Willa M. Menck - June 15, 1932 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Cedarburg)
Obituary Preview: WILLA M. MENCK
Willa, our Freya has set sail for Valhalla at the age of 91. Willa departed on Friday, April 12 from her treasured Cedarburg home designed and built with beloved husband Werner. Willa was a proud and loud University of Wisconsin-Madison Kappa Alpha Theta, Wauwatosa East High School Red Arrow Girl and legendary Cedarburg High School Hall Monitor.
Willa enjoyed keen intellectual banter with her family, friends and students. As an English teacher Willa possessed a Shakespearean philosophy and often recited valued words of the Bard of Avon. “The world is too much with us; late and soon, Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers; Little we see in Nature that is ours; We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!”
Willa grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin during the happy days of the 1950’s where she attended Wauwatosa East High School. As a precocious teen Willa was a femme fatale who enjoyed the spotlight as a figure skater, often traveling on her own by rail to train with top figure skating coaches in Chicago, Illinois and Rochester, Minnesota.
After graduating from Tosa East, Willa became a proud Bucky Badger attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she learned to drink beer, enjoyed dancing and singing on Bascom Hill, riding a homecoming parade float as a Badger Beauty and graduating with a degree in Education. Upon graduation from UW-Madison Willa began teaching English, Speech, Forensics and One-Act Play at Waterford High School and Brookfield Central High before marrying her Tosa East classmate Werner H. Menck.
Willa and Werner’s marriage was a strong merger. Willa was a tough and savvy partner who took pride operating as an executive’s wife and raising her family while living in Wauwatosa Wisconsin, Concord, Massachusetts and Barrington, Illinois. At sixty years old after raising her children and moving to Cedarburg, Willa staged her comeback as an educator returning to monitor the halls of Cedarburg High School. Known to countless students as the infamous Buzzcut or Bruiser Willa became a legend challenging and outwitting students cruising the halls of CHS with sly stealth. Many believed the legend that Willa had eyes in the back of her head by demonstrating her uncanny ability to track them in her halls. But for Willa becoming a hall monitor was about much more than busting and writing up kids. It was about talking with and getting
to know her students while encouraging and motivating them to discover their value and express themselves in their unique way. She often dazzled students in the halls of CHS by demonstrating her stag jump or reciting passages from The Canterbury Tales in Middle English.
Willa is now in Valhalla with her husband Werner and parents Elmer and Jessie Widerborg. To carry on she leaves her children son Eric, daughter-in-law Laura, daughters Linda and Jessica Claire and her little sister Rhea Kalkhoff. Along with her family Willa’s feisty friends Roberta, Suzanne and Cindy gave her a life filled with fika and hygge.

Obituary Preview: Dale R. Mantel found eternal peace on February 26, 2024 at the age of 65. Dale was born on November 28, 1958 in Milwaukee to the late Alvin and Pat (nee Dowe) Mantel. He graduated from Germantown High School in 1977. Dale married Arleen (nee Schellinger) on June 8, 1991. They were blessed with 2 wonderful sons, Brandon and Travis.
Dale carried on his family's legacy as the third-generation owner of a business founded by his grandfather, working alongside his parents, Alvin and Pat and brother and sister, Dean & Dawn throughout the years. He served as President of the company since 2007. Since 2015, Dale’s son Brandon has joined the family business as the fourth generation. He was being mentored by Dale in preparation for a smooth ownership transition.
Dale cherished his family, and his love extended beyond his immediate family. He served as a father figure to many, including Brandon and Travis's friends, who held a special place in his heart and his home was always open to them. He actively supported them and his family, never missing a sporting event they were involved in.
Dale was very passionate about stock car racing. In his younger years he was a crew member with Vogel Brothers Racing, which toured the Midwest and Canada running the ASA racing series. In later years he continued his love for racing as a spectator, by traveling across the country to watch races with family and friends.
Dale and his son Travis shared an enthusiasm for Marquette basketball. They were season ticket holders, cheering alongside each other and created lasting memories together.
Every fall, Dale’s focus shifted towards his deep love for football. He stayed updated with high school, college, and the Green Bay Packers; and eagerly followed the journeys of any player or coach he knew.
Dale’s love for Arleen was evident in the way he cherished spending time with her. He always supported her in her interests and passions. Even when he didn’t personally enjoy some of them, he always accompanied her. He was a wonderful husband to her and knew exactly how to calm her storms.
Dale loved to travel and especially loved road trips. He shared his interest with his family and showed them the country. He had a gift of knowing how to maneuver around big cities and country sides, always finding interesting places to visit.
Dale, a man of quiet strength, touched many hearts with his kindness, generosity, and humility. His gentle presence will leave a lasting impact on those who knew him, and his memory will hold a special place in their hearts.
Dale faced a courageous battle with esophageal cancer that metastasized since 2018. He faced his challenges head-on, inspiring all who knew him with his unwavering faith, perseverance, and love for his family. These were the forces that gave him strength throughout his journey, all while maintaining a spirit of quiet resilience and no complaining about his situation. Karen N. Schmidt - October 12, 1937 - February 21, 2024

Departed: 02/21/2024 (Cedarburg)
Obituary Preview: Karen Nancy Schmidt, nee Wolf
Karen was born on October 12, 1937 in Plymouth, WI to Almond H. Wolf and Harriet Wolf, nee Dipple. Her parents owned and ran a plumbing business and they lived upstairs – the building is now a historic landmark.
Karen went to high school in both Plymouth and Eagle River, Wisconsin. She finished a year of college at UW-Stevens Point and was in modeling school at the time of her marriage to Harold Schmidt on October 3, 1959. She won an Elizabeth Taylor look-alike contest and went off to New York to model clothing from the movie, Cleopatra. When her youngest child was ready for college, she decided she was too and entered her freshman year at UW-Milwaukee in 1986. Upon graduating, she taught math at Ethan Allan School for Boys full-time, at MATC part-time and pursued her Master’s Degree in Education. She retired in 2005.
A true polymath, Karen was a skilled artist, sketching fashions and people and was the artist who decorated Eagle River High School’s 1955 yearbook. She studied watercolor and Japanese ink drawing. In addition to fine art, she was adept at crafts of all kinds and was a master sewer, making her own patterns and doing her own fitting. She knit, crocheted, beaded, embroidered. Her father gifted her a baby grand accordion for her 16th birthday and she, unsurprisingly, played very well, showing a preference for polka.
As a mother, Karen shuttled her children to lessons of all kinds, instilling early the need to explore a variety of things. All three kids attended piano lessons, gymnastics, swimming, tennis and ballet (much to the mortification of Steve and Greg at the time). She was an avid reader with interests spanning fiction and non-, mysteries, romance and crime novels and would bribe her children to read with $.25/book (which was unfunded by the $.10 penalty for using the word “ain’t”). She was an affectionate, kind person and often a silly one, enjoying a mild prank and loved to laugh.
As a grandmother, the shuttling continued as she brought her two oldest grandsons to College for Kids and concerts and symphonies. She loved visiting the younger two, who are out-of-state in Maryland, and helping with the transport to summer baseball camps.
Karen is survived by her husband of 64 years, Harold W. Schmidt. She is survived by her three children: Steven (Tracy) Schmidt, Gregory (Katherine) Schmidt, Kristin Schmidt. Further survived by four grandsons: Alec Schmidt, Brandon Schmidt, Liam Schmidt and Ronan Schmidt. She was preceded in death by her father Almond Henry Wolf, her mother Harriet Wolf nee Dipple and a sister, Marilyn.
The Funeral Services for Karen will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 1:00 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church (701 Washington St.), Grafton. The visitation will be at the church prior to the Funeral Service from 11:00 AM until 12:45 PM. Interment will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, in Grafton immediately following the luncheon. Memorials to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church are appreciated.

Arleen L. Ziemer - September 29, 1925 - December 27, 2023

Departed: 12/27/2023 (Cedarburg)
Obituary Preview: Arleen L. Ziemer (nee Rusch), age 98, of Cedarburg, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023. Her lifetime of caring for others ended as she was surrounded by family and as she was cared for by Horizon Hospice and the staff of Ellen’s Home of Germantown.
Arleen was born at home in the Town of Jackson on September 29, 1925, to Joseph and Renada (nee Gilbert) Rusch. She was baptized at David’s Star Lutheran Church, Jackson, on October 11, 1929, and confirmed her faith at David’s Star on April 2, 1939. She was united in marriage to Urben A. Ziemer on June 1, 1946, at David’s Star. She joined Urben as a member at St. John’s, Jackson, and served as an active member of the congregation in many different roles as her church became a central part of her life.
Arleen’s 98 years spanned a world of change. As a young girl, she would go out in the fields of her family farm to work up the land with the draft horses Barney and Lucy. In her 90s, she learned to use Facebook and read the newspaper online. She grew up speaking German and learned English as she began grade school. She did not have the opportunity to go to school beyond 8th grade, but she expected all of her children to go to college and beyond.
Arleen knew both hardship and joy. She lived through the depression and WWII; she and her husband Urben lived through a devastating barn fire in 1950; and her beloved husband died suddenly in 1975. Her joy was in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She waited to transition from this world as her newest great grandchild came into this world.
Arleen’s life was rooted in dairy farming and the church. In farming, she transitioned from working with horses and milking by hand to driving tractors and milking in a milking parlor. When Urben passed, she and her son James kept the family farm going and growing. In her church life, she was active in Ladies Aid, Women’s Circle, Choir, and Altar Guild. She visited the “elderly” of the congregation well past the time when she was older than those she visited! And quilting. Always quilting! For many years and into her early 90s, she sewed 100 or more quilts per year for Lutheran World Relief. She didn’t travel far or often from her home area, but her quilts traveled the world.
Arleen was a strong, resilient woman of deep faith and sharp wit. In her teen years, she worked in a canning factory and shoe factory and regularly changed the car’s flat tire in driving to the shoe factory. She was the first woman to serve on her congregation’s Council, and grounded in her faith, she persevered through all the bumps of life. Her care and attention to people was expressed in a quick wit, humorous observations, and quips that could catch people off guard and bring a laugh.
Arleen is survived by her four children: Mary (Rolfe) Nervig of McFarland, WI; Joyce (the late Mike) Caldwell of Cedarburg; Mark (Claudia) Ziemer of Gays Mills, WI; and James “Jim” (Sharon) Ziemer of Cedarburg; 12 grandchildren: Rachel (Johnny) Craddieth, Matthew (Kari) Nervig, Sarah Nervig, Ruth (Gauvain Gamon) Nervig, Peter (Toni Alvarez) Caldwell, Aaron (Jordan Jones) Caldwell, Nate (Corrie) Ziemer, Andy (Sarah) Ziemer, Amanda (Jake) Wedeberg, Becky (Jeff Schultz) Ziemer, Paul (Katie) Ziemer, and Jenny (Niles) George; and 19 great grandchildren. Arleen is further survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Arleen was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Renada; husband Urben; son-in-law Mike Caldwell; siblings and spouses Lorinda (Carl) Balsiger, Hertha (Carl) Schramm, and Verlin (Helen) Rusch; father- and mother-in-law Paul and Elsa Ziemer; brothers- and sisters-in-law Leonard (Jane) Ziemer and Jasper (Delores) Ziemer; cousins, other relatives, and friends.
