, and Bank of America. He was particularly proud of his time working at New Hope Support Services in Danville, VA, as a Mental Health Support Specialist, where he worked for a time after moving home to care for his parents, Judy and Buddy.
Mark’s life revolved around his three children. He filled their childhood home with music, and always had a favorite song ready to sing at the perfect moment. He enrolled his children in music lessons and encouraged them to pair their academic and musical pursuits, just as he had. All three children still sing together today, and two went on to pursue undergraduate degrees in music.
In 2017, at the age of 46, Mark was diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus, a neurological condition where a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid puts increased pressure on the brain. Hydrocephalus has no cure, and despite challenges with mobility that persisted through two brain surgeries, Mark proudly participated in the Walk to End Hydrocephalus in Charlotte, NC on October 20, 2018. He also brought awareness to the condition by sharing his story and encouraging others to donate to the Hydrocephalus Association. As it was throughout his life, Mark’s primary concern was the health of his children; he obtained MRIs for all three to rule out the condition.
Much like his mother, Judy, Mark’s greatest joy was traveling the world. Mark helped his kids visit almost all of our country’s 50 states, including three trips to Hawaii. Mark also brought his children abroad to Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. As a solo traveler, Mark developed an affinity for the country of Colombia, where he spent two months in 2023 exploring and developing friendships.
Mark will be remembered by all who knew him for his wit and charming personality, the humor and playfulness he brought to every conversation, his habit of spontaneously breaking into song, the pride he had for his children, the fierce loyalty he kept for his friends… and, above all, his deep love of family.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can help facilitate communication among loved ones, allow people to pay their respects, and provide closure during a difficult time.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. It may also include funeral or memorial service details.

Who writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with crafting the notice. The writer should aim to capture the essence and personality of the person who has passed away.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to gather information, write, and edit the obituary.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find submission guidelines on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the written notice and any required documentation or payment.
