Charlotte Mattingly Tyler - July 14, 1935 - May 04, 2024

Departed: 05/04/2024 (Bardwell)
Obituary Preview: Charlotte Mattingly Tyler, aged 88, gained her heavenly wings on May 4th, 2024. Born on July 14th, 1935 to Mary Askins and John Merlin Mattingly, and raised in Hardinsburg, Kentucky, Charlotte exemplified resilience, compassion, and strength throughout her life. As the oldest of three girls, she took on responsibility at a young age, working in her father’s plumbing store. Eventually she moved to Louisville to attend college and work. After her father passed unexpectedly she took on more responsibility by helping her mother, eventually moving her to Louisville, Ky to be close together.
Charlotte embarked on her journey in education at Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Owensboro during high school. Originally an Arts and Music major, painting and playing piano, cello and violin, she found her passion as a teacher, which allowed her to nurture young minds and empower future leaders. She earned her teaching degree from Spaulding College and said her “greatest accomplishment” was her career as an elementary teacher, spanning over forty years.
Her dedication to her students went beyond the classroom, as she tutored students, arranged and played piano for countless school programs and sponsored Governors Cup team competitions. She approached each day with enthusiasm, fostering a love for learning that extended far beyond textbooks.
Only her devotion to her family and God surpassed her love of teaching. She married her beloved husband, Jim, in 1965 with three children following over the next six years. She made sure her kids had every opportunity to thrive in school, participate in sports, find their faith and follow their dreams. She attended Mass every week and enjoyed attending Baptist Sunday School with her husband. After retirement, she and Jim enjoyed cruising the Caribbean, especially when family would join them. She enjoyed working out at the gym and volunteered at Mayfield Hospital where she loved to peek in on the babies.
Charlotte was the consummate painter and crafter, whether it was painting walls in her house or art on canvas. She often gifted her works to friends and family. She was always up for attending a craft show, an art class or spending the weekend thrifting. When the grandkids were in town, trips to mini golf, the water park and evening game night were a must.
Over the past few years, she suffered with dementia, but her positive spirit was always on display. Ask her how she was feeling, and her response was “I feel great!” and “God is good!” She moved to Georgia last year and would enthusiastically exclaim that she was now “a Georgia Peach”, but always a Kentucky girl at heart.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter Andrea (Bob) Preston of Cumming, Georgia; son Jeff (Nancy) Tyler of Wilmington, North Carolina; a sister Merlene Glenn of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Chad Tyler, Morganne (Michael) Turberville and Evan Preston; two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Miles Turberville; many nieces and nephews and lifelong friends considered family.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, James William Tyler; and one son, James “Jamie” Merlin Tyler; a sister Mary Patricia “Patsy” Cox; and her parents.

Betty Owens - March 21, 1931 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Bardwell)
Obituary Preview: Betty Lee Cope Owens, 93, of Bardwell, Kentucky, left this earth on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
Betty was born on March 21, 1931, to the late Flora Washburn and Walter Washington-Lee Cope.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Owens; a son, Mitchell Owens; grandsons, Ty Black and Aaron Owens; and siblings, Jimmie L. Cope, Shirley Ann Phillips, and Sarah Mae Phelps.
Betty went from being a homemaker and stay-at-home mom to working at Snowers Manufacturing Company before finding her true calling when she went back to school and became a CNA at the Clinton Hospital.  After leaving Clinton Hospital to care for family members, she worked as a private nursing assistant. A highlight of Betty’s life was the time she spent in Alaska.  She loved traveling through so many states finding God’s beauty in each one.  Also, sometimes to the chagrin of her family, she could never say “no” to a stray cat or dog.  She delighted in feeding the birds, watering the plants, and telling her loved ones to “trust in Jesus and live a happy life.”
But her family was her pride and joy.  Children and grandchildren called often to find out how to _______.  Just fill in the blank because she was always called upon to tell the family how “to do it.”  As recently as April, she was giving instructions on when and how to “cut back” her Kentucky rose bush and was often called upon to explain how to bake her family's favorite recipes.
Betty was a member of the Church of Christ for the majority of her life and, most recently, was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Paducah.
Betty is survived by her son, Jimmy (Charlotte) Owens; her two daughters, Ginger Goode, and Sherry (Ronnie) Faircloth; daughter-in-law, Janie Owens; grandchildren, Roy Black, Ginnifer Barber, Dustin Goode, Brandi Cannon, Bobby Owens, and Brad Copeland; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Bardwell, with Jim Faughn officiating.  Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Bardwell.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until the service time of 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the funeral home.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member, close friend, or funeral home staff member. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, interests, achievements, and other personal details that showcase their personality and life story.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required).

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to reflect on their life and leave a lasting message for loved ones. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or online memorials. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication can range from same-day to several days or even weeks, depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published. However, some online platforms may allow corrections or updates within a certain timeframe.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or restricted viewing option on some online platforms or request that the funeral home only share it with immediate family and friends.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include details about preferred charities or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and records.

Can I reuse an existing obituary for another purpose?

You can create a permanent online memorial through various websites that specialize in digital memorials. These platforms often offer features like guest books, photo galleries, and virtual candles.
