Sidney Keith Krhut - February 21, 1949 - April 30, 2024

Departed: 04/30/2024 (Hattiesburg)
Obituary Preview: Sidney Keith Krhut, 75, of Hattiesburg, passed away in the early morning of Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Alden Pointe Assisted Living & Memory Care surrounded by and holding hands with his family. Visitation will be Saturday, May 4, 2024 from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at Heritage Church with a memorial service immediately following at 11a.m. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort. Sid was born on February 21st of 1949 in Mobile, Alabama, the son of Eunice Harbison and Rudolph “Rudy” J. Krhut. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Lorinda Smith Krhut formerly of Fairhope AL; their son, Samuel Knowlton Krhut, and his wife, Margaret, of Nashville, Tennessee; his daughter, Sydney Krhut Larson and her husband, Christopher, of Brandon, Mississippi; their two children, Case and Collins; his four siblings, Arlene Krhut Harman of Birmingham, Alabama, Warren Krhut, of Fairhope, Alabama, Fred Krhut and his wife, Karen Davies, of Fairhope, Alabama, and Donna Krhut Anderson, and her husband, Pat, of Fairhope, Alabama; and many special nieces and nephews.
While living in Fairhope, Sid graduated from Fairhope High School in 1967 and worked on the family farm alongside his father and siblings. In 1969, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Rucker, Alabama, until 1971. After honorable discharge, he returned to complete his Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of South Alabama with an emphasis in ceramics. This is where he began his lifelong love and appreciation of photography and ceramics. Following graduation, he obtained his Class 1 welding certification and began working at Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company. After a number of years, he returned to work at the family farm in Fairhope until 1988 when he moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi where he began to work at the University of Southern Mississippi. His experience in agriculture resulted in his eventual appointment as the Director of Landscape and Grounds at the university. One of his points of pride was the care and special attention to the rose gardens on campus that are still enjoyed to this day by the community. He was a dedicated member of the university community until his retirement in 2011.
Sid was a faithful member of Heritage Church, where he served as Trustee. He always found ways to serve God in His house by using his gifts and talents to build and repair. One of his favorite activities throughout his years at Heritage was driving the church van to pick up senior members who no longer had transportation, along with his faithful assistants, Sam and Sydney. He will be greatly missed as a member of the Heritage community but we know that his presence will still be felt as his chalices will continue to be used for communion.
In his retirement, he returned to his love of creating art. He spent most of his time in his pottery studio. He turned his passion into philanthropy by donating his art to the Edwards Street Fellowship Empty Bowls fundraiser. He consistently gifted his art to members of the community, including Southern Pines Animal Shelter and the USM Wesley Foundation. He used his art to turn hardship into beauty. He would collect downed trees from hurricanes and turn them into beautiful bowls and lamps. He found great satisfaction in knowing that people enjoyed his art in the Hattiesburg area, and beyond.
Sid was beloved by all. He was known for his humility, kindness, and quiet nature, as well as his love and dedication to his family and community. His greatest gift to them was his constant love and presence. Sid was a devoted husband of 50 years, celebrating his wedding anniversary only 10 days prior to his passing. In spite of the obstacles that came with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) over the last few years, Sid and Lorinda only deepened their love and devotion to one another through the challenges. Their marriage was a testament to their commitment to the vows they took at their wedding in 1974, as their unwavering faithfulness to each other carried them through the times of sickness and health. As a father, Sid cared deeply for his children. He was a scout leader and never missed a game or concert and his kids could always count on seeing him in the stands or audience. Yet his pride in his children was not derived from their academic or athletic accolades, but rather their character and integrity, and how they treated others. When he became a grandfather, his family saw a new side to Sid. He was quick to get on the floor to play with his grandchildren and build trophy cases to display their achievements. The serious and hardworking farmer now found himself crafting cardboard houses with Case and having tea parties with Collins.
His family would like to make a special note of appreciation to the medical professionals who we consider family, as they brought much love and light over the past few years. We are forever grateful for the joy and companionship that they brought Sid. Rhonda, Kelly, April, Rod, Caresse, Tyler, Shannon, Olivia, Kennedy, and Lexi, we love you and are so thankful for the role you played in Sid’s life.
We also would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Craig Dollar and Larry Faggert for their continued care and companionship in visiting with Sid over the last year and a half.

Edith Easterling James - November 28, 1918 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Hattiesburg)
Obituary Preview: Mary Edith Easterling James, thought to be the oldest living WWII veteran in Mississippi, died April 22,2024 at the age of 105. During her 10 1/2 decades of life, she saw more changes to our world than can be imagined. She was born November 28, 1918 only two weeks after the end of WWI AND the year before women received the right to vote. Edith life spanned the explosion of many societal changes from horse and buggy to space travel. She experienced advances in communication and knowledge from hand cranked telephones to the invention of television, computers, cell phones and the internet.
She was born in rural Perry County on a farm. Her first trip to Hattiesburg was in a farm wagon pulled by a mule. Oldest of seven children, she grew up helping with farm chores and the rearing of her siblings. Her mother taught her to read at the age of four enabling her to begin school early at a three-room school house. Thus began her lifelong thirst for learning.
First of her family to attend college, she entered what is now University of Southern Mississippi on a work scholarship. To pay for her tuition, Edith worked in the library, served tables in the dining hall, and cleaned the buildings. Her father supplied farm products to a large family who lived in walking distance of the college to provide for her room and board. As a student, she participated in the Bertha Fritzsche Home Economics class forming a dance team for the football games which is believed to be the forerunner to the Dixie Darlings.
During those days, a person was allowed to begin teaching after two year of college which brought about her teaching of all her brothers and sisters. After completing her college degree, she joined the United States Navy as World War II had begun. She served for three years in New York, Chicago, and Newport, RI.
At the end of the war, she returned home and married another local veteran, Marcus James. Edith and he raised three daughters in the Petal area with her teaching high school English and later sixth grade reading in the Perry County and Petal school districts.
After her husband’s death and her retirement from teaching, she traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. Her travels culminated with a trip to China at age 89 with her daughters. Edith was active in forming the OLLI chapter at USM as a charter member. She was recognized for her many years of volunteer service at both Forrest General Hospital and Merit Health Wesley. Edith was also an active member of the Silver Belles Aerobics Class at Wesley from her mid 60’s until she was 98. An avid reader of anything based on a historical background as well as many current publications, her wealth of knowledge grew until the end. Her last seven years have been spent at Brookdale Senior Living facility where she formed many new friendships with the other residents and staff.
Edith took great pride in her family. She also treasured passing on the love of reading and learning to generations of students whose lives she touched in 35 years of teaching.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband Marcus James and her parents Ira and Mary Stevens Easterling and four siblings.
She is survived by her daughters Lou Ann Morris of Oak Grove, Mississippi, Linda (Terry)James Dulaney of Clarksdale, Mississippi, and Jenny James of Asheville, North Carolina. Edith had four grandchildren-Marcus James Dulaney, Meredith Dulaney Langston, Kevin Morris, and Anna Claire Gleason and five great-grandchildren. Other family members are sister Geraldine Hinton and brother Bennet Easterling and many nieces and nephews. The family especially thanks nephew Gary Rhodes who made it possible for her to live independently for many years.
