Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary, especially if they are handling the funeral arrangements.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, surviving family members, and a brief biography. You may also want to include information about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable contributions they made during their lifetime.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact them directly for specific guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often without additional biographical information. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detail about the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there's sensitive or difficult information about the deceased that you're unsure how to handle, consider consulting with family members or a trusted friend. It's essential to be respectful and honest while still being mindful of potential sensitivities.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause that was important to them.

How long after someone passes away should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. Typically, it's best to publish within a few days of the person's passing, but this can depend on factors like funeral arrangements and notification of distant relatives.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, many people choose to publish an obituary online only, either through social media platforms, online memorial sites, or funeral home websites. This can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option.

How do I find old obituaries from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of old newspapers that you can access.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy at a funeral?

A well-written obituary can serve as a starting point for a eulogy, but it's generally recommended to expand upon it and add more personal anecdotes and stories.

What's the role of an obituary in the grieving process?
