Deborah Schaefer - October 19, 1953 - May 01, 2023

Departed: 05/01/2023 (Kansas City)
Obituary Preview: Deborah, (Debbie) was born on October 19, 1953, to Betty & John Stacy Jr. in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Debbie graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 1971. She soon attended Avila University majoring in elementary education where she received a teaching certificate and B.A. degree in elementary education graduating with honors as Summa Cum Laude. She later went back to school where she and Michael (her husband) earned an M. A. degree from the University of Missouri in Adult Education. Debbie was a published author and wrote books on speedwriting and assisted in other publications from McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. She enjoyed intellectual and interpersonal conversations on philosophy, psychology, religion, politics and current affairs.
Debbie has invested many years of her time praying and participating in the Third Order Lay Carmelite Community. She enjoyed being a Carmelite teacher.
During college she worked at Shawnee Mission Medical Center as medical transcription administrator. Debbie was soon hired as a second-grade schoolteacher (pictured above) with the Shawnee Mission School District and taught kindergarten and second grade at Santa Fe Trail Elementary School in Shawnee Mission, KS. She loved her students and spent many hours after school with parent teacher conferences. In May 1981, Debbie was working part-time at Shawnee Mission Medical Center while teaching full-time where she met Michael, a hospital loss prevention officer. They dated for a couple of years and attended marriage enrichment classes in preparation to join in holy matrimony.
On August 8th, 1983, they were married at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. For many years, they were blessed with good health, until one day in 2013, Debbie was diagnosed with Leukemia. She battled cancer in KU Medical Center in need of a bone marrow transplant to survive. A young college student by the name of Braden while attending Benedictine College agreed to donate his bone marrow one day if ever asked. A few weeks later, Braden was mysteriously contacted by the KU Bone Marrow Transplant Office and was asked to fly to St. Louis to make his marrow donation for a woman who was dying. He flew to St. Louis, donated his marrow, and almost a year later he met Debbie the lady who his bone marrow saved!
A reunion followed where Braden and his family one day would meet Debbie and Michael’s family and they shared a special kinship. Debbie was cancer free for many years, and her husband, brothers, mother, nieces, nephews, and friends treasured their relationship with her.
On the 10th anniversary of being cancer free, she was told by the doctors at KU Medical Center that she was now diagnosed with a deadly Sarcoma Acute Myeloid Leukemia with no cure. She was hospitalized and went to heaven on May 1st, which was coincidently, the feast day for St. Joseph the Worker. She passed away during the recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:44 in the afternoon.
Over Debbie’s lifetime, she lost her Grandmother Mary Milke & Niece Patricia Stacy, her father John E. Stacy Jr., her Mother & Father-in-Law, Edward and Joann Schafer, her beloved Aunt Francis, along with many other loving aunts, uncles and loved ones.
Debbie is survived by her loving husband Michael, her Mother, Betty Stacy, loving brothers: Brian and Janet Stacy, Dennis and Melody Stacy, Kevin and Deanna Stacy, Sister-In-Law Theresa and Doug McKenna, and her many nieces, nephews and loved ones. Funeral services will be held at:
The Church of the Nativity, 3800 W. 119th Street Leawood, Kansas on Wednesday May 10th with a Rosary at 9:30 AM, a tribute to Deborah at 10:00 AM with a Catholic Mass to follow at 10:30 AM. John P. Murry - December 10, 1933 - April 20, 2023

Departed: 04/20/2023 (Kansas City)
Obituary Preview: A live stream will begin when the Eulogy starts around 10:45 am CST on Monday, May 1, 2023. To view, please click on the blue "Watch Event" button under the "Events" section, or visit the following link: https://www.facebook.com/MuehlebachFuneralCare
John Patrick Murry, 89, went to his eternal rest on April 20, 2023, at his home in Overland Park, KS surrounded by family and with the knowledge that God had him firmly in HIS hands. A rosary will be said at 9:30 AM for John on Monday, May 1, 2023, at St. Thomas More Church followed by a visitation at 10AM and Mass at 11AM. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 2:30PM.
John was born in Delia, KS on December 10, 1933, to Roy and Elizabeth Murry, whom he lovingly referred to as saints. He later moved to St. Mary’s, KS where he was raised with the values that defined his life: honest, hard work from his “Daddy,” a stone mason; the importance of education from his “Momma,” an educator and school principal; love for his family, pride in his Irish Catholic heritage, and most importantly, his faith in God. He is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Johnson and Mary Ann Swerczek; and predeceased by his parents, his brother Roy Murry, and his sister Alice Siebert.
With his parents’ encouragement he left his beloved small town to attend college. His choice was Rockhurst College in Kansas City, MO where he developed a deep admiration for the Jesuit priests. The “Jebbies” as he fondly referred to them, ignited a passion for education at all levels where he eventually applied his talents to help others achieve their life goals. Later in life, Rockhurst honored him with their Outstanding Alumnus (1990) and the Xavier Medal of Honor (2018) awards for societal contributions. John’s greatest blessing while at Rockhurst was attending a high school prom as the blind date for a beautiful senior named Mary Margaret Devine. That date resulted in 66 years of marriage and four children: John Jr., from Iowa City, IA, James Francis (deceased infant), Kathleen Parker (Randy) from Leawood, KS, and Tim Murry (Maggie) in St. Louis, MO, 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was also beloved “Uncle John” to his 40 nieces and nephews and their families. Mary Margaret was the light of his life and the only one to match wits with him. She was his love, his soul mate, and biggest supporter as they walked through a full and happy life together.
John was a humble man who was generally unimpressed by degrees, awards, or community stature but rather was drawn to people by the content of their character. Although he seldom spoke of his own professional and community involvement, his family is quite proud of his achievements. John and Mary Margaret started their life together in Topeka where he taught middle school English and coached basketball. In 1958 he went to Kansas State University as Assistant to the Dean where he advised students while pursuing a graduate degree in counseling. That led the young Murrys back to Kansas City where John served as a guidance counselor at Ruskin High School for two years before returning to Kansas State to pursue a PhD in Higher Education Administration. It was in Manhattan where they raised their family and developed lifelong friends through the University and their parish, Seven Dolors.
John’s career shifted in 1971 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the U.S. Department of Education in Washington D.C. He returned to Kansas State and spent most of the next 19 years as Associate Dean of the Graduate School where he helped professors secure funding so they could achieve their research goals. John’s personal experiences in Catholic educational institutions, in part, motivated his decision to become President of Marymount College in Salina, KS (1981-1985), President of Donnelly College in Kansas City, KS (1987-1998), and Interim President of Benedictine College in Atchison, KS (2004-2005). In these capacities, he chaired the Kansas Independent College Association and was President of the Kansas Catholic College Association. He also chaired or served on the boards of many key community organizations concerning literacy, early-childhood development, low-income healthcare, and educational planning. He felt particularly honored to have been elected to serve as both a member and then chairperson of the National Advisory Council to the U.S. Council of Bishops. Upon his retirement, John spearheaded his family’s effort that registered over 40,000 people into the national bone marrow registry resulting in 160 lifesaving transplants, to date.
John will be remembered for his love of people and endearing sense of humor that made everyone feel respected, heard, and loved. He was a keen observer of people and became known to friends and family for his poems and stories that humorously memorialized everyday life experiences. With encouragement from his family, he researched and wrote a book, “Whence We Came,” telling the family’s immigration story from Ireland to Kansas, leaving a precious gift for his descendants. To those who knew him, the unwritten chapter of this book is of the author himself, a good man who had a twinkle in his eye and a kind word for everyone he met.
Note from Dad: “If you can’t come to the funeral don’t worry about it, I expect to be talking to the Lord anyway. Don’t send flowers. Instead send money to Donnelly College (https://www.donnelly.edu/give/give-now) or to the Benedictine Sisters in Atchison, KS (www.mountosb.org/donate/make-a-donation) who founded Donnelly, and is one fantastic community of women religious.”

Rosemary Schoenen - August 18, 1924 - April 15, 2023

Departed: 04/15/2023 (Kansas City)
Obituary Preview: Rosemary Schoenen passed away peacefully from natural causes on April 15, 2023 with family by her side at her home at Villa Ventura Assisted Living. At 98 years young, all who know and love her will recognize her distaste for mentioning her age at her passing.
Rosemary was born August 18, 1924, the oldest child of Stephen and Loretta Huber Schauwecker in Osage County, Missouri. She grew up on the family farm during the Great Depression and shared memories of her parents helping feed and shelter itinerant people passing through the area in search of work. She was expected to work hard to help her parents, look after younger siblings, and mastered the domestic arts at her mother’s side. In her youth she developed long-standing standards for cleanliness, godliness, and decorum. From youth, she was an expert seamstress. She excelled in school and remained curious and educated her entire life. A game of cards or dominoes, lively polka music, and social time for friends and family were foundational in her upbringing and instilled in her a life-long love of family time and holiday gatherings.
Rosemary attended high school in the nearby community of Westphalia, Missouri. There she met a sweet, handsome, kind boy (her description) named Frank Schoenen who became her husband on April 19, 1944. His poem about the love of family, penned before they graduated high school, hung in a small gold frame in her home for the next 80 years. They welcomed daughters Carol, Mary Pat and Lori and one son, Frank, over the next 16 years. Rosemary was a homemaker and kept things running smoothly at home while Frank worked at Missouri Pacific Truck Lines. Special memories were made during the years they visited her parents living in Jefferson City, Missouri and her three siblings, their growing families, along with her own brood, each had a dedicated room in the sprawling house on High St. Cousins bonded, Dads got happily rowdy, the Moms and Grandma cooked for the crowd; no one was permitted to miss Mass on Sunday.
Frank, Sr., died prematurely of leukemia in 1975. Following his death, Rosemary entered a new phase of her life by learning to drive a car and leave her home for work. She enjoyed work as an educational aide for students at Truman Elementary School, and later worked in administration for upper management at Zurich Insurance. She served for 12 years as chair of Jackson County Widows and Widowers. At St. Regis Catholic Church she became a Stephen’s Minister, was active in Befriender’s, was a Eucharistic Minister and served funeral luncheons. She was quick to volunteer, lend a hand, and a masterful organizer. She enjoyed her time with the Red Hatter’s, eating in restaurants, meeting church friends for weekend brunch at Benjamin Ranch, attending theatre and concert productions, and playing LOTS of bridge. Rosemary lived life to the fullest for as long as she was able, and it was only in the last few years of her life that she began truly slowing down.
Rosemary remains an inspiration to us all. She was proud of her German heritage, intelligent, strong, resourceful, and frugal. The sacrifices she made to support her children through college and beyond were made without complaint or judgement. She graciously donated her time and talents to causes she believed in, relied on her faith for guidance and strength, and saw the best in the people she loved. She was a doting grandma and delighted in the accomplishments of her children and their progeny. She leaves behind a legacy of goodness and sincerity, and we honor the impact she had upon us all. We will treasure her memory and miss her forever.
Rosemary is survived by her 3 daughters, Carol Nelson, Mary Pat Dodson, Lori Madden, and son, Frank.
She is also survived by one sister, Alice Mueller, and one brother, Harry Schauwecker. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, and one brother, Steve.
She leaves 7 grandchildren, 3 great-granddaughters, 3 great-grandsons and 1 great-great granddaughter.
The family wishes to especially thank Rosemary’s caregivers at Villa Ventura, the therapists at EmpowerMe Wellness and Elara Caring hospice who lovingly cared for our Mother in her final days.

Jerry was born December 7, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John William and Helen (Gerdelmann) Handley. His father died when he was quite young and Jerry and his brother were raised by his mother, his aunt and his grandmother. He grew up in an Irish-German neighborhood and attended St. Edward the Confessor Church and School and North Catholic High School, a school sponsored by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. He attended LaSalle College (now University) in Philadelphia and received a degree in business administration. He attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School and was awarded a Juris Doctor degree.
Upon college graduation, he was drafted by the Army and sent to basic training at Fort Riley which was his first experience of the Midwest. He served in the Army from 1966 to 1968 including a year in Viet Nam in the role of company clerk.
Upon return from military service, Jerry worked at Girard Bank and explored attending law school. Their courtship included many trips to the Jersey Shore and reinforced a lifetime love of the ocean.
In the fall of 1969, Jerry set off for law school at UMKC and Jerry and Sandy became engaged. Jerry and Sandy were married in St. William’s Church, Philadelphia on June 13, 1970 and in the fall of 1970 moved to Kansas City. Their intention was to return to Philadelphia, however life intervened and Kansas City became their permanent home.
Jerry completed law school as the Missouri Public Defender Organization was created and spent several exciting and productive years both as a law student and a new lawyer as a Public Defender. He eventually went into private criminal defense practice which proved very satisfying for him. Jerry received the Lon Hocker Trial Lawyer award from the Missouri Bar Foundation in 1977. He was a founder and the founding president of the Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He was selected to Best Lawyers in America (Criminal Law) for 27 consecutive years. He was frequently selected in Superlawyer and Best of the Bar publications. He was a fellow in the American Board of Criminal Lawyers and remained an active member of the organization until his retirement.
Jerry had a passion for criminal defense and for helping people and was always gratified when his legal efforts were fruitful. He also very much enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow lawyers and fellow defense lawyers.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra Martin Handley, his two children and their spouses, Christopher Matthew Handley (Kelly), Elizabeth Handley Borghardt (Nathan); and three grandchildren, Theodore Borghardt, Wesley Handley, and Bradley Handley.
Jerry found great joy in being a father and in the raising of his children and was actively involved in their lives, encouraging, coaching informally and formally and endlessly carpooling. He has equally enjoyed his grandchildren.
His other great passions were golf which he greatly enjoyed and Royals baseball. He was privileged to play on many great golf courses and collected a golf ball and a golf shirt at each. He enjoyed Royals season tickets and attending many games. The 2014 and 2015 seasons were a special joy.
Jerry is also survived by his brother, John Francis Handley (Mary Lou) and by three nephews and a niece, and four great nephews and six great nieces.

Salerno, Joseph J., baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection, Wednesday, March 22, 2023. Joseph, almost 93, passed away peacefully in his home with family at his side. He was born on May 17, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the oldest of four siblings Marilyn, Jimmy, Mike, and Frank. His parents Anthony and Josephine raised him with the core values of love of family, love of hard work, and a love of the Catholic faith.
Joseph attended St. Phillip High School in Chicago, Illinois, where he was captain of the football team. He enjoyed playing golf with his buddies Bob, Jim, and Frank as well as judging swimming and diving contests for his grandchildren, hosting the annual Papa NCAA March Madness brackets, and spending Sunday afternoons watching football and following his favorite teams.
He married Mary Frances Mendolia on January 29, 1955, at St. John’s Church in Kansas City, Missouri. His love and dedication to Mary, “his bride” of 57 years, was an example of a blessed marriage to their family and friends. Mary was taken to the Lord in 2011. He never truly understood why God took her before him and talked about it often. He missed her terribly but is now with his bride. Keeping his beloved Mary’s catchphrase alive, Joseph would respond “I love you more” each time someone would tell him they loved him. His work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit led him to open and own Advance Carpet. All six of his children worked for their father where they learned the importance of discipline, work ethic, and relationships. Joseph leaves behind his children Beth Ernst, Susan (Phillip, deceased) Bruno, Joan (John, deceased) Morrissey, Marynel (Hank) Collins, Tony (Mary) Salerno, Ahnna (Denny) Bruno. He was the loving Papa to his nineteen grandchildren: Bill, Chris (Sara), Anna (Patrick), Phillip (Megan), Maria, John Finney (Brittany), Katie, Julie (Jeremy), Joe Pat, Clair (Dan), Joe, Angeline (Tom), Nick, Tony, Grace, Joseph, Samantha, Nathan, and Madelynn. He was also blessed with fourteen great grandchildren:
Annemarie, Emmet, Colin, Lilyanna, Andrew, Nolan, Wyatt, Ollie, Finney, Margot, Franco, Gianna, Olivia, and Eliana.
Joseph will be missed by his sister-in-law Florence Leber, brothers Mike (Pat) and Frank (Linda) Salerno. Preceding him in death were his parents, Anthony and Josephine, sister Marilyn, brother Jim and sister-in-law Sophie, as well as nephews Mark and Jimmy Salerno. His many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will miss the joy that Joe brought into their lives. His traditions and memories will be cherished.
We want to especially thank his caregiver, Natalie Wilson, for the loving care she provided him. Also, we would like to thank the parishioners of St. Clare and everyone who has included Joseph in their prayers.

Fr. Gerald "Christopher" Darby - September 13, 1958 - March 18, 2023

Departed: 03/18/2023 (Kansas City)
Obituary Preview: A live stream will begin when the Rosary starts around 9:30 am CST on Thursday, March 22, 2023. To view the event, please click on following link: https://www.facebook.com/MuehlebachFuneralCare
The U.S. District of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of Fr. Christopher Darby, who died of a heart attack on Saturday, March 18.
Father had served as a priest for over twenty years and, providentially, gone to confession the night before. He received conditional Extreme Unction when it was discovered that he had collapsed. Father was known for his devotion to Our Lady and, by all appearances, was saying the rosary just before he died. We commend his soul to your prayers and share a brief biography and funeral information below. From the Verbum of summer, 2000:
"Fr. Christopher Darby has been ordained to the holy Priesthood, responding to a vocation that was born in the daily Latin Mass of his childhood. He was born on September 13, 1958, in a little town called Stayton, Oregon. Although his mother was not Catholic when he was born, she soon came into the Church through the influence of his paternal grandmother. When he was nine, his family moved to Portland, Oregon, and wound up in the most liberal parish in the city. Soon after, his parents lost the Faith and went on ‘a religious odyssey,’ going from church to church, winding up in a so-called ‘Bible church.’ Although he did not resist, young Christopher did not like their ‘worship services.’ After the death of his mother in 1982, Fr. Darby became very close to his grandmother and went to Mass with her frequently. Remembering the old Canon in English from the beginning of the liturgical revolution, he was appalled by the changes in the Mass prayers. He took an instant dislike to the new liturgy but resolved to return to the Church. He found in the “New Church” many of the same Protestant things he had wanted to leave behind, and he was “barely holding on” to the Faith.
One day, he came across an edition of The Wanderer, and he discovered that there were other Catholics who agreed that there were problems in the Church. Eventually, after becoming acquainted with Fr. Eugene Heidt, a friend of the Society in Oregon, he made his first Ignatian retreat in 1993. There, he felt a renewed desire to test a possible vocation to the Priesthood. Although he was concerned about his age, he applied to the Seminary and was accepted for the Fall class of 1994. He considers that the key to his preparation was learning to practice mental prayer faithfully.
Father Darby's first assignment was at St. Ignatius Retreat House in Ridgefield, CT, from where he took care of St. Jude's Church in Philadelphia, PA. He served in subsequent assignments in Post Falls, ID; Browerville, MN, where he served for a time as prior and cared for the Sisters of the SSPX at the Sacred Heart Novitiate; Chicago, IL; and, since 2020, as assistant pastor at St. Vincent's in Kansas City, MO.
Please join the priests and religious of the Society in praying for Father’s soul. May God quickly receive His good and faithful servant into the halls of Heaven. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
