Edwin John Schmidt - September 20, 1931 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (Chagrin Falls)
Obituary Preview: Edwin John Schmidt died on March 9, 2024 at the age of 92. A 62-year resident of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Ed was born to the late Edwin C. Schmidt and Adele L. Schmidt (nee Raschert) in 1931 in Cincinnati, OH. He was predeceased by his younger brother, Richard F. Schmidt, in 2020. Ed felt fortunate to have attended high school at the Mercersburg Academy in PA (class of ’49), where he forged some lifelong friendships. Ed studied engineering at Yale University (’53 BS), followed by two years in the U.S. Army (Ordnance Corps), and then earned an MBA in 1958 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Ed met Elyce Wygant in New Castle, PA and they later married there in 1954, with Ed saying that it was the best thing he ever did; their marriage was a true partnership, and they supported each other in every area of their lives. They had a daughter, Heidi, and a son, E.J. Jr., and were married for 11 days shy of 70 years. Ed’s Army service, graduate schooling and early career years meant a fair number of moves before they settled in Chagrin. Ed’s diversified 35-year manufacturing career included tenure with Procter & Gamble, Firestone, McNeil Corporation, and Sifco Industries. His work necessitated countless trips throughout Canada, the whole of Europe, South America, China, and many other countries in Asia.
By far Ed’s most interesting business challenge and thrilling adventure occurred shortly after his supposed retirement: he accepted a volunteer consulting assignment through IESC; initiated and funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, it was designed to compromise the capabilities of former Soviet special weapons plants following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He, along with fascinating colleagues from around the world, was tasked with helping to convert and restructure those manufacturing plants to produce much-needed domestic, peacetime products. For almost two years, Ed lived and traveled extensively, often under grim and dangerous conditions, throughout Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and part of Russia, all together a volatile region. To his delight, his daughter eagerly joined him for several weeks’ travel through Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, sitting in on meetings and negotiations with the wild cast of characters with whom he and his colleagues dealt; this time with him is one of her most treasured memories of her father. Ed followed this stint with a shorter, equally engaging assignment in Romania, after which he returned stateside to resume additional consulting and volunteer work.
He and Elyce were deeply centered on their family and enjoyed creating welcoming homes and entertaining. A challenging project was buying and remodeling a pre-Civil War era farm, where the family lived for 24 years, caring for the land, their horses and other animals. Throughout his life, Ed loved fixing (or trying to fix) machines, vehicles (often with his son beside him), and devices of every kind; he designed his own home additions and handled house repairs and renovations.
Ed read widely in history, foreign affairs and classic literature, and was always current on the news. He loved music and the company of his succession of dogs, who were treasured family members. During his corporate years, he was an avid squash player and was, in his words “a continuous work in progress in golf.” He was a former member of Chagrin Valley Country, Cleveland Athletic, University, and Hillbrook Clubs.
A man of integrity, Ed was hardworking and modest. An involved father, he injected a lot of fun and pure joy into his children’s lives. Blessed with energy and curiosity, he derived much wisdom, perspective, and enjoyment from getting to know people of every background and position. And people were drawn to Ed; he was charismatic, with a ready sense of humor and some fascinating stories – and he always welcomed a good debate. He particularly looked forward to Saturday morning meetings with the interesting men in his discussion group.
His beloved wife and children survive him, and his large extended family, including in-laws and many nephews, nieces, and grandnephews/nieces, relished his company as much as he did theirs. His daughter and son have always felt that their great luck was in having had Ed as their father. He will be sorely missed.
Ed was a member of Valley Lutheran Church. A private family service will be held, in accordance with Ed’s wishes. If anyone should wish, the family suggests memorial contributions may be given to: Disabled American Veterans (DAV), 1240 E. 9th St., Cleveland, OH 44199 (https://www.dav.org/) or Geauga Humane Society – Rescue Village, 15463 Chillicothe Rd, Novelty, OH 44072 (https://www.rescuevillage.org/).

Rolando Giustini - February 14, 1944 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Chagrin Falls)
Obituary Preview: Born in Corchiano, Italy, near Rome, he arrived into this existence on Valentine's Day, recently celebrating 80 years of joy-filled living. He shared his open heart with all he knew, accepting everyone as a friend.
An Alumnus of Duquesne University, his passion lay in Theatre and Art, and he developed scripts for both TV and film in the 1970s. He traveled near and far, enjoying the experiences life offered, meeting royalty and movie icons, even journeyed compassionately among the homeless and sick of Calcutta. A man of faith, he rarely missed Mass, and prayed dearly for humanity's return to love. He walked with the Angels while on Earth, once in sight of the majestic magnificence of their wingspan. He was blessed to speak with his father's spirit, who expressed his love for his son, and was befriended by Jesus one dark night.
In his absence, Rolando will disperse his loving energy to guide and protect his wife, Theresa Giustini of Ohio; his sister, Anna Rosa Quattrone; and his three daughters, Jeanne Maiava (Osovale), Roxanne Giustini (Gregg), and Mauranne Giustini, all of NC. He will reunite in Heaven with many beloved ancestors, including his mother, Nara Giustini; his father, Antonio Giustini; and his brother, Fernando Giustini.
He lived a beautiful life. May Peace be his. Life is eternal, beginning again and again, with a pause in between. Like a continuous flicker of a star's intermittent twinkle, our luminous being lights the dark skies. As stars, we shine side by side, in unison with love's everlasting presence.

Patricia Quay Lybarger - August 24, 1927 - January 23, 2024

Departed: 01/23/2024 (Chagrin Falls)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Quay Lybarger, born 8-24-27, died 1-23-2024, age 96.
Survivors include her children, Donel Lybarger, Jr., Tim Lybarger (Linda), Linda Joseph (Richard), and Susan Ford (Robert); Grandchildren, Tricia and Eric Ford (Carly), Adam Lybarger (Elizabeth), Gilbert O’Connor (Alison) and Kathryn Stager (Augustus IV); and great-grandchildren, Augustus V and James. She also leaves many loving nieces and nephews (with one deceased), and many grand-nieces and nephews. Other predeceased family includes Donel Lybarger, Sr., Marjorie and Bill Larkins, and George Quay, III.
Pat was a graduate of Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve (now known as Case Western Reserve). Graduating in 1949, she continued the tradition of her mother and grandmother before her, both alumni of Mather College.
Pat will be remembered for her kindness, having learned by her parents’ (George and Marjorie Quay) example the value of charity to others. It was her nature to give selflessly to others whether volunteering hundreds of hours at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cleveland, Hattie Larlham Foundation in Portage county, or simply delivering a Holiday meal to a local family down on their luck.
Nurtured by her parents’ love of horses, hunting, and gardening, Pat’s life revolved around her deep relationship with nature. As a child, AKA “Patsy”, showed her Uncle’s horses, helped her Grandfather grow orchids, and worked daily on the family’s property gardening and tending horses, goats, and chickens. From an early age she travelled twice each year to Sheenboro, Quebec – in the summers for family camping and swimming in the Ottawa River and again in October for Partridge hunting. This was a tradition that she continued into her 90’s.
A devoted reader, one of her favorite authors was Sigurd Olsen, an American writer, environmentalist, and advocate for the protection of wilderness. She enjoyed membership in a women’s book club well into her 80s. Always the athlete and physically active, Pat followed her mother’s example in the world of competitive tennis, which she enjoyed while nurturing some of her best friendships.
Pat gained local notoriety for her prize-winning Dahlias. She was a member of the National Dahlia Society, serving on the area’s chapter. Locals may remember large bouquets of her blooms at the Chagrin Falls post office and Chagrin Valley Farms’ horse show office.
Her daily feedings of wild turkeys, bluebirds, and hummingbirds attracted many feathered friends to her heavily wooded home in Bainbridge. She was particularly fond of the Bluebirds that nested each year in boxes visible through her living room window.
Pat experienced much of the world through her wide travel, her favorite location being the Greek Isles. She made sure to capture many magical moments through her skilled photography and was competitive in local camera club shows and events.
An avid football fan, Pat faithfully followed the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State teams right through the 2023 season. Her loyalty to her teams, however, pales in comparison to the loving and loyal devotion given to her surviving family, who will miss her terribly. They will hold a private burial and memorial per her wishes. Those who knew Pat and wish to honor her giving nature, may donate to their favorite charity.
