Mary Elizabeth "Liba" Barrett Batson - June 24, 1928 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Wiggins)
Obituary Preview: Mary Elizabeth "Liba" Barrett Batson, 95, passed through the gates of heaven and to eternal life in Christ on April 26, 2024. Liba has reunited with her beloved husband Hubert Dale Batson, her dear mother Mary Belle (Miller) Barrett, father Frank W. Barrett and brother Frank W. Barrett, Jr., cherished relatives and friends who have gone before.
She is mourned and honored by her daughters Dale Batson Prentiss (William W. Prentiss) and Ann Barrett Batson, son Mark Barrett Batson (Gloria Maples Batson, d. 2024) and half sister Drenda Barrett; grandchildren Brian Prentiss, Payton Prentiss, Garrett Batson and Raysha H. Crosland; and seven great-grandchildren.
Liba, born in Hollandale, Mississippi on June 24, 1928, was an honors graduate of Mississippi State College for Women in 1950, where she majored in Accounting.
While attending Mississippi State University summer school in 1949 to advance her early graduation date, Liba met the love of her life, Hubert (“Hu”) Batson, who was soon to receive his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Hu, Liba always said, was her knight in shining armor. They were wed on March 4, 1950 and began married life in Hu’s hometown of Wiggins, Mississippi.
Their first home was built by Hu for his bride before they wed and while she finished her degree. Hu’s parents, Braxton C. Batson and Sallie (Hartness) Batson lived nearby. Sallie was a caring and supportive mother-in-law, sharing a love for gardening that Liba beautifully carried on throughout her long life.
A loving, devoted wife and mother, Liba applied her many talents, skills and creativity to manage a tip-top household and set many a shining example of using God’s gifts to the fullest for her family and others. Her daughters fondly recall her as an accomplished seamstress who created exquisite mother-daughter holiday outfits, Barbie doll wardrobes, home furnishings, and even a complete wedding trousseau. Lib was equally admired for her lovely displays of seasonal home decor, which brought her much joy.
Sharp of mind and memory, Liba could delight others even through her later years by perfectly reciting a classic poem learned in high school or college, or sharing an apropos quote in Latin. Lib naturally encouraged her children to follow in her footsteps by excelling in their school and Bible studies, and developing their God-given talents.
Liba was caring and empathetic to all who crossed her many paths. A loyal and thoughtful spouse, mother, grandmother (“Batsie”) and friend, she offered encouragement and support along with a sympathetic ear and wise counsel. She dove into volunteer work wherever Hu’s employment took them, particularly in the Southern Baptist churches in which they were active. In Mobile, AL, she relished her shifts at the local charity hospital, even assisting the ER doctors.
To so many who knew and loved Liba, she will be most profoundly remembered for her deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. Liba loved the Lord and in His service shared the Word as a Sunday School and study group teacher, Bible scholar and spiritual mentor to many.
Liba was known for her lengthy prayer lists and steadfast hours of prayer for family, friends and people to the ends of the earth. When she said "I will pray for you," she did. It was always a great comfort to those who knew she was interceding for them.
On May 4 at 10:30 a.m., joyous prayers of thanksgiving for Liba will be lifted by family and friends as we usher her into the arms of her Savior at a graveside service at the Reverend Thomas Price Memorial Cemetery near Wiggins, MS. Minister David Perry of First Baptist Church of Wiggins and grandson Brian Prentiss will co-officiate. In keeping with her wishes, donations of Gideon Bibles can be made in loving memory of Elizabeth B. Batson through The Gideons International at https://www.sendtheword.org/

Betty L. Daughdrill - February 06, 1937 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Wiggins)
Obituary Preview: Betty Lee Broadus Daughdrill, 87, of Biloxi, MS passed away on March 18, 2024. She was born on February 6, 1937, to Sidney and Hattie Krohn Broadus, in Atlanta, Texas. She was a Christian and worshiped at Cedar Lake Global Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church of Carnes. Betty was described by many as one of the sweetest people they had ever met.
She married James “Popeye” Daughdrill in April 1955 and lived in the Woolmarket Community, where they raised their two daughters Rhonda and JoAnne. In their retirement years, they resided in Carnes, MS, and Betty returned to Woolmarket after the passing of her husband.
Throughout her life, she quietly harbored many talents. She spent many hours behind a sewing machine making clothes for her family, one of the most special items being her daughter’s wedding gown. Later in life she started quilting and could not be stopped, her kitchen table often covered in the material from the project she was creating for her family. There was nothing like the smile she wore when she talked about the quilts that won ribbons in the County Fair. Crocheting was another talent she had, creating many pieces including doilies, blankets, dolls, and even hats for the homeless. Lastly, she painted ceramics- so many that she had her own kiln. Many of her pieces are on display in her family’s homes.
Betty loved to be outdoors in her garden. She had daylilies in every color imaginable and was always adding to her flower garden. When she wasn’t in her flower garden, she was in her vegetable garden growing turnips, tomatoes, corn, beans, and anything else she could preserve. No one would ever go hungry with her surplus of canned vegetables. She even worked at The Pickle Factory in Wiggins.
Her talents and hobbies were passed down through multiple generations. She taught her daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters how to sew. Many summers were spent painting with her granddaughter. And now her great-granddaughter cans and preserves the vegetables she grows in her own garden.
Betty loved most being Memaw. She would get so excited when school was out so she could stay with her grandchildren, most days showing up at the door with donuts in hand. She never turned down an opportunity to be with her grandchildren.
Betty is joining her husband Popeye and daughter JoAnne in Heaven. She is also preceded by her parents and a sister, Ann Scarborough.
Remaining on this Earth to cherish her memory are her daughter, Rhonda (George) Charles, of the Big Level Community, Perkinston, MS, granddaughter Tina (Christopher) Corey, of Katy, Texas, grandson Greg (Angela) Charles, of the Woolmarket Community, great-grandchildren Alexys, (Alex and Oliver Carr), Cayleb, Madison, Hunter, Hayden, and Taylor, brother Bill Broadus, of Biloxi, sister Elaine Smith, of Gulfport, and numerous nieces and nephews. “Daughter, your faith has healed you”, Jesus said, “Go in peace.” Luke 8:48
