Gus Hionas - February 08, 1949 - February 22, 2024

Departed: 02/22/2024 (Cherry Hill)
Obituary Preview: HIONAS-
Constantinos "Gus", age 75 of Washington Township on February 22, 2024. Beloved husband of Joyce "Zoe" (nee Miliariesis). Devoted father of Nickolas, Amy (Evan) Liatos and Jimmy all of Washington Township. Loving grandfather of Vasiliki and Dimitrios. Dear brother of Simos Hionas of Philadelphia, and predeceased by siblings Stamatia Axiotis, Petros, and Yiorgos. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Gus was born in the village of Kambia, Chios, Greece in 1949, the youngest of five. The family eventually moved to Athens, Greece, where Gus earned a living as a plumber. In that time, his family started migrating to Philadelphia. In 1973, Gus went to visit his family abroad after finishing his military service in Greece where he served as a driver and sharpshooter. Seeing his siblings working so hard at his uncle's St. George restaurants, he decided to stay in America to help. With only an elementary school education and a mind like a calculator, within a few years they built a legacy together opening four Midtown restaurants in downtown Philadelphia. The Midtowns were a staple in the city for over 40 years.
When he met the love of his life, Zoe, in 1974 he told her was going to marry her within their first conversation. Everyone knew, if Gus put his mind to something, he would make it happen. They were married in 1977 and were blessed with three children. He worked every day of his life and instilled in them the same no nonsense work ethic. He was hard on his kids, but he turned into a big teddy bear for his grandkids. They could do no wrong in his eyes and he adored them.
In his retirement, Gus could be found spending time at his children's businesses. He was a staple at Meadows Diner sitting any day of the week in the second little booth enjoying his beloved family, friends and patrons.
Gus was known for being tough and fearless but fair and empathetic. He was rough around the edges but also loving, generous and affectionate. He made his own rules but lived his life with loyalty and honor. He was the rock of the family, a legend to all who knew him, and will be truly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Friday 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church, 615 Mercer St, Cherry Hill. NJ followed by funeral services 11:00 a.m. Interment Locustwood Memorial Park Cherry Hill, NJ. Donations may be made to Saint Thomas Greek Orthodox Church.

She organized fundraisers for these organizations as well as many fundraisers for St. George. She was known for her organization of Kindergarten Registration welcoming young students to the West Long Branch Schools. Mary was a devoted mother, wife and grandmother. David continued to work in this industry until his passing. He preferred residential service calls because he found meaning in restoring comfort and safety to people in their homes.
David was passionate about sports. As a kid, he played soccer and baseball. In his late 20s, he returned to baseball and played in men’s leagues as pitcher and catcher until age 50. He was also an avid bowler. Through the years, he owned and restored classic Chevelles, Camaros, and a Cutlass.
David felt great pride in his military service and was a member of American Legion Post 281 in Blackwood, NJ. David deeply loved riding with his brothers in arms on his Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce in the annual Philadelphia Veterans Day parade and other rides honoring fallen service members.
David was outgoing and entirely genuine, and therefore made friends with every person he met. He is survived by his sisters Barbara Velock Sadler of Cherry Hill, NJ and Joanne Velock Vencius of Delran, NJ, brother-in-law Gary Vencius, and two nephews. What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and any notable achievements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are usually written by family members or close friends of the deceased, although funeral homes or professional writers may also assist in the writing process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services, donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their legacy is preserved. This can be a unique opportunity to reflect on your life and share your story with others.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service. A eulogy is typically more personal and focuses on sharing stories and memories of the deceased.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's personality or values.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

DON'T WORRY! Many funeral homes offer assistance with writing obituaries, or you can hire a professional writer who specializes in obituaries. You can also ask a trusted friend or family member for help.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

Costs vary widely depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by word count, while others offer package deals or discounts for online-only publications.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes! Online obituary platforms have become increasingly popular in recent years. These platforms often offer more flexibility and creative control than traditional newspapers.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers, visiting local libraries or genealogical societies, or using specialized databases like Ancestry.com or Newspapers.com.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and connecting with friends and family. Consider creating a memorial page or sharing the obituary on your personal profile.

What if I need to correct information in an already-published obituary?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the error and any necessary documentation.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

How do I handle multiple marriages or complex family relationships in an obituary?

Tread carefully when navigating complex family dynamics. Focus on accuracy and respect for all parties involved. If needed, consider consulting with other family members or seeking guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.

What if I'm unsure about including certain information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about what to include or how to phrase something, don't hesitate to ask for guidance from a trusted friend, family member, funeral home, or professional writer.

Can I create a memorial website or online tribute instead of a traditional obituary?

Yes! Memorial websites and online tributes offer a unique way to celebrate a loved one's life and share memories with others. These platforms often allow for more creative freedom and flexibility than traditional obituaries.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep online obituaries available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time. Be sure to check with the specific platform for their policies.
