Vergie Ann King - September 16, 1949 - March 26, 2022

Departed: 03/26/2022 (Jamestown)
Obituary Preview: Vergie Ann King was born September 16, 1949 in Fentress County and died March 26, 2022 following a brief illness. She was a member of Cooper’s Chapel Church and attended Jamestown First Baptist Church. She loved the Lord.
A proud native of Fentress County, she lived her entire life here.
She is the daughter of Delmer M. and Cordie Cooper King. She has three sisters, Phyllis (Dennis) More of Monrovia, California, Demple (Marvin) Weaver of Jamestown, and Brenda (Nick) Wright of Knoxville; three nieces, Melissa (David), Valerie (Matthew), and Denise (Quang), and two nephews, Douglas and David. She will be missed by her sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends, although she will be at home in heaven beside her mother. Vergie wanted everyone to know “I will love my family forever. I loved my mother most of all.”
She had many friends whom she loved. She had a great friend, Jerry Campbell, whom she loved and admired: He gave his life in Vietnam.
One of Vergie’s special gifts was serving others, whether running errands for those impacted by COVID, sharing what she had with those less fortunate, or bringing coffee to others to brighten their day. Vergie’s friends will remember that she always had a smile on her face.
Vergie enjoyed all her jobs–at Wright’s Store, in a beauty shop as a licensed cosmetologist, and as an elementary educator, retiring after thirty years of service.
The family will receive friends Thursday night, March 31st from 5 to 7 pm at Mundy Funeral Home. The funeral will be Friday, April 1st at 1 pm at Mundy Funeral Home. There will be no public graveside service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral program to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify others of the funeral arrangements, allow people to pay their respects, and provide a sense of closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, the funeral home or a professional writer may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, around 150-200 words. However, some online platforms may allow for longer tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may have specific requirements for formatting, word count, and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words. However, it's essential to discuss this with your loved ones and make sure they're comfortable with the idea.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary. These websites often offer additional features such as guest books, condolence messages, and photo galleries.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or paid options with varying levels of features.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. Online platforms may allow for edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or weeks.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing, you can opt for a private or limited-circulation obituary. This might be shared only with close friends and family or published in a local community newsletter.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber. Including lighthearted stories or humorous moments can help celebrate the person's life and personality.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you want to republish an old obituary, check with the original publication for permission. You may also need to obtain copyright clearance or provide proper attribution.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be overwhelming. Consider seeking guidance from a funeral home director, a professional writer, or a trusted friend or family member who knew the deceased well.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that resonated with the deceased can add depth and meaning to the tribute. Just ensure you have permission to use copyrighted material.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately. They may be able to correct the error or issue a retraction.

Can I write multiple obituaries for different publications?
