Patricia Winterson - May 07, 2024 - May 07, 2024

Departed: 05/07/2024 (San Anselmo)
Obituary Preview: Patricia Winterson 1936-2024
Patricia Marilyn Winterson, age 87, of Marin County, California, passed away on April 27, 2024. Pat was born on June 11, 1936, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to Harold and Sophie Winterson (née Rapoza). Pat knew heartache at a very early age when her mother died of tuberculosis. The events that followed shaped her into a fiercely independent and courageous young woman. She grew close to her Massachusetts relatives, graduated from New Bedford High School in 1954, and shortly thereafter moved to California seeking new experiences and adventure. She landed in San Francisco, and eventually moved to her home in Mill Valley where she lived most of her life.
Pat had an impressive and rewarding career at United Airlines that began as a flight attendant in 1958 in San Francisco. She worked for United for 43 years, and in 1973 was the highest ranking woman at the company (managing more than 1,300 people). Pat helped challenge gender-based discrimination and promote equality in the workplace. In 1976 she delivered a speech about women in management, the first time in the history of United that the subject had been addressed publicly. She was incredibly driven, pushing the boundaries at work, and also pushing herself intellectually, reading entire collections of classic authors, and seeking mentors and friends who expanded her horizons and perspectives. She earned a degree from University of San Francisco in 1979.
A curious adventurer, Pat’s life was full of travel and exploration. She loved bargain shopping in Hong Kong, exploring museums and architecture in Paris, and passing the time in restaurants and bookstores in Florence. She was a beloved daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, friend and employee. She was a lover of novels and biographies, a generous supporter of animals, and an old movie buff. And she loved her dear Gracie, Sophie and Phoenix.
Pat is survived by many dear famly and friends, and is predeceased by her partner of 20 years and best friend, Frank Murphy, and her three beloved brothers. She has spent her life exploring with people she loved, and now she’s on to her next voyage, with lots of love waiting for her on the other side. To honor Pat’s deep love of animals, please consider a donation to one of her favorite organizations, Marin Humane Society.

Wilbert "Jerry" Thompson - Unknown - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (San Anselmo)
Obituary Preview: Wilbert Gerard “Jerry” Thompson passed away on April 6, 2024, at his home in San Rafael at the age of 93.
Jerry was born on November 11, 1930, in San Francisco to Walter and Loretto Thompson. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Jerry is survived by his children, Tim Thompson (Molly Sims partner), Sally Merz (John), Beth Sasan (Tim), Dennis Thompson (Nancy), Paul Thompson (Kathleen), Peter Thompson (Toni) and daughter in-law Debi Thompson (Steve deceased). Jerry was the beloved grandfather of Jerry, Jen, Luke, Conor, Maggie, Stephanie, Jake, Petra, Ray, Maile, Matthew, Erin, Annie, Jack, Amanda, Allison, Charlotte, Shannon, Ellen, Wil, Emily, Addy, Kyle, Kenny, and Greta, and 33 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Bob Thompson and Jim Thompson, and sisters Nancy Giorgi and Mary Gaidano.
Jerry was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Erin O'Donoghue Thompson, daughter Stephanie Thompson, son Steve Thompson, parents Walter and Loretto Thompson, brother Walter Thompson Jr., and sister Sr. Sally Thompson of the Sisters of the Holy Names.
Jerry’s family moved to San Anselmo in 1933 before the Golden Gate Bridge was built. Jerry went to St. Anselm Elementary School and St. Anselm High School, class of 1948, where he forged lifelong friendships.
Jerry’s mother told him at a young age he should date cute Erin O’Donoghue. Their first date was at a dance at The Pavilion in Fairfax where their love blossomed. They married in 1950 after the initial protest of Erin’s father, who thought the marriage would never last. 65 years later they celebrated their anniversary in Yountville, surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
After attending College of Marin, Jerry went to work full time in the family business, joining his father and brothers at WG Thompson Painting. Jerry worked his way from the ground up, starting as an apprentice, and quickly advancing to journeyman, foreman, and general superintendent. As owner of one of the Bay Areas largest painting contracting businesses, Jerry was in charge of over 200 painters at times and supervised work on notable Bay Area landmarks such as SF City Hall, SF Opera House, UCSF, and the Transamerica Pyramid, as well as many prominent hotels, universities, office buildings and hospitals. In 1994 Jerry left WG Thompson and started Jerry Thompson & Sons Painting with two of his sons, continuing the family painting business legacy which began in the late 1800’s. All who knew Jerry in the construction industry respected and admired his
hard work ethic and integrity. He sat on many industry boards and committees throughout his career, serving as President of the local Painting & Decorating Contractors Association and negotiating many Painters Union agreements. Jerry worked extremely hard until he retired in 2011 at the age of 80.
After raising their 8 children, which included the oldest, Stephanie, who was developmentally disabled, Jerry and Erin explored the world together. Jerry especially loved traveling to see the big animals of Africa. In his later years he shared his joy of travel with his children and grandchildren.
Jerry loved participating in sports. He competed in boxing and played basketball and football in high school. He was an avid tennis player and took part in “serious” tennis matches with his dearest old friends Stan Payton, Ben Guglielmo, and Jack Fahy. He learned to ski with his children and brought them to the slopes for years. Jerry could be found coaching his children at the San Anselmo little league field, attending football games at Marin Catholic and watching and cheering on his grandchildren in later years. In recent years he was a fixture on the San Rafael bocce courts and could be counted on to make the game point.
Above all, Jerry will be remembered for his infectious laughter, warm smile, and unwavering kindness. He had a remarkable ability to light up any room and leave a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jerry kept his sense of humor and positive attitude all the way to the end of his life. His wonderful caregivers, Rai Marisilino and Betty Toka can attest to his continued joking, teasing and laughing, even while enduring a failing body.

Leslie Allen Mize - October 12, 1945 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (San Anselmo)
Obituary Preview: Marinwood resident for more than half a century, Les Mize passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 78 on April 4, 2024, after a long battle with multiple health challenges. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather and deeply committed to his family and his community, Les leaves a legacy of service and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Born in San Francisco on October 12, 1945, to Marie and Robert Mize, Les grew up in Mill Valley as one of eight children. An active youth and a 1963 graduate of Tamalpais High School, Les was keen to be an involved citizen. As a teen, he sought out volunteer opportunities. In addition to being the youngest member to join the Mill Valley Lions Club, at the age of 18, he was active with the Mill Valley Junior Chamber of Commerce. These formative experiences instilled in him a sense of commitment to service and community and solidified for him the merits of hard work and earning the respect of others—values that would shape his life's journey.
A self-proclaimed flag-waver and patriotic to his core, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves. From 1965 to 1971 his service (which included army cook) and basic training took him to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, as well as summers at Fort Ord and Camp Roberts. Les remained a card-carrying member of the local branch of the American Legion.
It was during these years that Les met the love of his life, Patty Vaio, at John Finn Accounting in Mill Valley, where they both worked at the time. Their first official date was a New Year’s Eve event ushering in the year 1969, and the happy couple married that summer, forging an incredible partnership in love and life.
In 1970, Les and Patty moved to Marinwood, and by 1972 began a family—welcoming six children within ten years. Both being dog lovers they welcomed several dogs to their home over the years—including many yellow labs! They became active in their parish of St. Isabella, where many of the children attended grade school. Les and Patty immersed themselves in the lives and activities of their children. From little league and soccer coach to Irish dance and musical theater dad; from parish and school leadership to years as a Boy Scout Troop 71 Committee Chair, Les was invested in the lives of his children.
A gifted salesman, Les found success in the commercial print industry. Initially with George Lithograph Company, Les teamed up with the Fong family in 1976—a partnership that marked the beginning of Fong Brothers Printing, Inc.—a company that went on to become the third largest commercial printer in Northern California. After more than forty years as the company’s Vice President, Les retired in 2016 but remained involved with a handful of clients to the present day. Les and the whole Mize family truly cherished the nearly half-century partnership with the entire Fong family and have nothing but gratitude for the friendship and opportunities afforded.
Perhaps a unique hallmark of his success in sales was his passion for Mickey Mouse. Clients nicknamed him Mickey Mouse and loved seeing what tie or wristwatch he was wearing, or what aloha-style Disney shirt he might have on—that inevitably came with a story or trivia session. Even his office was decked out with Disney memorabilia and came to be a coveted stopping point on any plant tour.
Growing up admiring the Mickey Mouse Club and a fan of the wholesome family values on which Walt Disney based the creation of his theme park, Les was excited to make his first trip to Disneyland in 1973. He immediately fell in love with the entire concept—the beautiful landscaped gardens and pathways, a place to play and have fun as a family, wonderful music and entertainment, the cleanliness—he felt at home on Main Street U.S.A. and would spend the rest of his life sharing, visiting, collecting, endeavoring to re-create and emulate, investing in, and learning more about all things Disney.
Les loved taking his family to Disneyland, and later he and Patty expanded their park visits to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The two attended multiple Disneyana Conventions and events and enjoyed opportunities to meet artists, authors, Imagineers, and entertainers—and there were plenty of opportunities to add to his growing collection with limited edition and signed collectibles. He took countless Disney courses, earning not only his Mouseters Certificate but his Ducktorate Certificate as well.
His love of Disney was perhaps only rivaled by his love of Christmas. Over four decades and with the help of an ever-expanding family that came to include sons- and daughters-in-law and grandchildren, Les and his family, affectionately known as Team Mize, built up a seasonal spectacle that became a holiday destination for generations of visitors. The Mickey Mouse Christmas House offered extensive window displays, various vignettes, and tens of thousands of lights, and the magic of Christmas was shared broadly. The Mize Family and their Christmas creation were featured on ABC’s inaugural season of “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” as well as several local network Christmas specials, and various features in newspapers and magazines.
Les enjoyed supporting local initiatives such as Can Do! and Kelly’s Wishes Foundations through the Mickey Mouse Christmas House. During the farewell season in 2017, Les and his family were delighted to receive a special Resolution from the Marin County Board of Supervisors presented by then-Supervisor (now California State Assemblyman) and fellow Lion Damon Connolly, recognizing the impact the Mickey Mouse Christmas House had on the community. In addition, Les was honored to receive a similar recognition from the Marinwood Community Services District (CSD). Les and his family shared a love of Lake Tahoe and purchased a vacation home in Chamberlands on the West Shore in 1978. Since then, Les was involved with the Chambers Landing Beach and Mountain Club (CBMC) Board and became a Director. He remained active on the Board until very recently, having served as President for some ten years. When the Chamber’s Landing Recreation Association was formed around 1982, Les became one of the first Directors on the Board—holding leadership positions several times over including President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Les remained active on the Board for the rest of his life and was the last remaining original Board member still serving. He was compelled to serve to ensure that the place he and his wife and children grew to know and love would remain and thrive for future generations. At a time when the historic Chambers Landing Bar and Restaurant were put up for sale and risked an uncertain future, it was Les and a couple of other Recreation Association members who took the initiative and invested personally, created the Pier Company, and sold stock shares—a move which ensured the preservation of cherished landmarks. Winter snow weekends and summer boat rides with family were great, but Les loved to sink his feet into the hot summer sand on the beach at Chambers with his newspaper in hand and relax at the end of the day with a Chambers Punch!
Les never did anything small or halfway. Dating back to his teen years, his dedication to Lion’s Club was unparalleled, as indicated by his 59 years of perfect attendance. Having served twice as President in his Mill Valley Lion’s Club, Les chartered the San Rafael Las Gallinas Lion’s Club in March of 1980. He served as Charter President for the club’s first seven years and at other junctures as well. Twice named Lion of the Year in the Mill Valley Club and three times in the Las Gallinas Club, Les earned many distinctions: Lions International Life Member; Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow; Lions Eye Foundation Life Member; Helen Keller Fellow; Canine Companions Life Member; Ear of the Lion Life Member; Multi-District 4 Excellence Award recipient. Les also served three times as Lion Zone Chair and two years as Region Chair.
The pinnacle of his Lion’s Club experience was serving as District Governor for his District 4C-2 in 2017-18. In that year, he made visitations to the 55 clubs in the region, participated in countless events, helped facilitate local Lions relief efforts during the 2017 wildfires in Northern California that devastated many of the communities in his district, energized membership drives, and served as an ambassador for all Lions initiatives. With his local Club, Les was instrumental in creating many annual and long-lived traditions such as the Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Marinwood Park, which just hosted its 45th annual hunt. With his fellow Lions, Les was always on hand to feed the masses with his signature corned beef at the Annual St. Patrick’s Day party, host and judge a youth speech contest, emcee a Halloween costume parade, fill countless shifts of Marin County Fair Parking, volunteer at a community event, recruit new (and re-engage former) members, and much, much more!
He was a lifelong SF Giants and 49ers fan and, an avid reader of the San Francisco Chronicle and the Marin Independent Journal (an IJ carrier as a boy!). He enjoyed his garden, cooking, and a nice Cabernet Sauvignon. He kept up with current events, invited discourse, and was firm and consistent in his opinions. He was a conscientious and faithful voter and encouraged each of his children to register when they turned 18, as was their right and duty.
Known to the next generation of Team Mize as Papa Mic, Les loved watching his grandchildren grow and develop. From his classic Donald Duck voice and trips to Disneyland to sharing his love of Chambers over a summertime ice cream treat or a Shirley Temple, he cherished his time with them.
Les lived life on his terms. As a couple of his favorites, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, crooned, he “did it my way.” Les was a bit of a character, a good judge of character, and a man of character—a man of principles, faith, and family. He was a collector—of things and memories. He had a hard time letting go of anything, a quality that gave him the fight to persist when his body was failing. While his retirement years were marred with health issues, he made the most of the time he had and accomplished much in his 78 years. The Mize family wishes to thank the many doctors, specialists, and healthcare workers, particularly through his many stays at Marin Health Medical Center, who treated Les and helped him eke out as many more memories as his body could manage.
Les Mize is predeceased by his parents Marie and Robert Mize, four brothers, and two sisters; and is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 55 years, Patricia; his six children, Eileen Mize, John (Tricia) Mize, Karen (Jeremiah) Gill, Megan (Sean) Albright, Scott (Danielle) Mize, and Ryan (Hilary) Mize; nine grandchildren—Alyssa, Dylan, Delaney, Quinlan, Patrick, Connor, Peter, Mackenzie, and Cody; his brother Charles (Piedad) Mize; many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews; and countless friends and fellow Lions. Les will be remembered fondly for his kindness, generosity, long-winded stories, sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to his family and his community. He will be forever missed and never forgotten. In the words of his hero, Walt Disney, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” And echoing the words of his pal, Mickey, “Oh, Boy!” Did he ever!
All are welcome to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 1 pm at St. Isabella’s Church (One Trinity Way, San Rafael, CA 94903) with a reception to follow. Gifts in memory of Les Mize may be made to the Las Gallinas Lions Club who support many local and youth programs in Marin County at www.lasgallinaslions.com.

Catherine Ann Cortez - February 13, 1953 - March 12, 2024

Departed: 03/12/2024 (San Anselmo)
Obituary Preview: Catherine Ann Cortez (February 13, 1953 to March 12, 2024)
Catherine Ann Cortez, age 71, of Tiburon, CA, passed away in her home on March 12, 2024. She was known as Cathy to her parents and siblings and as Cortez to her extended family and friends.  Cathy was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Patricia.  She is survived by her Aunt Catherine Barri; siblings Mary Anne Cortez (William Price), Carolyn Cortez Slowikowski (Daniel), and Christopher Robert Cortez (Tamera); 11 nieces and nephews; 19 great nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins from her prolific family.
Cathy was born in Santa Barbara, CA in 1953 to Robert Boniface Cortez and Mary Anne (Kohn) Cortez.  As their first child, she made sure her subsequent siblings knew “rank has its privileges” whenever family benefits and advantages were given.  When rank alone was insufficient, she was quick to call “dibs” with the strategic placement of a licked finger on whatever tasty morsel was contested.  She was a proud Air Force brat as her father served during her childhood.  Due to military transfers, she attended at least five grammar schools and two high schools.  Ultimately, Cathy graduated from O’Fallon H.S., in Illinois while her family was stationed at Scott Air Force Base.
After graduation, Cathy returned to her beloved home state of California.  Her extensive family of aunts, uncles, and cousins quickly welcomed her with open arms.  Aunt Cathy Barri and Uncle Armando Barri were her second parents.  She worked in various jobs, including as a telephone operator in San Francisco, a job fitted for her witty linguistic skills.  However, Cathy’s true love was working with dogs, having a rare communication talent when it came to pups.  The most mischievous dogs would behave like angels under her care.
Being vertically challenged, it was a surprise that she chose to play the accordion, an instrument that was large in comparison to her size.  Maybe there is some truth that coffee and cigarettes stunt your growth?  She was also fond of dark chocolate, Coca Cola, bacon, tacos, and Old Bob’s beef stew.   Two of her favorite past times were reading and arguing.  Speaking of arguing, all knew she would strictly interpret rules and expect others to follow suit especially if she caught you as a “razz on a spazz.”  She admonished non-rule followers by saying, “a card laid is a card played.”  If that logic was not enough, she’d double down with “of all the nerve.”  Bottom line, although diminutive, she, like her two short and stubborn sisters, could be a force of nature if she caught you in her crosshairs.
Fortunately for her community, Cathy made her mark devoting herself and her talents to her passions and causes.  Cortez was brilliantly intelligent and an astoundingly quick study.  She became an advocate for low income housing and served as a board member in housing-related matters.  Although not trained in the legal field, Cathy self-educated and could cite rules, statutes, and regulations to the sub-paragraph.  She was gifted with an excellent memory and a zeal for helping others.
Cathy will be remembered for her unique sayings for life events and actions and for her sense of style. She used her cleverness to name her close friends and family such as “Bear” (cousin Richard Barri), “Maxine” (sister Mary Anne), “Thern” (cousin Catherine Rice), and “Ricster” (Ric West friend and adopted cousin).  Everyone who knew her can close their eyes and hear the jingle and jangle of her many many bracelets and bangles.  Surely, Mary and Bob heard her coming.
Cathy’s family know she guarded her personal affairs and was burdened with personal struggles she carried alone. We are comforted that she is now at peace.  Eternal rest dear sister.

John "Jack" Hirshfeld Jr - July 13, 1928 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (San Anselmo)
Obituary Preview: John Henry Kruse Hirshfeld, Jr., known affectionately as Jack or Jackie, passed away at the age of 95 on March 9, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at home in San Rafael. Jack was a lifelong Bay Area resident and a cherished friend to many. Born on July 13, 1928, in San Francisco to the late John Henry Kruse, Sr. and Amelia Dorothy Arietta.
Jack grew up in San Francisco alongside his sister, Valerie Jeanne Hirshfeld Dickinson, and his first cousin, Ella Frances Aiello, who was born in the same house as he,  three months prior. He attended Balboa High School, where he was president of his senior class. Post-graduation, Jack proudly served his country during WWII as a Seaman 1st Class in the US Coast Guard and later enjoyed his years of travel as a U.S. Merchant Marine. Jack’s professional life was marked by his dedication to the San Francisco Fire Department, which he joined in 1954, originally as a temporary Marine Fireman hired to be a stoker on Fireboat 2. He rose through the ranks and retired as Assistant Chief. Jack spent most of his career on Trucks 15 and 5, retiring after 35 years of service in July 1989. During his retirement, he remained close to his SFFD family at regular get-togethers. Before his passing, the Retired Firefighters of Sonoma County honored Jack’s lifelong commitment to the fire department and its community with an award, recognizing his 35 years of service and 34 years of happy retirement. Father John Greene, retired Chaplain of the SFFD and Jack’s friend remarked, “When Jack answered the last alarm, he was one of the most respected members of the San Francisco Fire Department.”
On April 7, 1956, Jack married the love of his life, Bonnie. They built a life rich in love, laughter, and family, which included their twenty-two godchildren and countless friends. Jack found pleasure in the simple joys of life and was an aficionado of the horse races, where he always “broke even.” He could often be found on the golf course, bocce ball courts, or rooting for the Bears at a Cal game as his grandmother did before him. Jack made holidays special. His legendary corned beef and cabbage became a mainstay for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and his Easter egg hunts a treasured part of “Eastah.” Jack loved spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them how to make his famous chocolate milkshakes and lemon meringue pies and how to play soccer in his yard.
Jack will be remembered as a loving godfather, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind his cousin and goddaughter, Joanne Zito-Sterzenbach (Dieter, Carina, and GJ); his godchildren, Kim Davis (grandchildren Andrea and Brendan), Jan Kowleski (Richard Harpham) and Scott Davis; godson, Charlie Ulbrich (Hannah, Elias, and Madison), and his SF Fire Department family.
Services to celebrate Jack’s life will be held in San Francisco on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 1 pm at the Church of the Epiphany, 827 Vienna St. A reception will immediately follow at the Olympic Club Lakeside Clubhouse at 599 Skyline Blvd.  In place of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Shriner’s Hospital are appreciated.

Alan Hamilton Bowker - July 16, 1948 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (San Anselmo)
Obituary Preview: Alan H. Bowker, beloved husband, father and brother, died at home in San Anselmo on March 8, 2024 after a courageous struggle with cancer.     Alan was passionate about travel photography, railroads, ham radio, computers, music, and above all, people.  He especially enjoyed spending time with daughter Kate Delaney and her husband Daniel Beard and their children Henry, Nick and Susannah  (Ann Arbor, MI). He never lost his optimism and joy in life. Born in Washington D.C. in 1948 where he spent his early years, he frequently visited his maternal grandparents in Frostburg, Maryland.  It was in Frostburg that Alan learned to play the trombone with his grandfather, and began a life long love of music.  He was a season subscriber to the San Francisco Symphony for decades and took great pride in his 3 grandchildren all playing music. When he was 10 his family moved to Casper Wyoming.  At 14,  Alan started a part time job as DJ at the local radio station.  He studied broadcasting at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, moving to the Bay Area to pursue a graduate degree in Broadcast Engineering at San Francisco State.  As a production engineer, Alan worked at KCBS on public affairs and entertainment features, which often included celebrities in the music and entertainment world. While he enjoyed working in broadcasting, Alan took a keen interest in early personal computers and went on to work in Information Technology for Northstar Computers, Fantasy Records,  Dolby, The Good Guys, Homestake and KGO TV.  For a time he advised Stanley Kubrick on using personal computers for script preparation. These jobs often required travel around the world, and fed his love of adventure.  He became a gifted travel photographer, focusing on the people he encountered in exotic locations.  Alan met his wife, Louise, on a train in India in 2015 where they were both touring.  They continued their adventures over the years crossing Russia on the TransSiberian Railroad, trips to Asia, New Zealand and Europe until the pandemic clipped their wings.  In spite of his illness, they managed to squeeze in a trip to Kenya and Tanzania, and to Egypt before travel became too difficult. Alan obtained a ham radio license while in high school and it remained a keen interest all his life.  Most recently he earned the AMSAT (American Radio in Space) Grid Master Award, working all 488 grids in the country, a feat shared by only 62 other people.  He was an active member of the Marin Amateur Radio Society and continued to act as mentor to new operators. He will be missed by so many friends, family and former colleagues, and especially by his wife and his cats.  A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date.

Departed: 02/29/2024 (San Anselmo)
Obituary Preview: Julie (Leonardi) Isetta passed away peacefully on February 29th, surrounded by her loving family. Her passing was quick, and she left behind heartbroken family and friends.
Julie was raised in San Rafael by her parents, Raymond and Marie Leonardi with her sister Joyce. Being a part of a big Italian family, she grew up surrounded by her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all who lived within a few blocks of her. Julie attended Saint Raphael School, Marin Catholic High School, and Dominican College, where she earned her teaching credential. She went on to teach Fourth Grade at Loma Verde in Novato. Julie married her husband, Michael Isetta, who came from a large family himself, and they had five children together. As a teacher, Julie was active with her children’s education at St. Rita School in Fairfax, where she later resumed her teaching career. She was well-known for her wit, creativity, and joy that she shared with her students.
Julie’s family was most important to her, and she loved everything about being a wife and mother. She enjoyed taking trips to Tahoe with them and making day excursions to Sonoma or Bodega Bay packed with six-course picnic lunches. She loved trying new restaurants, going to the movies, and having game nights with her kids and their friends.
Julie’s greatest joy came later when her children started to have children of their own, and she was blessed with nine grandchildren whom she adored. Together with Mike, they made frequent drives to Petaluma for their various babysitting duties. She would spend hours planning yearly trips (especially to Disneyland), themed parties, and picking out gifts for the entire family. She especially loved Christmas, and the house was filled with packages ready to be delivered to her kids and grandkids.
Julie’s passing left a giant hole in her family, and she will be missed dearly. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Michael, and their five children, Jessica (Nick) Somoff, Tony (Vanessa) Isetta, Greg (Katie) Isetta, David Isetta, and Maureen (Kaj) Kibak.
