Margaret S. (Martin) Lubbert - October 07, 1926 - November 30, 2022

Departed: 11/30/2022 (Renwick)
Obituary Preview: Margaret S. (Martin) Lubbert was born October 7, 1926, to Bertie and Pearl (Trask) Martin in Boone Township, Renwick, IA. She entered Eternal Life on November 30, 2022, at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines under Hospice Care.
Margaret grew up on a farm near Renwick. She first attended the Boone Township country school where Margaret and her two sisters and brother walked about two miles to the one room brick schoolhouse. At that time, 32 children residing in the two miles square area attended that one room brick country school. As a young child, Margaret had nurturing qualities which led her to her future lifelong love of nursing. Margaret was always outside helping her Dad with the chores and providing care to small injured animals around the farm. One day while trying to help an injured bird in a make-shift cardboard box, Margaret was punching air holes in the cardboard box with an ice pick which caused the injury to her left eye at the young age of seven, which permanently damaged her eye leading to the prosthetic eye. She continued her education from the Boone Township country school and then attended and graduated with the Renwick High School Class of 1944. Margaret enjoyed many class reunions later. She went on to the Evangelical School of Nursing in Marshalltown where she obtained her RN Degree. She was then employed at the Iowa Veterans Hospital in Des Moines where she met her future husband, Arthur Lubbert who was an LPN at the hospital.
Margaret was united in marriage to Arthur Lubbert at Renwick, on March 19, 1951. To this union Arthur Clair Lubbert was born on May 12, 1957 in Des Moines. While living in Des Moines they had a very large garden in the backyard and shared another garden with a neighbor. Margaret was known for growing and nurturing her beautiful African violets. Margaret also enjoyed music and her musical talents were shown when she played the organ in her home. Art retired from the Veterans Hospital and they moved to Pine Lake near Eldora. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Eldora and belonged to the Ascension Order of the Easter Star. After Art’s passing in 1998, Margaret returned to Des Moines and was a resident at Illahee Hills for many years and enjoyed the staff and friends that she made there. Margaret loved to play Bingo and always kept close track of her special Bingo cards. She enjoyed 5:00 AM phone calls from her son every day. She loved her black cocker spaniel, Lady, and then her Chihuahua and it went with her everywhere. Margaret enjoyed going out for snacks and especially the oatmeal crème pies, and visits with her nieces and nephews. Margaret also loved having a cookie stash in her apartments. She enjoyed the many phone calls every week from her nieces and nephews and loved ones. She always ended those conversations with “Bye for now”. Because of her blindness most of her life, Margaret had a great memory of birthdays, anniversaries and telephone numbers. She had a quick wit and also a good story to tell. She was very determined, knew what she wanted and made lemonade from lemons in her life. She took great pride in how she presented herself, and heaven forbid, if you messed with her hair appointment.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Bertie and Pearl Martin of Renwick; husband, Arthur in 1998, and her son, Arthur Clair in 2013. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lois Nelson and Marian Buchanan and brother, Walter Martin and nephew, Dennis Martin.
Those left to cherish her memory are her nieces and nephews, Miriam (Dave) Koenigs, Anne Hepburn, Lynn (Julie) Nelson, Keith Buchanan, Mark (Susie) Buchanan and Tom (Candice) Martin and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family and friends. Margaret will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
