Paul Joseph Cordova Jr - March 09, 1929 - March 05, 2016

Departed: 03/05/2016 (Trinidad)
Obituary Preview: Paul Joseph Cordova, Jr., was born on March 9, 1929 in the bustling coal mining camp of Valdez, Colorado, the oldest child of Paul Joseph Cordova, Sr., and Nora (Hawks) Cordova. Paul was the great grandson of Manuel and Filomena Pacheco, who homesteaded what came to be known as Pacheco Plaza (now Jansen) and after whom the old Pacheco School House was named.
Paul attended elementary schools in Valdez and Sarcillo before his parents moved to Trinidad, where he completed his early school education at the old Rice School. He was graduated from Trinidad High School in 1947. He received his Associate of Science degree from Trinidad State Junior College before being graduated from the University of Denver with a BS degree in Business Management..
During high school, he began working for the Western Union Telegraph Company as a bicycle messenger, continued in increasingly more responsible positions with Western Union throughout his college years, then stayed with the Company, a career which eventually spanned thirty-three years. His work with the Telegraph Company took him to Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and eventually to the headquarters in New York City, then to Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, when the company Home Office operations were moved there.
He and his wife, Roberta, elected early retirement in October, 1978, and returned to Trinidad, where they purchased an old house at the corner of Maple and Sixth Streets which had been the home of Gilbert and Bee Saunders. They spent the next two and one half years alternately traveling and restoring the house.
In 1981, Paul was asked to be the first director of the newly-organized A. R. Mitchell Museum of Western Art, a position he held for nine years. During that time he guided the Museum’s operations and fund raising activities which led to the acquisition of the old Jamieson Department Store building on Main Street as a permanent home for the Museum. In 1990, he left the Museum and became Director of the Small Business Development Center at Trinidad State Junior College. He stayed there until retirement in 1994.
Paul joined the Kiwanis Club of Trinidad in 1979 and in 1984 he was elected Governor of the Rocky Mountain District, Kiwanis International. The District covered an area which included all of Colorado, all of Wyoming, and a part of western Nebraska. Prior to that, he served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Trinidad and as Lt. Governor of Division 12. He was awarded “Distinguished” status for both offices and was recognized at the 1986 International Convention “For excellence in leadership, enthusiasm, and dedication to building better lives through community service” in his role as Governor during 1984-85.
He was a Kiwanis Advisor to the Kiwanis sponsored Key Clubs at Trinidad High School and Holy Trinity High School, and was a Kiwanis Advisor for the K-Kids Club of Fisher’s Peak Elementary School in Trinidad since that Club was organized in 2004.
In other Kiwanis service, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain District Foundation and a District Chairman for the Kiwanis International Foundation. He also served on the International Relations Committee of Kiwanis International. He was a Hixon Fellow and a Lusche Fellow.
Paul and Roberta attended 29 consecutive Kiwanis District Conventions and twelve International Conventions. He continued his association with Kiwanis for the remainder of his life.
Although not an artist, Paul had a great interest in the Arts. He served as President of the Trinidad Area Arts Council for seven years. He guided the Council in the development of several new arts programs, including the Trinidad Community Chorale. Through his efforts, the Colorado Consortium for the Arts convention was held in Trinidad, which gave the community an opportunity to “show-off” its arts to attendees from throughout the state.
Paul served on numerous boards and committees including the Trinidad State Junior College Advisory Council for eight years and was president for two terms; Trinidad Country Club where he served as president for many years; the Bell Block Corporation where he served as president, a member of the Trinidad Community Chorale where he sang baritone/bass and was Chair of the Coordinating Board.. He also was associated with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce when it conceived the idea of the Miner’s Memorial.
Together with his wife, they received the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Civic Award in 2011.
Paul also served on Congressman/Senator Hank Brown’s Screening/Selection Committee for appointments to the military academies.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was an original member of the Goree Las Animas County Scholarship Board that awarded scholarships to outstanding students who reside in Las Animas County, Colorado.
In other youth related activities, Paul served for a number of years as coach of youth baseball teams and was a Cub and Boy Scout leader.

John Alonzo Clenin - July 13, 1923 - February 28, 2014

Departed: 02/28/2014 (Trinidad)
Obituary Preview: John A. Clenin, 90, died Feb. 28, 2014, in Denver. He was born July 13, 1923, in California, Mo., to Fred and Laura (Sappington) Clenin. John was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served honorably as a member of the 10th Mountain Division and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and several campaign ribbons. He married Mildred E. Burrescia March 1, 1946, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. From this union they had two children, Dennis and Sue. He received most of his training working on the job in construction. Some of the projects he worked in the 1940s and early 1950s were St. Joseph's Church and the El Rancho Club. John worked for the city for 50 years, and he retired in 2000. He began working for the city in 1950 with the water department reading water meters. He supervised the pipeline from Monument Lake to the filtering plant. He made the forms for the base of the water tank on top of Garfield Ave. He continued there until 1954, when he was involved in a terrible car accident on his way hunting. He was laid up for a year and a half. When he returned to the city, Gene Aiello was the city manager at the time. Aiello placed him in the Parks and Recreation Department. In 1958, the building inspector's position opened up and Clenin filled that position, which he held until his retirement. Over the years he had seen the number of permits and the size of homes increase dramatically. He was quoted in the Trinidad Plus that "There were years when we had maybe one new house a year and maybe 50 permits all year." In 1999 he said he oversaw 468 permits and 45 new houses. As inspector he used to oversee plumbing, electrical and heating, but in the early 1990s, the state took over all those inspections. When asked what advice he had for the person who will fill his position he said simply, "guts." He went on to tell of being yelled at on jobs, being chased by a contractor with a two by four, having a sledge hammer swung at him, and even a gun pulled on him. Although he said at the time, "contractors today are a lot better than when I started working." He is survived by his son Dennis (Kathy) Clenin and daughter Sue (Nicholas) Muller: grandchildren Kyle and Carly Clugston, Tom and Gina Clenin; great-grandchildren Monique Clenin, Dennis and Michael Cereceres, great-great granddaughters Kielee Cereceres and Delena Cereceres and great-great grandsons Michael Cereceres II and Malachy Valdez, all of Denver; and numerous nieces and nephews.
