Garry Conklin Cromer - January 15, 1953 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Roanoke)
Obituary Preview: Garry Conklin Cromer departed this life on April 11, 2024.
Garry was born Jan. 15, 1953, to Guy Francis Cromer and Jane Spencer Cromer. Jane insisted on Garry with two R’s, since that’s how Harry, Larry and Barry are spelled.
Guy and Jane’s childhoods were shaped by Great Depression poverty. Their young adulthoods were shaped by World War II, where a teenage Guy served in D-Day. Their great wish was for Garry and his kid sister, Ellen, to grow up in a loving home where they were free to be children.
Garry attended Roanoke City Public Schools from start to finish, beginning with Preston Park Elementary, then Breckinridge Middle School.
He went to William Fleming High School and liked to pretend that his sister, two years behind him, wasn’t someone he knew. He graduated from Fleming in 1971. His dad, who attended Fleming in the Class of 1944, had left before he finished his senior year to go to war. Boy Scouts was a big part of Garry’s youth. Guy led their troop on demanding outdoor adventures, and Garry eventually attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Later, when he once wrote on an application that he had been an Eagle Scout, his father replied, “You are an Eagle Scout.”
Garry went to Madison College, now known as James Madison University, largely because his father always lamented how he didn’t get to go and his mother, quite astoundingly, had earned a college degree. He studied business and worked in sales, but he preferred hunting, fishing, golf and anything else that took him outdoors to sitting in an office. The last time he wore a tie was for his older niece’s wedding more than a decade ago – a Charlie Brown number that had belonged to his dad.
Throughout his life, he remained close to a group of friends from high school. They affectionately called him “Bonehead,” or sometimes “Bone” for short.
Garry was devoted to his parents. When his father became sick with Alzheimer’s, he took time each day to see him or his mother, sometimes both. In those sad times, he was a rock for Jane and did everything he could for her.
Garry enjoyed Harley-Davidson motorcycles. His favorite was named Lucille. At 59, and then at 63, he rode across the U.S., delighting in the beauty of places like Canyonlands National Park in Utah and the Black Hills mountain range in South Dakota. The town of Ten Sleep, Wyo., was his favorite. His trip was inspired by a 9,000-mile road trip that his parents took him and his sister on when he was 10 (by car!).
Photos of his three great-nieces and one great-nephew covered his living room. It made him happy that they carried parts of his own parents’ names in theirs. He enjoyed giving generously to them, delighting in paying for their trips to fun places like children’s museums and trampoline parks.
He is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Ellen Rexrode; brother-in-law, Gary Rexrode; and nieces Gabriel Rexrode and Christina Rexrode.
The family will host a visitation at Oakey’s North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Road in Roanoke, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Obituary Preview: Hilda Francis Meador (Robinson) Weeks of Roanoke, VA quietly slipped through Heaven’s gates on April 11, 2024. She had 94 blessed years on earth and will be sorely missed by her family; sons Richard (Peggy) Robinson, Roger (Janis) Robinson, Mark (Karen) Robinson, Samuel (Nancy) Robinson, and Phillip (Tina DeMatteo) Weeks; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She loved God and was faithful in prayer. She was active in her churches and served the Lord through missions, traveling throughout the southern US and Australia. She enjoyed golf, gardening, family, many friends, and a good card game. Her cooking was second to none. Sunday dinners were epic with food piled high, family, love, laughter, and mayhem.
Hilda was that very special aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Her door was always open with an ear ready for listening.
Hilda was preceded in death by husbands, Robert Andrew Robinson and Burley Edward Weeks; parents, Robert and Bertie Neighbors Meador; brothers, Robert (Dick), Bruce and Burnett and sisters, Lucy, Vida, Iris, Margaret, Eula, Emma and Doris.
The family would like to thank Clara Barone for her friendship and loving care and the staff at Friendship in Roanoke for their care and kindness to Hilda.
Services will be held at Oakey’s North Chapel on Monday, April 15, 2024. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 with the Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 and greaveside at Sherwood Memorial Park. Rev. Mike Palmer presiding.
