Obituary Preview: Joanne "Jo" (Smaling) Hartenbower, 90, of Lostant, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Cedarhurst in La Vista, NE.
Memorial services are planned for Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at the Mueller Funeral Home, Lostant. The times will be announced at a later date. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Lostant.
Jo was born August 8, 1933 in Streator to Mervin L. and Hope E. (Robertson) Smaling. She married Frank E. Purdy on August 14,1954. She then married Milton G. Hartenbower on July 12, 1981.
Jo graduated from Springfield High School in 1951 and Illinois State University in 1956. She was a member of the Lostant United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed music, arts and crafts, ballroom dancing, the Red Hat Society, and traveling, especially to visit her children when they lived in Alaska, Hawaii, England, and Germany. Jo worked as a church secretary and with the State of Illinois in various positions. She also operated HEL Aviation, the commercial airport started by her late husband Milt, where she earned her pilot's license.
She is survived by three sons, Steven C. (Lori) Purdy of Papillion, NE, Neal R. (Marti) Purdy of Colorado Springs, CO, and David E. (Leslie) Purdy of Springfield; one step-son, Edward (Sherry) Hartenbower; two step-daughters-in-law, Toni and Sharon Hartenbower; grandchildren, Craig Purdy, Michelle (Jay) Eslira, Kathleen (Mike) Purdy, Andrew (Josh) Purdy, Eric Purdy, Connor Purdy, Benjamin Hartenbower, John Hartenbower, Jacob Hartenbower, Zachary Hartenbower, Mary (Nick) Arellano, Jeffrey (Molly) Hartenbower, Elizabeth (Cameron) Fairley, Brian Hartenbower, Michelle Hartenbower, and Matthew Hartenbower; three great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Oral M. (Kate) Smaling of Bloomington; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and two step-sons, Milton Fred and Michael A. Hartenbower.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 12, 2024 at the Mueller Funeral Home, Lostant with the Franciscan Friars officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Lostant. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Dose was born June 23, 1949 in Spring Valley to Robert and Helen (Forrest) Dose. He was a graduate of Lostant High School and Illinois Central College. Ronald married Sherry Lee Mecozzi on August 1, 1970 at St. Louis Church in Princeton. He was a farmer and realtor for his whole life. Ronald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry; five children, Scott (Jennifer) Dose of Fayetteville, AR, Christopher Dose of Lostant, Jamie Dose of Houston, TX, Megan Dose of Oglesby, and Kimberley (Nathan) Baker of Lostant; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Jeff (Linda) Dose of Oglesby; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Lynn and Judith Dose.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Dose, Jonathan Dose, Hunter Dose, Nathan Baker, Andy Forrest, Jon McAllister, and Jerry Moritz.

Obituary Preview: Sharon L. Freeman, age 68, of Lostant, passed away early Thursday morning, October 19, 2023, after a brief stay at Pleasant View Home in Ottawa following a hard-fought, long-enduring battle with MS.
There will be no visitation or service per Sharon's request. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. We do encourage all who knew her to get together sometime soon with their loved ones, and enjoy each other's company in her memory. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home, Lostant.
Sharon was born August 12, 1955 in Streator to Robert and Betty (Williamson) Maxey. She married Randy Freeman on November 16, 1974 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Tonica.
Sharon graduated from Tonica Community High School, and acquired a 2-year Special Occupation Nursing certificate at the Area Vocational Center at LaSalle-Peru High School. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Stanley Sydlowski of Tonica and Dr. Richard June and Dr. Jeffrey Handel of Streator. Also, for many years, was co-owner with her former husband, Randy of R & S Repair in Lostant. She also worked as a private transportation contractor for Lostant Community School, a warehouse picker for Advantage Logistics of Oglesby, and a receptionist for Progress Park Veterinary Clinic in Peru. Sharon loved nature, all birds and animals, and especially her kitties and dogs through the years, plus she enjoyed other people's as well. She appreciated being with family and friends and attended Open Bible Church in Streator as she dearly loved listening and learning about her Savior Jesus Christ whom she has gone now to meet!
Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Freeman of Chicago; fiance, Dirk Washko of Streator; former husband, Randy Freeman of Lostant; mother, Betty Wiertz of Washington, IL (formerly of Dalzell); brother, Gary (Debra) Maxey of Hermiston, OR; sister, Linda (Gary) Heider of Washington, IL; and the Norman Wiertz family step-siblings, Julie, Jeanne, Janet, Jill, and Jimmy; along with many nieces and nephews whom she cherished.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Maxey (3/21/2006) and step-father, Norman Wiertz (7/10/2009).

Mr. Fluech was born September 30, 1947 in Spring Valley to Walter and Jean (Burns) Fluech. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. Mr. Fluech was a truck driver and worked at Dose Farms. He enjoyed crafting, especially making jewelry, flea marketing, fishing, and playing the lottery in hopes of winning millions.
Survivors include his biological daughter, Tempy (Jim) Freeman of Cornell; adopted daughters, Tammy Garrett of Canton, P.J. Purden of Bushnell, and Stephanie Vannoy of Monmouth; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerard (Connie) Fluech of Indiana; one sister, Ellen Fluech of Toluca; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Fluech; his mother and step-father, Jean and Wayne Fessler; two sons, Howard "Van" Fluech Jr. and Toby Fluech; one grandson, Curtis York; and four siblings, Bob, Kevin, and Michael Fluech and Mary Wilson.

Mick was born January 22, 1958 in Streator to Ralph and Dolores (Huffines) Burcar. He worked as a commercial artist/painter. He has lettered many water towers throughout Illinois, hand painted company logos along with customizing semi-trucks, cars, etc. He was an avid arrowhead collector, loved riding dirt bikes, collecting antiques and playing his guitar. He was always the life of the party, he never met a stranger as he loved talking to people.
Survivors include his father Ralph Burcar of Leonore; his siblings; Brian (Cindy) Burcar of Lostant, Barb Woycik of Colorado, Kathleen Mercer of Kentucky, Doug Burcar of Lenore, Patrick (Janet) Hardy of Colorado, Debby (Larry) Brown of Hennepin, Patricia Hardy-Liles of LaSalle, Bobby Hardy of LaSalle and 19 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Dolores, stepfather Robert Hardy, a step-brother Mark Hardy and two brothers-in-law, Bill Mercer and Mark Woycik.

Mr. Grubar was born October 31, 1945 in LaSalle to Rudolph "Rudy" and Luella "Lou" (Ott) Grubar. He married Mona Husser on March 12, 1967 at the Church on the Hill in Hollowayville. He was a member of Lostant United Methodist Church.
Mr. Grubar was a self-employed entrepreneur. He was a fireman and EMT in Lostant where he was instrumental in starting the ambulance service and was a member of the board. He owned and operated Bob's Welding from 1975-1995. He and his wife also owned and operated Main Street Station ice cream shop in Lostant from 1990-1995. Cars, especially 1964 Chevys, car shows, and collecting treasures were his passions.
Survivors include his wife, Mona; three daughters, Lisa (Tony) Sons of Wenona, Jill (Jerry) Harris of Dunlap, and Bobbi (Steve) Castelli of Oglesby; two grandchildren, Paige Sons and Tracker (Scarlett) Harris; two brothers, Larry (Barb) Grubar of Oglesby and Jim (Sally) Grubar of Waltham; a sister, Mary Jo (Bruce) Conner of Utica; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Grubar of Waltham; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Randy Grubar; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda (John) Terramiggi and a brother, Dale Grubar.

Alan was born March 24, 1975 in Peru to Kim and Nora (Underland) Richard.
Alan was a manager at FedEx in Peru where he worked for 27 years and was honored to receive multiple awards including the prestigious Purple Promise Award in 2004. He was an avid fisherman and Chicago Cubs fan. He loved going to movies and concerts.
Survivors include two sons, Tyler Richard and Malachi Washburn; his mother, Nora Richard of Tonica; his father, Kim Richard of Lostant; his step-mother, Vickie Richard of LaSalle; his sister, Jennifer (Mel) Mertel of Tonica; a step-brother, Lee Borio of Oglesby; two nephews, Landon and Logan Mertel; his niece, Lily Mertel; one aunt, Cathie Edens of Oglesby and two uncles, David (Barb) Underland of Indiana and Larry Smith of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald and Geraldine Richard and Carl and Opal Kaatz.

Mrs. Wever was born January 2, 1940 in Spring Valley to William Russell and Anna (Berry) Winner. She was a graduate of Lostant High School. Judy married John R. Wever, Sr. on March 8, 1958 at her parent's home in Lostant. She was a member of the Lostant United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Circle, the Lostant Ladies League, and the Putnam County Senior Center in Standard. Judy loved word searches, reading, and watching NASCAR. She owned and operated Judy's Hobby, Ceramic Sales, and Painting Shop where she also taught classes.
Survivors include her three children Connie (Jeff) Sale of Lafayette, IN, Julie (Mark) Murray of Harrah, OK, and John Wever, Jr. of Lostant; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John on May 16, 2006; and one son, Eugene John Wever on April 24, 1964.

Vickie owned and operated Double L Bar in Lostant for many years and later worked as secretary and treasurer for Crossroads Community Church. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards and attending her grandchildren's sporting events. Vickie was a member of Crossroads Community Church.
Survivors include her husband, Patrick of Lostant; three daughters, Danell (Dan) Mertes of Lostant, Darlene (John) Freeman of Lostant, and Denice Carr of Lostant; five grandchildren, Logan Snyder, Madison Freeman, Meleah Mertes, Caden Mertes, and Akye Mertes; one great-granddaughter, Lilah Freeman; one sister, Marla Dee Lawless of Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.

Private Mass of Christian Burial was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Leonore with Rev. J.A. Small officiating.  Burial was in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.  Arrangements were entrusted to the Mueller Funeral Home, Lostant.
Mr. Wiesbrock was born August 16, 1944 at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator to LaVerne "Bud" and Marjorie (Lee) Wiesbrock. He graduated from Lostant High School with the Class of 1962. Danny was a veteran of the United States Army. He married Joanie Schmitt on September 25, 1965 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Leonore. Danny owned and operated Wiesbrock Trucking and Ottawa Barge Terminal. He enjoyed driving truck and farming at the family farm. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, the Lostant American Legion, and the Leonore Volunteer Fire Department. Danny loved classic cars, the Chicago Cubs, and fishing at his home in Wisconsin.
Survivors include his wife, Joanie of Leonore; five children, Kelly (Beth) Wiesbrock of Piedmont, CA, Ronald Wiesbrock of Leonore, Martin (Janet) Wiesbrock of Leonore, Jason (Kelly) Wiesbrock of Lostant, and Angela Warman of Hinsdale; 15 grandchildren, Nicholas Wiesbrock of Chicago, Katherine Wiesbrock of Dallas, TX, Caroline Wiesbrock of Winston-Salem, NC, Elizabeth Wiesbrock of Piedmont, CA, Devyn Wiesbrock of Leonore, Mollie Wiesbrock of Leonore, Augustus Wiesbrock of Champaign, Guinevere Wiesbrock of Leonore, Abraham Wiesbrock of Leonore, Megan Wiesbrock of Champaign, Jacob Wiesbrock of Champaign, Lucas Wiesbrock of Lostant, Sarah Wiesbrock of Lostant, Samantha Warman of Hinsdale, and Logan Warman of Hinsdale; one sister, Diane Kreiser of Leonore; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved family cat, Louie.

Chuck was born June 8, 1940 in Ottawa to Raymond and Bessie (Holliday) Stephens. He was a graduate from Ottawa Township High School where he played football and was an all conference half-back. Chuck went on to attend Illinois Wesleyan University where he played football and obtained his Bachelor's Degree in History and Physical Education. He then did graduate work at Illinois State University and Bradley University. Chuck was a 25-year veteran of the Illinois State Police, retiring as Master Sergeant.
Chuck married Mary Jane Logan on June 8, 1963 in Ottawa. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Wenona, the National Rifle Association, and the Sandy Ford Sportsman Club. Chuck enjoyed boating, fishing, and ice cream, especially Butter Pecan. He was an avid dog lover and his faithful companions were Josie, Bruno, Thunder, and Blackjack. Above all, he was a devoted husband and father.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane; four children, Sue Ann (Harry W. III) Dent of Roscoe, Anthony "Tony" (Rebecca "Becky" Barr) Stephens of Bensenville, Linda Jane (Philip) Goodman of Flat Rock, Benjamin A. (Sheila Nally) Stephens of Westchester and four grandchildren, Coen Dent, Harry W. Dent IV, Thomas Goodman, and Emma Goodman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James, in infancy; one grandson, Kyle Andrew Dent, in infancy; one sister, Rosemer Stephens and one brother, Raymond B. Stephens.

Austin was born November 17, 1996 in Streator to John and Darlene (Lechner) Freeman. He was a graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School, Class of 2015, where he excelled in sports, including football, wrestling and track. He married Allyson Hanson on August 29, 2020 in Minooka. He worked as a concrete finisher.
Austin enjoyed playing the guitar, hiking and spending time with his family. He was a Chicago Bears fan. Above all he was a great dad.
Survivors include his wife, Allyson of Minooka; his daughter, Lilah; his parents, Darlene Freeman of Peru and John Freeman of Lostant; his sister, Madison Freeman of Lostant; maternal grandparents, Pat and Vicky Strode of Lostant; paternal grandparents, Richard and Bonnie Freeman of Lostant and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Mertes was born September 2, 1944 in Spring Valley to Leo and Mary Ellen (Weber) Mertes. He was a Vietnam veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Mertes was an electrical engineer at Owens in Streator for over 40 years. He was a member of St. Michael's Church, Streator and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, reading, poker, and painting.

Obituary Preview: Marian L. Shawback Sturgeon, 85, passed peacefully from this world to her eternal home on Thursday, August 25, 2022, at the University Hospital, Madison, WI following a brief illness.
Marian was born Marian Louise Richard to Wesley and Evelyn (Strode) Richard on Friday, November 13, 1936, in LaSalle. She married Richard R. Shawback on January 4, 1955, at the Richland EUB Church. They were a special team, always active in their church, whether it was in the music ministry, opening their home to the young people of the church for picnics, Bible studies and campouts, or Marian using her gift of hospitality and hosting many people in her home over the years. They especially loved to spend time with their children and grandchildren as often as possible and were farmers near Streator until Richard's passing on March 9, 1996. Marian married Thomas A. Sturgeon on January 19, 2001 in Olmsted Falls, OH. She and Tom loved to travel all over the country to visit friends, go to conferences for the military groups Tom was a part of, and to visit family. Tom preceded her in death on October 2, 2021. One of her favorite pastimes was playing the piano. She loved the old hymns and over the past year she memorized 75 hymns on the piano, while also teaching herself to play by ear.
She is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Kris) Johnson of Rochelle and Julie Shawback of Warrenville. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Leslie (Justin) Kelley of Watertown, WI, Derek Johnson of Rochelle, and Travis Johnson of Alhambra, CA; a great-grandson, Sebastian and a great granddaughter, Nevaeh; three step sons, Andy (Carol) Sturgeon of Scotts Mills, OR, Randy (Lorrinda) Sturgeon of Vail, AZ and Ken (Beth) Sturgeon of Woburn, MA; and eight step grandchildren, Shannon (Josh) Hancuff of Vancouver, WA, Andrew Sturgeon of Scotts Mills, OR, Charles (Megan) Sturgeon of Vail, AZ, Eliza (Mason) Fortney of Kansas City, MO, Christian, Danielle, Kimi and Harry Sturgeon of Woburn, MA. She is also survived by a brother, Eugene (Victoria) Richard of New River, AZ.

Born July 10, 1953 in Chicago to the late Arthur H. and Pearl M. (Klinkey) Hoyt. Tom was in the graduating class of 1972 at Joliet West High School in Joliet. He served his country in the U.S. Navy as a Sea Bee from 1973-1977.
While working for the Illinois Department of Corrections, he met and married the love of his life, Rose Stolte on February 11, 1984. Tom retired from the Department of Corrections after 30 years of service. In retirement, he pursued his passion for blacksmithing and demonstrations of his craft. He belonged to the LaSalle County Historical Society (life member); Americana Legion Auxiliary, Post 237 (life member); Bishop Hill Heritage Association; and the Blacksmith Club.
He was loved and will be missed by the community in which he lived.
He is survived by his sister, Sharon (David) Dudding; niece, Andrea Dudding; nephew Jonathan Dudding; and several cousins.

Her grandfather also served as a groundskeeper at the hospital after retiring from farming. Carol grew up on a farm in rural Lostant and attended Lostant Community High School where she was valedictorian. She later studied at the Brown Business School in Peoria.After business school, Carol worked at Illinois Bell Phone Company while living in the YWCA in Peoria. She met her future husband, Harold Johnson of Brimfield at the Fireman's Dance in Lostant, while living in Peoria. They marred on April 28, 1963, at her home church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Tonica. Her parents were also married at the same church.The pair lived on a farm in rural Streator, close to her parents, where the couple raised their family and farmed together for over fifty years. Prior to full time farming, Carol also worked at a local grain elevator in Lostant. She was a faithful member of Park Presbyterian Church, Streator where she taught Sunday school for several years and served on many committees. She enjoyed traveling, attending plays and spending time with her seven grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to Johnny Cash, a favorite of her husband's as well.Carol is survived by her four children, Daniel Johnson of Streator, Cathy (Perry) Doucette of Sugar Grove, Julie (Jeff) Vogt of Inverness and Amy (Don) Parker of Chatham and seven grandchildren, Erin and Ayden Doucette, Jenna, Jessica and Jeffrey Vogt and Zoe and Zachary Parker.She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of fifty-seven years.
