Obituary Preview: George L. Messenger, 91, Northbrook, IL, passed away peacefully April 2, 2024. Born May 4, 1932 in Richmond, IL, George was a 1949 graduate of Steinmetz High School, Chicago. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1954, he secured a statistician position at Kemper Group, Chicago. Working his way up through various positions within the company, he spent his entire career with Kemper Group, retiring in 1995 as President and COO of Kemper Reinsurance Company.
George married the love of his life, Gerry (née Pelz), September 12, 1953, enjoying 69 years together until Gerry’s passing in 2023. Originally residing in Chicago, they moved their young family to suburban Northbrook in 1959. His love of travel brought him to places like Africa, Iceland, New Zealand and much more. George, an avid golfer, model train enthusiast, and die-hard sports fan could often be found in his recliner watching golf or rooting for his beloved Fighting Illini and Chicago sports teams with a crossword puzzle or book by his side.
George is survived by his children Glenda (Bob) Hutchinson; sons George and Greg (Sue) Messenger, grandchildren Jason (Samantha) Hutchinson, Dina (Marcus) Burch, Laura (Scott Pollard) Messenger, Andy (Abigail Bline) Messenger, Maren Messenger and Jessica Messenger, as well as seven great-grandchildren; dear sister-in-law, Trudy Messenger and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife Gerry; son Gary; parents George and Viola Messenger; and brother Wayne Messenger.
Special thanks to his kind and caring doctors, Dr. John M. Sultan, Dr. Christopher R. Trevino and the compassionate hospice staff at Evanston Hospital.
Services will be private. Donations in his memory can be made to Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.

Rella worked 44 years for W.E. Long Company and retired as Sr. Vice President. She was a member of the American Society of Baking’s Hall of Fame.
Rella loved to read, golf and travel. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday April 18th at 11:00 a.m. at the Addolorata Villa Chapel, 555 McHenry Rd., Wheeling. Interment All Saints Cemetery.

She was known as a very loving wife, mother, sister, auntie, and daughter who cherished family.
Melba is survived by her loving husband Jose de Leon, her sons Christopher de Leon and Andrew de Leon, her mother Elsie Parcon, her brothers Roy and Rhett, and her sisters: Menchie, Melanie, Marnie, and Mythel. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Melba grew up in Bacolod City, Philippines. She attended Andres Bonifacio Elementary School, Negros Occidental High School, and eventually obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Corazon Locsin Memorial Hospital. After working as a nurse in the Philippines at the Makati Medical Center, she eventually migrated to America in 1977 where she continued her nursing career in Chicago working at Grant Hospital, Columbus Hospital, and eventually St. Joseph Hospital where she was ultimately a neonatal nurse. She enjoyed shopping, dancing, and gardening in her free time.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2024 from 4 to 8 pm at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Road, Glenview. Visitation will also be held Wednesday, April 3 from 9:15 am until time of the Mass at 10 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1775 Grove St., Glenview. Entombment All Saints Cemetery.

The matriarch of the Ramírez family, Virginia Bermúdez Ramírez, passed peacefully on March 16, 2024, reuniting with her late husband Robert B. Ramirez who she married in 1953. Virginia and Robert were born and raised in Chicago and met at Wright Junior College. Courageous and striking, she was a fierce advocate of civil rights. ESL turned Northwestern alumna, she founded a business, Glen Ayre Realty, while raising five successful children, Deborah Anne (late Ralph Gantz), Robert Bernard, Francis Lee, Steven Alfred (Mary Kreiner) and Lawrence Joseph (Kristen Pate). She loved to sing, and her voice lives on in her 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, whom she relentlessly loved and insisted on knowing.
Funeral Mass (10:00 am) and visitation (9:15 am) at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1775 Grove Street, Glenview, Illinois, Tuesday, March 26.
