Together, they were blessed with four children, Steven, John, Carolyn, and Patti. They moved to the home farm on Iris Ave in 1953 along with Don’s widowed father, Arthur Kregel. Don farmed later with his two sons, Steve and John. In November of 1973, they moved to the St. Olaf farm and lived there for 20 years. Betty and Don built a house in Garnavillo and moved there in 1992.
Betty (Lawson) Kregel accepted the Lord Jesus as her Savior in the spring of 1940. She lived in Chicago until her marriage when she moved to Garnavillo, IA and became a young farm wife. She quickly learned to garden, sew, cook, bake, and drive a car. Her sweet rolls were a universal favorite. Her hospitality was enjoyed by friends and family for decades. In 1982, she organized a family reunion that brought together her entire family from across the country. The reunions have grown and continued for 40 years.
Betty greatly enjoyed a game of Rummikub or Scrabble with anyone who was up to the challenge. She took up china painting in her 50’s, her artistic ability is evident in all the pieces she created. Many loved ones cherish her creations in their homes to this day. Wherever Betty went, she took the gospel message with her. She never left the house without a gospel tract to share and struck up conversation with anyone willing to listen. Her kindness was evident in her bright smile and genuine affection.
Even now, Betty remains a pillar of faith to her entire family. Her loss is deeply felt, but her loved ones know she’s resting in the arms of her Savior.
Betty is survived by three brothers: Ted (Jeanette) Lawson, Bob Lawson, Jack (Edna) Lawson; sister-in-law, Lee Lawson; children: Steve (Lynn) Kregel, John (Esther) Kregel, Carolyn (Daryl) Aspenson, Patti (Carl) Uhlenhopp; 14 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Frances Dixon; in-laws, Clyde Dixon, and Virginia Lawson.

Michael L. Coughlin - November 25, 1956 - September 05, 2023

Departed: 09/05/2023 (Garnavillo)
Obituary Preview: GARNAVILLO, IOWA
Michael Lynn Coughlin, 66, of Garnavillo, Iowa passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa due to complications following heart bypass surgery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo. Visitation will continue at the Garnavillo Gospel Hall at 10 a.m. prior to the funeral service which will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, with burial to follow at Garnavillo City Cemetery.
Michael was born on November 25th, 1956, in Kenmare, ND, into the loving home of Mert and Janet Coughlin. He joined older brothers, Mark and Kevin, and was later joined by younger siblings, brother, Curtis and sister, Connie. His most endearing childhood memory was his mother's scripture flash cards and being taught to love and serve God. He excelled in everything he took an interest in; academics, football, basketball, golf, music and singing. He graduated as valedictorian of his high school class in 1975.
He attended Northwestern College in Roseville, Minnesota, where he received his associate degree in Business Accounting. There, he met his beloved wife Julia. They married on August 18, 1979, in Garnavillo Iowa and recently celebrated 44 years together. They enjoyed spending time working on their historic home together. He never feared learning a new skill whether it be plumbing, electrical, drywall, tile etc. He worked lovingly on a perpetual to-do list.
He completed his education by earning a Bachelor's degree in business management and Master's degree in School Finance. He worked as business manager of Garnavillo Community Schools for 11 years where he helped with the transition of a sharing arrangement that became Clayton Ridge Schools. He later worked at the Prairie du Chien Community Schools for 11 years. He was hired as the CFO of Waterloo Community School in 2007 where he enjoyed the challenge of making numbers work while facilitating the needs of the district.
He enjoyed the fellowship of believers at the Garnavillo Gospel Hall for many years and was a source of encouragement to many there. He was most grateful for the nail scarred hands of his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, whose love helped direct his life.
His greatest legacy is his family to whom he was devoted. He had 6 "favorite" children and found the utmost joy in every new grandchild. He was a selfless father that led through example, teaching with patience and long suffering. He gave up many evenings at home due to furthering his education, long commutes and attending strategic plan meetings so Julia could stay home and care for their children.
He will be profoundly missed and held in high honor by his faithful and devoted wife, Julia, and his proud and loving children: Joshua (Ann) Coughlin of Garnavillo, IA; Christianna (Justin) Aspenson of Seneca, WI; Charitina (Cade) Loven of Decorah, IA; Jason Coughlin of Garnavillo, IA, Cherisha (Nathaniel) Levy of Enfield, NS Canada; Jesse Coughlin of Cedar Rapids, IA and 20 "perfect" grandchildren: Chase, Livea, Carter, Jonah, Christian, Naomi, Sophia, Nora, Isabella, Titus, Selah, Cruz, Opal, Jaida, Emma, Asher, Caius, Wesley, Hadessah and Elizabeth; ages 16 to 6 months. His siblings, Mark (Vicki) Coughlin of Hugo, MN; Kevin (Carol) Coughlin of Lincoln, NE; Curtis (Tamera) of Omaha, NE and Connie (Greg) Norrie of Minot, ND; nieces and nephews and many other family.
He will be greeted in heaven by his beloved parents. Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo is assisting the family and information is available at www.morrisfuneralhomes.com. Memorials may be sent to Morris Funeral Home (in care of Michael Coughlin) 207 South 1 st St, Guttenberg, IA 52052

Naomi J. Klinge - October 16, 1925 - May 06, 2023

Departed: 05/06/2023 (Garnavillo)
Obituary Preview: GARNAVILLO, IOWA
Naomi Jeanette Klinge was born on October 16, 1925 to Otto and Auguste Siebrecht on the family farm south of Garnavillo. She was the youngest of three children by nearly 10 years. Her brother was Valmah and her sister was Alice. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Garnavillo.
She had a very pleasant and peaceful childhood. Besides time with both her parents, her grandmother Schaefermeier lived with them and she was able to get to know her, too. She attended the Eagle District School which was just a short walk from her home. After the 8th grade, she continued her education in town and graduated in 1943. It was the summer of ’42 when Naomi met her future husband, Cliff Klinge at Lakeside Ballroom.
WW II had begun and more nurses were needed, so the Cadet Nurses’ Program was established. After high school graduation, her mom and sister took her to Findley School of Nursing in Dubuque and “signed her up”. The next 4 years were very rewarding for Naomi. She was in a class of 12 and she became very close to all of them, but particularly close to 4 with whom she remained life-long friends. Findley depended on two different hospitals for specific training, so she traveled to St. Louis for psychiatric training and to Akron, Ohio for pediatrics training. The day she arrived in Akron was V-J day and she remembers a huge celebration at the train station.
She and her classmates graduated in 1946 and she began her first job attending to polio patients confined to iron lungs at the Minnesota State University hospital. She remained in contact with the families of several patients and actually reconnected with one patient’s sister just last year. 75 years after graduating, she received an honor quilt from the Clayton County Veteran's Association for her service.
She and Cliff were engaged to be married, so she moved to Iowa City to work for Mercy Hospital to be closer to home. She and Cliff were married at St. Paul’s on November 15, 1947. They moved to Luana where they owned/operated a stock yards and trucking business. It was there that they began their family with Lew in 1948 and Jody in 1951. They also became active with a group of contemporaries and socialized, played euchre, and fished together. Of the 6 couples, Naomi was the last survivor.
In 1957, they sold the stockyards and moved to Postville where Cliff continued his trucking business, and Naomi resumed her nursing career at the Postville Community Hospital. They expanded their family with Lisa in 1959 and Kirby in 1961. Cliff was driving and gone for many days a week and Naomi was often responsible for raising 4 children, maintaining a home and working part-time at the hospital.
In 1970, they sold the semi-trucks and Cliff began local trucking, so they built a new home in Clermont where Lisa and Kirby continued school and Naomi continued working in Postville. In Clermont, they also made a nice circle of friends and began traveling more. All four of their children graduated from college and led successful lives. When they became empty-nesters, they relocated to Garnavillo and “picked up where they left off” many years earlier. Cliff and Naomi became active with the timber, which had been in her family since 1852. This is also when they did major traveling, RV’ing with a group to Alaska and then down to Belize, Central America. They also traveled with their children to Germany and met distant relatives. To celebrate their 75th birthdays, the entire family traveled to Nashville for the Grand Ole Opry and on their 50th wedding anniversary, the entire family went on a Caribbean cruise.
Naomi had at least 4 brushes with death and after the third one, the decision was made to sell their home and move to the Tower Living Center in Garnavillo. Cliff died in 2014 and Naomi continued to live in Garnavillo until 2021 when she moved to Ames to be near Lew, Jody and Kirby.
Naomi died peacefully on May 6, 2023, National Nurses’ Day. She was 97 years old and had 96 really good years.
She is survived by her children: Lew, Jody and Kirby (Kathy), as well as 6 grandchildren: Chaldon and Courtney Wooge, Lauren Richter and Carson Jarm, Aaron and Ryan Klinge, also 4 great-grandchildren: Alex Wooge, Evie Wooge, Brooks Richter and Reese Jarm, and a son-in-law, Jim Burt.
She was preceded in death by Cliff, sadly, her daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law, Gaylord Wooge.
All four of her major life-long events were performed at St. Paul’s – baptism, confirmation, marriage and eulogy. She will be inurned next to Cliff in the Garnavillo Cemetery in a plot with her grandparents Schaefermeier, and her parents. She was a wonderful Mom!
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 14, 2023 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Inurnment will follow at Garnavillo City Cemetery.
