Her life was filled with may adventures because her husband, Dewey Burton, worked various construction jobs in various states as a licensed pipe fitter. Mrs. Burton followed her husband during his travels making a HOME for the family wherever work took them. It may have not been a luxurious house but it was most definitely a HOME. After moving to Fort Gibson in 1960, they had room for a LARGE garden, putting in several long hours working this garden growing everything except weeds. They always produced more than they could eat and would call their friends to come and help them reap the fruits of their labors. Mrs. Burton also crocheted many items including dollies, Christmas ornaments, table clothes, and afghans and shared them with her family and friends.
Mrs. Burton volunteered at the Muskogee Regional Hospital driving the shuttle cart to carry people to the front door from the parking lot and back.
Mrs. Burton loved her Fort Gibson Church of Christ family and volunteered often for numerous activities from VBS to folding weekly bulletins and meal preparations.
Mrs. Burton was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Burton; parents, BB and Roberta Turner; sisters, Edith Boland and Irene Watkins. She is survived by her daughter and husband, Nancy and Howard Avery of Muskogee; sister, Burney Wilson of Tyler, TX; grandchildren, Mike Avery of Muskogee and Becky Avery of Muskogee; great-grandchildren, Blake Avery and wife, Erika, of Fort Gibson, Biancca and Briaynna Wright, Randy Mills and Brinlee Avery all of Muskogee; great-great-grandchildren, Kylar and Koltyn Scott and Jordyn Avery; many other “family members” who thought of her as “granny” or “Aunt Mary”.
Funeral services for Mrs. Burton will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at the Fort Gibson Church of Christ with Budd Tibbles and Budo Perry officiating.
