Obituary Preview: Augusta-Lois Purcell Sweet, 79, died Sunday May 12, 2024 at Kenton Pointe Care Center in Maysville, KY.  She was born in Mason Co., KY on August 23, 1944 to the late Thomas I. and Emogene King Purcell.  She was a member of Dover Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis Sweet, and her children, Karen (Emery) McClain of Bath Co., KY and Harry Boone of Georgetown, KY.  She is also survived by her sisters, Opal Reed and Linda Purcell, both of Augusta, KY; several grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, James Lee Boone and Beverly Fortin; and her siblings, Margie Saunders and George Purcell.
Funeral service will be at 2:00pm on Wednesday May 15, 2024 at Moore and Parker Funeral Home in Augusta, KY.  Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery.  Visitation will be 12:00pm-2:00pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Cummins Cox and their daughters Jo Ann (Darrin) Young and Kathy (Brian) Lippert, both of Augusta, KY; his grandchildren, Joseph (Mackenzie) Tucker, Le Ann (Eddie) Tucker, Joshua Young; grandchildren in heart, Karson (David) Lippert, Khloe Lippert and Kenna Lippert; and several special great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings, Goldie Moran, Pat (Ronnie) Buerkley, Joyce (Teddy) Colvin, James (Martha) Cox, and his twin sister, Bonnie (S.C.)Shepherd; several nieces and nephews; and his special dog, Bobo.

David was a lifelong farmer and heavy equipment operator until his health forced his retirement.
He is survived by his children, David Brent Tucker and Amanda (Zack) Hargett, and his granddaughters, Paige Hargett and Sloan Tucker. He is also survived by his best friend and partner, Anne Tabb Zummo. Also surviving David are several aunts and uncles, alongside whom he was raised: Marilyn Smith and Retha Prospisil of Middletown, OH, Lynn Thomas, Benny Thomas, Barry Thomas and Phyllis Holleran, all of Bracken County.
Along with his mother, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Darrell Tucker and Larry Reeves; his Uncle Kenny Thomas and Aunt June Lippert, and maternal grandparents Stanley and Doris Thomas.

Dale Allen Dummitt - February 16, 1943 - July 06, 2023

Obituary Preview: Brooksville-Dale Allen Dummitt , 80 years old, of 2307 Glen Drive in Maysville, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2013 ,at the Maysville Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center after losing his battle with liver failure.
Dale was born February 16, 1943, at Camp Dix, Kentucky, in Lewis County, the youngest of six children, to Ora(Cooper) and William Dummitt. He graduated from Laurel High School as the class valedictorian. Upon graduating from Morehead State University with a B.S. degree in 1966, he taught math and science at Lewis Co. High School from 1966-1969. After receiving a National Fellowship Grant to pursue a Master’s degree at Cornell University, the family moved to Horseheads, New York, in August,1969 ,where he completed his Master’s degree at Cornell and was then employed by Horseheads Central School District as a math and science teacher from 1970-1998. After retiring from teaching, Dale and his wife Colleen returned to Kentucky where she currently resides.
Dale enjoyed golf with his friends in Horseheads and later with friends at Laurel Oak Golf Club where he and his wife were members for several years. After returning to Kentucky, Dale enjoyed twenty years of gardening and sharing produce with many of his Washington Glen neighbors. His greatest love was spending time with his wife, his daughter and her family,and his son and his family.
Hie is survived by his wife Colleen(McClanahan) Dummitt with whom he celebrated sixty years of marriage on June 1, 2023. Family survivors include his daughter Cindy (John) Scott and granddaughter Sasi Scott of Middletown,Ohio,and his son Sean (Anna Laura Bennett) and granddaughters Claudia June Bennett-Dummitt and Lucy Ann Bennett-Dummitt of Odenton, Maryland. He is also survived by his sister Erma Hamilton of Greensburg, Indiana, his sisters-in-law, Sharon Teegarden of Brooksville, Kentucky, and Kim McClanahan of Waynesboro, Virginia, as well as a brother-in-law, Louis Kalin of Waynesboro, Virginia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews of the Dummitt family as well as nieces and nephews from the McClanahan family, and a former bother-in-law, Jay White, of Sandpoint, Idaho.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Edsel Dummitt and two sisters, Mabel Bloomfield and Hildreth Stone as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Adrian and Eileen McClanahan. Finally, he is predeceased by his brother-in law,Richard Teegarden of Brooksville, Kentucky, and a sister-in-law, Michele McClanahan White, of Augusta, Kentucky.
Dale was a fan of several local sports team including the UK basketball and football teams, the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds. He enjoyed watching the games with his wife and other family members.
He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Horseheads,New York, a member of NYSUT(New York State Teachers Union) ,and a former member of the Elks Club in Horseheads,New York. He was also a baptized member of the former Wellsburg Christian Church which he helped to build in the early 1960’s along with his father-in-law Adrian McClanahan and his brother-in-law Richard Teegarden.
Services will be held at Moore and Parker Funeral Home in Brooksville, Kentucky,located at 41 Hackett Ridge Road. Visitation will be held on July 21 from 5-8 PM followed by funeral services at 11 AM on July 22. Burial at Johnsville Cemetery will follow after the funeral services are concluded. Family and friends are invited to a celebratory meal at New Hope Christian Church, 6048 Parry Lane off US 68. Those not wishing to attend the burial service should plan to arrive at the church between 2:30 and 3 PM.

Sofiah Sexton - September 22, 1944 - April 20, 2023

Obituary Preview: Augusta-Sandra Sofiah Sexton, age 78, died on April 20, 2023, after a long battle with cancer, in the presence of her sons at the Ruth Wood Open Arms hospice in Visalia, California. Sofiah was born on September 22, 1944 to Louise (neé Coleman) and Walter Olan Sexton in Covington, Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. She grew up in Northern Kentucky with her brother, Larry Olan Sexton, and moved with the family to Florida in 1960, where she graduated from West Palm Beach High in 1962. After returning to Northern Kentucky and holding a series of odd jobs, Sofiah married Rasjid Pullom of Highland Park, Michigan, and gave birth to their two sons in 1972 and 1973, respectively. The couple divorced shortly thereafter and Sofiah returned to the Greater Cincinnati area, where she put herself through the University of Cincinnati to earn a degree in education. After graduating, Sofiah became the county library of Bracken County, Kentucky, before becoming the school librarian for Piner Elementary, where she retired in 2006. In retirement, Sofiah cared for her mother until she passed away, and then moved to Exter, California, to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Sjahari Stephen and Roekmini Pullom of Visalia, California, and Djamal Joseph and Candice Pullom of Seattle, Washington. Sofiah is also survived by seven grandchildren, Stephen (23), Morgan (23), Alejandro (21), Matthew (20), Rahim (18), Matiana (13), and Rafael (8), as well as her dogs, Mellow and Sparkles. Sofiah’s kindness, wit, and wisdom will be missed by family and friends alike. A memorial was held on May 20 at the Visalia Friends Meeting House (Quaker Church), where she was a member.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three daughters, Mary Kay Saunders, Sharon Nickerson, and Betty Hafer; two grandchildren, Michelle Woods and Blake Sauer; two sons-in-law, Leroy Curtis and Larry Hafer; one brother, Demeree Saunders, four sisters, Divey Crawford, Lena Route, Evelyn Howard, and Polly Gallagher. Born July 12, 1937, in Mocksville, North Carolina, Jackie was the daughter of the late Magdaline Potts and John Karr McCulloh.
Jackie grew up in Davie Co. and was a graduate of Shady Grove High School. She received a B.A. in education from High Point University and later a Masters of Education from Morehead State University.
A committed school teacher at Mason Co. and Augusta Independent Schools for over 40 years, she taught students in grades K through 12. Jackie was devoted in her faith and had great love for her family. She instilled strong values while creating special times all year long for her family and friends. She was a member of the Augusta United Trinity Methodist Church for many years and shared her faith by teaching Sunday school as well.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, Bracken County Historical Society, Augusta Independent Educational Foundation, founding member of the Historical Heritage Women’s Club, Bracken County Retired Teachers, Kentucky Retired Teachers, and Red Hats Society of Augusta. She also was named Kentucky Colonel by two different governors.
Jackie is survived by her son, Gregory Arthur Taylor (Colleen) of Augusta, KY and daughter, Sonya Leigh Davis (Todd) of Glasgow, KY. Memaw/Momo will be dearly missed by her granddaughters, Allyson Paige Durham (Josh) La Grange, KY and Taylor Elisabeth Davis of Louisville, KY, great-granddaughters Georgia Grace and Laynie Durham of La Grange, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, June McCulloh.
