Kitty Claire Meares - December 06, 1927 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Ft. Gibson)
Obituary Preview: Kitty Claire Harman Meares was born in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, December 6, 1927, and departed this life for her heavenly home on April 18, 2024, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by parents, Leo D. Harman, Sr., and Hattie Bowlin Harman, brothers Raymond Eubanks and Leo D. Harman, Jr., and sister, Eugenia Harman Winters.
She is survived by her older brother, Joshua James (Jim) Harman, Fort Gibson; daughters Susan Howard (Rex), Oklahoma City; Rebecca Meares Clovis, Fort Gibson; grandchildren Cody Clovis (Kylah), Broken Arrow; Rachel Howard Johnson (Clay), Chelsea; Christina Springfield (Matthew), Tulsa; great-grandchildren Allison and Donnie Johnson, Chelsea; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Kitty never ran out of stories of her childhood in Fort Gibson. Born at home in the Henry Clay Meigs house across from the present-day fort, she led what she called ‘a wonderful life’ that spanned 96 years.
She told stories of early days on her family’s farm with a remarkable memory for detail –stories of riding her paint horse, Jerry. Stories of swimming in the Grand River. Stories of her big brother, Jim, whom she followed relentlessly, much to his chagrin.
Her father read poetry to his children, farmed nearly everything they ate, ran a gravel barge business on the Arkansas, and taught his offspring to be curious and revere the natural world. Even at age 96, she often said she had the best father in the world.
She lived through the great depression, then witnessed every one of her siblings leave home to serve their country during the second World War.
After the war, Kitty attended Northeastern where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, voted the homecoming court’s Miss Wilson Hall, and attended classes. On occasion.
She later graduated from Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater, and in her mind, the new name, Oklahoma State University, never really caught on.
She did social work, married James Meares, and eventually returned to Fort Gibson. They built their home and raised their girls, side by side with her sister Jeannie’s girls, Little Kitty and Lisa. During these years she was a full-time homemaker, led the church MYF students, and volunteered in the community.
With the girls in school, Kitty served on Superintendent Leo J. Donahue’s committee to resolve the dispute over which school district would receive OG&E and other entities’ ad valorem taxes when Georgetown dependent school district voted to annex to Fort Gibson independent school district. In 1971, the new school facilities in Fort Gibson became reality.
After both girls graduated from OSU, Kitty returned to work where she became a supervisor at DHS. She enjoyed tending her flower beds and lawn, but mostly she loved trail riding, often with her best friends, Leowanna Wasson and Judith Urban. Kitty was active in the Fort Gibson Roundup Club and traveled to Wyoming with two others, hauling back a trailer load of wild mustangs.
Trail riding and horses were always her passion. In 1993 she won the trophy at the Okie-Arkie Cross Country 100-mile trail ride as the oldest female to finish.
When her last grandchild was born, Kitty retired at the age of 70. She had more time to ride horses, attend church activities, grandchildren’s livestock shows, recitals, graduations, and weddings. Kitty taught horsemanship classes and kept horses into her 80’s.
Last week, on a sunny April day, Kitty sat in the backyard of the home she built as a young mother, looking over her valley and the empty green pasture below that had been home to so many beloved horses. She saw her irises in bloom everywhere she looked, and she laughed at her adult grandchildren as they took turns mowing her expansive lawn. It was a wonderful day. She said it was a wonderful life.
Graveside committal at Greenhill Cemetery, Muskogee, Saturday, April 27th 10 a.m. followed by lunch at the First United Methodist Church, Fort Gibson, with Memorial Service in the sanctuary at 1 p.m. Friends and family are invited to all. Honorary pallbearers: Cody Clovis, Clay Johnson, Matthew Springfield, Jim Harman, Rex Howard, and Dan Reese.
If donations are preferred over flowers, the family suggests donations to organizations caring for youth in crisis: Oklahoma Circle of Care, 1501 N.W. 24th St., Suite 214, Oklahoma City, OK 73106 or to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.
