Richard Gene Mannion - July 21, 1949 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Fayetteville)
Obituary Preview: Richard Gene Mannion, 74, passed away on May 2nd in Fayetteville, GA.
Son of Rose Mannion (La Rossa), and Robert E. Mannion, he was born July 21, 1949 in New York City. He graduated Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School in 1967 and attended the University of Maryland shortly after, where, during that time, he proudly served in the U.S. National Guard during the Vietnam War. With his degree in hand and the dream of opportunity in his eyes, he did what many aspiring graduates would do – drove back home to live with his parents. After spending some time in the Washington, DC area, he flew south for the winter and decided to stay a little longer. In Atlanta, Richard would come to meet the love of his life in Janet Battle and get the job of most of his life in Delta Airlines. Following an early retirement, he found his calling in education, where he enraptured the minds of thousands of his students during his tenure at Whitewater Middle School. One of Richard’s greatest achievements was earning his Ph.D. in history from Georgia State University, and he would later use that expertise to teach American history at Clayton State University and Kennesaw State University. He literally lived and breathed the subject matter and always put 110 percent of effort into his teaching. The love he gave to his students through his teaching came back to him ten-fold.
He was preceded to heaven by his mother and father and aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife and mother of his children, Janet Battle Mannion of Fayetteville, GA; their children: Richard Grant Mannion of Atlanta, GA, Mary Elizabeth Mannion Geller of Little Rock, AR and husband Scott, Bradley Martin Mannion of Washington, DC and wife Margaret, Katie Rose Mannion Donia of Fayetteville, GA and husband Daniel; brother Robert Mannion of St. Louis, MO and wife Sonja; as well as many, many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Richard was a deeply beloved father, uncle, cousin, brother, and friend. His passing was peaceful and with family, including his beloved dog and best friend Ham.
While we lost our most beloved dad, many have lost a friend, a coach, a mentor, a National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation-themed party planner and loved one in him. He was always up to tell stories of the good old days, no matter how many times you heard them. He would be the first to let you know you had a bad shot in golf just as quickly as he would tell you how great it is to be an Italian from New York or, as he would call it, “my city.” Above all else, he gave his loved ones all of his heart and always fought for those closest to him, even to the end.
It was his wish that we laugh and reminisce, and smile together during this time.

Jeanette is survived by her daughter, Wendy Butler (the late Mitch Butler), and sons Scott (Joy), Brian (Joanie), and Kevin (Amy), as well as her three brothers, a sister, and numerous in-laws. She has eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with a third on the way. She is preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Louise Jackson, her son-in-law Mitch Butler, and her college sweetheart and husband of 62 years, Charles. Jeanette was born July 4, 1934, in Cottonwood, Alabama. Her family moved to Columbus, GA, where she attended and graduated from Jordan High School, (In twelve years of school she only missed one day). She immediately enrolled in the University of Georgia and became active in student activities, majoring in journalism at the University’s Henry Grady College of Journalism. Jeanette always took pride in the fact that she was the first female sports editor of the famous UGA newspaper, The Red and Black, and authored a regular sports column she entitled “Through The Knothole.”
It was at UGA that she met Charles Ballard. They married in 1957 on campus and set up housekeeping in a rented mobile home not far from campus. Jeanette graduated and held several jobs including work at the Georgia Forestry Commission and as a civilian office worker at Fort Benning.
In 1962, when Charles was honorably discharged from the Army, he and Jeanette came back to Charles’ hometown of Fayetteville and Jeanette became involved in the Fayetteville First Baptist Church which she faithfully attended for the rest of her life. She was active with the Woman’s Missionary Union, led Girls in Action groups, volunteered for Vacation Bible School, served on committees, and taught Sunday school classes for decades. In fact, prior to her death she was substituting for the regular teacher of her Sunday school class for several weeks.
Tireless and devoted to any pursuit she attempted, she was a team mother for her children’s sports activities, active in Parent Teacher Organizations, and a model wife and mother. She adored her grandchildren, who of course will always adore her.
After her children were grown, she worked for ten years as an executive assistant to the Provost of Georgia State University. She loved participating in the administration for a major university and enjoyed the interactions with students that she met.
In her last years, she became a shareholder, director, and Vice President for Petroflame, Inc.
Her entire life was one of service—service to God and her church, service to her community, and generous, absolute devotion to her family and friends.

Richard Alan Brown - December 13, 1977 - April 24, 2024

Departed: 04/24/2024 (Fayetteville)
Obituary Preview: Richard Alan Brown came to us via his earthly parents on December 13th, 1977, at the ripe old age of…umm…newborn!
Alan to those he liked, Bubba & Uncle Bubba to those he loved the life he led was one packed with adventure and “hold my beer” moments. From camping with his Uncle Nels, to watching UGA beat Tech with his dad, to teaching his “little buddy” James to fish, to working on cars with his nephew & sharing a love of drawing with his niece, Bubba was a jack of all trades & a lover of many things.
As his life was far too brief for those of us left to go on without him when he said “duces” on April 24th, 2024, we’re sure his greeting in Heaven by those gone before was one to behold. I’m sure his dad, Ricky, was eager to show him the best seats in the house for UGA games! His Grandma, Carol Nielsen, had a place ready for him to sit with her while she painted & sewed. His Nanny Jean Brown had her cooking waiting at the table for him to eat. His Pawpaw Hugh Brown poured a cold one and patted the seat beside him. His Uncle Nels took him to the riverbank, where a tent & ‘rafting burgers’ were on the grill. His Aunt Gail had the party going with music up, and his Uncle Ray punched the gas in his hotrod making sure he was watching. I’m sure Big Mike picked him up in his favorite low-rider and took him cruisin’ to all his favorite haunts. The sweetest of all were the family members he had never met. Like his grandfather, Richrd Nielsen. I’m sure heaven is sweeter after the hug they shared.
Here on earth are many who will never stop loving Alan. Left to figure out how to start the lawn mower is his mother, Evelyn-Carol Brown. The bond they shared went above and beyond, like Alan said, their love is eternal. Don’t worry Bubba, Dom’s got her. His sister, Adrianne Williams, and her husband Jason, now must hold down the fort for their children, Dalton and Lexi. His Aunt Christina now has to cook all the good food and I guess the rest of us will have to eat it. Alan had many cousins, But Crystal and her husband Jonathan, Brittany and her husband David, Rachael and her husband Andrew, Sean and his wife Sammy, along with Wendell Ray, will now have to put up with each other without him as a buffer. Thanks, Bubba….
The best way to honor the life that was our Bubba is to sit around a bonfire and tell stories. Big ones, like when whitewater rafting, we almost died. (not really, but it felt like it). Small ones, like the way he danced when Linkin Park came on the radio.
And in the end, it really did matter, Bubba. Live like him. Love like your life depends on it, and live like there’s no tomorrow…..

Douglas Delaney Treadway - October 26, 1947 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Fayetteville)
Obituary Preview: Douglas Delaney Treadway, 76, of Fayetteville passed away April 4, 2024. He was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on October 26, 1947, to the late Chester Blaine, Jr. and Byrnina Treadway. Douglas grew up in Miami, Florida, with two older brothers, Chester Blaine III, who now lives with his wife, Linda, in Cocoa, FL, and Brian, who tragically passed three days prior to Doug, leaving behind his wife, Debbie, in Aurora, CO. Doug proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard, before going to work on the Coral Gables, FL, police force. He left the police force for a career with Delta Air Lines, and eventually retired from Delta in 2005.
Douglas is survived by his bride of 55 years, Barbara Treadway; his children, Shawn (Kevin) Danforth and Douglas (Renee) Treadway, Jr.; his granddaughter, Caitlin (Alex) Treadway; and his great-granddaughter, Sophia.
A (mostly) quiet man, Doug was a tremendous provider for his family and took great pride in his wife, Barb, and his grandchildren, Cait and Sophie. He was always there for his kids, Shawn and Doug, and became a great friend as well as father to both as they grew older. He loved his dog, Fate, and could spend hours at the kitchen table, looking out at the birds feasting on the food that he put out for them. He enjoyed traveling, talking to his far-flung family and watching Jeopardy (with Alex Trebek) and Wheel of Fortune.
He leaves behind countless friends. People that he grew up with, went to high school with, and worked with are all devastated by this news. His time as a police officer in Florida was much briefer than his career with Delta, but he still has friends from that period. The world is now poorer, missing this calm and gentle soul.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM on April 27, 2024 at Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville.
