Mary Lynn Allen - February 09, 1942 - March 24, 2022

Departed: 03/24/2022 (Creston)
Obituary Preview: Mary Lynn (Garver) Allen, of Creston, died on Thursday, March 24, in her daughter’s home in Wadsworth after a period of declining health. She was 80 years old.
Born February 9, 1942, Mary was a blessed child who, throughout her life, blessed others with her warmth, wit, and infectious smile. She was the last “Garver girl,” the youngest of three daughters of Don R. and Faye (Cooper) Garver of Burbank. Mary grew up in a lively home above her dad’s barber shop where she loved to ice skate on a nearby pond, play with the family’s cocker spaniel, practice piano lessons, and tag along on her sisters’ dates. In junior high, she became friends with an ornery Creston boy, Rich Allen. In high school, after being elected May King and Queen by classmates, the two finally went on their first date. The love and friendship that began in the halls of Norwayne would bind them together for more than five decades.
After graduating from Norwayne in 1960, Mary and Rich both attended Ashland College. Her father died suddenly a year later. She and her mother moved to Ashland to be near extended family, and Mary paused her college studies to take a teaching job. She and Rich were married on August 18, 1963. The couple rented an apartment in Creston, where Rich would teach science at Norwayne High School and coach track for many years. They welcomed a daughter, Lisa, in 1966. Two years later, the family, made complete with a cocker spaniel named Tosh, moved into their home near the high school, where Mary lived until her death.
For four years, Mary lavished attention on her daughter, reading books, playing dolls, and visiting cousins and friends (some of them invisible). She taught piano lessons and took classes to finish her bachelor’s degree in education, then went on to earn her M. Ed. from Ashland College. Her teaching career would eventually span 32 years: she returned to Burbank Elementary as a kindergarten and then first grade teacher but found her calling as a Reading Recovery specialist, a job that allowed her to cultivate the imagination of every child she met. She wanted her students to feel capable and special, and to discover a love of stories that would enrich their lives.
The joy Mary found in her job was matched only by the happiness in her widening circle of family and friends. Always close to her mother and sisters, she celebrated Sunday afternoons with family dinners in Ashland or Scio, typically selecting the window seat so that she could tease her relatives into serving her. On Sunday nights, she laughed with Rich’s family at the homestead on Myers Street in Creston. Fridays and Saturdays were often spent at Norwayne sporting events, and Rich and Mary’s house became a fun place for friends to gather to talk, snack, and play cards or Parcheesi. She mentored young teachers at Burbank and served as an OEA representative. She attended all of her daughter’s performances. She never turned down an invitation to dine with family or friends at Li’l Joe’s Pub or Skyway East.
Though life was already full, Mary was eager for grandchildren. She started to buy baby toys as soon as her daughter became engaged, and though she adored her new son-in-law, she had to wait until 1998 to kiss her first grandchild, Emma. Mary retired that year to be a full-time grandma and was rewarded with grandson Ian three years later. The entire family of six traveled to Disneyworld twice, and Mary and Rich enjoyed rambling vacations that took them to all 48 continental states. After his death in 2014, Mary traveled with friends to Hawaii, leaving only Alaska unexplored.
Even in retirement, Mary remained an educator. She took every opportunity to spark her grandkids’ imagination by reading to them, exploring the “nesting grounds” behind her house, and finding fun in the small moments of life. She volunteered at Northside Christian Pre-school and served on the Norwayne School Board for four years, playing an integral role in bringing a new turf field to the high school.
Throughout Mary’s life, she enjoyed an abundance of friendships. Her greatest talent was to find the good in others; she celebrated each person as a unique and valued individual and embraced them with her generous spirit. Those who knew her may wonder how a heart so big could ever fail. She faced her final weeks with good cheer, reminiscing about her many joys and the generations of readers that are her legacy. Her last minutes on earth were spent listening to her daughter read about the resurrection of Lazarus and its promise of rebirth.
Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Steve Marshall, of Wadsworth; two cherished grandchildren, Emma and Ian Marshall; brother-in-law Stan Siders, of Dalton; sisters-in-law Jean Poiner of Wellington, Phyllis Hanzie of Creston, and Linda (Paul) Shue of Sterling; and dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rich Allen; parents, Don and Faye; parents-in-law, Howard and Jenny Allen; sisters Phyllis Siders of Dalton and Carol Reese of Scio; brothers-in-law Dick Reese of Scio, Bob Poiner of Wellington, and Don Hanzie of Creston; and nephews Steven Reese, Douglas Reese, and Christopher Hanzie.
Friends may call on Friday, April 8th, at Murray Funeral Home in Creston from 4:00-7:00. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 9th, at the Creston Canaan United Methodist Church. Those who wish to honor Mary may donate to LifeCare Hospice of Wooster or spend time reading to a child.
