Alfred W. Schadendorf Jr. - January 19, 1939 - September 26, 2023

Departed: 09/26/2023 (Algona)
Obituary Preview: Alfred “Al” Wilhelm Schadendorf, Jr. of Lone Rock, IA, age 84, passed away on September 26, 2023, from cardiac arrest after an unexpected short illness.
Alfred was born on January 19, 1939, near Ledyard, IA to Alfred W. Schadendorf and Luella (Junkermeier) Schadendorf. Following graduation from Lone Rock High School in 1957, Al worked in construction near his home until joining the U.S. Air Force on May 13, 1959. After attending basic training and Air Police School in Texas, Al was stationed near Spokane, WA at Geiger Air Force Base.
While in the Air Force, Alfred met Margaret “Peggy” Noreen Iverson in Spokane and they were married at Pilgrim Lutheran Church on November 5, 1960. To this union, 4 children were born: Michael James in 1961, twins Gayle Diane and Nancy Ilene in 1964 and Karen Annette in 1972.
Alfred attended welding school in Spokane while in the service. After his military discharge on May 13, 1963, the family moved back to Iowa. Alfred worked as a welder at Snap-On Tools until March of 1967, when he began employment as an officer in the Algona Police Department, where he continued in various positions for the next 22 years.
After retiring from the Algona Police Force in March 1989, he continued his working career for another 14 years in the Maintenance Department of Kossuth Regional Health Center. Helping a local farmer in the Fall for many years brought him a lot of pleasure. Since both of them enjoyed stock car racing, Al and Peggy became promoters at the local fairgrounds from 1994 through 1996. They were inducted into the Kossuth County Agriculture & Motorsports Museum Racing Hall of Fame as Promoters in 2014. They also owned a retail store in downtown Algona for several years.
Upon retirement, Al and Peggy moved to Mesquite, NV in 2003, where they lived until 2020, when they returned to the family home in Lone Rock, IA. Al was raised on the family farm just south of Lone Rock. Being the only boy with three older and three younger sisters, he always stated he was spoiled rotten, but the girls all talked about what a challenge it was having a very active brother and told stories of his tricks and antics!
Throughout his life, Alfred loved being outdoors. He was an avid trapper from the age of fourteen and walked miles along the Black Cat Creek on his trap-line. This was a hobby that continued after the Air Force for many more years. Al loved fishing and hunting and took every opportunity to do either. Another hobby was pistol shooting. He was a state pistol champion for 2 years while on the Algona Police Force. Other hobbies were bowling, playing cards, baseball, softball and car racing of all kinds. Alfred was a longtime member of the American Legion and the Algona Lions Club.
Alfred was baptized at an early age and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt, where he remained a member until his discharge from the military. Upon moving to Algona, the family joined Trinity Lutheran Church where he was an active member for 39 years, attending church services when possible while on the police force, then serving as an Elder.
While living in Mesquite, Al and Peggy were charter members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church there. Al was very active in that church planting and served as Financial Secretary for many years. He was usher, greeter, and general go-to person for anything that needed to be done. Al never missed a day of reading his Daily Devotions on the computer.
Alfred is survived by and will be greatly missed by Peggy, his wife of over 62 years, son Michael (Patti Carstensen), daughters Gayle Schadendorf and Karen Schadendorf (Melissa Burner), and grand-daughter Shelbi Schadendorf. Sisters Sandra Harms (Harold), Kathryn Schadendorf, and Janet McGuire; sister-in-law Elinor Iverson; and brother-in-law Junior Hurlburt. Since he was part of a large family, he has many beloved nieces and nephews.
Alfred was preceded in death by his daughter Nancy, parents, parents-in-law, and grandparents; sisters Elnora Hurlburt, Joann Kinne and Ruth Nichols; brothers-in-law Ron Nichols, Tim McGuire, Bill and Jack Iverson; sister-in-law Lucile Iverson; and niece Judy Iverson.
Visitation will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt, IA, from 3-5p.m. on Sunday, October 1. His funeral will be on Monday, October 2, at 11a.m. The interment will be near the family farm in Fenton Township Cemetery. Thomas J. Bormann - January 30, 1935 - September 21, 2023

Departed: 09/21/2023 (Algona)
Obituary Preview: Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 , at 11:00 A.M. at the Divine Mercy Parish - St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. There will be a rosary from the Knights of Columbus starting at 9:30 AM.
Tom Bormann of Bode, Iowa passed peacefully into the heavens during the morning of September 21, 2023. He was 88 years old.
Thomas John Bormann was born to John and Clara Stessman Bormann on January 30, 1935 at the Kossuth Hospital in Algona, Iowa. Tom grew up on a farm with his brothers Francis and Norman in the countryside of Livermore, Iowa. Tom graduated from the St. Joseph school in 1952.
Tom served in the US Army for 21 months as a parts specialist. His training took place at Forts Chaffee, Carson, and Belvoir before he was stationed at Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu. Hawaii became the 50th state during his service on the islands.
Tom first saw Joyce Montag at a friend’s wedding. He danced with her that evening at the Star Ballroom in Dakota City, called her the next day, and their courtship started. They spent many nights dancing and were married one year later on June 11, 1966 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend, Iowa. Tom and Joyce welcomed 4 children into their family; Larry, Bill, Tim and Joan. Joan was born with medical difficulties and passed shortly after birth.
Tom loved farming and made this his career choice. He farmed the land that was bought by his Granpda Nick when he immigrated to the St Joe area from Luxembourg. He lived in the St. Joseph area almost his entire life until failing health moved him and Joyce to Urbandale in the Fall 2021 to live with his son, Bill, and family. Larry, Bill and Tim helped their dad farm and even raised thousands of chickens for a few years as Riverdale Egg Farm. The 80s were hard for the family but Tom did everything he could to save the farm. Because of his strength and steadfastness, the boys own and continue to farm their land today. When Tom retired, he helped his son, Larry, with Riverdale Electric which was located on the family farm and continues to operate today.
Tom’s spare time was spent serving his community and Lord. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1954. Next to raising his three sons, being a knight was his proudest accomplishment. During his time with the Knights, Tom served Council 3420 as a leader of their First Degree team and also served as Grand Knight. He served as District Deputy and State History Chairman. Tom was active in the St Joseph Catholic Church in St Joe, Iowa through being a lector, usher, choir member, church custodian, and member of the cemetery board. He served a major role in constructing the church’s first pro-life display with over 400 white crosses. Tom oversaw the omelette breakfasts and was active with Mulligan Stew for many years. Tom’s efforts as a Knight were rewarded in 2020 when he was chosen to be in the first class of the Knights of Columbus Hall of Fame.
Tom was a meek and humble servant to his Lord. He was proud of the sons he raised with Joyce, and the women they chose to be their wives. Tom and Joyce were blessed with 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, and spent many years traveling to and from almost every event that their grandchildren participated in. They also enjoyed getting away on their own to Branson, Missouri.
Meeting Tom in Heaven were his parents, grandparents, daughter,Joan, and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Those left to keep Tom’s memory alive are Joyce, his wife of 57 years; his sons Larry (Mary), Bill (Tammy) and Tim(Sara); his grandchildren Jason and Chris (Mary and Larry), Alex, Belle and Ben (Bill and Tammy), Lilly, Clara and Henry (Tim and Sara); and his great grandchildren Olivia and Eva (Jason and Sarah) and Morgan and Theo (Chris and Katie). He will also be missed by his special furry friend, Hobi.

Darla J. Brunsen - March 01, 1949 - August 15, 2023

Departed: 08/15/2023 (Algona)
Obituary Preview: Darla J. Brunsen, 74, of Algona, died peacefully at her home on August 15, 2023. In honor of Darla’s wishes, a private memorial and burial will be held.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Croix Hospice and Hospice of the Heartland.
Children laughing. Dogs romping. Cats meowing. Horses galloping. Freshly decorated holiday cookies. Baby blankets. Ballerina’s dancing. A garden of fresh tomatoes. Saltwater taffy. Sweet corn. Darla loved all of these things. We like to think these were some of the first sights and sounds she saw as crossed through the pearly gates to the afterlife.
Darla J. Brunsen passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. She was born on March 1, 1949, in Algona, Iowa to Phyllis A. Awe (Falk) and Robert E. Carr. She spent her childhood riding horses, traveling, swimming, taking ballet, running around with her best friends (Nancy and Marlys) and her sister, Cheryl (Gary) LaMaster. In 1967 she graduated from Algona High School and went on to AIB to study accounting before marrying the love of her life Richard Brunsen on September 14, 1968. They settled in Algona and raised three children - Dawn (John) Koenigsknecht, April (Bob) Schumacher, and Blaine (Jessica) Brunsen.
While her children were growing up, she took pride in everything they did. She made sure each and every holiday was special. She also enjoyed the simple things: watching soap operas, taking her kids to the mall in Ft. Dodge with her sister-in-law Ruth Brunsen, making holiday crafts, decorating elaborate ceramic Christmas trees or houses. If you were lucky, she gifted you with a handmade baby blanket.
She fell in love with Colorado while Blaine was going to college there and enjoyed traveling there long after he moved away. As empty nesters, Darla and Dick spent every summer at their cabin in Minnesota. Summertime was about fishing, cleaning fishing, eating fish, watching their grandog Tobey, having coffee with her neighbors and listening to their grandchildren romp around the cabin. She left behind 7 grandchildren - Maxten Schumacher, Hailey Brunsen (Jackson Helmers), Nolan Brunsen, Jake Koenigsknecht, AJ Koenigsknecht, Colson Koenigsknecht and Whitney Brunsen. She also left behind two great granddaughters - Sloane and Lennon Helmers. Her nephew, Andrew (Chris) Brunsen, and niece, Christie (Doug) Schoo, also held a special place in her heart. There were countless daycare children that touched her life…too many to name.
Darla was preceded in death by her mother, Phyllis (Jerry) Awe, and her father, Robert Carr, as well as her grandmother, Martha L. Falk, who she was especially close to, and her brother-in-law, Dale Brunsen. Darla will be missed by so many, but we take comfort in knowing she will be watching from above delighting in her grandchildren's and great grandchildren’s many adventures as they navigate the world.
The family would like to thank Darla’s care team with Hospice of the Heartland, Dr. Lampe, and St. Croix Hospice. We can’t thank Danielle Allen enough for caring so deeply for Darla during the last year. You gave her comfort and joy when she really needed it.

Shirley Tietz - September 28, 1937 - July 30, 2023

Departed: 07/30/2023 (Algona)
Obituary Preview: Shirley Tietz, 85, of Gig Harbor, WA, formerly of Algona, died peacefully and surrounded by her family on the morning of Sunday, July 30, 2023, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Gig Harbor.
Shirley Budd Tietz, daughter of Rufus Ray Budd and Juanita (Johns) Budd, was born on September 28, 1937, in Tampa, Florida. Shirley grew up with a large and loving extended family who spent much of their time together, both working and playing. She graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1955 and University of Tampa in 1959, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education.
Shirley was married to Donald Rudolph Tietz in Tampa in June of 1961. They moved to a farm in Burt, Iowa, in 1963. Though she left the south, the south stayed with her, and she became known up north for her sweet southern drawl, generous hospitality, and pleasant charm. Don and Shirley built what became their family home in Algona, Iowa in 1966 where they raised their two children, Lisa and Darren and lived for 20 years until Shirley moved back to Tampa in 1986.
Shirley dearly loved children and taught school for many years in both Iowa and Florida. She retired from her teaching career in Tampa in 2008 and moved to Gig Harbor, WA to be closer to her daughter, son in law, and 4 grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. She loved living next door to her family for the last 15 years of her life, much of her grandchildren’s growing up years, and they spent much time at her kitchen counter over a conversation and a snack or meal she had made them.
To know Shirley was to love her. She was a proud, loving, and dedicated mother and grandmother, a loyal friend, and a devoted family member. She absolutely adored being in the kitchen and always had her famous baked items ready to go for any event or occasion. She was “Meme” to not only her grandchildren, but all their friends and so many who knew her. She had a huge heart and treated everyone she knew with tremendous kindness and compassion. Her heart for the Lord guided and motivated all that she did, and her gifts of service and hospitality will be forever remembered. She faithfully attended church and her weekly Bible Study class, enjoyed her bi-monthly Bridge Club group, took part in all grandkid activities and was an avid reader. It goes without saying how greatly Shirley, Mom, Meme will be missed, but we rejoice in knowing she was welcomed into Heaven with great celebration and will live eternally with her Lord and Savior. We will not mourn as those without hope as we look forward to that wonderful day when we will see her again!
Shirley leaves behind her daughter Lisa Arnold and husband Torsten of Gig Harbor, WA; granddaughters Baylee Shaner and husband Luke of Newburyport, MA and Chloe Arnold of Gig Harbor, WA; grandsons Brennan and Caden Arnold of Gig Harbor, WA; nieces and nephews and cousins in Florida and Iowa whom she stayed very close with, and so many friends she made throughout the years. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Johnny and Juanita Pullara, and her son Darren who she now joyfully joins in Heaven.
An Open House Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 19th, 2023, at the home of Lisa and Torsten Arnold in Gig Harbor from 2-5 pm.
