Naomi Kash Lindon - August 22, 1934 - April 19, 2022

Departed: 04/19/2022 (Vandalia)
Obituary Preview: LINDON, Naomi, (Kash), 87, of Vandalia, passed away Tuesday, Apr. 19, 2022. She was born August 22, 1934, in Gilmore, Kentucky. The child of Edward “Judge” Kash and Ruby Gibbs Kash, Naomi graduated valedictorian of Hazel Green Academy. After marrying Harold Lindon on December 23, 1952, and moving to Dayton, Ohio, the hills of eastern Kentucky remained firmly imprinted on her heart for the rest of her life. Her only child, H. Dale Lindon, was born in 1955. It is doubtful any son was more adored by his mother or was the source of more joy and pride. She took Dale “down home” to Gilmore for the weekend (and eventually whole summers) at every chance, so he could be surrounded by their loving extended family and experience the land and people that helped form her inimitable character. The only two people who could rival her affection for her son Dale were his children, her grandson, William, and granddaughter Polly. As a toddler, too young to pronounce “Mamaw,” William dubbed her “Mammam,” which she considered the highest honorific of her life.
It was a rare occasion during her nine decades in which Naomi Lindon was ever shy about giving her trademark frank and staunch opinion. Those on the receiving end of such advice might have initially been taken aback; but, without fail, Naomi’s advice, drawn from a deep well of love, faith, and lifetime of sharp observation, inevitably imparted wisdom profound enough to make your head spin.
Naomi was a woman of deep and abiding faith, and her love and trust of God were a great comfort to her throughout her life. She was a fixture at First Light Baptist Church on Sunday mornings, along with attending weekly bible studies. Her unwavering faith undoubtedly comforted her in her final days, as it did those close to her. Though she will live on in the hearts and minds of those who held her dear, the world is a less bright place without her.
Naomi Lindon is predeceased by her parents Edward and Ruby Kash, her brother Bobby Kash, and her husband Harold Lindon. She is survived by her son, H. Dale Lindon (Pamela), grandson William Lindon, granddaughter Polly Elrod (Christopher), sister Wanda Tabor (Lee), aunt Rosa Frances Lane, Meredia Simpson, and Lowell Thompson.
A visitation will be held at Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home (139 South Dixie Drive, Vandalia, Ohio, 45377) on Friday, April 22, at 5 p.m., immediately followed by a memorial service at 6:30 p.m.

Larry S. Shaner - September 22, 1937 - February 18, 2022

Departed: 02/18/2022 (Vandalia)
Obituary Preview: Shaner, Larry S
Born September 22, 1937 in Greenville, Ohio. Passed away February 18, 2022 after a courageous battle with COVID-19.  Larry is survived by his wife Sharon Shaner (Manson)Tipp City, Ohio, Son Barry Shaner (Penny) of Myrtle Beach South Carolina, Daughter’s Brenda Shaner (Connie) and Cindy Shaner of Cincinnati, Ohio, Step-Son Doug Manson (Barb), Miamisburg, Ohio and Step- Daughter, Trisha Williams (Don) of Atlanta Georgia, Nennia Seagraves, Mother of his grandchildren, Vandalia, Ohio,  two grandsons Nick Shaner of Oregon and Jason Shaner of South Carolina, two great grandsons Levi Hayslett and Logan Hayslett of Vandalia, Ohio and many other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Edith Virginia Shaner (Campbell) and Granddaughter, Diana Hayslett (Shaner).
Larry was the only child of Earnest and Hazel Shaner (Petry). His early years were spent on a farm with his Grandma and Grandpa Petry where his Grandpa taught him the value of hard work and self-reliance.  His Grandpa also taught him, if there is something you haven’t done or don’t know how to do “figure it out”. Sometimes that meant dropping the engine out of a truck for repair or running electric from the house to the barn.  He attended Roosevelt school and played football.  Larry told a story about how he was so little and had bird legs but still got picked first in games because he was so fast.  His teen years were spent in Dayton where his first job was setting pins at a bowling alley to help his single mother pay the bills.  He worked on race cars with his best friend in his spare time.  He credits an older man at one of his first jobs with recognizing his work ethic and problem-solving skills for getting him a spot as a tool maker apprenticeship at NCR.  One of the things that Larry was most proud of (beside his hole in 1 at a local golf course) was that he came from a single parent home, living in government housing to becoming a respected Tool and Die Sales Engineer all over the Midwest. He started and ran a sister company, AFC Stamping for his employer AFC Tool that did business with companies like Honda.  He won a prestigious award from Honda. The award required his team to be on time with deliveries to the minute and be accurate to the millimeter on millions of parts.  Larry retired as the Vice President of AFC. After he retired he played a lot of golf and flipped houses with his brother in law Ron Harshman.
Larry was the proudest of being a good family man.  He deeply loved his family and friends. He was extremely loyal & caring until the very end.  There will be a private family service and he will be laid to rest at Poplar Hill Cemetery.  He will be sadly missed by all who had the opportunity to know and love him but all he taught us, the way he loved us and his legacy will live on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, accomplishments, and surviving family members. It is often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, share their story, and provide details about funeral services and memorial contributions.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and be able to provide accurate information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about funeral services, memorial contributions, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published on. Generally, obituaries range from 100 to 500 words. It's essential to check with the publication or website for their specific guidelines on word count and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online website?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or website. You can usually find submission guidelines on their website or by contacting their customer service department directly. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, photo(s), and payment information (if applicable).

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or website. Some newspapers and websites offer free obituaries, while others charge by the word or line. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for a single publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the final version to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

What if I need to correct an error in an already-published obituary?

If you discover an error in a published obituary, contact the publication or website immediately. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary. However, this is not always possible, especially with print newspapers.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Just be sure to store the document in a safe place where it can be easily accessed by your loved ones when the time comes.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If the deceased person had sensitive or private information they wouldn't want shared publicly (e.g., health issues, personal struggles), it's best to exclude it from the obituary or phrase it delicately. Remember that the goal of an obituary is to celebrate the person's life, not sensationalize their struggles.

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

If you're struggling with what information to include or how to phrase certain details, consider consulting with a funeral director, grief counselor, or trusted friend or family member for guidance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Can I create a memorial webpage or tribute site in addition to an obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms offer tools for creating memorial webpages or tribute sites where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences. These can serve as a lasting tribute to the deceased person.
