Ming Zhang - May 11, 1957 - March 31, 2024

Departed: 03/31/2024 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: Ming Zhang, a beloved husband, revered father, esteemed professional, and cherished friend embarked on his final journey and passed away on March 31st, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, accomplishment, compassion, memories, and love.
Born on May 11, 1957, in Shanghai, China, Ming’s early years were marked by a profound commitment to excellence and achievement. His illustrious career began after earning his Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Urban Planning from Tongji University in Shanghai in 1983 and 1986, respectively. Starting in the Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Institute, he quickly rose through the ranks from Senior Planner to Deputy Chief Planner, earning recognition for his groundbreaking work on high-profile projects in Shanghai. His contributions were celebrated with prestigious awards, including first-place winner of the 1986 National Annual Planning and Architecture Award and the 1987 National Annual Science and Technology Progress Award. He rapidly rose to Deputy Director of the Shanghai Pudong New Area Development Office after being hand-selected by the then Mayor (later became the Premier of China) in 1990.
In 1992, Ming embarked on a new chapter in his life, immigrating to the United States to follow his heart and pursue a future filled with more love and opportunity. He quickly established himself as a respected professional in his field after receiving his second Master’s degree in City & Regional Planning and third Master’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1996 from The Ohio State University. His tenure in the U.S. saw him rise from an independent contractor for the OSU Center for Mapping in 1994, to a GIS Coordinator for the Bennett & Williams Environmental Consultants INC in 1996, to his eventual role as Director of the GIS and Planning Department of Bennett & Williams in 2002, where his expertise was instrumental in shaping infrastructure and improving lives.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Ming found joy in a myriad of interests and hobbies. His talents extended beyond the realm of urban planning, as he also found joy in home renovation projects, from one of his first projects of building a playset in the backyard for his children, to remodeling every room in the home, to his most recent project of designing and building a new backyard deck. As a passionate photographer, his lens captured the beauty of moments shared with family and friends, adorning the walls of his home with pictures of cherished memories that would be treasured for a lifetime. His skillful hands also brought delight to his family by spending time in the kitchen crafting delicious meals and snacks. His family will always remember Ming’s homemade traditional Shanghai-style lobster stir-fried noodles and scallion pancake.
Ming possessed a wealth of admirable qualities that enriched the lives of those around him. He stood as an active leader and pillar of his community. As a Church Deacon for the Columbus Chinese Christian Church for 6 years, he guided his fellow congregants, offering wisdom, support, compassion, and a helping hand. He also generously opened his home to international students, fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendship. Beyond his community involvement, Ming was also a romantic, with his love for music, art, and history. He possessed an undeniable charm and a romantic spirit that effortlessly captivated the heart of his college sweetheart, whom he married in 1986 and adoringly whisked away into a lifelong love story. His insatiable thirst for knowledge led him on a lifelong journey of discovery, approached with an open heart and an open mind. Ming’s magnetic personality and passion for life were contagious; he had no trouble making many friends with his vibrant spirit. Even in the face of adversity, Ming demonstrated unwavering strength and resilience throughout his 12-year battle with pancreatic cancer, inspiring all who knew him with his remarkable courage.
Above all else, Ming’s greatest source of pride and joy was his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Wenqin Chen, and a loving father to his son Eddie Zhang and daughter Alaina Zhang. No doubt his greatest achievement was raising his son and daughter to be successful in their own careers and lives. His unwavering love and support were the foundation upon which his family thrived. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and resilience will endure for generations to come.
Ming will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his warmth, wisdom, and strength. Please join us in bidding farewell to Ming Zhang from 3pm to 6pm on Saturday April 6th, 2024 at O.R. Obituary Preview: Nick (Niko) Constantinides February 14, 1942 – March 9, 2024 (age 82)
Nick Constantinides, a true renaissance man, who could literally fix anything and then serve you a loaf of his fresh homemade bread - a man who fiercely loved his friends and family (especially his grandchildren), who was addicted to his Pontiaka music, Sports, Sudoku and “telling it straight”, passed away on March 9, 2024.
Nick was born in the small village of Ximerino, a town just outside Kozani, Greece. Orphaned during the Greek Civil War, he was raised by his loving sister Fani (Symo) Mavridis. At the age of 18, his natural intellect and thirst for knowledge gave him the opportunity to attend college in Chicago, Illinois. It was there he met his beautiful Nicky. Her sisters Maria, Voula and Affie became his sisters, her parents, became his parents. After graduation from University of Illinois, in Electrical Engineering, Nick and Nicky made it official and were married on July 4, 1965.
Nick raised his family in Chicago and was extremely proud to have sponsored his two sisters and their families to come to the US. In 1999, Nick and Nicky moved to Columbus, Ohio to be closer to their grandsons and extended family. Over the years Nick enjoyed watching and guiding his grandsons to excel in sports, academics and everything in between. He was equally overjoyed to spend the winter months in Los Angeles, California, where he was able to support and encourage his granddaughters. He emersed himself into the arts -- from their Musical Theatre Produc.ons to Vocal Jazz concerts he loved it all. He loved sharing his memories, family history, language and culture with everyone… especially his grandchildren. In the last twelve years, Nick loved to come to work every morning at his son’s eatery “LOOPS”. Whether you were a blood related employee, a customer or a lifetime employee, to Nick, you were family.

His passing is a loss to the world, and he is mourned by all those who were fortunate to know him. Sarkis passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. Born to Moussa and Gatha El-Zein, in Bkarzala Lebanon, Sarkis was one of seven children, and a blessing to his family. Ever since he was a schoolboy, he was a giver and selfless in nature. God blessed him to bless others. He was always the top of his class and dedicated all his time to helping his family. After graduating, Sarkis received a full scholarship to the University of Southern California for a Ph.D. in mathematics. After getting his degree, he still had a strive for education and became an actuary and began working at American Automobile Association in Southern California.  Sarkis met his loving wife Lina through a mutual friend and married the love of his life in 1990. The couple spent happy days together among their friends in sunny Los Angeles for five years. They then moved to Lebanon where Sarkis worked at Globmed Lebanon and they had their children, Mussa and Widad.
Anyone who knew Sarkis knew that he was the most loving husband, father, sibling, and son a family could ask for. The 34 years he spent with his wife were full of respect, trust, love, and good times. As a father, he dedicated all his time and energy to raising his children into wonderful people who value everything he did. He did everything to ensure them a bright and successful future. Sarkis was a family man and valued nothing higher than spending quality time with his wife and kids. Sarkis has always been family oriented and remained loyal and available to all his siblings no matter the miles and circumstances that separated them. His wonderful qualities all began from his loyalty, respect, and unconditional dedication to his parents making him the ideal son. He shared this same love with his community of friends, professionals, and acquaintances. He was a natural mentor to his colleagues and professional team providing them with fatherly guidance and room to grow. He made the time to show up for everyone who reached out, providing caring, trustworthy, and sound counsel always.
Sarkis was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal, and brave. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained through all his life experiences. Sarkis was never frivolous with his words and every decision he made was grounded and calculated; his say in many discussions was known to be reliable and final. Sarkis was a gentle soul who always brightened any gathering he was a part of and left everlasting impressions of kindness and intelligence in anyone who met him. Peace and caring permeated him, and kindness felt like it was his middle name. Sarkis loved gardening and nature. He can often be found among his plants and trees or taking long walks to admire the greenery. He has left his mark on this earth in all the trees and flowers he planted and raised.
After retiring from Globemed in 2019, Sarkis still had a hunger for life and relocated to Columbus Ohio where he continued working as an actuary. Sarkis was diagnosed with cancer in 2020 and he fought strongly and stubbornly with his illness, showing his strength, will power and bravery. Sarkis was a truly great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family, that loves him dearly. He was a selfless man whose passing left an unfillable gap in the hearts of his loved ones. Vera peacefully passed away in her sleep at home on Wednesday, after living with chronic leukemia for many years which transitioned to acute leukemia recently. She lives on in the hearts of her loving family and many friends.
Vera was born at home in Templeton, Indiana, the only girl among four brothers. After her mom died, Vera cared for her dad until his death in her early teens. She graduated from Oxford high school, and moved to Lafayette, Indiana to attend business college while she worked at Retail Clerks, International. At a weekend dance Vera met a handsome Marine on leave and years later she married Donald Alexander on August 20,1948. Just six months ago, they celebrated 75 years together with a big party at the Forum on Knightsbridge. Vera and Don moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1949 and enjoyed living and working in Ohio for the remainder of her life. Their first apartment on 5th Ave offered support and life-long friendships. The home they built on Chaffin Ridge was truly the place she called home for 60 years. Vera hosted many birthday and holiday dinners with her exquisite cooking skills, especially known for those delicious prime rib dinners! She made a champion apple pie and was a zucchini bread expert. And oh, how she loved good chocolate!
While the kids were growing up, Vera was a tireless driver and volunteer for Scouts, Job's Daughters, DeMolay, sporting events, and youth groups. When they were older, she went to work at OSU's Dodd Hall as a staff clerk and was there for 11 ½ years. They considered her a "Treasured Asset". She then volunteered at Riverside Hospital for 21 years. Again, she was considered a "Treasured Asset" and was missed when she "retired".
Vera was a determined woman, strong in faith, extremely giving to family and friends, a lifelong supporter of Church. She always had boundless energy, a quick step, and her home was spotless. Her cards and letters often went out daily. She taught ceramics in the basement of her home and was a talented painter, needlecrafter, rug hooker, furniture stripper. She was a jack of all trades. Vera loved to travel and saw much of the US by van and tent. The children lovingly supported their parents trip to Europe for their 25th anniversary. Cruising was also a favorite experience. She was a master grower of flowers and tomatoes. Her dinnerplate dahlias, that she often brought to church and to doctor's offices, were her favorite.
Vera loved Northwest Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and faithfully attended often and for a very long time. She shared her talents as Elder, Deacon, member of Pastor Nominating Committee, Evangelist, Bible study, prayer chain, and sponsor for a refugee family from Vietnam. Notably, she organized the transport of the newly purchased organ from an out of state site and even helped Don to refinish the organ cabinet. She was also a long-time member of the Ohio chapter of DOC (Disciples of Christ) for 40 years. Always up for a hug (both give and take!) and an easy laugh. Vera bestowed constant love upon her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many friends. She taught them faith, tenacity, patience, resilience, a strong work ethic, the value of education, the importance of family, the fun of laughter, and many other life lessons. She will be very missed!

Siva Ratnarajah - February 05, 1950 - October 19, 2023

Departed: 10/19/2023 (Columbus)
Obituary Preview: With deep sorrow, we announce the death of Siva Ratnarajah, who passed away peacefully on October 19, 2023, near his longtime home in Columbus, OH, USA. Beloved husband of Yohambigai, father of Shanth and Thushani (Amar Ramkaran), son of the late Sivasubramaniyam and Pakkiyaluxmy (Pannagam, Sri Lanka); and brother of the late Uthayakumar and Pathmalojana Nadarajah, Shanthini Sriskandarajah (Sri Lanka), and Srikumar (Netherlands). Dear son-in-law of the late Sivasithamparam and Valliammai (Velanai, Sri Lanka) and brother-in-law of the late Kulasegarampillai, Ramalingam, the late Siva Gopal, Yogeswary Shanmugarajah, Rajeswary Mahalingam, the late Nageswary Jeyarajah, Mohanachandran, and the late Gnaneswary. Siva was so much to so many; but most of all, he was an undoubtedly devoted husband, father, and son. Family was of utmost importance to him. Having lost his father in early adulthood, he became the sole provider for his mother and four younger siblings, whom he cherished beyond words. An electrician by trade, after completing training at Jaffna Technical College, he began work as a private contractor to bring power to various Jaffna villages. He then worked as an electrical foreman for SIAMCO, a company based in Dubai, UAE. For over a decade, he enjoyed time spent with close friends, traveling the world for work. He married his doting wife, Yoha, on September 14, 1988 in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. They then traveled back to Dubai, where they were blessed with their loving daughter, Thushani. In 1994, the Ratnarajah family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Columbus, OH. Siva worked very hard to support his wife and daughter as well as his mother and siblings back home in Sri Lanka, juggling multiple jobs with family life. In 1996, the Ratnarajahs welcomed their son, Shanth Siva, his father's namesake. Siva was adored by everyone his light touched. He was an adoring father who always made time to make it to his children's games, school events, and dance recitals-camera in hand. Siva was a staple at his local Kroger (Crown Point), where he was loved by coworkers and customers alike. Siva will always be remembered as full of life and strength, despite a hard and well-fought battle with end stage heart and renal disease. He was a pillar of courage and love, the epitome of industriousness; and most of all, cherished patriarch of the Ratnarajah family, who will be desperately missed by all those who love him. A viewing/wake for Siva Ratnarajah will be held on Saturday, October 28, from 1pm-4pm at O. R. Woodyard Co. Northwest Chapel 2990 Bethel Rd. where a funeral service will take place Sunday, October 29, from 11:30 am. A funeral procession (Hindu) cremation will immediately follow the service. Crematory located at 1346 S. High St. Columbus, Ohio 43207

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, ranging from 100 to 500 words. However, some online obituary platforms may allow for longer tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a wonderful way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides a more detailed biography and often includes additional information about the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any accompanying photos or documents.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still need to add or modify certain details after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications may charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees. Be sure to ask about pricing when submitting your obituary.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituary platforms may allow for edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

How long will my online obituary remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform. Some websites may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include humorous stories or personal anecdotes that capture their spirit and personality.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to continue the deceased's legacy and support a worthy cause.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, fact-check all information before submitting the obituary. Verify dates, names, and details with family members or official records to avoid any mistakes.

What if I need to correct errors in a published obituary?

If you notice errors in a published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the revised version.

Can I create an online memorial page instead of an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages offer a unique space for friends and family to share memories, photos, and condolences. These pages can remain active for years to come, serving as a lasting tribute to your loved one.

How do I share an online obituary on social media?
