Raphael Joseph-Marie Vilawanou Ganmavo - July 12, 2021 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Woodbridge)
Obituary Preview: Raphaël Joseph-Marie Vilawanou was born on July 12, 2021. He was born with a congenital heart disease Hipoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). He spent the first nine months of his life at Children National DC with mommy or daddy always by him. He was never alone from the beginning until the end. He’d undergo several surgical procedures of which two open-heart surgeries : first one at less than 3 months of age and the second at 7 months. He was loved by many and known for his big and bright eyes, heart-melting smiles and giggles. He was very social with a strong personality.Raphael would eventually come home for the first time in April 2022. But, a few weeks later he was readmitted. During that short stay, it was discovered that one of his lungs had died. The team recommended transplant or to let nature take its course.
After several months waiting and rejected by many, in October 2022, mom and dad took a leap of faith, and drove 10 hours to take him to Boston in hope to give Raphael the best chance. He was welcomed and cared for by the best and most compassionate professionals. After Nine months, Raphael came back to VA. He was transferred to Inova Fairfax and eventually came home in June 2023. Raphael will spend the following months in and out of the hospital. But during his time at home, he tried to have the best fun possible with his family and anyone willing to join.
Older sister Andra was his little mommy doing everything mommy would do. Younger sister Allyson was the best therapist, teacher, disciplinarian and movie companion he’d ever asked for; together they also form the « big eyes team ». Brother Bégnon was his wrestling buddy. Daddy was his devoted driver, carrying him in one arm and all his equipment in the other, taking him to explore the world around him. Mommy was at his side everywhere he goes and during all his hospital stays. Raphael loves books, stacking rings, and to watch Disney movies. His favorites were: Moana ( he’d watch Moana all day if allowed during his first year), Encanto, Coco but mostly Sing and Sing 2. He also loves Bubble Guppies. He was a chocolate guy. Not sure if he was aiming for fashion design, but he loves to touch any fabric and had a deep love for washcloth. Although, he was still working on his verbal skills, he was know to be very expressive. When not happy, he’d frown his face; he’d roll his eyes on you and they were so big that you couldn’t miss the message. His little hands or thin arms could stop as many big hands that come after him. Despite his feisty side, he was popular because of his kind, playful, joyful and warm personality. He’d clap for anyone he was happy with.
Raphael defied many odds about him. He was given max a year. Then, he was given two if lucky. He had a lot of challenges, but he would take on each one. In March, he eventually got sick and was admitted to Inova. After a month, he was transferred back to Boston. He was getting better. Dad and his siblings had made it to Boston to cheer him up. They never had the chance to do that like they wanted as Raphael was intubated. Then on that Wednesday, May 1,2024 he decided it was his day. Nothing could stop him. Everyone who cared for him knows that Raphael rolls on his own plans. He left this world in his devoted mother's loving arms, with his beloved father and doting siblings, and the wonderful medical team who saw him as Raphael and not his prognosis, surrounding him.
With the challenges he endured at his tender age, he was a pediatric medical marvel, surprising many hospital professionals time and time again when his little body rallied during trying moments in his critical care. While we firmly believe that God heard and answered many prayers for his unexpected longevity, we know, too, that many doctors, surgeons, nurses, and hospital support staff played an important role in helping him to live life and make joyful memories with his loved ones. For all those that had a hand in his care, or sustained him with prayers, we express to you our deepest gratitude.
Raphael came to this world as a surprise. He left by surprise. He only had two years and nine months, but he touched many people and taught us a lot backed by his own experience. He showed us what resilience means, and how not to let the daily challenges of our lives take our smile away from us or steal our true-self. To God The Glory! Contributions can be made in Raphaël's name to the Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation

She married her sweetheart, Leon Frederick Jackson, on June 12, 1948 and enjoyed a long and happy life together for 61 years. He preceded her in death on December 24, 2009.
Marge was a lifelong learner and interested in everything around her. A voracious reader, she always had a book on any given topic by her side. Nutrition, cooking, gardening, flower arranging, history, genealogy, animals and spirituality were just some of the topics greatly enjoyed, and she always had another book lined up to read. She also found joy in jigsaw puzzles, card and board games, as well as dining with and/or celebrating family events with her loved ones. Her first love, after her husband and family, was quilting. She made sure all of her children were raised as cradle Episcopalians but allowed them to make their own religious decisions once out of the nest. Her joy and love of the services and opportunities to serve in the church were always very apparent and filled a large part of her life.
Marge is survived by six of her seven children: Nina T. Droubay (Jeffray), Anne C. Cole (Joe), Wayne F. Jackson (Mira), Jill M. Fritz, Gail K. Kemble (Norman) and Harry D. Droubay, Connor W. Cole, Kinsley E. Jackson, Emma R. Jackson, Adeline M. Jackson and Hayden L. Jackson.

Daniel Wolfe Jacobowitz - February 27, 1943 - February 03, 2024

Departed: 02/03/2024 (Woodbridge)
Obituary Preview: Colonel Daniel Wolfe Jacobowitz, USAF-RET, died peacefully at his home in Lorton, Virginia, surrounded by loved ones.
He went by many names: Danny to the family he was born into in and his childhood friends, Jake to his friends and colleagues in the military, and Loong Jac (Uncle Jac) to the raucous extended family he married into. But all knew him as a smart, kind, patient, chivalrous man who built a warm and joy-filled home with his devoted wife of nearly 50 years, Saifon Jacobowitz.
Jake lived a life defined, primarily, by love – love for his family, for his career, for his country, and for every single individual who ever stepped into his homes, all across the world. To him, there was no greater privilege than spending time with his large extended family, from world-famous Thanksgiving spreads that welcomed nearly 100 souls to tables absolutely groaning with the most delicious Thai and American food ever, or casual gatherings punctuated by intellectual conversation and endless laughter.
Many may remember Jake primarily for his impressive professional achievements, some of which you’re still not allowed to know about. Before that, he graduated from Rutherford High School in 1961, where he lettered in both varsity soccer and tennis. He attended Pacific University in Oregon, earning a spot on the Dean’s List. After realizing, as he said, that any school that would allow him on their Dean’s List should probably raise their standards, he transferred to Rutgers University on scholarship. There, he worked as both a garbage man and a bus driver, so please be assured he knew a thing or two about hard work.
Following graduation, he joined the United States Air Force as an officer, where he found his true calling. Here, he excelled, beginning his career in Missile Defense before working in Humanitarian Outreach in Thailand, where he met his beautiful bride and swept her off to the wilds of Alabama. There he attended the Squadron Officer School, then attended and was an instructor at the Air Command and Staff College. He attended the Air War College there as well, and after a brief stint in Korea, the family settled in the Northern Virginia a rea. For most of his career, he was a world-renowned expert in Psychological Operations, and authored many texts still in use by the military. When he finally retired after 27 years as Colonel, he was both highly distinguished and highly-decorated, receiving [list the awards here].
Before Alzheimer’s robbed him of his magnificent mind, he had many hobbies that kept him active. He dearly loved woodworking and built many of the cherished pieces of furniture still in his home. He loved to read and had a large library that spanned from Military History to European History to Middle Eastern History and a bunch of thrillers in-between. In the early days he exulted in taking his kids and others on his deeply treasured 25’foot sailboat - trips that Saifon could do without, thank you very much. From playing catch with his sons to puttering around the house fixing things we’re fairly certain he broke, he was always at work, making things right.
And though his family is proud of his professional stature, he will primarily be remembered as a patient and kind man who never raised his voice in anger and loved everyone fully. And though his children are extremely average people, Jake radiated with pride at their accomplishments, supporting them unconditionally even as they pursued a handful of extremely untenable careers or half-hearted hobbies. And you cannot speak of Jake without remarking on the deep and abiding love he felt for his wife, Saifon, a love so deep that it serves as a model to anyone lucky enough to witness it.
Jake is survived by his wife, Saifon; his eldest son, Norman, daughter-in-law Hattie, and their son, Kiet of Fairfax, VA; his daughter, Malina Jacobowitz, and her daughters Ailsa and Lillian Tierney; his youngest son, Adam Jacobowitz, and his sons Johnathan and Kaleb of Richmond, VA; Shomari Dingle, of Stafford, Virginia; his sister, Frances (Jacobowitz) Metcalf and brother-in-law Charles Metcalf of McDonald, PA; his sister-in-law Roberta Moss of Marblehead, MA, and many cousins. Each will miss him beyond words.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Sylvia (Gunsberg) Jacobowitz, his formidable older sister, Ellen J. Stein, and his charming little brother, Roy A. Jacobowitz, with whom he would spend hours debating every topic under the sun. The family has taken much comfort in the idea that Jake can now catch up with so many of his loved ones in the Great Unknown, including his beloved mother-in-law, Boonchuy Kokphae and his delightful nephew, Alexander Moss Jacobowitz.
Services will be held on February 15, 2024, at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home in Woodbridge, VA at 9am with interment with full military honors at Quantico National Cemetery at 11am. A wake at the Marine Corps Museum will follow.
