William J. Hines - August 11, 1959 - December 28, 2023

Departed: 12/28/2023 (Dixon)
Obituary Preview: Willy Hines, the executive director of Congregation Bet Haverim in Davis, Calif., a veteran of the Navy SEALs, an advocate for veterans and resident of Dixon, CA died Dec. 28. He was 64.
Hines joined the Navy in 1979. He completed radioman’s school and then was accepted into BUD/S School (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALS) at the Naval Amphibious Base at Coronado Island, California. There, he underwent rigorous and intensive training in and out of the water before qualifying as a SEAL. He was assigned to SEAL Team 2 in 1980 and reached the rank of Radioman 2nd Class.
His SEAL experience took him all over the world, constantly training, working with allied commando units, and performing operations.
He completed his second tour in 1987 and received an honorable discharge. Typical of veterans of special operations, Willy never bragged about the medals he was awarded and for security reasons, did not discuss specific operations.
After his time in the Navy, he joined the Oregon National Guard and worked in photoreconnaissance. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Oregon State University in 1991 before spending the bulk of his career in agricultural field research in Oregon, North Carolina and California.
His work included plant breeding and other field operations for companies operating in Davis, Calif. He was also a research associate with the UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences. In later years, he served as director of operations for the Farmer Veteran Coalition, a non-profit that recruited veterans for careers in agriculture. His current employer cited his “professional expertise” but, more telling, his “calm and kind manner, and willingness to help anyone with anything at any time.”
He lived a life in service of others and centered himself on his family. Especially his children, Olivia and Isabel. He nurtured their interests in art, design, and music. William often referred to his family as “the music of my life”.
William J. Hines was born in New York City in 1959, the son of the late Norman and Shirley Shultz Hines.
The family moved to Minneapolis and eventually, Burlington, Iowa, before settling in Eureka, Ill., in 1972. Hines was a 1977 graduate of Eureka High School.
A friend and classmate remembered him as the first long-haired kid in Eureka, a transfer from the larger town of Burlington, Iowa. He was different and yet he managed to be like Ferris Bueller, getting along with the many cliques typical in high school.
Hines was a talented athlete, and excelled in academics. In 1976 he was awarded an Illinois State Merit Scholarship. After high school, Hines spent a year as a foreign exchange student in Thailand. Later, he attended Illinois Central College.
Hines was a voracious reader of history, biography and novels. He was a drummer who played in his high school marching, concert and jazz bands. Still a teenager, he also played in a Dixieland jazz band featuring several Caterpillar Tractor Co. engineering executives in Peoria, IL.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Edith Dominguez, a Senior Manager at Genentech, and his children, Olivia, 20, and Isabel, 16. Also surviving are his mother, Shirley; sisters Lisa Hines-Berg and Allison; eight nieces and nephews; his brother-in-laws, Peter Berg, Ervey Dominguez; and sister-in-law Guimar DeVaere. He was preceded in death by his father, Norman.
The family will receive condolences on Friday, January 19th from 5-8 PM at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home, 569 N. First Street in Dixon CA. A Vigil of the Deceased and Rosary will be recited at 7PM.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 20th at 10AM, St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1791 Marshall Road in Vacaville CA. Burial
Friday May 17, 2024 at 10AM Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon CA.
Celebration of Life and Reception to follow.

Delbert "Del" Crew - June 27, 1934 - April 12, 2023

Departed: 04/12/2023 (Dixon)
Obituary Preview: It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Delbert (Del) Crew on April 12, 2023 at his home. Del was a hardworking and kind man, beloved by his family and friends.
Del was born on June 27th, 1934 in Live Oak, CA. His family moved to Vacaville when he was a young boy. He was a lifelong resident of Vacaville and graduated from Vacaville High School in 1952. He was drafted into the Army in 1956 and was sent to Germany and then returned home to his wife where they lived and raised their family. He always offered support and guidance to his children as they navigated life’s challenges.
Del spent many years drilling water wells for the community. Del was a dedicated father and loved spending time with his two sons fishing, water skiing, and snow skiing. He was an animal lover and always had one or more pets with him. Del and Marty later settled in rural Dixon where they built a home and moved the drilling business to the property.
After his retirement Del remained active and productive, spending his days tending his orchard and garden and working on projects in his shop. One of his accomplishments was restoring a 1955 Oldsmobile to showroom quality that he used to race when he was young, winning many trophies. A photo of that car was chosen to be on the National Oldsmobile Poster. He had a remarkable talent for fixing anything and had an encyclopedic knowledge of how things worked. Del was always eager to share his skills and knowledge with his sons and others who needed his advice. While he was still working and for many years after he retired people who were planning to buy land in the country would call him and ask his advice on a certain piece of property and since he remembered every well he had drilled he was able to tell them how deep the other wells in the area were and how much water they may expect.
Del was a man of integrity, hard work and kindness. He always put his best into everything he did. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was the center of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife Marlene (Marty) Crew for 66 years, sons Steven (Angela) and David (Eva) Crew, grandchildren Nicholas (Jessica) and Mikayla Crew, great –grandchildren Nicholas, Alena, Jameson, Kailyn and Wren. Del will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him and his kindness, work ethic, and generosity will never be forgotten.
A service for him will be at McCune Garden Chapel on Wednesday April 26th at 1:00 P.M. He will be laid to rest at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery with Military Honors.

Max Downey - January 22, 1938 - April 09, 2023

Departed: 04/09/2023 (Dixon)
Obituary Preview: Max Downey passed away on Easter Sunday, April 9th, 2023. He was 85 years old.
Max was born in North Carolina and raised in the (then) town of Shelby. Bucking the usual path of working at the Lily Mill textile plant after graduating from high school, Max enlisted in the Air Force. During his 20-year Air Force career, he was stationed in Minnesota, Nebraska, Delaware, Alabama, as well as Japan, where he met his wife, Hiroko. While in the service, his wife encouraged him to pursue his education, resulting in Max being one of the few enlisted airmen with a bachelor’s degree and an MBA. He retired from the Air Force at the ripe old age of 38.
Shortly thereafter, Max joined the Air Force Audit Agency. Though a civilian, his new career prompted him to move just as much as he had when he was in the military. After living in Delaware (again), Virginia, Hawaii, and California, he retired again in 1996 in Dixon, California.
As anyone who had met him knows, Max was a people person. He could effortlessly talk to anybody and instantly put them at ease, which had undoubtedly helped him excel at his careers as well as court his wife. Max was also a voracious reader, as evidenced by the crammed bookshelves lining the walls of his home. After his second retirement, Max got into creating fun, personal websites for himself and his online friends. And during the final years of his life, Max enjoyed singing karaoke.
Max leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Hiroko, and his son, David.
